The best thing getting Spart brought to my life was having someone who's always game and happy to be with me and who someone who needs me.
The best thing getting Troj has brought to my life is that every time i look down or behind me shes standing there like:

this all said of course with the knowledge that i am a normie with shelties, which in old man dog trainer terms is a breed of poodle and not a quote real dog
#but ive been around for a little while#and came to dogs from horses#and honestly? the main difference between horse people and dog people#is that dogs are cheap

Honestly, the reason I very rarely get into actual training discussions is that I very rarely agree with the premise. I don't care to involve myself in how you, a professional or far-above-averagly engaged hobbyist dog trainer, approach your dogs. I may not necessarily agree with it, and it may not be aligned with what I would consider a harmonious household, but it's not actually my business. You can stack your dog with prongs and ecollars from sternum to axis and I'll just trust that your ethical barometer and situational reflexes are well tuned. It's not really an interesting topic for me to discuss.
But the vast vast majority of people who train, handle and own dogs aren't dedicated dog trainers. They're the people in front of and behind you in line at the grocery store. And if we can't agree that 1) a misplaced reward is probably a kinder failure than a misplaced correction and b) we owe it to the animals we brought into our lives for our own enjoyment to at least err on the side of kindness, and so the most generic public-facing baseline form of dog training should at least be reward-based, then I really don't know how to help.
#'but if you fuck up reward based traning can ALSO be aversive'#if someone fucks up rewards then i wouldnt trust them to give corrections either#its always the 'but what about the dogs who would otherwise be KILLED'#okay what about them?#are we talking about training norms and ethics#or are we talking about the ethics of last-ditch efforts?#because the cost benefit analysis of one vs the other doesnt necessarily go on the same spreadsheet i think

What the fuuuuck:
I’m sorry but comparing force free dog training to neglect because you aren’t willing to accept that not all dogs are behaviorally stable enough to live with people is so asinine.
The “balanced” folk will literally say anything negative against R+, force free, and other positive reinforcement heavy training methods but always they fail to do anything about actual abuse, heavy handedness, and actual aversive trainers parading themselves around as “balanced” (like I cannot take these folks seriously as balanced until they are actively doing something and speaking up).
My dogs aren’t “force free”, I’m LIMA (Least Invasive Minimally Aversive) trained but I believe heavily in R+ and that if R+ methods are what animal behaviorists are using for tigers, hyenas, and other dangerous non-domestic animals for cooperative care behaviors that this can AND should apply to dogs as well.
Dogs do not languish in shelters because of R+ and/or force free training methods. They languish there because many rescues are hoarding situations, because “adopt don’t shop” has done irreparable damage to people’s perception of ethical dog breeders, because so many dogs in shelters are BEHAVIORALLY UNSAFE for the average person, because we view euthanasia as a cruelty instead of a necessity to reduce behaviorally unstable dogs from society or a kindness from a cruel and scary life. There are worst things than dying. All the “balanced” training methods in the world will not change those things.
#false dichotomy up the wazoo but sure if you MUST#is it actually a major problem that dogs rot in shelters due to lack of aversive training opportunities?#or is it a bigger issue that the people with means* to take on a dog with severe behavioural problems#(*time skill experience living situation personal flexibility interest etc)#are 1) unicorns and 2) bogged down with highdemand dogs already#is your aversive approach a temporary training tool or a long term management strategy?

You know it's spring when the reindeer come down to graze in your backyard. This is a small bachelor herd, but notice the little youngster closest to the camera in the 2nd photo!
#reindeer#mountain reindeer#caribou#i'm from a different reindeer range (where they usually stay above the forest line) so this was a VERY different experience#when i first moved down here#they dont really care a whole lot about people passing by#but people are also very good w not approaching them#they'll keep an ear on u but unless you outright bother them they just eat and chill and scratch their butts#the herd i grew up in the range of you had to watch through binoculars :P

ah yes. the hardy little working dog of the shetland isles
after seeing @fjordfolk's recent posts, i got curious about how shelties are actually groomed to make them look like that. so here's a long but very detailed video explaining a lot of the "tricks".
youtube
...this is honestly completely absurd.
#imma be honest if this was my intro to sheltie grooming/show shelties i would have a different breed 😂#last time i went to a show we debated whether leave in conditioner and antistatic spray was technically allowed#everything added after the first 5 minutes of this vid would be a cause for DQ here#also unless i missed it did not show grooming the paws? which some also turn into a science#im not a super fan of how much is usually taken off the ears for AKC#imo it makes them stand out kinda awkwardly. look like little bandaid tags on top and really accentuates some poor ear sets#and youre right: this is not a lot. depending on dog and breeder people will really sculpt a lot (and then turn around and say#we're not a sculpted breed.)#the norm here would be to take off excess around the ears on the pasterns hocks and paws#but the trend seems to be to take off less and less#you certainly would not go ANYWHERE NEAR any body coat with a pair of scissors#my breeder would shoot me
