Better Bones: CW List

Better Bones is not a project that aims to fix canon by making the Clans wholesome and unproblematic. Though there can be fun and kindness in it and my philosophy is an optimistic one, It's not an escapist fantasy. It is a story about semi-realistic cats of human intelligence in a violent, war-obsessed theocratic dictatorship, and how they attempt to change it over the years.

Clan Culture is flawed, that is on purpose. Addressing and changing this is what the story is about.

Please refer back to my main post, where it is explicitly stated that my goal is to "Address (Canon's) Problematic Elements." Not remove.

Better Bones contains themes and/or depictions of the following;

Physical and emotional abuse; Domestic, authoritative, and familial

Child abuse and inter-generational trauma

Kidnapping and indoctrination of children

Somewhat graphic medical discussion, such as abortion, wound infection, and the use of leeches and maggots

The killing and processing of small animals into food, including tanning and butchery

Semi-realistic cat behaviors, specifically marking things with urine

Ableism; both externalized and internalized. Sometimes this leads to death by violence or medical neglect, other times characters simply grapple with mistreatment.

Xenophobia; to a violent degree, including stochastic terrorism, hate crime, and discrimination

^^^ read that one again. Consider that on this list twice.

Politics; Authoritarianism, fascism, and liberalism as an enemy, discussion of dog whistles and ideology

"Redemption arcs" of certain people who did bad things

Cosmic horror and supernatural curses

Graphic violence, including against innocent bystanders, through assault, poisoning, drowning, falling, being eaten alive by large fish and demigods, and occasionally attacking bulldozers

Animal abuse; Human beings harming cats on purpose and Clan cats generally being terrified of people

Clan cats, both villainous and culturally mislead, glorifying these things in-universe, not immediately staring at the camera and breaking character to tell you "This Is A Bad Thing!"

Keep in mind that you will encounter these topics while browsing this project. I would at minimum rate this project as PG-13, but PG-16 would be a more accurate bet.

I have sympathy for you if these are not topics you can handle. My project tackles very upsetting real-world issues and not everyone is looking for something challenging; that's understandable and there's no fault in that. I try to tag appropriately, and would never drop anything VERY gruesome without a warning, but I can't promise to catch everything. Please keep yourself safe.

There are other, softer projects out there run by cool people if this is not for you, and you can add #Better Bones AU to your tag filters and this project will not show up! But, I'm not responsible for your comfort with my art.

If you followed me under the assumption that BB is "Warriors without any ableism/xenophobia/violence" you were mistaken. I missed the closeness of the scoobies so bad I didn't even realize until we hit episode three and I was aching for it. oh, god. and the spuffy of it all! I can't even get into it right here but ohhhh. oh. and DAWNIE my sweet girl oh sweet niblet I love her so much. anya's episode? probably one of my favourite episodes of the entire show tyvm. I really liked kennedy and honestly I think she made a great second in command for buffy when she actually listened, though I think she'd be a god-awful leader. almost all of the episodes held my attention that weren't, y'know, bewitched bothered bewildered part two electric boogaloo over there. and DRUSILLAAAAAA ik she wasn't real but IDC I was fawning every time she was on screen both as the first as actually her oh I just adore her I'll never understand her and I don't even care. taking it back actually getting into the spuffy of it all for a second because oh my GOD they had an actual conversation about themselves where she neither ran away nor punched him!! and the montage of everyone screwing, only to cut to spuffy simply cuddling? to show THAT'S their intimacy? 'bout fuckin killed me it did

them kicking buffy out of her house and then literally no one saying ANYTHING about how she was RIGHT except spike ofc really bothered me. and gosh the way they just kinda... did buffy's plan anyways. a little different, but not really? still invaded the vineyard when half the reason no one was listening to her was bc they didn't wanna go back that. but that was like the biggest issue I had the entire season honestly. there was no riley to make me furious, 15 minutes of angel that I hated every second of but is so small it's whatever, and robin wood kinda annoyed me once he turned on buffy and spike there but y'know he gets less relevant so pshh. I'll admit I also got a bit peeved at myself every time I smiled at something andrew said but he grew on me wayyy quicker than I was expecting or wanting I get why he shows up in fics so often now he's entertaining to watch

anyways. I'm sure there's like a billion million things I've missed in my endeavor to simply enjoy myself while watching but as it stands? I love this season. I love it to bits and pieces and I think it was incredibly fun. y'all might just be the biggest haters in the world cause I am SO glad I decided to actually give it a go

2. Pranks

(Kris does this all the time, Chara's only known prank is not doing their creepy face when the camera is on but Az's "quit tricking me" makes me think they do this a lot, and Asriel sure jokes about disturbing things but the only thing I'd call a prank is the "did you think this was over? ...I mean, we haven't even done the special thanks yet" which is in no way a canon interaction but I think it proves it's the kinda thing he'd do nonetheless)

3. A sick sense of humour

("If you laid here you might never get up", "completely indistinguishable from the dust of your friends", and some of Kris's pranks tend towards the morbid (especially the ketchup blood))

(the seems to is, of course, for Chara. They did get him a best friends forever locket but who knows if they actually meant it? The most concrete evidence we have for Chara's affection for Asriel is how personally they seem to take his "betrayal" and that's just depressing)

I know this is just like, a general thing and people don't necessarily mean anything by it, but I fucking hate the phrases "go outside", "touch grass", and "chronically online" as responses to bad takes.

it just sucks being someone who's unable to leave the house most of the time due to disability, and then having to hear people constantly equating being indoors a lot and spending a lot of time online with having shitty opinions or being a shitty person.

and once again I know it's not that deep but I can't help but wonder how people perceive housebound disabled people if they associate being inside all the time with being shitty. I feel really on edge when people use these phrases while talking to me because even if they're generally supportive, the association between "this person sucks" and "this person doesn't go outside enough" makes me feel like people secretly think I'm terrible and are judging me because I spend most of my time indoors even if it's for reasons that are out of my control.

(ironically enough I'm pretty sure saying that this bothers me is the exact kind of thing that would make some people call me "chronically online" or tell me to go touch grass or whatever)

- Ppl really overstate the degree to which post-rez wwx is just a silly goofy innocent twink like. here he is spouting off a yllz style torture fantasy in his head unprompted. BRO'S STILL GOT IT

- he hated xue yang SO much from the moment he heard about him lmfao!! the diff between his attitude on XY vs his attitude on any other antagonist he meets post-rez is always interesting to me. i mean the first thing wwx heard of him is "oh yeah people somewhat blame you for his evil acts bc he was using the techniques you developed also oh yeah he rebuilt your doomsday weapon that you thought you destroyed and no one had to worry about anymore". tbh i do think wwx felt somewhat responsible

- "this little punk is out here doing disproportionate retribution on people >:( what if I did disproportionate retribution on HIM" ok, not getting into debate on the jianghu's opinion on the morality of torture, or whether it can be considered proportionate to anything. from MY perspective it's rly funny

A character isn't morally grey if they never do anything wrong.

This, this, a million times this!

& like, the thing is, a person can do the wrong ting for the right reasons, or cos its the most pragmatic choice, or due to bias they need to address.

The point is there's tons of ways to make a character "Morally grey" or otherwise, complicated, or nuances without either not doing that at all and making said grey-ness an informed trait, or just having someone be an asshole on purpose.

The fact some shows and so much of fandom are basically allergic to a lot of very interesting characters, stories, or concepts because "They did X thing wrong, and are bad forever" plays into this. People want the aesthetic and vibe of a morally grey, nuanced, complicated or redemption based story but they don't want ay of the stuff that goes into making it.

Its like a tragedy enjoyer who demands a happy ending where everyone gets cake and its incredibly obnoxious.
