Imagine you were roommates with someone who didn’t speak your language. And like. You guys are best friends, you love your roommate so much. You hang out all the time and it’s great.

But sometimes when you go to scratch an itch they suddenly get so upset. Like they’ll yell or clap or make weird sounds. You have no idea why because you’re itchy. You gotta scratch the itch! But it makes them so upset that you only scratch itches when they aren’t around.

Otherwise stuff is fine, they feed you and you’re happy living with them. You play games and stuff and even though you don’t speak the same language you both have a lot of fun. It’s just that sometimes they’ll burst out for no reason and you just get to deal with it.

That’s basically what it’s like for our pets, I think.

One of my past cats would come running, skidding up the corridor, as soon as she heard the Star Wars theme. No other John Williams score did it. She'd watch fascinated, and especially loved the lightsabre fights. One of my current floofs loves shark videos and LOTR extended editions.

Dearborn doesn’t like sci-fi, what does she like? And is there anything Polk doesn’t like?

Well, saying she doesn't like scifi was a bit of a joke, but it was also kinda based in fact!

Basically, both of the cats like "fixed camera" video -- it's why they like those "tv for cats" channels, and also tool repair videos, because there's only one POV and it doesn't change very often. It's also why Dearborn really loves both American football and Soccer football, because a lot of the footage is a large empty field with small creatures running around on it. They want to watch things move into and out of frame, rather than the frame itself changing.

Mostly it's just that Polk's patience for video is longer than Dearborn's. They'll both watch five or ten minutes of a movie like Dune, where there's lots of lights and cuts between people and changes of POV, but eventually Polk will settle in and just stare into the middle distance through the TV, while Dearborn gets bored and wanders off to stand guard in the hallway or use the scratching post or yell at the cat down the hall through the front door.

But it is very funny to just pretend the cats have certain genre preferences. I should try them on noir sometime. :D
