In speaking of gender bender comedies in manga and comics I remember when I was at book off once and stumbled upon this graphic novel about a transman magical girl. The premise is that there's this teenage transman (ftm transgender person) who one day is forced to become a magical girl. It turns out he comes from a long line of magical girls including his mother and she didn't bother to tell him. So now he has to become a magical girl which would probably mess with his gender dysphoria and shenanigans ensue.

It was a western graphic novel with the art style I would describe as something out of tumblr. I don't even mean it as an insult but like it feels like this was created by a tumblr artist. It looks better than what you would imagine as "tumblr art style". There were no sunburnt noses that the tumblr art style is known for. If anything, it looked like a competently made webcomic with pseudo anime influences. Basically, it's art style was the She Ra reboot cartoon but more weebish. The artist might even still have their page on this site. It's just something I thought was interesting. Especially, since with gender bender comedies it's usually MTF. While there are lots of FTM stories MTF tends to outnumber them.

American creators looking down on genre media unless it's propped by twelve levels of irony is something that goes back to at the very least the 80s.

There's a lot to be said about how 80-90s action cartoons were treated, compared to comedy cartoons. And that's just one example off the top of my head.

There's absolutely a trend of some creators creators thinking they're the funniest fucks around and looking down on action, sci-fi and fantasy.
