Worldbuilding Food: More than meets the eye
So, you want to world build food but maybe you don't know where to start, have hit a roadblock, or are just looking for some interesting places to addon to. I've got your back.
Tumblr media
Vegetables, Fruits, Grain, Nuts, & Fungi
Tumblr media
One of the first things I think of when it comes to food is fruits and vegetables, and the line between them is surprisingly small.
Like tomatoes are vegetables? Pumpkins are fruits but other gourds are not? When does a herb become a vegetable? Although important to classify, don't let it be your main focus.
Start with
How the produce grows
What it looks like throughout different stages of its life
What parts are edible
How most people consume the produce
How the product is harvested
Is it seasonal
What about the produce that makes its growable environment habitable
How it spreads/reproduces
There's many different unique ways fruits and vegetables grow in just our real world, but that doesn't mean you can stop there.
Cranberries grow on vines that actually float on the surface of soggy ground and water in wetlands. Cashews actually grow on the bottom of cashew apple, which is it's own edible product. There's lots of different ways plants can grow, and what they even need to do so.
Some produce even have their own defense mechanisms (which often which becomes a form of flavor to us). Don't think these defense mechanisms stop at protection from predators. Strawberries are an aggressive plant, fighting, killing, and taking over any nearby plant neighbors. Some plants have thistles and thorns, and others are the hard shell or peel we end up effortlessly cutting through.
Try to think of some environmental things in the world your working with that the produce would have adapted to.
I think my favor example of this IRL is sunflowers. They change directions to face the sun, and when they can't find the sun they face each other. Eventually their seeds weigh them down, and which they'll always face east.
Don't forget fungi is edible too, and has it's very own unique properties.
(Don't forget yeast -> bread, you can make up whatever food you want)
Meats & Agricultural Animals
Tumblr media
I myself am not a meat-eater, but I understand the importance of animal products to a society. If you world doesn't have it, don't fret. This sector won't just be about meat products, but it will contain a lot of it.
Food and what animals are considered for consumption changes from culture to culture. The same can be said for treatment leading up to their role in society as the food on people's plates. Often times a culture cannot imagining eating an animal they see as part of the family, such as dogs or cats IRL, but other times it's seen part of a religious practice such as cows.
There's a lot of cultural stuff that goes into our agricultural animals, both for work, dairy, textiles, and food.
Here's some ideas to start with
What parts of them are edible and used for food
Do they produce any dairy or egg products
How old do they have to be before becoming a produce animal
Are the animals used for other resources too i.e. bones, fur, skins, skulls, blood, etc.
How much food does one animal make
Typically how are they are killed, if they are
What conditions are these animals kept in and are they viewed humane
What environments allow these animals to thrive alongside the people of your world
What does the animal eat
Now... Let's into some culture and religion
Religion and culture has a major impact on what we eat. Take for instance Kosher, Halal, and more. Historical shortages in food even to this day affect what foods we eat. Culture also affects our tastes. The corn line of the United States is drowning in corn, and yet corn is seen as a sweet treat over seas in many nations.
Harvesting
Tumblr media
How the harvesting goes changes a lot about a society, big and small. Think about how terrible a year would go in medieval times if harvest came up incredibly poor, or how wealthy our modern day world would look to those people due to mass production.
Here's some things to think about
What time of year are the biggest and most important harvest(s)
How common are agricultural workers
What would the average person see if they watched people work
What technology/tools are used
What happens if the harvest goes wrong
Do farmers/harvesters get special rights for their role in society
In older societies harvesting and how that went completely shaped how the next year would look. In some cultures the harvesters have been revered, while in other if crossed to far would be expected to tear the country to pieces. Think about the role harvesting plays in your society. What would happen if they striked? Or if a disaster swept the land?
The environment itself will change a lot about what harvesting look likes. Why does this environment work? What are the environmental risk to both the crop and workers?
Are we farming in the water, in the middle of the arctic, underground, high up in the trees?
Exotic Food & Immigration
Tumblr media
While establish what the everyday food in the area is, don't forget to pay mine to the opposites. Immigration and trade play a major role in what foods end up on our plate. As cultures combine and mingle so do their food.
Take one look at the United States, infamous for it's large potions, fatty foods, and immigrant culture cuisine. A lot of foods in the United States are the results of cultures meeting to improve and add onto one another's foods, that includes American styles of pizza, tacos, and more.
Even major cities around the world have styles of foods unique to them.
Let's think
What locally seen foods count as exotic
What foods are nearly impossible to get
Is there access to foreign brands/produce
How expensive is most exotic foods
What styles of cooking are being brought in by foreigners
How do people get exotic foods
What foods would the locals not be able to eat due to not being used to it
Try to think about what makes this food exotic in the local area. Maybe it cannot grow in the local environment. Maybe the quality of the food is simply better overseas. Maybe the animal or plant is far too aggressively invasive for locals.
Trade & Transport
Tumblr media
Food is both a very important export and import, especially in time of devastation.
Don't forget about exports too, what is your society giving out to the world, and getting back. Not all trade has to be capital based. Perhaps your world simply trades on good or service for another.
Here's some things to think about
What's being exported and imported
Are whole animals imported/exported
How is the trade being done i.e. trains, boats, aircraft, teleportation, etc.
Are there any obstacles to trade
What places are all involved in trading
How is the trade brought to where it needs to be inland
In what ways do these trades improve the lives of locals
Transportation is also super important to where food ends up, and more so in what volumes. How do people get all these produce or animals relocated? What kinds of storage are we seeing to keep things fresh (if health standards are even up to code in your worldbuilding)?
What poses a threat to things in storage? i.e. mold, foxes, animal thieves, disease, etc.
Restrictions
Tumblr media
With supply and demand, comes outages, taxes, and restrictions. Unfortunately not everything in the food world goes right. There's natural disasters to come and destroy crops, hostile settlements to block trade, and especially that person who is really bad at cooking but they love doing it so you don't have the heart to say no....
Anyway let's talk restrictions and where they can come from
Wartime
Wartime can cause a lot of original farmers and workers to become soldiers. It also can lead to the large scale destruction of precious farm land, crops, animals, and overall places to cook.
Laws
Perhaps there's a particularly poisonous food, and way too many suspiciously poisoned people. That's when law comes in. There's many reasons for food and drink to become outlawed. Religious reasons, danger, regulations, inebriation, etc.
Siege/Embargo/Thievery
Knock knock! It's the United States here to embargo your random country. Outside factions can always become an obstacle, leading to loss of traveling cargo or straight up missing farmers too. Nothing comes in, and sometimes nothing comes out.
Endangered
Perhaps a common plant or favored animal is running low on populous. Now locals are more so focused on reanimating a dwindling population, more so on eating it.
Sickness
Whether it be hoards of invasive bugs, prion disease caused by cannibalistic animal feed, or sudden inexplicable field of dead corn sickness happens. Maybe something has swept over the land, and no one ever bothered to try to plant said crop again.
Natural Disasters
Natural disasters can not only cause the elimination of entire villages, but accidentally bring in lots of invasive creatures too. Catfish is off the menu for as long as carp is intown.
Straight Up Difficulty
Sometimes a fruit appears once a year, or a tasty creature is a dangerous one to take on in order to eat. It can be difficult getting the right ingredient sometimes. Other times it's new to the market. So much can happen when food is involved.
Preparation & Flavor
Tumblr media
Finally all the food in the world is available, but what are we going to do with it.
Make it even better!
I personally find preparation to be the best part of worldbuilding. Now I get to imagine my fictional little people stewing their pots, and kindling their fires. Reflect off of real world recipes, and maybe even write down exact fantasy recipes of your own.
Don't forget about herbs and spices (I see you British people).
You have five basic taste receptors in your mouth: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savory. They make great descriptors and fun places to explore when looking into what your foods taste like. Smell can play an important role too.
Does it smell awful and taste great, smell sweet and taste bitter, perhaps it doesn't have anything at all going on.
Happy worldbuilding!

Stan Marsh
26 y.o (He/Him)
Soul Synergy: Anything you write on your skin will appear on your soulmate.
Headcanons:
◇ Worked on his father's farm for years, while he didn't want to he stayed for his mom
◇ Shelly moved out and left South Park for a different college. The two aren't close, but they're better than when he was a kid.
◇ He works part-time at the university radio station with Jimmy.
》 Jimmy does most of the commentary, Stan will pitch it sometimes, but he leaves most of the talking to him. Stan is in charge of the music
◇ He has snuck some of Crimson Dawn on air and did the same for Timmy's band. Jimmy doesn't care, but he gives Stan a hard time about it.
◇ Going to college on a sports scholarship, to no one's surprise
》 The surprise came when he almost lost it all.
◇ He struggled heavily with alcoholism when he first moved out of his parents house
◇ Used to go out night after night, being invited to parties and hang out events
◇ It didn't seem like a problem until he woke up with vomit in his hair and had no memory of the last three days.
》 His hair used to be longer but he decided to cut it after that.
◇ It takes the other three to help snap him out of it, not just Kyle.
◇ After that he went and got help, of course the other three had his back. Kyle helped him find the support groups needed around campus. Kenny spread the word of keeping alcohol away from Stan, and Cartman enforced it.
◇ They have a system when they go to parties or out to eat with him. Kenny will give everyone the warning, do not offer him alcohol. Not as a joke, it's not funny. Wanna flirt with him, buy him something else. If you invite him to a party, have some fucking sodas or juice.
◇ Cartman is the next step if for some reason you don't decide to listen. Absolutely embarrasses the person, socially tears them apart. We all know he's very good at turning a crowd on people.
◇ Kyle is the big guns, he lives with Stan. He's his best friend. His super best friend, and he'll be damned if he lets anything happen to him. Kyle's not afraid to let the person know just how small they are and will throw hands if need be.
》 Luckily, it hasn't gotten that far. Most people stop at Cartman.
◇ Stan has worked very hard since then to keep himself clean. He's cut alcohol out completely because he knows how easy it is to slip back into it.
◇ When he feels himself slipping again or tempted, he goes to the gym. He writes a song, goes for a jog, bugs someone with board games, does literally anything to keep his mind off it.
》 His last resort is smoking a cigarette, Kyle doesn't like it, but it's better than the alternative
◇ Stan was able to keep his scholarship but it took a lot of work, and a lot of dedication.
◇ The necklace was a gift from the three boys after Stan's second year clean. They all wrote something up on each line and had Kenny carve it in.
》 Kyle: I'm proud of you man. Keep it up, or I'll kick your ass. -SB
》 Kenny: I am always a call away. I've got you Stan, I love you handsome.
》 Cartman: Don't be fucking stupid. I'm the only one who gets to ruin your life.
(Cartman took up some of Kyle's line. It makes Stan smile everytime he sees it)
◇ It's incredibly corny and off brand for him but he never takes it off, that necklace means everything to him.
◇ He's still the quarterback on the team, and the pressure sometimes gets to him.
◇ He plays basketball with Kyle sometimes, but he's not a fan of getting his ankles rolled all the time so he only does it when he needs to get Kyle to relax
◇ His depression is still there, it never really goes away, but he's got a better understanding of it
◇ Goes to a proper doctor and gets the help he needs. After a few therapist visits, he gets a prescription for it and now here he is.
◇ Since Kenny and Karen live so close Karen helps remind him to take his meds. She leaves him little snacks with every pills.
》 Skittles one day, M&Ms another, Cashews, and then a Reese's cup at the end of the week (I just like the idea of the group adopting Karen, but she adopts them back ya know?)
◇ No one else knows about this, Stan's a bit embarrassed by it but he finds it adorable that she's trying
◇ It makes him want to be better. So he works hard to keep a routine and a method.
◇ When he feels like he hates himself, he showers
◇ When he feels like he hates other people, he needs to eat
◇ When he feels withdrawal or if he's tired, he needs water.
◇ Has a special water bottle that Gary got him.
◇ Begs Kyle to go to the gym with him, he can't go alone he needs his buddy!
》 They end up making it a game. Who can push the other one to giving up.
》 Kyle does a certain number in a set, well Stan does one more. Stan runs for a certain amount of time on the treadmill, well Kyle runs faster and longer.
》 They pay for it in the morning but it's worth it
◇ Was the forever DM in his board game nights. He has all the D&D books, most of them are those special covered ones
◇ The local comic book store knows him well, and they save a book for him when they come out
◇ He still paints minis, for Christmas one year he got everyone's characters! Hand painted them and gave them out
》 He was so proud. And then Kenny lost his character the next session
》 Kenny's character is on the shelf near his books. Forever immortalized next to the players guide
◇ On days where everyone can't make it they play test a different system
◇ Wild Talents -> Superheros
◇ Deadlands -> Cowboys
◇ Traveler -> Sci-fi
◇ Red Market -> Zombie Apocalypse
◇ When Stan finally finishes his campaign and Kyle takes over, it takes him a minute to shift back into being a player! (I'm projecting)
◇ He has Wendy and Nichole over, of course! They can't make it all the time (Nichole has her own campaign that Stan's a part of and Wendy is a busy little lady), so they guest star!
◇ Gets together with Nichole and they plot ways to bully their players. (Rip Kenneth)
》 If people don't feel like playing TTRPGS he's got plenty of board games! (Honestly dude I can go on forever about this. I'm big time projecting, so I'm gonna end it here.)
◇ Stan loves his messenger bag, its got more patches in it then just the deftones on the side
◇ Collects band patches like a punk does for their jackets
◇ Anytime he goes to a local band gig he buys a patch (support local artists)
◇ Of course he has his guitar. Even if I didn't draw it!
◇ Cherry red guitar that he babies, he loves his guitar more then anything else he owns.
◇ Kyle got it for him when they both graduated high-school, it means the world to him
◇ His case for it has seen better days, most of the scratches are covered in stickers people have slapped on it.
◇ Honestly, he's got like one or two that he put on
◇ It's a game around the university: Get a Sticker on Marsh's Case
》 Craig's in the lead.
◇ Like Kyle does with Stan's inhaler. Stan carries insulin in his messenger bag for Kyle.
》 He knows Kyle doesn't pay attention to himself and lets his blood sugar drop so he also carries snacks
◇ The bright pink lighter and the lighter case was given to him by the guys, because that dummy always loses his lighter.
》 Every other day he's asking to borrow a lighter because he lost his
◇ Yet he knows where everyone of his guitar picks are, which is ridiculous
◇ Has a shit ton of them too, carries them in a little case!
◇ Stan will fist fight anyone who touches that brown journal, there's so much in there. (You know that feeling you get when someone asks to see your sketchbook? Yeah.)
◇ Lyrics for Crimson Dawn, poems that will never see the light of day, magic cards he uses as bookmarks, and campaign ideas
》 A few pages that have been ripped out and or burned out. Usually means he's had a bad day and needed to get it out
◇ The other thing he's protective of is his headphones, he's not sure why. There's nothing special about those white headphones. But they're his, and they got him through high-school.
◇ He was actually super happy about his Soul Synergy
◇ He already had a habit of doodling on his skin, so it was a surprise it manifested like this
◇ Kyle does get onto him about how often he marks on his skin. He orders Stan those Body Mark markers.
◇ When pictures or words show up on his skin it tickles, it's like he can feel the marker or pen
◇ That's the only part he hates, it tickles him and he's extremely ticklish (perish.)
◇ Doodles, lists, lyrics, and notes on things to do later. For some reason he's protective over all of them, and it makes him slightly sad when they go away.
It a few hours of sitting still, but it's finally done. Red takes a wipe and swipes it across his forearm, the moist wipe feels good against his skin. It's irritated from being poked over and over again, he can still feel the buzz of the needle.
The wipe reveals the jagged Soundwave tattoo stretching down his forearm. He smiles at it and almost goes to touch it, but stops himself. From the way his tattoo artist glares at him, he knows better.
He tries, he really does, to listen to Red as she goes through the steps on how to take care of it. But it's hard when he keeps staring at it, wondering if his little plan worked.
On the outside, it certainly seems narcissistic to get one's voice tattooed on one's self. But Stan could live with the whispers or the questions if it meant it was on the skin of his soulmate too. It wasn't anyone else's business what it was, that was between him and them.
After all Stan worked very hard to get that recording of him singing, You are my Sunshine, just right.

liv i love broccoli too if its ok can you tell me how you make the soup I've never heard of it ...
sure thing little guy!! i literally just finished making it so i will tell u how i did it <3 pls keep in mind i a) made this up and b) am vegan—so there are lots of things that you might change if you make this yourself!!
liv's made up broccoli soup recipe <3
ingredients:
2 heads of broccoli
1 yellow onion
1 clove of garlic, minced
1/4 cup of raw cashews soaked overnight (or for 20 mins in boiling water) OR 1/4 cup of cream if you aren't vegan/dairy free
2 tbsp of a soft/creamy cheese (i used a vegan herb and garlic cream cheese! you could use plain cream cheese or anything similar)
2 tbsp boullion paste + 1L of water (or just 1L of your stock of choice)
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp lemon juice
olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
preheat your oven to 200c/400f and line a baking sheet with parchment
wash your broccoli, then separate the florets from the stems. set the florets aside for a second
make sure you trim the base of the stems (it can be woody like asparagus!) and then peel the outer layer of the stem off since it's usually a bit tough. once the stem is peeled, dice it into small pieces (around 1cm cubes) and set aside
peel/dice your onion (this doesn't have to be pretty because you're gonna blend it later) and put it into a large saucepan w a bit of olive oil and start cooking it over medium heat.
while your onion is cooking, spread the broccoli florets out on the lined baking sheet. toss w olive oil, salt, pepper, smoked paprika and red pepper flakes and then put it in the oven to roast for 15 mins.
once the onion is translucent, add the diced broccoli stem and the garlic and saute that for about 5 minutes, then add your boullion paste/water (or stock!) and let simmer that on med-low heat, covered, for about 10 minutes until everything is SUPER soft.
after 10 minutes, blend the soup with the cashews (or cream) and the cream cheese in a high power blender until it's totally smooth. return this to the pot on low heat.
add the roasted broccoli once it's lightly browned and softened (but still has a bit of bite! like al dente pasta!) and stir to combine.
i added a bit more black pepper and a tiny bit of lemon juice to balance everything else, but that's rly to your own taste. otherwise that's it!!

[ID: An image of goldfish crackers in a tupperware container on my kitchen counter. They are shot very close-up and covered in delicious seasoning.]
I finished the last of my Old Bay goldfish last week, so I tried the bootleg recipe and it's pretty good! Plus the flavoring is a little looser so when I put a bunch of goldfish and cashews in a bag and shake them up together the nuts get some Old Bay too.
The recipe is on a site RIDDLED with ads so:
Old Bay Goldfish
1 bag (6.6oz) Original Goldfish (not the cheddar -- look for the blue bag. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.)
5 Tbsp (70g) unsalted butter
1.5 Tbsp Old Bay seasoning
The recipe also called for 1/8 Tsp "Accent" (MSG) but I didn't happen to have any and it was fine without it.
Heat oven to 250F. Pour crackers into a large bowl; melt butter in a normal bowl and stir Old Bay seasoning into the butter. Pour flavoring mixture over goldfish and stir to coat; be ginger but thorough (stir gently but a lot).
Spread crackers on a baking sheet -- I actually used a cake pan to minimize spillage -- and bake, stirring every 10 minutes, for 20-40 minutes, until crackers are "dry". Mine took 25 minutes.
Let cool and store in airtight container.

vegan Cashew Ricotta
What makes this cashew ricotta recipe so special is the balance of flavors. The cashews provide that rich, creamy base, while lemon juice and apple cider vinegar add a perfect tang that mimics traditional ricotta. A touch of nutritional yeast adds a subtle cheesy flavor without any dairy. You can also mix in fresh herbs like basil or parsley for extra freshness and complexity. It’s a great addition to any plant-based meal!
It's perfect for all your favorite dishes, or use as a dip or spread. You'll love it!
