even if, for the sake of argument, some people DO "deserve" to suffer, it's just not something you can make into a political policy.

1) as vaspider pointed out, it doesn't actually make things any better, and i'd much prefer making things better to getting that sort of "justice,"

and 2) you are assuming that YOU will be the one to decide who "deserves" it. "bad people deserve suffering" is literally the current policy, you just disagree with those in power about what makes someone a "bad person." this ideology affecting marginalized groups isn't even a slippery slope, we are already at the bottom of the damn hill. the only way this will work out the way you want it to is if you, personally, are dictator of earth, and no one else ever disagrees with you on who "deserves" suffering. not really an ideal situation, if you ask me.

also it makes me sad that so many supposed leftists think the answer to ‘there is an imbalance in who suffers and who doesn’t" is “redistribute the suffering to the people I don’t like”, not “try to make it so no one has to suffer”

wait can I just complain for a second bc this is kind of pissing me off a little but the only available editions you can find online of jj grandville's les metamorphoses du jour (1829) are 1850s and 1860s editions, which afaict are Not the original lithographs but rather engraving reproductions of them (which is touched on briefly here). which I had assumed just meant it would be a slightly different quality or have other slight differences, which would only be mildly frustrating to me except for the fact that I've been comparing the versions in this 1854 edition of the book on gallica with what (as far as I know) are original lithograph prints here in the british museum collections because some of the ones in the gallica edition were striking me as like Noticably not 1820s-30s in vibe and. they seem to have been straight up 'modernizing' the clothing in these 1850s reproductions??

Something I really like is that April’s constant stream of odd jobs she goes through is somewhat reflected in the boys as well. Like, you have April working at random pizza places or getting a crane license or being fully willing to apply for a job at a place clearly made out of cardboard. Then you have the boys as well who do anything from working as a basketball mascot, building a massive dog park, being waiters, getting a whole band gig at a theme park, etc, etc-

Main difference is that April actively applies for these jobs (and is hopefully paid for the short time she’s in them) whereas for the bros the jobs usually find them (and they practically never get paid.) It doesn’t even stop at jobs either, they just seem to casually amass skills in general.

I don’t know, I like how both April and the turtles are just so ready and willing to do things. Sure, they’re not always good at these things, but they do them readily! In a way, being heroes is just another job (well, more like volunteer work/vigilantism/another fun activity) that they initially took on because of their general sense of “why not?”

They’re very willing and open to trying out new things despite their tendency to revert back to what they enjoy (and how commonly trying new things ends up going wrong), and I think that adaptational interest of theirs really helps them be well rounded in multiple regards.

Your f/o will be happy to keep your safe foods in the house, and won’t raise a judgemental eyebrow if you’re selective with ordering food (asking for things to be removed or modified for example) If you want to introduce new things to your diet they will support you but they won't make you feel like you 'failed' if it doesn't work out. Yes, even the ones who are more daring or colourful in their food choices.

They will be perfectly loving towards you as you are, they don’t want you to be different or change to a standard of ‘normalcy.’ They won't mock or shame you or pressure you into eating things that make you gag or feel sick, and will be happy to accommodate your needs because they love you as you are.

They want you to feel safe when eating with them! Food should not be a chore. When you enjoy your comfort foods it makes them smile :)

On The Joys of Hunting

I see a lot of alterhumans talk about the horrors of having a prey drive, the inconvenience of it, or how violent/ugly it is.

For understandable reasons, the impulse to kill is not the most palatable thing in the world. Especially in a society that is for the most part no longer interested in, or familiar with, the idea of hunting for food.

For some of us alterhumans, hunting is more than just a way to get food. It's a way to feel like ourselves, by doing what we're meant to. What comes naturally to us.

I say all of this to provide groundwork for an observation I've made about a practice of mine.

I engage in a kind of faux-hunting. I stalk prey animals, without actually killing them. It's a slow, methodical, and quiet thing. The process is mostly waiting and watching.

I'm sure from the outside it looks incredibly boring.

But from the inside, it's enrapturing. Every twitch, every slight movement they make is a tiny jolt of electricity in my nerves. It's one of the only times I get to fully let myself be a monster. Something primal and instictive and finely tuned in to my surroundings.

At the same time, it's deeply relaxing.

I suffer from a long term anxiety disorder that I rarely talk about here. Between that and my innate personality, my mind is a cluttered place most of the time.

When I'm shifted, all of that goes away.

And when I'm hunting, there's a kind of singular clarity that a shift might otherwise lack. It's a little like being a force of nature. Act and react. Cause and effect.

You move, I move.

This isn't the only positive experience I've had with my prey drive, but it's the one I wanted to talk about first.
