Ok I posted about this in anger a while back but I'm gonna say it more intelligently and actually tag it because I think it's something people need to hear. Something that bugs me about how people talk about the morality of the men in this game is that a lot of analysis totally glosses over Anya's motives and what she actually asks of people, and in doing so once again strips her of agency. Like. The reason Curly sucks isn't because he failed to properly punish Jimmy, it's because he ignored Anya in favor of her abuser. He didn't listen to her regarding how to move forward, he didn't give her a way to protect herself. No matter what he would have done to Jimmy, Anya is still traumatized and in danger, and that's the most important point of failure.

I think a lot of people are projecting a revenge fantasy on Anya, and while I'm not gonna argue about the validity of revenge here, for Anya specifically I think that's a major mischaracterization. She's the one who says that our worst moments don't make us monsters. And while yes, this could just be her trying to appease her abusers, she still doesn't strike me as a particularly vindictive person. She's a nurse, symbolically in a role associated with care and healing. Before the crash, she seems like a very soft-spoken and restrained person. Hell, she can't stand giving Curly his meds because she feels so bad for him. There isn't really a point in the game where she calls for violence at all. And even if punishing Jimmy or Curly is morally correct (subjective), saying that it's what anyone Should have done still glosses over Anya's wants and needs. It still centers the abuser, even in vitriol.

It's especially weird to see people judge Swansea on these grounds, because like... We don't know what his dynamic with Anya was like. We don't actually know what she said to him, if she even confided about her pregnancy or the SA at all! I honestly think Swansea's actions give more credence to the idea that Anya herself wanted a peaceful resolution. The whole "Oh, I'm holding it together" thing, him becoming more hostile after speaking with Anya... He waits until Daisuke AND ANYA are dead before trying to kill Jimmy. I think the obvious reading is that he wants Jimmy dead, but Anya asked him not to do anything crazy. Genuinely, I think Anya just wanted to be safe. She wanted out above everything. She didn't want more violence. The only violence she commits is against herself in the end, in order to escape this hell her coworkers made for her.

And like. Swansea is kind of the only one who actually did try to protect Anya in a meaningful way. I won't say that he couldn't have done more for her - all of the men on that ship failed her in some regard - but Swansea intentionally keeps the axe out of Jimmy's hands. He keeps the pod a secret, probably to give to Daisuke, but we can't say anything for sure. I joke that Swansea should have killed Jimmy from the start, but if we're being real that would have been an insane thing to do given what the characters know. But Swansea isn't the point of this post. Like. Idk I just think it's really bizarre that when people discuss Anya's assault, they still do it from the perspective of the men involved. It's weird and I don't like it. Like people have said before me: it's not enough to hate abusers, you have to love victims.

-she looked up to Curly and Jimmy for a while, seeing them both a good pilots and Curly as a good leader. She was starting to notice Jimmy’s incompetence, but attributed it to accidents or the ship being old.

- she learned a little before the crash about what Jimmy did to Anya, and there begins to be a rift between her and the men quickly, as she realizes that Curly is trying to sweep it under the rug.

- after the crash, Lucia locks herself in the cockpit. She’ll open the door when Anya asks, but is too scared of Jimmy to answer to any of the men on board. For most of the game if Jimmy talks to her, she’ll respond through the locked door, but if he needs something from there (the scanner) he needs Anya to get it.

-the door can be forced open, but Lucia claims to have the ship’s gun with her, and threatens to shoot a hole in the hull if they break in.

-as time goes on she won’t even open the door for Anya, and slowly responds less and less to Jimmy’s questions

- a lot of Mouthwashing characters have some sort of character flaw that ends up being their downfall, so I think Lucia’s would be her fear and stubbornness. She’s so afraid of Jimmy that she slowly starves in the cockpit, and when Jimmy finally forces the door open during the Swansea chase, he has to fight against the weight of her body on the door.

Ok. I'm totally fine with people liking Jimmy, he's a well written character with a complex array of issues and instincts which drive him forward as well as mysterious background for what really drove him to be in that crew. Most Jimmy enjoyers I meet are actually pretty chill for the most part. Do I like him?

Well...

Not exactly. I do believe in creative choice. People can write whatever they want, even if a lot of it I find disturbing. Jimmy's character made me actually feel upset at multiple points in the game, but thays a sign of just how humanly fucked up he's depicted. He's so human and does messed up but very human things, which makes it all feel real on an unsettling level.

The people I generally do not interact with are the people who FETISHIZE Jimmy's assault of Anya and say stuff like "She probably liked it ngl" like actually that is super gross and I really wasn't planning on bringing it up here, but years ago I myself was taken advantage of by another woman so for my case yes I cannot fathom the type of stuff people say or write with Jimmy. If someone is attracted to Jimmy, stop telling them to see a therapist (I mean, I think we all should after having played this game good lord the game messed with my psyche) while I dont agree with it and I don't understand how people can be attracted to him, it's also not my brain. Ok! So. Again, my thoughts and theories about "Mouthwashing" game yeah yeah.

Anya didn't want to drink mouthwash because of Jim.

At first I thought: "Hm. She probably doesn't want to drink that shi because it contains a lot of chemicals. And absorbing those can lead to very unpleasant side effects. Like feeling sick, getting food poisoning, terrible headaches and etc. Anya knows it, she is a nurse after all."

But then I was like: "Wait a minute... It contains alcohol as well. Swansea was having the time of his life (happy dancing old man), Daisuke was... Not. Well yeah, they were kinda drunk and had two different reactions. Swansea's body is already used to the alcohol while Daisuke's isn't. But Anya..."

Anya was afraid that she'll get unresponsive after getting drunk/poisoned from the mouthwash and Jim could easily took advantage of her. She just wouldn't be able to fight back. I feel sick typing it.

Now I think she could be worried about the baby as well (drinking alcohol while being pregnant is terrible idea, y'know?)

Though, it could be both. So yeah, just wanted to share my thoughts on this.

some rambles on my takes on Curly from Mouthwashing

I understand that a lot of people see Curly’s reaction to Anya telling him about her SA and what he did after as him ignoring it for Jimmy’s sake- and maybe that’s true, the point could very well be that people (especially those close to the abuser, especially men) will just set that kind of thing aside because the abuser “wouldn’t do that” or “will be better” or whatever, especially because Swansea ends up doing the same thing when Anya tells him, as well as the consistent theming of responsibility and trying to fix things.

But I think that maybe there’s more to it? If you don’t, feel free to look away, this is just my thoughts and take. But I think If the story is about SA and the consequences of not rooting the people out, I don’t understand what Diasuke’s role in it could be, so that just isn’t the moral of the story that I see. Of course, if this is how you see the story, that’s ok! People can have different views on media, and art is as much about people’s different responses to it as it is about what the creators meant.

Onto my little ramblings about the guy!

1- I think it’s very probable that Curly’s been manipulated by Jimmy, and for a long time. They’re “best friends,” and Curly believes Jimmy “won’t try that bullshit with me” even though he clearly does. Even at the birthday party, Jimmy is uncaring to his “best friend,” and during the confrontation near the cockpit, Jimmy outright twists what Curly’s said in the past. (Not to mention what he does to Curly afterward, but that doesn’t exactly count since it’s afterward.) I also wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy helped Curly out of some situation in the past due to his savior complex and Curly now feels like he owes Jimmy something. It’d be easy for him to overlook Jimmy’s smaller problems if he feels he owes Jimmy something, especially if it’s something bigger, and he seems more of the “deal with it” kind of person anyways, so he’d obviously toss any grievances aside since he thinks everyone needs multiple chances. At first, Jimmy probably unsettled him. But he got used to it, just like his job. He deals with it for the last day, then another, then another.

2- Curly seems legitimately concerned when Anya tells him about everything, at least when he gets confirmation. We don’t see much after the she asks him about the locks on the doors, and we don’t see how much he actually learns, and thus no clue as to how bad he believes the situation may be (Harassment is nothing to scoff at, but if he just believes someone’s being a creep or annoying her, he’s obviously going to try to learn more and deescalate before anything else.) We also never see how much or what they say when she asks for the gun, but what we know is that Curly is freaking out when he thinks she has it, and actually believes it at first to be that she wants to kill herself due to the recent termination of their jobs. He’s first confused, then after her few words of explanation says he’ll talk to Jimmy. We never see an actual talk, but he learns definitively of what happened only “1 day before the crash,” and it takes time to sort through emotions, plans, and decisions, let alone when someone you thought was good did something like that and if you realize that they were a shitty person all along. Curly also then needs to decide what they’re going to do with Jimmy (they can’t lock him in the cockpit or medical because they need those, nor the hold because he would obviously mess up whatever they’re shipping as a hissy fit against them, and considering you get pay docked for complaining, using the cryopod or the gun would probably make this whole deal worthless for practically everyone.) Even if he did decide to just get rid of Jimmy, he’s not going to tell anyone that in case Jimmy finds out, and especially not Anya, since she seems forgiving enough and in a bad enough spot he has no clue what she may try to do if he tells her “I’m going to go kill Jimmy.”

3- Inaction and not taking responsibility doesn’t feel like Curly’s issue. Curly has the responsibility of everything on the ship, even baking a cake, and even when told not to tell his crew about the loss of their jobs, he still does. He even takes roles that aren’t his, like doing Jimmy’s psych evaluation when he sees Anya’s uncomfortable. This is why he and Jimmy are the two characters we play as, and are seen as opposites and each other’s foils. Jimmy’s whole thing is unreliable narration. By the end of the game, he’s convinced himself Curly crashed the ship and he’s the better man for leaving Curly alive after what he “did.” Jimmy’s an aggressive man who uses people for just what they can give him, and he causes problems for the express purpose of trying to fix him so people worship him, but messes up even with all the time in the world to “fix” things. Curly’s the one blamed, but he’s a genuine guy who tried his best and gave people the benefit of the doubt until he couldn’t anymore, but didn’t have the time to fix anything because Jimmy broke that chance.

4- My main bit is over, but another piece of his psychology- Curly probably hates himself, considering how Jimmy talks about him seeming like he’s at the edge of a bridge with cinderblocks on his feet, and if he hates himself, a way he may try to cope is by insisting everyone isn’t tied to their worst moments! Just like how he talks about how pain is a symbol one’s alive, which sounds like another coping mechanism. Jimmy isn’t the only one who hopes it hurts.

5- And Curly was right, most of the time, about how bad things don’t define people. Swansea’s rude and abrasive at times, but a pretty good man in a bad life. Diasuke was unplanned for the journey, but he’s a good intern who’s trying his best. Anya may have only completed the Pony Express medical course, but she keeps Curly alive for four months, even despite his quadruple amputations and missing skin and the complete lack of a lot of medical equipment that she could’ve used. The unfortunate thing is- his kind nature let bad things in, and it was so slow and manipulative he didn’t even necessarily know, consciously, how bad it was, until Jimmy crashed the ship, got everyone killed, and fed him his own leg. 99.9% indeed.

Mouthwashing fanfiction i started but never finished so eat up!

She wanted to say that Jimmy was no man.

Biologically he was a human, with a heart and lungs and brain that Anya could try to treat, but his behavior was more attuned to that of a folktale monster. From stories told by people long gone by, meant to warn about the dangers of the world through the fear of an unknown creature. Of story's that, now in the modern day and age, you would brush off as fiction to not entertain the thought that maybe there were hints of truths hidden in those stories.

But the truth is that there are no monsters on board the Pony Express, only other humans.

Jimmy was conscious and meticulous with all of his actions, like it was a chore for him. He knew what he was going into her dorm for, he knew how he was going to do it and now he was going to kill her.

Well she doesn't exactly know entirely, but having spent enough time in “proximity” with Jimmy was enough to know that he would fight tooth and nail to end her life if he ever found out about the… fetus growing inside of her.

She needed to tell someone. She didn't have much time, the gap of opportunity was closing and she needed strength to pass through it but she was just so tired of everything. How much she would love to finish the job before Jimmy decided to come back for the finishing move.

“-Anya? Are you feeling ok? You've been staring at your corporate issued slop for a bit too long” Curly tries to joke. She slowly looks around the table to see everyone looking at her with varying degrees of concern. Looking down at her spoon she looks at the sad looking soup she was in the middle of eating, maybe it was edible at some point, but that's no longer the truth. She instinctively blows on the spoonful and sips at it.

It's gone cold.

“I can heat it up, if you need it warmer?” Oh, she had said that outloud.

“No thank you, I'm ok,” She didn’t want to burden him with anything. The thick air around the table dissipates, allowing the group to get back to joking and chatting. Her lying had worked.

Almost, for a split second, she locked eyes with someone she never wants to see ever again. She suppresses a shiver, at the feeling of cold eyes looking her up, being able to undress her with his eyes. Her clothes were meant to protect her, yet she was still stripped of everything she brought on this god-forsaken ship.

Anya the last one at the table, she never finished the soup.

Walking through the door leading to the medical ward she was stopped by Swansea's outstretched arm.

“What do you need Swansea,” He sighed, smoothing out his remaining hair.

“Are you sure you're ok Anya? You look like you've got a lot going on in your head, if you need help of any kind you can come to me,” Anya looked down to the left, fiddling with her cuticles.

“If I needed any help I would ask Captain-“ She was interrupted by a snort from the man in front of her, her face slacked in shock. She felt a little twinge of something inside of her. What was so funny?

He at least had the decency to look guilty about his inappropriate action, averting his gaze and clearing his throat “Look, Anya. I've been working with Captain Curly longer than you and I know more than anyone on here that he is working his ass off trying to make sure everything is running right and being taken care of. But that sure doesn't leave a lot of room for the emotional part of everything. He is a good man and a good leader, that doesn't make him a good therapist though,” He seems to be trying to gesture something with his hand but she stops him.

“ I-I think I ge- I understand what your trying to say... but uhm, really I don't know if...I don't know if I'm strong enough to say what I need to say”

“You don't have to explain anything, just tell me what needs to happen for you to feel better,”

“I think… jimmy, he whats… wants to hurt me, can you, maybe hide the, uh, emergency weapons so that he can't get it?”

Something flashed in his eyes before it was masked again, he crossed his arms with a frown “My body may be getting rusty but there's one thing that ain't, my gut. I felt something was off about that creep."

He scratches his chin"Good to know that it wasn’t just me thinking he was weird. The way he looks at Captain Curly makes me want to hurl-y,” She smiles at that.

“There’s that sickly sweet smile, of course i'll put those somewhere where he can’t see ,” he paused frowning “But just some advice,” He motioned for her to come closer to him.

“ I don’t think you should tell Captain about Jimmy,” Anya's heart jumps into her throat, she chokes on it, coughing. Swansea slaps at her back gentler than she thought he would have.

“ Why?” 

He looks up and sighs. “ I'm an old fart who's been working on this rusty box of bolts for decades. I was here when curly first became the Captain of this ship. Back then he was a disgustingly fine young gentleman who really showed how much sweat and tears he put into getting on this damn ship.” That just sounded like the regular Capitan Curly she knew, what was the difference between then and now?

“Well then came Jimmy,” oh.

“Yeah, he was the biggest little shit I've come across in any colony. Manipulative and smug beyond all hell, but he was even worse when next to Curly. Those two bring out the worst of each other, more than any other person I've ever seen. Curly’s more naive and gullible while Jimmy is insecure brat who thinks anyone better than him has had life handed to them that way . I've never told anyone else this but I truly think that the day Jimmy was assigned co-pilot was the day that Curly stopped being this ship's true capitan,” Anyas furrowed her brows, frown etched deep into her face. Swansea noticed and chuckled bitterly.

“I know that sounds strange, but Jimmy is the Captain's best friend and he takes advantage of that all the time. Notice how Jimmy rarely ever gets into trouble?” Her eyes widened. 

“Yeah, Curly’s biased towards Jimmy, that bastard has our captain eating out of the palm of his hand.”

“ Poor Curly, I couldn’t imagine being groomed that way,” Swansea raises an eyebrow at that.

“I don’t think he was necessarily groomed, even though I called him naive I wouldn’t call him blameless. He's a grown ass man and he's shown that he's not gullible or immature enough to be able to fall for a person's bullshit so quickly,” She almost wanted to frown but tried to hide it.

“He’s responsible for everyone on this ship, so whatever happens under his control he's partially responsible for,” She shudders at the thought, swallowing the lump in her throat. Anya doesn’t want to think that such a nice man would just allow this to happen without repercussions. She didn’t know what was worse, seeing exactly who she knew Jimmy was or finding out she never truly knew Curly at all.

Was it so stupid to believe that she wanted to be close to the people whom she was going to spend a ship with for a year?

A pat on the shoulder made her flinch, Swansea raised an eyebrow at the action. She stared at him, begging him not to dig any further. He surrendered and walked away.

“ Just try to get some rest, tonight,” He waved back at her from where he was walking away.

She nodded - oh wait he wouldn't see that. Anya called out to him "Alright, I'll try to do that,”

That night she cuddles into her new bedsheets, cuddling closer to her old rabbit stuffed animal that she brought with her savoring the smell of her home that still lingered on it.

She didn’t dream of anything. 

It felt like she had blinked at night then woke up in the morning to buzzing fluorescent lights of the cabin. Even though she wasn’t in the medbay she still felt like she was under the harsh medical lights.

She gets up and goes to breakfast,and stays quiet even as the conversation shifts to the routines and what Daisuke and Swansea are learning about for the day.

On her way to medway she almost tells curly about her problem but instead tell him about Jimmy's hidden nature and about the rose tinted glasses.

As she walks into the sterile smelling medical room she sighs, sits down and stares at a wall of screens showing a sunrise.

They say a Captain is his ship.

How many pretty screens need to be ripped away before she can find the truth written inside?

ok im not tagging this because i do not want to discourse with anyone i just have a lot of thoughts i wanted to get off my chest about MOUTHWASHING! and how people treat the characters, in this case anya. wrote it up on discord earlier but i wanted to actually archive it. if u see no issues with what im about to describe its like whatever, i dont think u are stupid or bad at media or anything, this is MY viewpoint. spoilers for the game + mentions of rape/suicide

so i saw a drawing on tumblr today of anya with a halo of the sunset screen, with curly, daisuke, and swansea all leaning against her, and holding the horse fetus. and it was captioned "mary of tulpar". and it just really really bothered me. and i think the reasons it bothered me are the same reason basically all the art i've seen of her has bothered me. i'm going to try and be very careful with how i word this because i do not want it to be misconstrued. i just think that the fans have done this thing where they do not know how to approach her identity as a victim and so they figuratively (or literally in this drawing) make her into the virgin mary. where she is a symbol, and a symbol that has been hurt and tainted, but not a person who has a right to feel any way about it. just a symbol that the other (male) characters can lean on (LITEARLLY IN THIS CASE) for strength. there is this seeming consensus that in some way her rape has elevated her (?) and made her into this saint-figure. i do not think this is done intentionally but it is done consistently. it just makes me feel really weird because truly we are turning her into a martyr which does not seem to me like a responsible way of handling the character. like you are defining her entire character on her victimhood. which the game already plays into (one of my issues with it) but the thing is, fanwork inherently lets you give a NEW lens to a story. and yet i swear the fans are OBSESSED with her suffering even moreso than the narrative itself is. like to them she is her suffering. and its a horror game. like obviously that's the point. and obviously in the game she has a 'bad ending'. but i'm sorry i honestly feel like her 'bad ending' is a BETTER angle to focus on for her character. again going to word this carefully but the thing is about anya's suicide is that she does win against jimmy. liike you obviously don't want to say that about someone killing themselves but within the context of this story her death was a victory & took the power out of his hands.

mouthwashing 2nd pt thoughts...

ok so i liked the last third of the game a lot more this time i think i was getting kind of Tilted the first pt by some of the mechanics (the graveyard esp was giving me a lot of grief lol) but i had an easier time this go. tho i do still think it feels a little like padding, the graveyard and the snakehorse sequence couldve been a bit just shorter and less annoying to get through, and the vent baby part is just nothing to me. puzzles like curlys valves feel a lot more appropriate to the tone and tension of the game and i wish we'd had a few of those instead..

anywayyyyy thats kind of a minor quibble. my real main Issue with the game is i hate how anya is like entirely absent from the labyrinth sequence. i guess you could argue that its cause jimmys perspective and he doesnt care about or acknowledge her as a person but how much of a fuck does he rly give about swansea and daisuke either and they featured pretty prominently. but anya doesnt even get to....appear, unless you count the big disembodied womb or jimmys manifestation of his unborn child as polle. which is really just, erasing her further by making her just incidental to Jimmy's Problem, collateral damage not even worth mentioning. it really just bugs me given how central she is to the game and its themes. i feel like a callback to the 'window' screen and the dead pixel wouldve worked rly well..............

otherwise all the rest of the game is truly 10/10 no notes. noticed a detail i missed the first time around, which is that in the labyrinth the polle posters change slightly to show rise and shine polle sloshed off the mouthwash, accident polle with the axe, lend a hand polle with blood on its hands.. tho there wasnt one with the delivery polle (my friend says cause they never made the delivery!)

happy holidays! ty for asking about my mouthwashing au shenanigans :)

yeah swansea n paloma have got 2 kids: ainara (daughter/oldest/currently an adult living on her own) and ingram (biologically born male but later identifies as non-binary/youngest/currently off at university). ainara is a spanish name and means "swallow (bird)." ingram is a scandinavian name and means "raven of peace." yep i'm sticking with the bird theme in this family. haven't really planned the kids out too much yet tho. here's what i got so far (just text, no drawing sorry):

ainara is very much like her dad in both looks and personality so she and swansea tend to butt heads a lot. they got into a big argument a few years ago (mainly about swansea's alcoholism but there were other things too) that left them on non-speaking terms for a while, but things have slowly been getting better. swansea has been trying his best to be better in general—hence the sobriety. he won't outright admit it, but a lot of his drive to be sober is because he wants to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. he and ainara do both love each other. they're just both stubborn-ass bitches (affectionate). and sometimes daily life blurs together so much that one day you wake up and realize it's been 10 whole years already. and you wonder how you let so much time slip through your fingers.

ingram takes more after their mom in appearance. their personality is more on the chill side—the water to ainara's fire. easygoing but not to the point of being a doormat. they came out as non-binary in high school, which was accepted with no problem at all by their sister and parents. i see mouthwashing taking place a few decades in our future so i'd like to think the majority of society is more aware and accepting of these things by then (please for the love of god). swansea's response to ingram coming out was literally, "about fuckin' time." ingram gets along with their dad better than their sister does with their general chill and patient vibes. ingram and paloma tend to be the peacekeepers/mediators between the 2 firestarters. you could say that ingram was made to mature too fast because of this.

ok i'm making this family sound really dysfunctional, which they are a bit, but in the end they love each other. it wasn't all conflict—they have plenty of happy memories with each other too. there are just things they're working out.

the story is amazing. im. i got so attached to the characters and then they died and it was like oh my god. like the game fucked with my mood so much but oh my god it was so good. it was made so well. i did not expect to be affected by it so much (i thought it would just be a typical ooooo scarrryyy horror game oooo) but no that shit was DEEp.

and that bittersweet ending too? everyone dead? it really makes everything feel desolate and like. empty. like theres nothing more you can do now. thats it. wow. wow wow wow. this was AMAZING.

Yk what actually I'm gonna actually post thought-out Diasuke hate to prove a point here. Daisuke is also not this perfect little guy that everyone characterizes him as. He goes along with some of the casually sexist things Jimmy says during their optional conversations. He agrees to drug Swansea, which in itself is a very blunt implication that Jimmy has drugged people's drinks before. (Obviously Jimmy bullied him into it, but abusers do that with a lot of people that are labeled "enablers" so like. Daisuke isn't at fault there but it calls into question what he might have done in other scenarios, where the violence is aimed at more vulnerable people. But that's not something we will ever know.) And most of all Daisuke DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THAT ANYA IS GOING TO KILL HERSELF. His biggest flaw is that he's completely emotionally oblivious and is not someone Anya would ever feel comfortable confiding in. And that's not an endearing trait. And just cause I know someone is gonna take me in bad faith idrc if you hc him as like neurodivergent or whatever like coming from an autistic person who really struggles with empathy, it's not fun, and it's not quirky, it just causes issues. Sympathy and self-awareness is definitely something that can be worked on regardless of your capacity for empathy. (To varying degrees of success obviously. I'm not judging people who genuinely can not sympathize with others. But also, Daisuke probably isn't even intended to be autistic. At this point we're kind of just projecting and lying about canon, aren't we? Not to say it couldn't be an interesting angle for analysis but again. It's not actually part of the text.) EVERY crewmember contributes to the systemic misogyny on that ship. If Curly intentionally ignores it, Daisuke hasn't even come to the conclusion that it exists yet. He is also part of the problem.

But none of that makes Daisuke a uniquely bad person! Obviously! Imo it doesn't even make him a bad person at all! He inadvertently contributes to the system that fucked them all over. And? All of the characters in this game are nuanced and morally grey and that's kind of the point!!! (Except Jimmy lol. Nuanced yes but there's a very clear villain there.) Like pointing out a character's flaws and concluding they're bad is not the intelligent take fandoms tend to think it is. Ok, you've identified a character flaw. Now what does it mean. What does it contribute to what the game is trying to say? And I think this is the root of what's so frustrating about people debating whether Curly or Swansea is actually Good or Bad. I really, truly don't think we're here to make moral judgements about individuals. We're here to examine the systemic issues that allowed the story to take place at all. And obviously, every character lives in a god damn society and has had those bad traits rub off on them! Like. Can we move past this base level of moral analysis already? Please. Please.

All the odd numbers for Colin Hughes

*rubs hands* ok ok ok let’s do this!

1) Something this character is truly proud of.

Just making it out of Swansea onto the Cardiff football team (and later, Richmond). Colin grew up as an unacademic teenager in the shadow of his high-achieving big brother in a pretty poor part of Wales and so he’s so pleased that he’s made something impressive out of himself and can provide for his family – overcompensating with the brash attitude and the flash car and everything being just a little bit Loud, just so he can show he’s arrived.

Later on, his priorities change. He’d probably now say the progress he made with Doctor Sharon, or repairing his friendship with Nate and Sam after being such a dick in the early days. (I don’t think Sam ever held a grudge per say – but after Jamie left, Colin and Isaac apologised to Sam for going along with Jamie’s bullying quite so much, which Sam really appreciated.)

3) Who depends on them.

His mum, given how much Colin wants to support her since making it to the Premier League. Also everyone thinks Isaac is the caregiver and protector in Colin and Isaac’s friendship, but as we saw in Rainbow, Isaac can get in his own head a bit too much – a lot of Colin’s levity and larking about is deliberately done to distract Isaac, and Isaac really appreciates it.

5) A cherished personal belonging.

A Welsh rugby jersey signed by every member of the 2019 Welsh team. Personally Colin prefers football – but as a Welshman, rugby is fucking sacred. (Even if every time he tries to play he gets flattened by his cousins.)

Also, of course, the Lamborghini. He talks to it a concerning amount, and only Isaac is allowed to sit on the bonnet. Anyone else gets a stern talking to if they so much as touch it.

7) This character’s favorite character.

Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. Considering Colin could be said to bear a passing resemblance to Pippin Took – lively, humorous, a little bit daft – maybe that’s no surprise? Also everyone from the Night Watch series in Discworld.

9) What calms them when they are upset.

Cuddles. Colin gets more physically affectionate the more anxious he gets, so the team learns that whenever he starts to get upset that one of them has to go on hugging duty until he’s settled. Dani volunteers quite a lot; Isaac does it without even needing to be asked.

11) This character’s favorite piece or pieces of clothing.

Have you seen his collection of polo shirts? (Actually, Colin will genuinely make an effort when he’s trying to impress someone or it’s a special occasion – not a pair of trainers or a polo shirt in sight – and so his favourite item of clothing is actually a really nice suit that he never wears because it’s Special.)

13) What kind of parent they would be.

I headcanon that Colin’s dad is a very emotionally distant father – not abusive like James Tartt Sr or Mr Shelley, but someone who came from a very deprived area of Wales and thus is focussed on academia and achievement and being respectable - and so doesn’t think much of Colin’s lifestyle or try very much to bond with him emotionally. So I think Colin would try very much to make up for it by really making an effort to chat with his kids and make sure they feel safe to talk to him no matter what. Very physically affectionate and into bad jokes and dorky dad dancing. His kids have installed a lifetime ban on him driving them to school after that one time he leant out the window and yelled ‘I LOVE YOU, DON’T FORGET ME’ in front of all their friends.

I’ve said time and again that Colin, Dani, Isaac, Jamie and Sam sing ‘I Want It That Way’ by the Backstreet Boys on karaoke nights, and quite frankly if season 3 doesn’t give us that we’ll be robbed.

…not to play too much into national stereotypes, but canonically as a Welshman Colin has a good singing voice. I don’t make the rules. He’d either refuse to sing on his own in front of the team or deliberately act up more goofy to avoid the scrutiny, but a few of his close friends on the team have probably heard him sing old Welsh hymns from his childhood once or twice while doing the dishes.

Playing with his sisters and cousins on the beach in Tenby during the school holidays and going for ice cream afterwards.

Shots of various kinds, probably the more expensive, the better. Though, again, that’s more of a status thing than particular preference: he’d honestly be happy with a cheap beer or cider.

25) What other people wish they could change about them

A lot of his friends wish Colin could learn to be a bit less deflective with humour during serious moments: sometimes he’ll avoid a difficult conversation by making a joke, or else push a joke just a little too far without thinking about how it’ll land with the other person. (*cough*Nate*cough*) He genuinely doesn’t mean it, and would probably be horrified if he knew he was hurting anyone else, but sometimes he can be a little bit careless with people’s feelings.

Hi Minnie!! Hope you are well!! I’m pretty New to this blog so this probably isn’t one of your usual asks but I’m just wondering you’ve mentioned living in London, as a Brit, I’m curious to know:

If you ever came back to the UK, would you consider visiting/staying in other cities? And is there anything in particular you miss about being in London?

Hi honey! Thanks for your message, and a (belated) welcome to this blog!! 😘 You’re so kind, thank you 🥺 I really appreciate you telling me you enjoy my blog and my replies, that means a lot <3 And don’t worry at all, it’s nice to get a slightly different ask from time to time! 

Those are good questions, hmmm. I’ve travelled quite a bit within the UK, although there are still lots of places I’d love to visit! I’ve never been to the Lake District or Cornwall, so those are definitely on the list for when I go back for like, a vacation or something. I’ve always been slightly obsessed with Oxford, which I know isn’t a very representative English city and also not really a place many people actually live outside of university life, but it does hold a very special place in my heart and I can’t wait to be able to back and spend some time in the Ashmolean again <3 I’ve also lived in Wales for a while (both Swansea and Cardiff), but while I had a great time there, I don’t think I’d necessarily go to live there again. I have considered Liverpool and Manchester, and I’m also kind of crazy about York, so if I ever have the chance again, I’d definitely consider moving there! 

As for what I miss about being in London - my friends, most of all, but apart from that... I moved away early last year, back to the Netherlands where I’m from, and the things I miss most about London are really all things that I wouldn’t really have been able to do due to COVID anyway, this past year. I really, really miss my Sunday walks & talks with my friends where we’d stroll over the Heath and then have a pint (or two or three) in Hampstead or Highgate, and I miss my favourite coffee places and restaurants and going to the theater, and I miss visiting museums and art galleries (I’ve got a background in art history and curating and gahh, in that regard London really is a treasure trove..!) I do not, however, miss having to take the tube every day, or having to walk around with pepper spray lol, and I’m also glad to have left the competitiveness of the commercial art world there behind.
