The most solid piece of advice I was ever given as a young writer was this: Read as much as you possibly can. Read twice as much as you write. Don't just read the genres you like or plan to write--read a bit of everything. Read from the best sellers list, read the books that flopped, read classics, read poetry, read playscripts, read non-fiction, read self-help, read everything.
You can read a thousand writing tips on the internet, but I promise you that some of the best lessons on writing are already out there sitting on a bookshelf somewhere. Pay attention to how the masters handled their craft, learn from them, and use that knowledge to help shape your own unique voice.

Jamie Delano Talks Hellblazer, Writing, and Creative Freedom in Comics
From the Early Days of John Constantine to Novels and Creator-Owned Projects
Jaimie Delano is a British comics writer. He was part of the first post-Alan Moore “British Invasion” of writers which started to feature in American comics in the 1980s. Best known as the first writer of the comic book series Hellblazer, featuring John Constantine.
How did you get started in Comics?
Around 1980, I was looking for a way to stop being a taxi driver and realise my long-held ambition to earn a basic living through word-manipulation when a friend suggested comics might be a route to that objective and offered me some introductions to editors in the business.
When you started writing Hellblazer was it hard coming up with plots for a monthly horror series?
Writing – in any format on any title – is always hard, and anyone who says it isn’t is a liar. Blank-page terror, with deadlines looming, is a burdensome condition in which to place oneself. Writing is an awful chore… just one damn word after another until you reach The End. Which of course you never do. At least not while you’re still breathing.
What do you think of the adaptions of Hellblazer?
My old mum always said: If you can’t say anything, it’s better to say nothing at all. I watched the Keanu Reeves movie and didn’t like it; so I didn’t watch the TV stuff. People I respect have told me it was decent though.

two months ago my latest book came out after 3 years of work, a 240 pages watercolor painting graphic novel about a very harsh topic. it is selling well and getting really good reviews - and I'm proud of it, it's a good book and it helped a lot of people by the reviews I'm getting.
and instead of working on the promotion and else I decided to cut off all my professional networks and involve myself at 100% in my one piece hyperfixation, discovering the anime, making an AU and a webcomic. It's infinitely less good than everything I wrote before, it's often poorly made and just shitpost, and the first time I write in another language than french
And it was the best fucking professional decision I ever made.

I remember when Larry Hama was promoting the Snake Eyes movie I was baffled since the movie does a disservice to Snake Eyes as a character. But a few weeks ago I heard that he's doing signatures to help pay for his medical bills because he has very bad arthritis to the point he can't draw much anymore. It's a sad trend that many older comic book creators had to resort to this because they got screwed over by the companies they worked for. Another example would be Peter David.
This made me wonder if he promoted the Snake Eyes movie just to help pay his medical bills because Hasbro fucked him over.

was reading Sherlock holmes and this popped into my head
#I’m fine with writers doing something different with a character but they keep making them weirdly mean for no reason#please stop mischaracterizing the blorbos#Sherlock is not a heartless machine of a man. he has allot of compassion he just has trouble properly expressing it.#Why do they keep making him emotionless and broody#well the broody is accurate#stop making him mean to Watson that’s his hypeman bestie soulmate he would kill and die for#And he has a sense of humor. he’s described laughing giggling or chuckling in the books allot. Especially at his own jokes#Batman is a genuinely good person who cares about the people around him and also the entirety of Gotham#He cares about his mentally unwell villains and wants them to get the help they need#And he also doesn’t kill. Under any circumstance. That’s a big part of his character idk how anyone could miss that#the mischaracterization of Batman is so bad it’s effecting the comics#It’s spreading like a infection#Superman is sweet and kind and full of love for humanity#he’s ridiculously powerful and uses that power to selflessly help others#most importantly he’s just a farmboy from Kansas#Not that deep into Superman lore sorry#There’s hope for the future of Superman and Batman movies#which is nice#Sherlock holmes#acd sherlock#Superman#batman#Dc
