Jewish TK Strand headcanons:

you give me canonically Jewish characters it is my duty as a Jewish fan to make one of these:

When TK was a kid in Hebrew school learning about the Purim story TK once asked his teacher if Haman had a crush on Ahasuerus and was jealous of Mordecai and that's why he was acting like that, the teacher was too stunned to speak

Purim was TK's favorite holiday as a kid because he loved making Hamantaschen with his Mom, but because he wanted to seem cool he would tell people it was his favorite for the costumes

Before TK was sober he also loved the holiday and used it's drinking culture as an excuse, so after he got sober the first time he wasn't sure he could ever celebrate the holiday again without feeling guilty

eventually, after Gwyn dies, trying to connect with her he volunteers at a local synagogue's Purim carnival and his love for the holiday as reignited and he finds its a way he can honor his mom

When TK got his first tattoo Gwyn was distraught and kept freaking out about TK couldn't be buried with her family anymore

TK responded with telling her she was one to talk because she married a goy, Gwyn paused her rant to laugh and tell TK he had a point

TK loves a good yiddish insult

even though TK doesn't really go to services, since he started working at the same firehouse as Owen, Owen always made sure TK was scheduled off for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in case he wanted to go to services

When he was first learning how to write Hebrew, TK was thrilled that it was a right to left language because as a leftie he finally was able to write without smugging anything

don't ask him to write anything in Hebrew now though because he forgot it all

TK was bar mitzvahed and he couldn't decide on a party theme for months making both his parents go crazy

TK wanted to break the glass at his wedding but it took awhile to convince Carlos to let him do it because Carlos was so sure with how accident prone TK is he would be one of the grooms who has to go get stitches on their foot on their wedding day from breaking the glass wrong (luckily TK broke the glass and did not require medical attention)

TK lights a yahrzeit candle every year for his mom's yahrzeit to honor her

he wasn't sure if it would be over stepping but he does it on the anniversary of Gabriel's death too, Carlos cried because he was so touched

When TK was in high school Gwyn forced him to go to a USY/NFTY/BBYO event and he very quickly ended up on the spit chain chart that connects to Malia Obama

okay y'all sometime in december im going to write about the holidays, and since the Pine's are canon Jewish i wanna do some audience research. im putting this out now so it has some time to circulate before the holidays start

it would mean the world to me you guys could tell me your favorite Hanukkah traditions/celebrations. it could be what you do or what you think the Pines would do, either way. i would love something super niche and specific to make it feel real. im atheist but my family celebrates christmas. so i don't want to write a really detailed christmas and leave Hanukkah lacking by including just the basics 😭

please let me know if this is disrespectful in any way, my only intention is to create better and more inclusive writing.

Stupid sexy post-canon Jewish Aldridges headcanon incoming …

They’re staunchly Reform, of course. Rose (who eventually converted) is much more observant than Atticus, who’s basically just keeping up appearances because Lord Sinderby Would Disapprove Otherwise (he’s alright struggling with Hashem, just not his father). However, and for reasons that are entirely their own, they eventually decide to keep … well, not entirely shomer negiah, but shomer niddah. And they’re having such terrific fun with it. In a very meaningful way, of course.

When they’re staying at Downton during the war years, Rose needs to go all the way to Leeds to have access to a mikveh. She still wants to do it properly. It’s a mitzvah after all, shut up Atticus. So they decide to make it their thing, go together, stay at a nice hotel, do what one does at long last after the mikveh.

At some point, however, timing is inconvenient. So one night at dinner, the Completely Clueless Crawleys urge them to reschedule.

They can’t. They won’t. It’s a Jewish Thing, they try to explain, blushing (but not because they’re ashamed to be Jewish). But it’s not a holiday, not even Shabbat, Cora remarks. She understands a bit, but not enough.

If it’s just an appointment with “what do you call your Jewish priests at your Jewish church again”, probably something to do with the refugee children, surely they don’t have to stay overnight? When Rose tries to explain it’s not about that, it’s a ritual for women, someone points out that Atticus might as well stay back then and attend the house party or charity thing or whatever it is without her instead. He’s not a woman after all, and Rose has always been very independent, she won’t need a chaperone won’t she?

She could, of course, but she doesn't want to. And neither does Atticus.

They spend an embarrassingly long time basically discussing the logistics of the Aldridges’ sex life over a polite dinner conversation, with no one but the Resident Jews being any the wiser.

Rose is mortified and loves every bit of it. Atticus really needs a drink.

Sat across the table, Lord and Lady Sinderby are positively dying.

I am sick and fucking tired of the fandomsphere's obsession with explicit canon. A character can be coded to hell and back and people will still refuse to acknowledge it unless the character looks directly into the camera and says "I'm [marginalized identity]."

The Spider-Verse movies made Peter B Parker Jewish and made Gwen Stacy trans. I don't give a shit if it's never said outright. It's canon. Peter B Parker has a Jewish wedding on-screen and shows off Hannukah bling in promotional material. He's Jewish. Gwen has a trans flag in her room and a trans-coded coming-out story that peaks with being cast in clear and intentional trans flag lighting. She's trans. Good on Spider-Verse for giving us solid representation without sacrificing time that should be spent on the characters' stories to bring explicit attention to their identities! The consequence is that you can't say he's Jewish or say she's trans in a public forum without having to pull out screenshots to prove your case.

Those are just two irksome examples from the same franchise, but this happens all the time across all fandom media. If you refuse to accept evidence and coding as proof, then you're perpetuating the idea that privileged identities are more normal and default than marginalized ones. Gwen shouldn't need to say "I'm trans" and Peter B shouldn't need to say "I'm Jewish" on-screen. No character should ever have to do that, because we never expect a character to reveal that they're canonically cisgender or goyishe.

We all know that the reason why Bruce Wayne isn't religiously Jewish is because dc are cowards, but also because many of the community itself is cowards. I personally believe it comes from a lack of knowledge about what it even means to be religious because most of the community is Christian or culturally Christian. So as someone that would probably be considered not religious by Christians, but Religious by most other Jewish people, I think that Bruce Wayne fits in this section of being Jewish.

Bruce can't go to the Synagogue often because of the whole being Batman stuff, but he still goes on the high holidays when he can. He celebrates with the Kane family as well! And Kate would obviously understand if he couldn't come because she's Batwoman! Give me a Bruce Wayne says Yiddish curses. Give me a Batman that has a bunch of Chanukkiot that are just so pretty because they are rich and definitely have a ton. Give me Batfamily shabbat dinners when they are able to. Rest days on Saturday for the Jewish members when they are more members in the Batfam to make it work (and it being a mitzvah when he does have to be Batman on Shabbat because its a mitzvah to save a life). Give me Mezuzot on every entryway. Give me a Bruce Wayne who inherited his mother's seder plates and actually uses them. Give me a Bruce Wayne that says stuff like kein ayin hara before giving good news! Give me a confused Dick Grayson when Bruce insults him (its actually a compliment, but to ward against the evil eye you will say the opposite of what you mean) and then Bruce having to explain after he realizes that Dick has no idea why he just insulted him. Give me a Batman that follows Jewish values (more than he canonically does)

Just because someone ins't actively involved within a wider community of that Religion doesn't mean they aren't Religious! Or at least don't give me a culturally Jewish Bruce Wayne that doesn't do any of this. Thats just you stripping away all the Jewish parts of him.

Hello Newsies fandom, for your casual viewing pleasure (and because apparently some people think headcanoning the Jacobs family as Jewish is antisemitic), here is the exact passage from the official Newsies novel that states Davey is Jewish and Jack is Irish :D

It's not a headcanon, it's literally written in the source material and, even if it wasn't, this fandom has been headcanoning characters' ethnicities based on their names since 1992. They're street kids living in New York City in 1899, they're going to be a diverse group and the best thing we have to go on is their names. I know my group of mutuals headcanon at least two other characters as Jewish, somewhat if not entirely based on their names.

Like, I don't know how else to explain that headcanoning a character with a traditionally Jewish name isn't "stereotyping" it's literally just being like "oh hey, this whole family has really common Jewish names, it would be fun if they're Jewish" and then we all move on with our lives because it's also literally canon. Like, it would be bad if we were headcanoning a character as Jewish purely because they exhibit behaviors that are also associated with negative Jewish stereotypes but that's literally not what's happening here. Also I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in the non-dialogue parts of the script somewhere but I don't have access to that.

In conclusion, don't be weird about people headcanoning characters as minorities, it's not stereotyping it's literally just people existing.

(Also, I am not Jewish, so I do not at all claim to be any kind of authority on representation. If any Jewish bloggers want to weigh in I will happily read and be open to learning!)

Erik and David are both Jewish (culturally at least) I need more canon interactions between them!! They have a common connection that isn't shared by Charles so it would be a good opportunity to have one on one time. They can bond over Shabbat dinner while talking about their complicated relationship with family 🥺 I don't see Erik as a practicing Jew but David could encourage him to engage with the religion more, and Erik is shown to care about and trust David despite Charles open distrust of him. I think that if they had gotten a chance to be around each other more Erik could have become a fatherly figure to him (tho let's be honest he's basically already David's step dad) and that practicing Jewish traditions together could be a healing experience for both.

I know David tried to kill Erik in Legion Quest but he was much younger then and thought that Erik was the reason why his mom and dad broke up XD There's a lot to unpack there and I think the more stable version of David we see in the Krakoa era would understand Charles and Erik's relationship better. Plus Erik is shown to be more emotionally available to his kids than Charles is and David needs that kind of parental relationship in his life.
