rook being such a nobody and surrounded by more influential companions right after the obviously well known inquisitor could be really cool actually. that conversation w solas 'what will they call you after this is done' <- NO FUCKING CLUE LOL!! the idea that this millennia long, world-ending story of gods and a herald being controlled for a moment by a nobody is incredible. they start as an irritant and end having saved the world. nobody thanks them. they go back home. maybe they're literally wiped off the face of the world when they're trapped in the fade with the dread wolf! and most of all, their name is not remembered. literally, because they become a 'rook' to the inquisitor's king.

like i’m actually really liking the idea that the inquisitor and rook get conflated into the same person by the public and by history, and what little agency they had is taken away. you were never in control of this story. your narrative will be written by other people, just like every figurehead that came before you. you are not the chosen one. the choice to have faded out and see the irrelevancy as a boon, or struggle to make your name known (not rook, not the nickname, not the title) would have been so. interesting.

veilguard is a heroic story (and the game doesn’t even let you be rude most of the time) that has to end heroically (the evanuris are defeated in some way, the last archdemon dies, and most rooks climb down from minrathous to literal cheers and applause) but the hero themself is forgettable. narratively that could have been so funnnn. but it wasn’t on purpose so it just feels hollow.

I realized another specific thing I don't like about people asking me for patterns: the idea that there is One Specific Way to crochet something.

This is part of a broader issue I have about the distinction between crafts and arts that I think about a lot, but in this particular context, I don't like the idea of people restricting themselves and refraining from experimenting with crochet because they think there is a Right way or only One way to make something. What pattern? Just look at the thing I made (which by the way, in asking immediately for the pattern you're kind of devaluing this art piece I've made as some kind of trinket you should also possess, but that's a slightly different issue) and make your own thing like it. Even if you followed my notes exactly, you wouldn't have the same exact result as mine unless you had my exact tension, yarn, and physical quirks of crocheting. I don't even have the same result following my own notes in subsequent crochets because it's all slightly different each time. You would have something that looks similar to mine but is your own, and that's something you could achieve just by trying to make your own thing from the get go. Doesn't require a pattern.

Use your eyes, work stitch by stitch and row by row. If it's as you think and there is only one correct way to do it, then you can try and figure it out. Doesn't require a pattern. As their relationship grows more serious and deeper do you think he'd ever feel guilty for keeping that from them? If their relationship ever reaches the point of marriage for example, would he feel like maybe he should let them know the bare minimum of his job? Especially if he's randomly gone for long periods of time, what does he tell them?

Absolutely! He very much does.

It's a considerable thing for him to hide. And he doesn't want to lie to the love of his life. But dually, he does NOT want them to be dragged into his world at any cost during the early stages of a relationship when they're not fully official. He doesn't want them to see him as what he does and he doesn't want them to know. He has to live with the horrors of it first hand, day in and out. He doesn't want to tell you anything that would make you change your opinion on him in that way.

Especially not when he's unsure how you'd react. He'd rather extensively prove that he is indeed just a regular guy and wants to have you love him as that without the constant worry that comes with having a military spouse. He wants you to see him for HIM and to see he's worth loving before. He wants to be seen and loved as a normal person for once, even if it is fleeting. And he doesn't want you to worry when everything is so fresh.

Is it a bit selfish? Absolutely. He knows it. But he's not a perfect man.

Not to mention, there's still security concerns and he's still wary of others. You can have the best intentions but he has to know without a single hint of doubt that you're not trying to trick him and aren't a spy. Dropping to someone new you like 'hey btw im an important military contractor' when people you want DEAD and you haven't fully vetted them or known them is a really, really bad idea.

The initial thing he tells them what he does for work is "private contractor". He leaves it at that. It's open for interpretation, and it's boring enough that most people won't ask what that entails. He keeps vague with his answers any ways and will always navigate away from it. That's his explanation why he's gone, too. He has to work jobs all around the world and that means flying out for large stretches of time. He never knows how long he'll be gone because he doesn't know how long the job will take. As for the limited cell phone use during then - he just goes with 'international data like that is extremely expensive.'

He'll still leave plenty of gifts and little hidden notes to occupy you as he's gone as it does tear him apart to have to do that, knowing very well he may not be back.

It's only when he's absolutely sure you're the one and engagement is possible that he'll reveal that he's a private military contractor. Because at that point, he's secure in knowing how you'd react and he knows you'd understand why he'd keep something like that hidden. Its for his safety and yours and it's not like he wanted to keep it away from you, but life is cruel and the world is a bitch - he knows what can happen if he doesn't think everything through and defaults to his heart alone.

Revealing such information isn't something you just do casually and when he knows he can trust you with that and knows you won't go talking or running for the hills, then he'll finally sit you down and have that talk.

He doesn't want to mislead you or surprise you with that after you tied the knot. He's never that unaware because that is something that can break a marriage. Revealing it before you even got engaged is a sign to show he ultimately trusts you and is taking a leap of faith. He doesn't want to mislead but when its that serious, you need to have an inkling of what you're getting into - and that you can lose him at any moment over there. He can't lie about something that serious or blot out details further when you very well might have someone come up on your doorstep, announcing his passing at any given time.

Not saying he goes into details or depth, he'll not be sitting there telling you how he bloodies his hands and cracks backs like glowsticks. But he'll be telling you that he does work a dangerous job and there's never a full guarantee he'll be back. He can try his best but death is always a possibility when a lot of what you're doing is in an active warzone.

Keep in mind, he's still sparing on the details. And this would be after years, when he's about to get down on one knee and pop the question. He'd have to be CERTAIN in his mind that he can trust you in everything and wouldn't judge, without a shadow of a doubt. He'll still keep his work and home life far, far away from each other - he's not going to be talking about details, but he's at the very least making sure you're aware and doubling his efforts to spend time together before he's deployed.

link click yingdu ep 1 is truly the gift that keeps on giving the more you think about it the more layers you unlock. at first i thought the 'video call with phone in shirt pocket' trick is a pretty effective way of replicating their dives with like.. normal human technology without their powers and then i realised that's probably because lu guang specifically thought 'this is a situation that would call for a dive except cheng xiaoshi doesn't know about the whole time travel powers thing yet, what would be a good and reasonable approximation of that that i can spring on him rn'. also, we know this is not the first time he's experiencing this day because he was checking the clock before he proposed the whole video call phone camera thing, implying that he had the 'script' for this day just like he did with the anime convention, but even then he could only warn cheng xiaoshi about the guy behind him with the bat right before he was about to get hit - probably because cheng xiaoshi kept 'doing unnecessary actions' and messing up the timeline/lu guang's 'script' and forcing him to improvise. once again, lu guang's trying to protect cheng xiaoshi while also hiding information from him and cheng xiaoshi's failing to follow lu guang's instructions and putting himself in danger because of his own kindness and impulsivity - their entire dynamic moving forwards, captured in their first (arguably more like.. the 0th) 'job' together.

i hc'd that kalim doesnt really get scared by ghosts and urban legends and to add onto that: i think kalim would be icked out by people with an interest in true crime.

like, the content hits uncomfortably close to his own encounters and some people frankly take a bit too much pleasure in going through all the gory details - wait, you're telling him there are people who fall asleep while listening to true crime podcasts?! on that note, some psychological thrillers (especially the 'adapted from true events' kind, compared to the 'dystopic social commentary' ones) would also fit into this category - just being plain uncomfortable to sit through, a movie/podcast/tv experience making him sick to his stomach.

i just think that kalim doesn't get the appeal at all, no matter the explanation. if someone tried to show him a few cases, he'd just be sitting in uncomfy silence.

(on the flipside, i think jamil hates horror movies with an abundance of jumpscares compared to slashers. he has an uncanny sense foretelling when they're gonna happen, but he still flinches during the actual jumpscare. bonus points if a fakeout is good, u get to see his soul jump out of his body twice.

on the topic of true crime, jamil just doesn't vibe with it, especially when it's not well-researched and/or poorly handled in its delivery. and like, he's already gotten the fearmongering-type of warnings* from the adults in his life plenty of times. he doesn't want to see it packaged in a spooky, edgy, internet detective-way, but he's more rational? understanding? of its appeal to others.)
