~ Batman: Knightfall
[Broken Bat: 5/6]
The part of Bruce that wants to join Jason in death (see Broken Bat: 3) has won. He has no energy, no determination to fight. He is accepting death.
The issue started with "Feel so bad, I want to die." and it ends with the same words, now even more true. Bruce wants to die. "And I'm done." He gives up.
But Bane? Bane decides that killing Batman isn't what he wants actually. He needs him alive and in pain, broken, forever.
#batman#bruce wayne#bane#knightfall#dc comics#my ramblings#bruce: kill me so I can finally see my son again#bruce: but also fuck you#I could make parallel between this issue and Jason's death like the beating the fight for determination under the pain#the final acceptance of death as the pnly outcome#but still telling your killer to fuck off

I fell in love with my own idea, so surprise! More baby time! >:3
Thinking about my Littlest Wayne au where each of your family members play games with you in different ways:
Dick is 1000000000% IN when you wanna play School or have Tea Parties or play Doctor. He is your student. He is your fellow gossip queen. He is your patient. He's whatever you need him to be and he plays his roles flawlessly. Tell him all the drama while you shop at his grocery store and pretend to paint his nails five minutes later, after which he has a crisis because you diagnosed him with Terminal Cooties. He's fretting over who gets what in the will but also he's the gardener, so he's gotta make his own funeral bouquet when the illness finally takes its toll. How could you do this to him, doc?
Damian will do the practical things with you. He won't play Pretend but he will color with you ("I'm helping them develop fine motor control."), play with Lincoln Logs with you ("It's never too early to take an interest in architecture."), and do puzzles with you ("See, this is an Edge piece. You can tell because one side is flat and doesn't link to other pieces.").
Jason and Tim are down for whatever, but they mostly just supervise you if you decide to play with your toys alone. You go to them if you want some Parallel Playtime. They're nice and calming while still keeping you company.
Bruce routinely decides you've gotten a little too chatty with the fake, other person on the line and gently takes the toy phone from your hands whenever you have it out.
"They're two years old, you son of a bitch," he growls into the plastic receiver, using the Batman voice and everything. Dick wheezes, Damian shakes his head, Jay and Tim are smirking, and you're jumping up and down, making grabby hands for your toy back. "I don't know who you are, but if you ever call here again, I will find you and I will kill you."
(This is his Favorite Bit. You're sick of it.)
Alfred disguises your playtimes with him as just helping with chores. He gives you child-sized brooms and plastic cutting boards and a mini duster, and sends you on missions to battle all the dust bunnies in the nooks and crannies he can't reach, or just gives you easy kitchen tasks like mashing potatoes or licking cookie batter off of the spoon. You're his favorite little helper.

What are their go to conversation starters?
Alfred: Lesson #18 of behaving like a human being: initiating conversations.
Alfred: At a formal event, you are expected to engage with others in an appropriate manner. For this exercise, I want you to pretend I'm a guest and impress me.
Dick: Good evening, sir. I really appreciate you being here. If you need anything at all, don't hesitate to ask.
Dick: *smiles and gives Alfred a firm handshake*
Alfred: Excellent job, except one thing.
Alfred, holding up his arm: It was not necessary to take my watch. You're not a mission, Master Dick.
Dick: But what if I am?
Alfred: That's a lesson for another day. Next.
Jason: Now, hypothetically, if a very bad man killed your son, wouldn't YOU—
Alfred: That's enough. Next.
Tim: My name's Tim and I'm afraid of wasps because they have a photographic memory of all who wronged them.
Alfred: Dismissed. Next.
Damian: *walks away to play with the dog*
Alfred: We'll come back to him. Next.
Duke: Wanna beta-read my Luke Fox Final Fantasy MMA AU fanfic?
Cullen: Wanna beta-read my Destiel Superhell fix-it fanfic?
Alfred: Next.
Steph: Last night I dreamt I was a waffle, but I was also the plate and the fork and myself eating the me-waffle.
Alfred: That's disturbing, next.
Cass: *stares*
Alfred: You are supposed to say something.
Cass: Something.
Alfred, sighing: Next.
Barbara: Hi, I'm Barbara. You must be Alfred, right? How are you liking the party?
Alfred, acting: I'm enjoying it very much, thank you.
Barbara: Okay, so you didn't notice me remotely disabling an army of robot cockroaches. Phew!
Alfred: We were so close. Next.
Harper: Can you believe it? Some asshole disabled my robo-roaches.
Alfred: For the last time, Miss Harper, no robotic insects at galas. Next.
Carrie: Hello, sir. Can I get you anything?
Alfred, acting: A glass of water would be nice.
Carrie: Sure thing. One cup of locally sourced water, coming right up.
Alfred: Never mind. Next.
Kate: Your daughter is hot.
Alfred: Wrong answer. Next.
Helena: Tell me everything you know about the Maroni family or so help me—
Alfred: Different script, Miss Helena. Please turn to page 67 for gala conversations.
Luke: What does it mean when someone you know sends you their fanfiction about yourself?
Alfred, rubbing his temples: Next, please.
Bette: Head's up!
Bette: *spikes a volleyball*
Alfred, catching it: Next.
Selina: Wanna see pictures of my cats?
Bruce: Wanna see pictures of my kids?
Alfred:
Alfred: I think we should start again from the top.

Tw: Death, abuse
Villain Tim AU to Abusive!Bruce
Bruce hits, psychological tortures, and verbally/emotional abuses his kids. Tim, who's a villain, is fed up with this.
Tim twirls the revolver as he lazily peers at the man beneath his foot. He's bleeding, the head wound leaking into his eyes, and his breaths are coming out fast. The man is certainly not in a decent state and can't fight back.
"Recognize where we are, Batman?"
The man glowers at his son above him, his jaw clenched as he refuses to answer.
"No answer, B? Typical." The younger man rolls his eyes and presses his foot harder into Bruce's broken ribs. The father doesn't even grimace in pain. Tim's disappointed.
The gun finally stills in the younger man's hand, but his grip is loose. He uses that hand to gesture at their surroundings.
"It's the alley that created Batman and the place that caused an entire section of the city to fall into poverty. I wonder if Joe Chill realized he'd be damning entire city blocks by killing two people."
Tim shrugs as a coy smile suddenly appears.
"Say... this is also where you picked up Jason, right? The child you cared for, drove out to die, and then viscously beat when he returned?"
Tim grinds his foot into Bruce's torso as the smile drops from his face.
"I'm not a fan of those who hurt my siblings. I never retaliated against you in the past because it would've hurt them. No matter how much abuse you dealt out, they still loved you. Hell. I loved you too."
Tim's eyes drift down to the weapon he holds. Bruce's eyes follow and the grin Tim bears is cruel.
"Ah. You know this gun, right? For the two bullets it fired, you're intimate with its make, model, and the scratches on its handle. I bet you could recreate it perfectly from memory."
The man's eyes narrow, and his voice is hoarse when he speaks. Blood beads at the corner of his mouth, and his face is filled with barely contained rage. "Where did you get that?"
Tim snorts as he twirls the revolver in his hand again.
"You melted the original one, correct? Turned it into a symbol of protection after you bought it from an auction?"
Bruce doesn't bother to respond. Tim didn't need him to.
"You're not the only one who can replicate a weapon precisely. When you have a speedster for a friend, time travel is easy as well."
For a second, devastated horror flashes on Bruce's face. A moment that meant a lot to the older man was ruined with a fake. That, more so than the bruises littering his body, pains the older man.
Tim leans closer to Bruce and presses the barrel to the father's head.
Arctic eyes frozen in fury stare at resiliently bitter blue eyes. The teen's face falls to impassiveness as he regards his once mentor.
"You should've kept your hands off of my siblings. When I see you in hell, tell me how it feels to die the same way your parents did."
Three gun shots ring out in the alley. When the police arrive at the scene after a slow response time, they find Bruce Wayne sprawled out in the same spot Martha and Thomas Wayne were killed over three decades ago.
They never find who shot the Prince of Gotham.
#dc comics#tim drake#dc universe#bruce wayne#dc au#villain tim drake#bamf tim drake#tim has no allusions that killing bruce will send him to hell as well#at least his siblings will be safe even if they hate him for this

What you mean by" willis todds love for jason is the reason bruce failed him" ?
Sorry ive seen your post and I agree with everything but this just kinda suprise me, not hating, just curiuos
HELLO! so this is a take that is based on pre-new 52 todds, before they were simplified to the one dimensional (and classist) personalities they're known for now. neither of them were shown to be abusive or willfully negligent, but rather found themselves in bad situations out of their control and died, leaving jason to fend for himself.
in the most simplest way what i mean is willis todds self sacrificing actions of turning to crime in order to provide for jason and catherine is the key defining part of jasons life and why he views bruce's love for him as 'not enough'.
(of course, the actual proof of this is like. one single panel and its not even said by jason. however i think it is something that can be found in jasons character through other, less obvious situations.)
in jasons initial (public) return to gotham and that long and convoluted plan to mess around with batman psychology to get the two of them and the joker in the same place, it all seems like a well planned out revenge story until the final conversation:
Batman: Under the Red Hood
it always stood out to me, not just because of how absolutely heart wrenching the entire moment is (definitely read utrh if you haven't, at least once), but because it really gives you an insight into what love and loving someone means to jason.
to him it's an all encompassing responsibility. this idea that love is something that you need to be able to prove by the quantitive value of what you'll sacrifice for it. in this case, jason is saying i love you" in the way he truly believes gets across how much he means it; i would kill the person who hurt you.
whenever i read this part of utrh, another situation immediately pops into my mind. and that's when jason found out two-face had killed willis todd.
Batman #411
upon finding out two-face had killed willis, jason goes on a brief grief filled rampage, swearing he'll kill him for what he did. it's important to note that up until now, jason had assumed willis was still in prison, only to find out he was actually murdered.
again, it's this idea that love is the extremes you'll go to for family. jason was well aware of willis' less than legal means to make money, and even bruce makes a mention of it in.
Batman: A death in the family
i imagine, like a lot of what fuels jason to fight crime now, guilt is a major deciding factor in a lot of his choices. it's this guilt that he feels upon hearing about willis' death that makes him take it out on two-face. it's even guilt that plays a huge factor even in new 52 stories (such as Cheer).
so when he returns to gotham, or even before that, just hearing about what bruce had done following his death (locking the joker up instead of killing him, taking in tim as his robin) were, to him, clear evidence that he did not love jason in any way that mattered. that bruce did not love jason as much as jason loved him.
because loving him means giving up your morals. loving him means sacrificing your health and your time and your safety.
but bruce didn't do any of that in a way jason could see.
i imagine to someone like jason, who lost every parental figure in some capacity, whether it be to illness or crime or something else entirely, the evident disregard for him was as painful as any rejection could have been.
a lot of how jason feels and acts can be seen in much more interesting ways if we all look at him for he is; an unreliable narrator. he is missing huge chunks of story, especially when it comes to bruce, and has no choice but to act irrationally on the little truth he does know.
of course we the readers, and some other characters, know just how hard jasons death was for bruce. how destructively he mourned for his son.
but again, the surface level proof of it is not enough for jason, who's entire life has been love through sacrifice. but now, it's a sacrifice bruce can not ever give him.
Batman: Under the Red Hood
#<- he who is not normal about pre new 52 willis todd#its the first time im getting this thought written out properly so i hope it makes sense#jason is just such an emotionally complicated character#but he was also a child#which is the one thing everyone seems to forget#bruce wayne#jason todd#willis todd#dc meta#character study#saki anons

Finally making myself catch up on WFA and
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT!!!!!
I love Kon and Cass being friends so much and it's never talked about I'm genuinely so happy I could cry
THEY'RE SO CUTE! LOOK AT MY FAVES BEING BUDDIES!!!!
Of course the Prettiest Boy being carried by his friends
And now there's a whole Joker kidnaps Duke plot and it's handled Marvelously.
Bruce's reaction was fucking beautifully handled.
Perfect. The panic, the forced calm, the quiet internalized rage that promises violence and retribution. THIS is my Bat-Dad. The one who loves so fervently he loses his tightly wound control, while control is his biggest stabilizer. Who, when triggered, becomes protective rather than pragmatic and distances those he loves in hopes of protecting them. The father who failed his son and couldn't bear to fail so badly again. YES.
Obviously he tells his kids to stay back and they passively tell him to fuck off lol
But Dami trying to bring his pets to Tim's apartment just XD
GOLIATH LOOKS SO BABY I CAN'T
Fucking OUCH? Are you trying to kill me?!
And then ripping my fucking heart out
And then of course the fucker dips out on his own to hunt down the fucking Joker himself because duh. But also how did a room full of detectives not notice him walking out??? We see it in the art (I caught that the first read through, I appreciate that little bit of silent storytelling)
Also love that they are, even passively, including Batwing and Azrael. They're so rare and it's nice to see them appreciated.
And now I'm as caught up as I can be without signing up for shit.
To close off
Obligatory "I love Jason Todd" moment. Chibi Hood is so cute. He's such a little shit and I love him.

Favourite tim drake recs? :0
Assuming you mean fanfic recs, I've got probably the most for him and this is long, so it's going under the cut;
This is genuinely one of my favorites, it's set post-Red Robin, and deals with Tim's vigilante stalking habits, his family finding out, Cass realizing there's no photos of Tim, them setting out to take/find some of him (a much harder feat than you'd think) and finally, Tim seeing the photos. It's amazing and sweet, and I can't recommend it enough. (I especially like the Bruce & Tim and Tim & Damian in this)
This is by the same author, also set post-Red Robin. This is Damian and Tim focused, Damian POV, in which Damian sees Bruce's contingency plans for him and the rest of the family, and with nobody else to turn to, runs for Tim. Canon divergent in the way Bruce doesn't have a contingency for his children, neither does Tim for his team, or them for him, but it kinda makes sense in this setting. Their interactions are amazing here, and seems so real.
In this, Tim gets a tonsillectomy. An elaboration in the form of a long fic. A must-read, I feel. It's funny and has so many feels and such good characterization.
!!! Can't believe I almost forgot about this one! Tim is Bruce's assistant, not son, and never became a vigilante. He's incredibly overworked, but no less dedicated to the Waynes. It's heartwrenching and sweet and funny and—words can't do it justice. It's a must read. The Al Ghuls make a cameo but Tim knows how to deal with them. Tim's deeply sad but next to nobody knows and those that do just accept it (including him). Kon is the MVP. Cass. Damian and Tim have an odd bond built of mutual respect and disdain for everyone around them. Luthor tries to recruit Tim every year and fails.
This is funny and amazing—Tim lands in a universe where he's technically considered a drug addict, since coffee is a drug and in the regular universe everyone drinks it.
The YJ fic Ever. I've recced this at least three times, and I will continue to. It's amazing characterization all around—both YJ and batfam—and genuinely is so fun. I love everyone in this. When an unknown enemy threatens Robin, Gotham's vigilantes come together to keep him safe. Unfortunately, they're protecting the wrong Robin. Or: Tim Drake plans his own rescue. Things get complicated.
This is Tim & Damian—Tim gets his overprotective big brother moment :) love love LOVE the way everyone is written here.
This is short and hilarious—Tim has amnesia after a head wound (can only remember back to his YJ days) and tries to bullshit his way out of anyone noticing. He might have succeeded if not for Cass.
This is a time loop fic, switching POVs. Tim's stuck in a time loop in which Jason always dies. The loop before the one this was set in, he accidentally kills Damian out of stress and too-fast reflexes. He breaks down when he sees Damian again, the whole thing unravels, and they resolve to help him out of it.
THIS SERIES MAKES ME FERAL. Jack, Tim and sometimes Dana, set when Jack made Tim quit from Robin. Horror-type elements and beautifully poetic, but centered around Jack's POV of the son he realizes he doesn't know, and him realizing he may be a shit dad. Dana's the best stepmom ever, and Tim's far nicer to her than he is Jack. This is the first work, in which Jack tries and fails to understand this Tim, and realizes that this Tim is Robin, not Tim. This is the second (and last) work in the series, in which Tim hasn't fully quit the lifestyle even though he's not going out as Robin, but Jack has no proof he hasn't. Just a hunch and a few odd occurrences that us, the readers, who are familiar with Tim's hero life will find obvious, but Jack does not. Dana makes Tim happier, more Tim than Tim-Robin, than Jack does, and Jack hates it. Near the end, he starts calling Tim Robin, not Tim. I LOVE it. Even if you hate Jack (like I do) you need to read this, for the Tim characterization if nothing else. Outsider POV, except he shouldn't be an outsider. But he is.
This is so fucking funny. Tim gets a matching tattoo with Kon, and hides it from Bruce. When Bruce—and the rest of his family—find out, all goes to hell.
Remember when I said the Jack and Tim series was only slightly horror? This is horror. Bruce's got a habit of picking up monsters, and this one is about Tim. If you're sensitive to horror, please read the tags and maybe avoid it, because this is delightful but not for everyone.
In this, Tim becomes an unintentional sugar daddy to the caped community. It's a bit iffy in some places, but hilarious.
This is Dick and Tim (surprised it took me this long to rec one with them as the main focus tbh) and it's Dick checking up on his little brother. Pure fluff, and genuinely amazing.
This is Tim & Bruce but also Tim & Tam in some places. Bruce forgets Tim is the majority shareholder for WE and is thus invited to shareholder meetings, Tim finds this very amusing and is generally a menace. You can FEEL the teenager in this Tim. Amazing.
Tim's de-aged to a kid in this, and re-meets his family. Fluff and feels ensue.
This is Bruce and Tim. Bruce isn't prepared for his newest Robin's neuroses.
This has Tim & Cassie meeting at an archaeologist event as kids and having to fight a monster thing :) it's cute
GODDD this fic? This fic ruined me. Beautiful Tim characterization, a gorgeous look at Bruce and how much he fucks up despite caring, and Dick being a stressed but amazing big brother with gorgeous writing. I love their brotherly affections here, and Tim's weird neuroses being shown here. Tim & Bruce is how it starts, and it's very much centered around their relationship, but it tapers off into Dick & Tim, which I'm not complaining about. Kon (and Bart!) makes a cameo and is an amazing friend. Can't rec this enough. If you read none of the other fics, please read this one.
This is Dick and Tim again. Dick forces Tim to go undercover with him to an Elvis convention in a thinly veiled attempt to spend time with the brother who he doesn't think knows how much he loves him. It's set in Tim's POV, though, so until Dick says this, Tim doesn't know. Hilarious and short.
This is Dick and Tim (who's surprised? Nobody) where Dick goes to Robin!Tim's science fair because Tim mentioned it and well, nobody else was going. Short and sweet.
This deals with the batfam finding out about the shitshow that was Tim's BruceQuest. If you're a stickler for canon I'd recommend you skip this one, but if not, it's a great read.
This is Dick and Tim again, and it's amazing. Tim's alone on Christmas Eve. Dick finds out, and does something about it. It's Robin!Tim, so this is Dick, Babs and Tim. This author is amazing at writing their interactions, plus inside Dick's head is a tricky place to write and they nail it perfectly. Mostly Dick & Tim, but since he invites Tim to Babs' holiday party, Babs makes a good number of cameos.
This is Tim talking a jumper off the ledge while Damian watches. Then they talk about it. Tim from Damian's POV is always interesting, but this especially is amazing.
This is a core four fic, Tim's POV! Pure humor. Tim finds a dildo in the dishwasher and he drags them for a team meeting so he can sus out whose it is.
I've recced this before, I think, but I'll do it again. Red Robin canon divergence fic in which Bruce is actually dead, and Tim calls Dick to tell him he thinks he may have been wrong. Dick's POV, short, but the emotion in this is outstanding.
In this fic, Damian has trouble with the transition from Dick's Batman to Bruce's Batman. Tim, who's also had both, is surprisingly helpful. This has so many Tim and Damian feels that I'm literally bursting at the seams. Melancholy, camaraderie, and all the good stuff. Damian's POV, and since he sucks at so much as guessing at what's going on in Tim's head, it's all the more great.
This is Dick and Tim, a soft Christmastime fic.
This is Bruce and Tim. Bruce and Tim have a sort-of game that started when Tim was thirteen. Initially, it was Tim stealing sips (or occasionally whole mugs) of Bruce’s coffee, back when he was too young for Alfred to allow him to drink it. Now, though, Bruce is getting his own back, and steals Tim’s coffee when he can. Sweet and fluffy.
Here, Tim gets a headwound and only remembers back to his Robin days, and forgets to be awkward around Dick and Damian. Tugs at the heartstrings. Dick's reminded of how much he misses this Tim.
This is really funny. Remember that time during the YJ days where the adult heroes were de-aged and the kid ones grew to be adults? Tim didn't reach six foot. In this, he's mocked ruthlessly for it.
Here, Tim goes to high school again after dropping out :) it's core four and hilarious
In this, Tim accidentally kills his dad in self defense—or rather, thinks he does, Jack's still alive but he doesn't know that until Dick shows up—and scrambles to call Dick. He calls Jason instead. Dick eventually gets called and shows up, and the brotherly feels in this are amazing. Tim's in shock for a good portion of it, and it's his POV, so you've got to piece some stuff together. Bad dad Jack, as in worse than canon bad dad Jack. Tugs on the heartstrings, and have I said I love Dick in this? Because I do. Bruce shows up near the end, and to everyone's surprise, doesn't absolutely fuck things up and/or fail as a parent.
Here, Tim is sick and alone. Dick, after not hearing from Tim at all for three days, goes to his apartment, finds him sick, and takes care of him. Eventually he gets dragged to the Manor for some actual r&r. It's sweet, and this writer has an amazing way with words and an intriguing flow.
In this, Bruce knows Tim. They have a routine, have habits, they know each other. This is so so touching, and I love it so much.
Here, Tim and Steph give Bruce a headache. It's amazing.
I..can't even begin to describe this. Bruce is fresh from the timeline, and this is a sort of introspection/character study type thing about him and Tim and how Tim's changed. Mostly, though? Mostly, Bruce just gives his son a hug.
Here, Kon is Tim's work husband. Bruce suffers. Pure fluff and humor, with a touch of feels.
Here, Bruce takes Tim to get his wisdom teeth out. They're both worried, but together, they're alright. Tim cries while doped up on the drugs. He cries a lot.
Here, 90's!Tim Drake wakes up in his Red Robin body. Exhausted from a YJ mission, he chooses to focus on getting through a normal day so as not to disrupt things for his future self. But, y'know, his way. Hilarious and so in-character, if exaggerated for comedy.
This is Tim and Damian—Damian gets hit with truth serum on patrol, and a pissed off Tim has to come and get him. Damian resolves to not tell Tim he's been hit with truth serum. They get closer as a result. Love their dynamic in this.
This is core four again, but just general teenager superhero chaos. Can't rec it enough
Here, Tim tries to build a LEGO Gotham, but his family just can't leave it—or him—alone. He calls a family meeting to tell them to knock it off, and they do not. Fluff and humor.
Here, Tim has appendicitis and gets his appendix removed. The best mix of fluff, feels, and good old complicated family dynamics ever
In this, Bruce tries to navigate giving affection to his odd son, Tim. Touching and funny.
This is Tim and Damian—Damian crashes on Tim's bed in the Watchtower when injured, Tim finds him. They talk, and maybe bond a bit, even though they'd never admit it.
Here, Bruce hugs Tim. Really nothing else to it.
Another fic where Tim wakes up with amnesia and pretends to know his family so he's not rude. He's found out when he correctly deduces Bruce is his dad, but makes the mistake of calling Bruce dad.
This is Dick and Tim again. Tim gets de-aged into a six-month-old, and Dick takes care of him. Soft and so so sweet.
In this, Tim's trying to work in his apartment when his siblings keep showing up to distract him and get him to take a break. It's sweet of them, if very annoying.
This is Bruce and Tim. Tim's injured and lying in bed, Bruce gets him takeout. Feels fuzzy and just...good. You've got to read it to know what I'm talking about, no summary does it justice.
Here, Damian tries to make amends with Tim. He does it very oddly though, so Tim thinks he has a crush on him, and avoids him all the more for it because ew-gross-ew-ew.
In this, Tim gets his teeth knocked out and grabs Dick as a mediator so he tells Bruce. Short and funny-sweet. You can tell this is in Tim's Robin run, due to all the little hints dropped.
This is Tim and Kon, funny and nonsensical. Tim calls Kon in the early hours of the morning, drunk. Kon thinks he deserves sainthood for this.
In this, Tim has road rage and most of his family find that out in the most hilarious way possible.
Bruce and Tim—a test sort of fic? Interesting, definitely.
This is timkon, Tim has memory loss and is amazed by Kon all over again.
Core four go to a gala :)
This is Dick and Tim, Tim breaks into Dick's house, accidentally interrupts his nap, tries to leave out of guilt, and gets wrangled into hugs. So so soft and so so sweet.
Another de-aged Tim fic, but this time with six year old Tim and Bruce taking care of him. This is so melancholy and...ugh. I love them.
Here, Tim and Dick are thrown into an alternate universe and have to try and get back with no other support system and no way out. They meet this world's version of Bruce and Alfred, though.
CEO Tim, and hates it. He makes that Luthor's problem.
Timkon, in which Tim plans all his dates VIA corkboard and Kon is so attracted to that.
CEO Tim (again), except he's still a teenager and people end up thinking he's a communist. This is short and hilarious all the way through. Also, Bruce is there.
This is The kid!Tim fic ever. Tim, having found a weird hole after a storm, decides to go exploring ignoring the fact that This Is Gotham and They Probably Have Cursed Stuff Down There.Luckily, it was just a cave system that spans the entire Gotham underground. Unluckily, Tim is a very curious child. Tim's a sorta eldritch being at the end?? Amazing, 100 would recommend.
In this, Tim finds out he isn't his parents' biological son. This changes everything. This changes nothing. Can't say anything else without spoiling, but I can't rec it enough.
In this fic, Bruce is back in time in Drake Manor, and meets baby Tim. It's like you're frozen in time, and all that matters is Bruce and his infant not-yet-son.
Here, Kon and Tim date. Tim's a cryptid stalker that refuses to be photographed, Dick is a big brother that loves his little brother, and it's cute.
Sorry it took me so long to compile this list anon, happy reading!

While ao3 is down, I'm going to see if I can figure out how to post directly here.
Two Weeks Of Whump Challenge Day 9. Branding
Tim reached over and behind his head, grabbing his shirt by the back of his collar and pulling it off. He tossed it towards the laundry basket and flopped face down on the bed, ready to drift off to sleep.
Until something poked him.
"Your pants, too." Conner reminded.
"Mm. Nng. Leave me 'lone." Tim grunted in response.
"Tim, baby, this isn't up for debate. You've got mud, blood and… what I hope is rainwater, caked everywhere."
"Vigilante aesthetic."
"No."
Tim huffed, but pushed himself up anyway. "Fine." He stumbled to his dresser and grabbed out a pair of sweatpants to change into.
"I'm so sorry for insisting you at least change out of your uniform before getting into… bed."
Conner finished his sentence softly, and Tim turned to see what had caught his boyfriend's attention.
"What."
"Who's 'JJ'?"
Tim froze, and he could swear he felt his heart stop.
'My dear son, JJ! Now doesn't that just have a nice ring to it?'
'Sure does, Puddin'!'
Their voices echoed in his mind, accompanied by phantom pains.
The feeling of the electrical shocks.
The prick of needles.
The far-too-tight cuffs keeping him from fighting back or defending himself.
He was back there.
No!
He was here!
He'd gotten out.
He'd survived.
He'd beaten them.
They were gone.
… Right?
"... What?" He finally managed.
"Your leg. You've got a tattoo that says 'JJ'. I was just wondering, cause I've never heard you mention them. Were they an ex?" Conner got up and came over, face concerned. He must have seen Tim's reaction to his question.
Tim didn't know what to say.
How long..?
He had been rid of them.
"W-what..?" He couldn't breathe.
They were…
They were gone.
"Tim? Are you okay?"
Tim closed his eyes.
Everything was… way too much right now.
He felt sick.
Dizzy.
Sounds were too loud.
He was too close.
Tim stumbled back, falling against the dresser.
'There's a good lad. Now why don't you help your daddy with a little something?'
Hands pulled at his hair.
His own?
He didn't care.
"Tim!"
'Ah, ah, ah! That's not your name anymore, is it? Naaah. You look more like a Junior.'
"Get away from me."
He felt himself slide down to his knees, heard… someone screaming.
Who was screaming?
Him?
"I'm here. Baby, I'm right here. I've got you."
'Now that I've got you, my boy,' His voice echoed in Tim's head, 'Killing Batsy will be a piece of cake!'
He wanted to go home.
He wanted his family.
But he couldn't move.
He couldn't move!
Something was restraining him!
"Stop! Tim, baby, please! You're going to hurt yourself!"
He had to get free.
He had to.
They were going to kill him.
They were going to use him to kill Batman.
He felt a prick in his neck and redoubled his efforts to free himself.
He couldn't do this again.
He didn't want to lose himself again.
"Shh. Shh. You're going to be okay. You're going to be okay. Just give it a minute."
He felt himself relax against his will.
He…
He had to fight.
He… had to get free.
He couldn't give in…
But whatever he'd been injected with didn't give him a choice.
His mind started to clear and he found himself lying on his back, head and shoulders resting in Conner's lap.
"You're okay. You're okay, baby. I'm so sorry. Bruce is on his way. Just relax."
Conner…
He looked scared.
The room began to grow dark, but Tim reached up, shakily.
Conner looked scared, but Tim's brain was in too much of a fog to figure out why.
His fingers brushed a tear away from his boyfriend's cheek before falling limply back down, resting across his own chest.
Conner grabbed it and held it. "You're okay, sweetheart." He whispered.
Tim thought he might have said something else as well, but he couldn't make it out, already drifting off.

Why did Dick leave?
So there’s this take that has been bothering me recently: it's often framed that, in current versions of canon where Dick Grayson is fired from being Robin, that while, yes, him being fired from Robin can be acknowledged, it's not like Dick Grayson was kicked out. So, it's seen as Dick choosing to leave, and the conversation is often centered around Bruce being emotionally insensitive and wrong, but Dick should've known better and recognized this as Bruce just lashing out from fear of Dick getting hurt. Maybe if we were going with really old canon (like 40s, 50s), I could see that interpretation, but I feel like that's quite disingenuous interpretation of these events based on the various canonical versions of Dick getting fired from being Robin. I think there's an interesting angle to this when you consider the fact that this isn't the first time Dick was fired.
Ok, so I understand everyone has different opinions shall we say about Robin: Year One (spoilers ahead), but I think if you choose to engage with this canon, it changes the way I at least viewed Dick's final firing from being Robin. Just to bring you up to speed: in the comic, Dick gets nearly beaten to death as Robin in front of Batman by Harvey Dent, while Batman is tied up and watching until he's able to free himself and save Dick. Following this, Bruce Wayne chooses this very emotionally mature response:
Yes Bruce, let's not be compassionate to the child that was nearly just killed, let's go straight to "you're fired." Not surprising but definitely disappointing. I think what's not talked much about is the aftermath though. The point is often made in fandom that even if Bruce fired Dick from Robin, he would still want Dick to be there because he values Dick as a person himself, not just as Robin. However, after Bruce gives this speech, he makes no attempt to engage with Dick. Sure, in the comic, it's written as both of them not saying anything to each other, with Alfred saying "The young sir adjusts his schedule to normal working hours." However, remember: Dick Grayson is a literal child in this comic- he doesn't have the onus of communicating with Bruce. And it's clear that as Bruce takes no initiative to talk with Dick.
And the comic couldn't be more explicitly clear that, as a result of this, Dick runs away from home since he feels that Bruce doesn't need nor want him.
I think from this, a clear and explicit line can be drawn from the past to present, where it is seen that Dick sees his place in Bruce's life as being explicitly tied to Robin. And I'm sure that throughout their time living together, maybe Dick started to feel differently, but an insecurity like this doesn't just disappear. When such a similar situation happens years later where Bruce decides to fire him again, what would stop Dick from thinking the same thing?
As a matter of fact, in this same comic, there is no real resolution of this conflict. Bruce says nothing to the effect of loving Dick or viewing him as a son, instead as soon as they're both back in the cave:
Who reads a letter where your pseudo-son is like: hey I don't think you want or need me so I'm running away, and has this response? Basically, Bruce says "I'll let you be Robin again but only if you follow my orders always, even if that means I die." Wonderful Bruce, 10/10. This fear is never assuaged at all, so I get confused when people speak on how Dick should've been so sure in his place in Bruce's life. Like, this boy literally could not have been clearer about his insecurities and Bruce sidesteps them in this moment and more than that- reaffirms that Dick's role in his life is only as a Robin that follows his orders always.
I understand a lot of people don't like this comic or don't enjoy to engage with it, but I feel like the parallels between this comic and any comic that deals with Dick Grayson's eventual firing are so strong that I couldn't not speak on it. I understand that other comics could lead to different interpretations on their relationship and center more on Bruce showing how much he cares about Dick outside Robin, but I feel like this point is still valid as in other comics, Dick has expressed this insecurity of not feeling secure as his son.
Tales of New Teen Titans #50
In this case, Dick is affirmed as Bruce's son, but this still speaks to the lingering insecurities Dick has about his role in Bruce's life in my opinion. As spoken on earlier, these insecurities are not unfounded and make a lot of sense for Dick to have because Bruce doesn't speak on his love for Dick as a son much at all because he's emotionally insensitive and because of, frankly, the way Bruce centers Robin over Dick.
So yes, Dick left but not because he was just very angry about having Robin taken form him (which I still think is very valid) but also because he has reasons to believe that Robin being fired is a rejection of Dick Grayson himself.

The next day Jason is with Crane. Jason is still reeling from last night. Dick knows pretty much everything now and that wasn’t a part of the plan. Jason thinks it’s only a matter of time before Dick shows back up and destroys the entire thing. It’s only a matter of time before Dick ruins everything all over again. And he thinks about you and how mad and worried you were. It’s all growing a bit too heavy for him, even with the drug. But, he pushes Crane anyway.
The sooner they get this plan in action, the better. The sooner Jason can take care of Dick, the better. But, Crane isn’t having any of it. Crane wants to go through with his plan but he’s also not telling Jason a single thing about it. It’s like Jason is just a piece in his game, a pawn. Doing all of the bidding and only knowing what’s going on when he actually needs to in order to do Crane's bidding. But, Jason shakes that thought off because Crane cares about him. Crane wouldn’t be just using him. Right?
“I met that girl of yours.” Crane states, getting tired of Jason’s pestering about going after Dick.
“I heard.” Jason quips, his voice snippy and harsh.
“She is a handful, isn’t she?”
Jason knows what he’s doing and he won’t. He can be as high as Crane wants him to be but he still has a line. And that line is you. It is always you. Anyone but you.
“I can handle her.” Jason states.
“Can you? You can fight better than her. You've had the training. But, like Dick Grayson, she walked away from last night.” Crane lets out a wistful sigh. “And she threatened to kill me.” Crane looks to be hurt as the words leave his lips. Jason knows better than to think someone threatening Crane's life would hurt his feelings. “Doesn’t it bother you that her and Bruce didn’t kill the Joker for you?” Crane asks and Jason’s eyes land on the floor. “I mean,” Crane lets out another sigh. “That maniac killed you and they couldn’t be bothered to kill him for you. Sam is at least a killer now but not for you. I, though, I brought you back.” Crane gives Jason a sinister smile as he places a hand on his shoulder.
Jason hates it because Crane makes a point. Bruce couldn’t even bend his morals for him. Bruce said he was his son and he took him in, he let him be Robin. Bruce was supposed to protect him and everyone else. But, then he couldn’t even kill the Joker. He’s not asking him to kill Two-face or The Riddler or even Crane, but he should have killed the Joker for him. That’s the part that hurts. And you turn around and starts taking out lowlives but you didn’t even hit the Joker first. Not even for him and you've been wanting his blood on your hands since your mom died. But, somehow, that wasn’t enough for even you. Jason, though, does know someone killed him. And he knows what you said about what him dying did to you. He thinks that person just beat you to it. Bruce though, even Dick. Dick could have killed him, too and he didn’t. No one that claims to care about him at all killed the Joker for him and none of you brought him back. Jonathan Crane brought him back from the dead. Not the people who care bout him.
“This isn’t about her. It’s about Dick.” Jason shakes his head because you're still the line. Despite it all, you're the line he won’t cross.
Jason knows, under the haze of the drug, you would have brought him back from the dead if you knew how. And if it were something you knew he'd want. You would have fought and chewed into fate and the Reaper with nothing but your bare hands just to bring him back. You would have killed the Joker if someone didn't beat you to it. After everything going on, you're still the one person who hasn't given up on him.
You're the line.
“See, that’s your problem. It’s not just about Dick Grayson. It’s about all of Gotham and your girlfriend is a part of that.”
“Okay.” Jason states, unsure where else he could possibly be going with this.
“She’s going to be a problem, just like that older brother of yours.” Crane warns as he turns back around as he walks into the little office building. “She’ll come after me eventually and then I bet she’ll come after you, with Dick Grayson at her side.”
“She’s not a problem.” Jason defends.
You could have killed him last night. If the first knife would have missed, you would have had a second one already in the air on its way to his jugular. If you want someone dead with a knife, you're more than capable but instead, you didn’t. You've had opportunities to kill him and fight him at full force but you don’t. You aren’t the problem, no matter what Crane says.
“Isn’t she? She still wants you to join their side and turn me in, the person who has helped you the most. Haven’t you thought about her using you? Her fear drove her to you and now she’s lost. She doesn’t know who is without you because she got to try to fix you and distract herself from it. You got her to live in that fancy mansion.” Crane says and Jason, right about now, is pretty glad he left out more about you.
Crane pushes sometimes for more information but Jason deflects and pulls information about anyone else he can. Jason won’t let Crane target you. That’s not how this partnership is going to work. It doesn’t matter. Jason Todd doesn’t make very many promises, but he made a promise to you and he’s not breaking it. You don’t break your promises to him.
“She’s not using me. I can get her to join our side.” Jason states, his voice growing more annoyed.
“Then why haven’t you?”
“That wasn’t part of the plan.” Jason lies.
“If I told you to give her the drug and help us, would you?” Crane asks, his brows slightly furrowing with the question because he’s already pretty sure he knows the answer.
Crane doesn’t know you already took the drug. Crane also doesn’t know the real reason Jason burned down his lab. Jason told Crane he was just covering his tracks after Hank. He knew Dick would be digging deeper and he might find it. That isn’t actually a complete lie, that’s probably what would have happened if Dick didn’t already find it. But, the real reason was that he didn’t want you going back and making more of it and taking it. He feels the comedown and sure, while he’s high or when he’s desperate not to feel that way again, it feels worth it. In those moments it always feels worth it but you were always better with dealing with your shit than he was. He doesn’t want you involved with Crane and he doesn’t want you addicted to the drug. You deserve better.
He’d never give you the drug. He’d never ask you to work alongside Crane.
“Yeah, she would do it. She’s just as fucked up as I was.” Jason lies through his teeth, shifting his weight to his right foot.
Crane nods his head but he met you. You're not scared, not in the way Jason was. He can tell you have her own issues but you're not like Jason when Jason showed up at Arkham. “Maybe she’s not who you thought she was.” Crane sighs. “You should really be focused on taking care of her with Dick, if that’s your goal that is.”
“No.” Jason states firmly. “Not happening.” Jason scoffs. “She’s not a fucking problem. She fights with Dick all the damn time and she fought him last night with me. Nothing to worry about.” Jason shakes his head, still a little confused what that was even about.
“Oh, I’m not worried.” Crane states. “You are. If you don’t take care of her, you’ll always be stuck here. You’ll never be able to get to your full potential because you’re too worried about what she’ll do. Maybe what she’ll think of you. Though, I have to say, she is not pleased with you over that Hawk fellow.”
“And she still fought Dick for me.” Jason urges. “Clearly, she doesn’t have that big of a problem with it.”
“I’m just giving you my advice. You want to be fearless but you’re still scared of what she’ll do and what she thinks of you.” Crane tsks.
“I’m not taking care of her. I want to go after Dick. Look, we know the drug works. I’m exhibit one.” Jason states, trying to deflect from you. It can’t be you.
“You’ll see, my boy.” Crane states.
The night before rings through your head like a migraine you can't quit. You and Dick got back pretty later, or rather early in the morning. Dick was instant he could take care of the gunshot wound on his own. He'd done it before, apparently. So, that left you to your room alone and sleeping didn't come too easy.
You could have had both of them but Dick just wouldn't listen and Jason doesn't listen and you're too damn loyal to him. If it were anyone else, you could have thrown a knife to injure them and you would have had him and then could have gotten Crane. But, it's Jason and you don't want to hurt him even if hurting him could bring him back and end up being for his own good. You just won't take the risk. And it sucks. And then you almost got shot because Jason and Dick can't work out their problems like normal people with an actual conversation. You're stuck in the middle of the two of them and you don't even know how the hell that happened.
And then there's the way Jason looked at you when you asked him to come home.
The drug must have been wearing off because he looked scared and for the life of you, you don't know why he would be so scared to come home. Yes, he killed Hank and that's bad but everyone attacked Gar while possessed and moved on from that. Gar killed people when he was being controlled. Jason is killing people while he's manipulated and drugged. None of them have attempted to do anything about any of the people you've killed. Dick just let Bruce walk right out after killing the Joker. Jason shouldn't be scared to come home and you feel horrible he clearly does. Getting him back just got a lot more difficult it seems and you're starting to second guess where you should stand in all of it.
You walk into the Batcave where you find Gar and Kory, looking to be researching something on the Batcomputer. You're best guess is they're trying to track down Jason. That's the only thing anyone is doing these days anyway.
"There you are!" Gar yells with excitement and relief as he rushes to you.
Gar's been worried. You and Dick went off without an explanation and didn't come back last night. Neither of you could even be bothered to answer a phone or keep the phones on for that matter. Kory hadn't heard anything and neither did Connor. He's relieved to see you're okay, even if you're looking a little out of it.
"Oh, yeah, hey." You let out a sigh as Gar brings you in for a hug.
"Where were you last night?" Kory questions. "And where is Dick?"
"And what happened?" Gar asks as he pulls away.
You furrow your brows, looking between them as your heart misses a beat. "W-what do you mean?"
Have they really not seen Dick? You might not have slept long or well but Dick is still, somehow, usually always awake. At least here like maybe the manor is haunting him in its own way. But, Kory and Gar are watching you expectantly and you worry maybe something went wrong with the whole gunshot thing.
"I don't think it's some coincidence you and Dick disappeared yesterday and stopped answering your phones." Kory crosses her arms.
Your jaw opens and closes a few times. "Uh..I mean...yeah..." You offer a yikes expression, squinting your eye slightly.
"Explain, now." Kory states sternly.
"Well, uh, you see...you haven't seen Dick or...heard from him?" You ask slowly.
"No." Kory grows more annoyed by the second.
"Not since he dropped Dawn off." Gar offers, hoping you get to the point soon.
You suck in a breath as you tug your sleeves over your hands. "Uh, yeah...so Dick got, uh shot. But, he was fine."
"So, you just went to bed?!" Gar asks.
"And you didn't think to come get me? Or any of us?" Kory demands.
"He said he had it and he's been shot before. I wasn't gonna argue with him."
"Since when? You argue with him all the time." Gar shakes his head in disbelief. Of all times you aren't going to argue with Dick, it's when he's shot. He could be bleeding out somewhere.
"Yes, I was not in the mood last night." You defend your stance as regret starts to chew at your stomach.
Kory lets out a groan. "And where did you last see him?"
"In the living room? Before I went to bed." You state but before you start giving up more answers, the one and only finally makes his way into the Batcave. "Oh, thank fuck." You let out a breath of relief.
"What happened!?" Kory asks quickly, immediately rushing over to Dick who's a little unsteady on his feet.
You and Gar watch the two of them and you can't help the grin that comes to your lips. Rachel made jokes about the two of them and said she thought it was weird but they'd be cute together. You get it now. Kory ran to him in the same you would have if it were Jason. Dick is clearly the idiot between the two of them.
You eye Gar. "Bet you ten bucks it'll be Kory to close the deal when she gets tired of waiting for him to get his shit together."
"I'm not gonna bet on that." Gar whispers with a soft grimace.
"Because you'll lose?" You raise, offering him a smirk.
"Yes." Gar chuckles. "I don't know if Dick is capable of having that conversation unprovoked."
You nod, rolling your eyes. "Batboys." You let out a sigh. "Okay, I give Kory a month."
"Four, tops." Gar sticks out his hand and you shake it with a soft laugh before you and Gar follow Kory and Dick to the medbay.
Dick takes off his shirt and reveals a gunshot wound on the upper left side of his chest. You furrow your brows. It looks nasty and his entire chest is covered in blood, most of it dry but some of it still looks fresh. Kory shakes her head, grabbing the supplies to stitch up the wound. Gar and you watch for a few minutes, mostly grimacing at the sight of it.
"Dude, that looks horrible." Gar scrunches his nose.
"Five inches over and we'd be burying another body." Kory says as she starts addressing the wound.
"Dude, seriously?" You huff. "You said you'd take care of that." You roll your eyes. You wonder how he could be so dumb. And reckless. It's not like it's a cut or a scrape. It's a literal gunshot wound close to his heart.
Kory stops what she's doing to look at you, Gar nearly snapping his head at you. Dick just glares at you, looking more annoyed than usual.
"What?" You ask, looking between all of them with wide eyes. "What'd I do now?"
"Let him go to bed with a gunshot wound and not tell anyone." Gar mutters under his breath, making you snap your entire attention on him. That's uncharacteristic.
"I'm not gonna force someone to let me help clean up their wounds." You mutter right back, earning a glare of disbelief from Gar. "Okay, unless it's Jaon or you." You snip back. "Sorry." Your eyes widen, looking between the three of them.
Gar keeps his stare on you. You're supposed to be friends and you're not looping him to anything anymore. You and Dick go off to fuck knows where and Dick almost gets killed. They're trying to find Jason since he went dark and you two can't be bothered to work as a team with the team. It's ridiculous. You're supposed to be a family.
"Explain." Kory warms, looking between you and Dick.
"It's nothing." Dick states, watching Kory stitch the wound.
"Nothing?!" Kory yells. "You two went off last night without a word! We deserve an explanation."
Dick pauses and you're not about to be on Kory's bad side. If Dick wants to piss Kory off, that's all on him. You do not want to do that. Kory is usually very nice but you have a feeling being on her bad side could get ugly. Plus, it's Kory.
"Jason's working with Jonathan Crane so we kidnapped him and took him to the cabin to lure Jason there. Then Jason and Dick started fighting and I helped. And then a helicopter came and Dick got shot." You explain simply.
The room falls silent for a few seconds as everyone looks between you and Dick. Kory wants to know why everyone who manages to get involved with Bruce Wayne ends up being some of the most reckless people she's ever encountered. Gar is piecing together everything you've told him and now he's even more frustrated. You and Dick went after Scarecrow and decided you could take him on and Jason on your own without any issues. You both didn't even have a backup plan. And Gar is realizing you not only took Jason's drug, but if it's Scarecrow, it was probably something he designed. You took a drug Scarecrow designed and knew that. Then neglected to tell everyone that piece of information.
You both could have died last night and everyone is supposed to just be normal about that. After everything.
"Wow, thanks." Dick quips.
"I'm not gonna disobey Kory. That's all you." You shake your head as you cross your arms over your chest but you can feel Gar's eyes still boring into you.
"And whose side were you even on last night, by the way?" Dick questions.
"You two morons almost fucking shot me!" You yell. "I was on your side. Hello? Do you not remember that and then you got the first swing on him. I was with you guys until you two almost shot me."
"That was Jason." Dick argues. "He pulled the trigger, not me."
"Because you grabbed his arm! It was aimed at you originally, not me." You let out a scoff.
"Enough." Kory warns, growing tired of the back and forth. The specifics of the fight last night don't matter right now when she's trying to fix a bullet wound that could have been fatal. She is so sick of losing people. "Barbara's responsible for this?" Kory asks.
"One of her snipers is, yeah." Dick answers.
"On her orders, I'm sure." Kory states. "Maybe I should go and have a word with her."
"I think there's been enough bloodshed for today." Gar adds in. "That was way too close, man." Gar's voice is soft but drenched in worry.
"I almost had him." Dick defends.
"No, I had him." You protest. "I had a knife ready to go. He never would have done it. I could have gotten him just fine but then you had to take the damn gun and I almost got shot." You pause for a second and if Dick would have just trusted you, maybe you really could have gotten him back. "We almost had him."
"Neither of you are listening!" Kory yells, looking between the two of you. "You scared us. Going out on your own, getting shot. It's not okay."
"I didn't want to put you guys at risk." Dick says. "She was here when I got the call. She's the only one that ever got through to Jason before. That's the only reason she went." Dick states calmly while Gar looks back at you as if waiting for you to explain why you didn't at least tell him.
"I'm not dragging you into it." You look to Gar as you shrug your shoulders.
"Oh, bullshit, guys." Gar spits and he's sick of this.
"Excuse me?" Dick questions.
"Dude, Hank blew up!" Gar yells. "Dawn left us forever, and Jason went dark. You're killing people!" Gar looks at you. "This family is dying and you two go out alone and Dick gets shot?" Gar yells before he starts growling lowly, his entire face turning green while his teeth turn into fangs. "Do you even hear the words coming out of your mouths!?"
"Gar?" You question slowly as your eyes grow wide. You've never seen him this upset before.
"Gar!" Kory yells, trying to snap him out of it.
"Hey." You stand in front of him, putting your hands on his cheeks. "Hello?"
His eyes land on yours, refocusing his attention and the fire in his bones starts to calm. The green fades from his face as his fangs start to retract. He's so upset and hurt and terrified for the lives of the people he cares about most, he didn't even realize he was starting to transform and Gar doesn't lose control.
"What?" Gar asks, his eyes scanning your face.
"Take ten." Kory states and she also feels like they're starting to lose everyone.
"Come on." You offer your hand to him as you turn around to walk away. Gar joins his hand with yours. "Don't do anything fucking insane without looping me in." You look over your shoulder at Dick, sending him a glare before you turn back around. "You were turning green." You whisper to Gar as you walk hand-in-hand across the Batcave.
"Because you guys could have died last night! I'm sick of losing this family!" His voice is panicked this time.
Gar might wear his emotions on his sleeve, but he is also very good at controlling his emotions. He never just loses control but he is today and it has you feeling even more guilty than you already were. Dick has Kory and Babs. You have Gar and Molly. Conner didn't really know Hank and he doesn't really know Jason. Gar, though, he knew Hank and was friends with Hank. Jason is his best friend and yet everyone has someone besides him. Everything has been a mess and Gar is the one left trying to fix everyone and help everyone but who helps him?
"Come on." You tug him along with you until you reach the living room. You let go of his hand and take a seat on the couch. "Yell at me for it. Go for it. You're scared and mad at us, fine. I get it. So, yell about it. I'm not gonna tell you to take ten. Turn green, turn into a tiger, go for it." You say with ease while Gar just stands in front of you, growing confused.
"What...? But I...I don't know..."
"Look, if you need to yell, do it. I deserve it and Dick does, too. You let me bitch to you for months. So, yell about how you're scared. I'm not gonna be hurt or mad. If it'll make you feel even a little bit better, do it. You take care of all of us, all the time. Take care of you." You offer and it's true. If he needs to yell about it, he should. You're not worried about him turning into a tiger. Gar deserves to let everything off of his chest. He always lets everyone else vent to him.
Gar's eyes narrow slightly. "This feels like a trick."
"It's not. I'd yell at Jason sometimes. He just kind of let me and then he'd yell at me. It was never that we were really yelling at each other, but just yelling. Because we were scared or mad. It usually helped. So, go for it." You shrug softly. "I do deserve it though so ya know."
Gar lets out a breath and decides he'll take the opportunity. He is just scared for all of you. Losing Donna was really hard. And losing Jason was worse. He was close with Json and that sucks. And now he's back and he's dark, working with a maniac. Hank is gone, there's no getting him back. Gar just can't lose more people and he's pissed that you and Dick don't seem to care how any of them feel about it. You're supposed to look out for each other to make sure you don't get blown up or beaten to death but Dick and you just go off on your own without a word.
"I'm just mad at you guys and I'm scared you're gonna go out there and get yourselves killed." Gar groans. "We had no idea where you guys went. You guys left and didn't loop us in. We're supposed to be a team and I know you're between teams but we're at least supposed to be friends! Jason is my friend, too! I want to be on his side. But you guys aren't telling us anything! I don't want to lose any more people."
You're tired of everything and you're tired of keeping secrets especially when Gar is looking at you desperate for answers. He says you're between teams right now but what if you don't want to be anymore? Jason is going to do whatever Crane is putting him up to and Dick is going to off and do his own thing anyway. Nothing you're doing has been working anyway. Maybe you're tired of being the one in the middle.
"The call about Crane came in and we left. I was with Dick and I don't think he would have looped me in if I wasn't already there. You're my friend. You're right. And that's why I didn't tell you." You state. "It's just...I wanted to protect you, I guess. I, uh, I've been dodging Molly's calls and texts, too because of it. I'm with you, I'm sick of losing people. So, I didn't tell you."
"Okay and I get that but this is what we do." Gar urges. "We help each other and we help other people even when it's dangerous. It's dangerous but you and Dick still go out there alone. At least if we're all working as a team, we have a better shot of making it home."
You chew the inside of your cheek and you think your heart might stop beating soon. "I fought him, ya know? And I know what that was like because even though I was high, I'm sober now and I remember every detail. And it fucking sucks that happened. I didn't want that to happen to you. I don't want him to have a bigger reason to target you." You shake your head and you shrug slowly and weakly. "He's not your fight, Gar."
"Yeah, he is." Gar urges. "Why wouldn't he be? He's my best friend."
"Because I owe it to him." You nearly yell. "I owe it to him to fucking save him because he saved me more than once and I never fucking told him. I missed it. I will never forgive myself for it. I have to save him this time."
"You don't have to do it alone." Gar's voice nearly breaks and he desperately wishes that's something you would understand. You never have to do this stuff alone. That's part of being a team and a family. "He's our friend. He's our family. We weren't here and that sucks! But he's not just yours to save. What if you can't do it alone?" Gar asks. "You're up against a freaky drug, Jason who I don't think you could really fight if you had to, and Scarecrow!"
"I know." You nod your head. "I don't know, okay? I know I can't do it alone. I'm sorry. I really am." You suck in a breath. And you're realizing you do a lot of things alone. It's as if it's easier to do them alone and only disappoint yourself, risk your own life than drag other people in the middle of it. "Really, I'm sorry. I was...scared if I tell you then you have to tell Dick and what if that got Jason killed, ya know? I don't know. I'm sorry though."
"You can tell me." Gar says. "I know you're worried about him but you can tell me and I won't tell Dick." Gar stresses. "Not if there's a risk it'll get Jason killed again."
"I know." You nod. "I'll try harder. I'm really sorry, Gar." You let out a breath. "I'm, uh, I'm gonna stay out of it today and take a breather. Might head to Excellent Gotham later, just so you know." You offer a soft smile.
"It's okay." Gar nods his head and offers a soft smile back. "You're going to be able to do that?"
"Yeah, I think better when I take a step back and I need to find a way to not be in the middle." You let out a soft chuckle. "While not doing it alone. But, if something happens..."
"I'll let you know." Gar's eyes widen. "Thank you." Gar clears his throat, rubbing the back of his neck. "That did help a little actually."
"Told you." You laugh softly as you get to your feet. "Want some food now? Yelling really works up an appetite."
"Yeah okay." Gar chuckles as you get up. "Oh! I can tell you about Blackfire."
"Blackfire?" You quirk a brow.
"Kory's sister. She was kind of tapping into Kory's head and she attacked me yesterday so we went to find Blackfire. Some scientist was holding her captive." Gar states excitedly.
"Um..." You stutter. "Well, we already have so much in common." You laugh softly. "But yeah, no, please explain literally all of that." You say eagerly as the two of you make your way to the kitchen.
Jason and Crane are standing in the washing area of an operating room, watching as the surgeon and the nurses prep a kid for something. Jason isn't sure why Crane made him come here. He said he wanted to show Jason something. It's important he understands what's going on and Jason's part in all of this. If Jason were being honest, he thinks Crane is full of shit this time and he just wants to get out of here. This feels wrong.
Then it gets worse.
A woman comes in holding a sword and starts slicing up the surgeon and nurses. Jason's eyes grow wide as his breathing stops. Blood sprays over the walls and window right in front of Jason. A nurse backs against the window with her hands up and begs for her life only for the woman to slice her, too. This isn't right. Why would Crane do this? They're doctors. They're helping some kid live and Crane has this woman come in....and kill them. She takes something with her before looking at the window and offering Crane a nod. Jason questions if all of that bloodshed was for that one thing. She didn't have to kill them. But, she did.
"You are expendable. If you're not happy here, you are replaceable. Remember what I said." Crane says as he faces Jason and that's when Jason realizes this whole thing might be to help Crane, but the show was a threat.
Crane is withholding the drug from him today. Jason finished the inhaler and then Crane refused to give him more until they came here. He's withholding it on purpose, let Jason's fear kick in just enough to keep him in line and make him desperate. And it's working.
He's scared again.
He's scared he'll end up like the surgeons and nurses. He's scared Crane is the one who's going to turn on him. Red Hood is supposed to be the face of the whole plan. That was the point of creating that alter ego. Crane wants Jason to get rid of you and just do whatever he says, when he says it. He wants him to divert from the original plan while telling him nothing about what's actually going on. He can't do that. That is his line.
Crane can try all he wants but no amount of drugs or manipulation will get him to cross that line. He might believe Crane sometimes about you, maybe he has a point sometimes. But, he won't kill you. You could have killed him at any point but you don't. You could have pushed him off a roof but you didn't. When Jason gets desperate he thinks of that because you're the one that stood on that ledge with him despite your fear of heights. You're the one that talked him down that day no one else and he owes you something for that alone. He won't go after you. He doesn't fucking care what Crane has to say about it, he won't do it.
The more he thinks about it, the more mad he gets. Crane thinks he's expendable, just like Bruce. But he's not. Why does everyone think he's so fucking expendable and replaceable? Why is nothing he does enough? He turned on all of his friends for Crane. He killed Hank for Crane. That's not enough to prove he's not replaceable and expensable? It's infuriating. He'll prove Crane wrong. If Crane wants to get to you, he'll have to go through him first. If Crane wants to wait to distribute the drug, that's a Crane problem, not a Jsaon problem. And he knows exactly what he can do to prove Crane he's not expendable and he can be trusted.
Later that night, you find your way to Excellent Gotham. The other Titans have been busy trying to locate Crane and Jason. You kept yourself busy with a scrapbook page while they did their own thing. It's not really all that nice distancing yourself alone. You figure Excellent Gotham at least provides dinner and you can talk to Tim, someone who doesn't know everything that's going on and doesn't come with the feeling of guilt. If Tim wants to talk about who the Titans are and Batman and Robin, that's fine, too because it's what you always did. Before everything. It'll feel normal anyway. At least Excellent Gotham is a good distraction and lets you take the breather you need. If you're going to be any help, you need the step back. You're too close to it all.
So, you stand at the counter with Tim on the other side as a large smile consumes your face, a take-out counter resting open in front of you.
"Okay, okay, why Bruce Wayne? Like, okay if Dick were Robin, how does that make Bruce Batman?" You question as Tim leans against the counter.
There's a genuine smile splitting your face as you point at him with your fork before going in for another bite. You've been here a few hours, checking in with Gar every so often, a way to try and keep your word to him. And this is helping. You might be in a heated discussion about who everyone is but it feels normal. It doesn't feel heavy anymore. It's just a normal conversation with a friend and it doesn't feel fucking sad. It just feels warm.
You don't remember the last time you felt warm.
"He's rich." Tim scoffs, a grin plastered across his face. "And why else would he let Dick go out there?"
"Unless he doesn't know. Bruce is a busy man. Dick being Robin doesn't mean Bruce is Batman and that's if Dick is Robin." You argue with a laugh. "And that means you'd also be wrong about Jason."
"No, no, I know I'm right about Dick and Jason." Tim pauses, the smiling falling. "Is...is that okay to talk about? Jason?"
"Yeah." You nod with a soft smile. "I, uh, I like talking about him."
"Okay well," Tim picks right back with enthusiasm. You find it amusing how into this he is. Especially since he's right. "He has to be Robin. He has the same fighting style. He walks the same way, how do you explain that?" Tim raises. "And Robin 1.0 and Robin 2.0 share the same height difference as Jason and Dick." Tim states. "If they're the Robins, Bruce has to be Batman."
"Unless!" You yell with a laugh, flinging your fork around. "Dick recruited Jason because they're brothers! Like I said, Bruce is busy. What if Batman is just some guy? Like Kick-Ass. Doesn't have to be some rich guy and maybe he's recruiting kids." You argue and truly, you're only defending Bruce because you think it's funny. And Dick would kill you if you outed fucking Batman.
"Batman can be Batman because he's rich." Tim laughs. "Uh, where has Bruce Wayne been? Where has Batman been? They disappeared the same time!" Tim laughs.
"Bruce is on business! Maybe there's a Justice League thing!" Your laugh reverberates through the restaurant. This feels like home. "How the fuck would I know where Batman is?" You put your fork back in your food. "And that's still assuming Dick is Robin! He's not. Explain Dick having a stick up his ass. Robin is more free-spirited!"
"Sorry to interrupt this very important conversation." Mr. Drake states, walking back to the counter. "But Tim, where is Stephen? Get him on the damn phone and find out where he is. Or you're stuck here all night."
"Shit." Tim mutters, checking his phone to see Stephen's shift started an hour ago. "Okay, hold on." Tim says. "And we'll continue this." Tim laughs as he calls Stephen on FaceTime. "Where are you, man? Your shift started over an hour ago."
"Priorities. My girl's parents are out of town. I'll be there in a second." Stephen says through a grin.
"Seriously? I could have plans." Tim protests.
"What plans?" You snort. "You're here with me arguing about Batman."
"Whatever. Just hurry up." Tim says as he hangs up and three men walk into the restaurant.
Tim is about to start talking all over again with even more enthusiasm and proof but he gets a look at your face, eying the men as they walk further into the restaurant. Maybe you’re just paranoid but they look like they’re up to something. It’s that their walk is steady, determined, but careless. Their eyes don’t land on the menu or Tim or Mr. Drake. They’re pointed at the register. And that’s when you see the reflection of metal sticking out of the last guy’s waistband. He looks to you and then it starts.
The throbbing kicks in like a freight train. It’s an armed robbery and they plan to go out swinging. You’re quick, rushing to Tim as they pull out their guns. Gunfire surrounds and encompasses the restaurant as you tackle Tim to the floor behind one of the counters.
Tim leans against the counter, ducking his head with every echo of a gunshot. His eyes are on you as you take a breath, as if to be debating what you’re going to do. And Tim knows you knew this would happen. You were running to him before they had their guns pulled. And his thoughts are confirmed when you look back to him with fury in your eyes.
It’s been less than five seconds but it gives you enough time to gather yourself. It’s all you need. These people are not going to walk in here and murder the people you care about. They picked the wrong restaurant on the wrong night during one of the worst months of your life.
You lift your hoodie, pulling a knife from the belt around your waist before you pop up from behind the counter.
“Ya fucking missed, assholes!” You yell over at them as the knife leaves your fingers, connecting with one of the guys’ eyes, embedding itself deep into his skull as he drops to the ground.
The throbbing starts again from the side and you duck down just before a shot comes your way. You take another deep breath before grabbing another two knives and throwing one, hitting one of their jugulars. The last one still standing locks eyes with you, his gun pointed right at you. He has this…grin, one you almost swear you’ve seen before but you’ve never seen him before this. His breathing is steady and he actually looks relaxed while you have your arm ready and aimed with a knife, right at him.
His pupils are blown.
And then your heart sinks because Crane is free on the streets and these guys came in here completely fearless. This one finds the whole damn thing amusing. Maybe he’s just high on something else, or maybe you’re right and Jason and Crane have moved to disruption. Excellent Gotham wouldn’t just be a coincidence.
“Give me the money and it’ll be over.” He says so easily you nearly roll your eyes.
“Kiss my ass.” You throw the knife, hitting this one in the arm with the gun.
Then you throw another one, hitting him just below the eye. He drops to the ground in a hard thump, leaving the restaurant a glass and gun-shelled mess. The smell of gun metal seeps into the air while an eery and dense silence consumes the place.
Tim calls your name not ten seconds after the last man drops. There’s panic in his voice, a sense of dread. You rush right over to him where he’s against the food counter now, his dad leaning against the side of it. Blood seeps through Tim’s hands are he tries to hold pressure on the wound. You kneel down, seeing Mr. Drake breathing heavily. Your eyes scan over him, quickly running over the crash course Jason gave you in gunshot wounds once.
“He’s been shot!” Tim yells, desperation in his eyes as he looks to you, silently pleading for help. He knows you're Bluejay. He can only assume you've had some sort of training in this. More than he's had.
You can feel the lump in your throat grow and the spinning of your head. Blood never really bothered you and it didn't with Dick. But, it was mostly dry with him earlier and this, right now, is fresh and active. Your bones feel like they're going to vibrate through your skin and your teeth grind together, trying to push every thought out of your mind that isn't first aid.
You have to help.
“Okay, move.” You urge as Tim pulls his hands away. Your hands are shakey as you lift Mr. Drake’s shirt, seeing the wound oozing and you think you might prefer knife wounds instead of gaping holes. “It’s gonna take the ambulance ten to fifteen to get here,” You rush out. “So, we–”
“Is that…?” Tim asks, cutting you off as his eyes are on the window. He only even looked up to see if he saw someone for help or Stephen but instead of help, he just saw one person.
Jason Todd.
You look up just in time to catch a glimpse of him before he turns around. This cannot really be happening right now. Jason Todd is supposed to be dead. It was all over Gotham City News. Bruce's newest adoptive son was killed in a freak accident. This is going to be a lot harder to explain to Tim and you want to explode. If he's here, you're right.
Why the fuck would he be here and why the fuck would he target the place you frequent?
“Okay, keep pressure.” You look to the door, seeing Stephen rush in. “Stephen, call an ambulance and grab some towels!” You yell as you get to your feet. “Stay here, hold pressure with the towels. I’ll be right back.” Your words nearly slur together as they come out as fast as your mouth will let them.
You rush outside where you see Jason, his back facing the open windows of the restaurant. You can’t believe this. Of all the things he could do, of all the damn people in Gotham he could target, he really came for you. For your friend and his family. You can’t fucking do it anymore. This is insane. If he wants to go after Dick, fine. Sibling rivalry bullshit taken to an extreme. But this? This is targeting innocent fucking people.
“Jason!” You seethe as you approach him. “What. The. Fuck!?” You scream, nearly vibrating from the anger coursing through your veins.
But then Jason faces you.
The anger washes away as your mouth opens, looking for words. There are dark circles under his eyes, a hollowed expression of the charism that used to radiate off of him. Maybe it’s the dark lighting but you swear the green in his eyes is pale, his skin is pale. He looks like a shell of who he used to be. He’s been acting like it but now…he really looks the part and you’re getting the idea that something really bad is happening.
Jason’s eyes are wide, tired, and exhausted but wide as he sees you come to a dead stop a few feet away from him. Why are you here? You’re not supposed to be here. You should be with Dick and the other Titans. He didn’t see you inside of the restaurant. Not before the gunfire or after. How did he miss you? It can’t be you. He just wanted to show Crane he was right. He wanted to prove he could do this. He chose Excellent Gotham on purpose, a way to show Crane it’s a threat at you without being a real threat. He knows you went to Tim for help. You weren’t supposed to be here.
Jason questions your name, closing the rest of the distance between the two of you.
His hands immediately come to your face for just a second and they send a chill down your spine. His fingers are like icicles and they're clammy, completely different than how they usually are and it breaks your heart. He keeps his right hand on your cheek, while the other hand goes to your waist. His eyes scan you over quickly, desperate to make sure you weren’t hurt in the gunfire. He didn’t take the drug again yet, he was saving it for after. He’s scared. Panicked. Desperate and guilty. You have blood on your hands and on your clothes. Can’t be yours. Not you.
Please not you.
“Are you hurt?” Jason rushes but his voice is weak and fragile, echoed in pain.
You eye him and you’re stuck between wanting to punch him and wanting to kiss him in hopes to make it all better again. He’s slipping so far away from you and you’re scared how far he’s willing to fall. Crane is doing something to him. He has to because he didn’t look like this last night. He didn’t even seem like he cared this much last night. Right at this exact moment, he feels like the old Jason. And you nearly get sucked right back into his gravitational pull.
“What…” The venom is gone from your voice. “What is he doing to you?” You ask, your hand comes to to his face. Not him. Not again.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Jason’s voice breaks.
“You know I’m always here. I was hanging out with Tim. Jason…what the hell is he giving you?” You look him over and you notice him favoring his leg. You haven’t seen him much since he’s been back from the dead but this is the first time since that first day you’re noticing it. You always notice it.
“Are you hurt?” Jason asks again and he can feel his heartbeat in his throat. He wants to spit his own heart right onto the ground in hopes it’ll stop the pain in his chest.
“No. I’m fine. It’s not mine.” You urge, catching him glancing at your free hand. “Jason, what is Crane giving you?”
Jason shakes his head, dropping his other hand to your waist. He misses you. He’s been so damn high all the time, he’s been able to ignore the longing in his chest. The one who always swore was his heart searching for yours. He could ignore it with ease but Crane has been keeping the drug close to his chest and this batch isn’t very good. He can feel it more tonight. It’s wearing off quicker. He can feel the worry for you and the care and the fact he fucking misses you. And the guilt for everything that’s led you both here.
“Same shit.” Jason grits his teeth. “You took it, you know.” He hates the words leaving his lips because they sound bitter and angry but it’s not at you. He just wants you to be okay and he wants to get the fuck out of here.
“No.” You shake your head, your voice soft. “Are you sure it’s the same drug? Jason, you look…is he withholding it from you?” His skin is cold and clammy under your fingers and his hair is flatter than usual.
You’ve seen it, what withdrawal looks like. You saw it on the streets and that’s what Jason looks like. Why would Crane do that? He’s insane and he doesn’t actually give a shit about Jason but Jason has been doing all of his bidding. You figure Jason is here with the drug. That’s why he just stood here while Excellent Gotham was attacked, he probably gave it to them. Surely, that has to be part of the plan. But, if that’s the case, then why does Jason look like he’s been thrown headfirst into withdrawal? And why would Crane be doing this?
“Stay the fuck out of it. I have it. It’s the same shit. It’s fine.” Jason grits his teeth. He wants to break. He wants to lose it for the first time since that first day on the roof with you. It feels like it’s been months since and it’s only been a week. And you look at him with worry and fear and you have always had a way with getting Jason to breathe. But, he can’t afford that right now. Not you. “Please.”
"It's fine?" You spit. "You look terrible, Jason. It's not fucking fine."
"Yeah, it is." Jason removes his hand from your waist and digs in his coat pocket, pulling out a full inhaler. "Fine." He wiggles the inhaler for you to see, the liquid sloshing around in the clear canister.
After all of that, he's going to wave the drug around as if it's fucking easy. He's going to stand here and pretend like it's all fine and well when he almost got you and Tim shot? He's actually lost his damn mind now. If he's going to stick with Crane despite everything, fine. You've stuck by his side since day one all those months ago. Fine. If it's going to be like that, fine because you can't take it anymore. You love him more than anything on this planet but this is not fucking fine. He's not fine and he has got to realize that.
"Fine!?" You shake your head, eyes bugging out of your head in disbelief. "Get off me." You shove his hand off of you as you take a step back. It's not fine. None of this is fucking fine. He's not fine. That drug isn't fine. Working with Crane isn't fine. Doing what he just did isn't fucking fine. It doesn't matter what his reason is. "You...you just got Tim's dad shot. Do you know that? What have the Drakes ever done to you?" You look at him with disgust. "You could have gotten Tim shot, my friend. You could have gotten me shot!" Your voice cracks as you yell at him, your arm flying out to the side. You might be worried about him but you're not going to let him almost kill your friends because you're worried about him.
"That wasn't the plan!" Jason screams in desperation, his words clawing at the hope for you to believe him. "You went to Tim, didn't you!? I know you suck at figuring out codes! Tim is a genius. I just wanted to scare him!" Jason defends his stance, leaving out Crane wanting Jason to target you. If you knew this was a fake threat, maybe that'd be worse.
"Bullshit! Bull-fucking-shit! You gave them the drug! That's why you're here! You did this! You knew what would happen and you did it anyway!" You bark back. "You just wanted to scare him!? Then do it your damn fucking self, Jason! You just didn't want the blood on your damn hands so I couldn't blame you! But you did this!" You point a finger at him and Jason isn't sure he's seen you so mad and...disappointed.
"You weren't supposed to be here! I didn't think they'd shoot anyone!"
That's not a lie. He didn't think. He just did it. He knew they'd go in there and rob them. Maybe they'd have to close down for a little bit. For safety. He didn't think about anything else. Thanks to the drug Jason claims is helping him and curing him.
You don't fucking get it. It doesn't matter that you weren't supposed to be here. That's a load of shit anyway. You're always here. Tim and his family are innocent, regardless on if Tim helped you or not. He doesn't know anything, not for sure. Jason's reasoning is flawed and it's cruel. It fucking hurts.
"Tim is my fucking friend! I don't care I wasn't supposed to be here! You....fuck." You let out a desperate groan, tilting your head back. At some point, enough is enough and he isn't even taking responsibility for this. You just can't do this anymore. You look back to him, eyes turning glassy. "I was fucking fine with you being a crime lord or whatever, taking out those fucks hurting people. But this?" You point at the restaurant. "These are innocent people! Hank was innocent! Dick is innocent! I can't fucking stand here and watch you kill innocent fucking people! And innocent fucking people that I care about and that care about me!" You say it all so quickly, you barely register what it would mean.
No no no no no. He fucked it all up. Like he always does. He just ruined it all. Everything is gone. Everything is going to shit. It's all messed up. He did all of this. How did he even get here? You can't walk away from him. You always swore you wouldn't. Please, not you, too.
You're all he has left.
"What's that supposed to mean, huh?" Jason asks, jerking his up quickly as he tries to give the question some bite.
You let out a heartbroken laugh that's mixed with a cry as you look to the sky and hope a blackhole will open up just to swallow you whole. You have no choice.
You have thrown him life preserver after life preserver, and all he ever had to do was hold on and you'd reel him back to safety. But, all Jason has done is chew right through them and wonder why he's still drowning. You can't keep trying to save someone who doesn't want to be saved. He was always your lifeline but you were clearly, never his.
"You win, Jason." Your voice is defeated as Jason's brows furrow. The lump in your throat grows so large you can barely get the words out. "You win. I can't do it anymore. I'm done. I can't." You shake your head as a tear falls down your cheek. The words taste like blood-covered glass, killing you with every cut and slice.
If you're always on his side, then what he's doing can't be that bad. If you're always on his side, defending him, why would he ever stop? You've tried everything else to get him home and none of it is enough. And it is killing you, knowing this is it. There is one last option because something's gotta give. Maybe if he hits rock bottom, having no one, maybe it'll turn him around. It's the only thing left to do because begging him doesn't work, loving him doesn't work, fighting him doesn't work, arguing doesn't work. Nothing else works and you hate it because you don't mean it, not even a little bit but you have no other options and you're devasted by what he is right now.
So, you say the one thing you can't take back.
A last-ditch effort, knowing he may never forgive you.
"I'm giving up on you. You get what you always wanted. I can't do it. I have tried and tried, but I can't do it anymore." You give him a tired shrug as you dodge his eyes.
If you see the heartbreak in his eyes, you'll take it back and you can't do that. If Jason always has you on his side, why would he turn things around when he hasn't yet? You could have died two nights in a row. He is actively targeting the Titans. You can't meet his eyes because he is targeting innocent people. It might be under Crane's control but, until he gets clear of him and gets clean, this has to be on Jason. Jason has to be the one to deal with the consequences and you will never forgive yourself for it.
Jason's world stops. Not you. Not another person. Why does he always do this? How did he even get here? You were never supposed to be involved. He should have included you from the start. He almost rips the inhaler from his pocket and hits it, right in front of you, anything to get rid of this pain in his chest. It's as if his heart just exploded through his cage, shattering every bone on its way out. How are you doing this?
You're all he has left.
Jason shakes his head, fighting back tears of agony and anger. "You're just like everyone else." Jason's voice cracks.
You knew it was coming but something about it makes you want to burst into tears.
"No." You shrug because he should know how badly this hurts you, too. This is the last thing you want to say to him, ever. "I'm not. I am not like everyone else. Don't ever say that shit again. You have done this. You came after my friend. My innocent friend, Jay." Your voice cracks as you try desperately to hold back your sobs. "All you have done since coming back from the dead, is hurt me." You pause, taking a ragged breath and Jason's face falls. Is that true? "And I have done everything to protect you. To be by your side. And you have done nothing but hurt me. So, no. I am not like everyone else. You just gave me no choice, Jay." You're quick to wipe a few tears away as your voice is weak and soft, lacking all fire and bite it had just seconds earlier.
He can't do it. He could try to make up for this. He could try to explain. He could just quit. That would do the job just fine. But, he doesn't. The heartbreak kicks in with anger and he just wants to be spiteful just like he always is as if fighting the person is going to change their mind. He knows it won't change yours but he does it anyway because he's hurt and the hurt has nowhere to go besides the open and cold air of this soulless city.
"You swore you never would but look at you now!" A lump grows in Jason's throat. "You said you don't break promises. Crane was right about you." Jason sneers as he closes the distance between you, looking down at you but he's not threatening or intimidating. You see the heartbreak in his eyes. You will feel guilty about this in every life you live.
Jason Todd has always deserved better.
"Okay." You shake your head slowly. "Sure, Crane doesn't know me. But you do. You know me. And you know I'd never be giving up if you left me another option. But, sure, believe Crane. Fuck it, right?" You scoff and all you want to do is cry. Or break every bone in your body because maybe that would be less painful. "I'm sick of losing my family." Your voice is quiet, barely a whisper. "All I ever wanted was you. And you died." You shrug your shoulders, keeping your eyes on him. "And all I wanted was you." You say quietly and Jason wants to shatter, his breath catching in his throat as his vision starts to go blurry. "And still, all I want is you but...I don't know what else to do."
You can see your breaths mixing together in the winter air between you. Everything led you both here and all you both want to do is take it back. The winter air chisels at your face and hands, hacking away at every hope you could have had. Jason's eyes are locked on yours, dissolving into heartbreak and you think this is what hypothermia must feel like.
But, Jason is too scared of what will happen if he does take it all back. He's still under Crane's manipulation. He's too stubborn. And you're terrified what will happen if you back down. If you back out of it, who will he target next?
"So, that's just it? I didn't mean to hurt anyone in there. It's not my fault." Jason huffs and the anger starts to evaporate as the heartbreak comes in the form of agony and devastation.
"Sure." You nod and you don't want him to feel like he's trapped with Crane. You have to give up because that's your option. But, you can offer him someone else and maybe that'll be enough. This all boils to Dick anyway. "The same way your drug isn't Crane's fault. Look, I'm done. I can't do it. Dick though, he believes in you still. So, if you want to come home, call him. Don't contact me. If you get clean, then you can. Until then, don't call me. Don't text me. Nothing. And stay the fuck away from the Drakes, Molly, and Gar." You try to hide the quiver in your voice but Jason catches it.
"Please, don't walk away." Jason says softly and you nearly collapse into the ground. His words are like knives aiming right for your heart. How does he do that?
You rest a hand on his cheek. "I can't leave it like that so, I'll always love you, Jay but...I want the old you back." You nod as your hand falls from his cheek. You turn around, going to leave him but you hear Jason take a few slow steps after you before they stop.
Jason's voice cracks as he says your name, his version becoming so blurry he can't see. "I...I'm sorry." Jason says quietly, looking to the ground as a tear falls from his eyes. "Don't...please," He looks back up to you. "Don't give up on me. I have a plan and it's all gonna work out. This was just an accident."
You swear he's never going to forgive you for this. This is the hardest thing you've ever done. Even if he understands one day, he'll never forgive you and it's the hardest pill to swallow.
"Yeah, I'm sure it was." You nod softly. "I can't save you. You don't want to be saved, not yet. You have to save yourself, now, Jay. And for what it's worth, I..." You pause watching tears come to Jason's eyes. "I love you, Jay." You nod your head as you sniffle. "And I am so fucking sorry I couldn't save you. From Deathstroke, from the Titans, from the Joker...from Bruce. And from Crane. I'm sorry I was another person that let you down and I'm really fucking sorry I'm walking away." You shake your head as you lick your lips. "But I don't think you'll get it through your head if I'm in your corner. I've tried everything to stay." You suck in a breath as a few tears fall from your eyes. "I tried to stay for once because being with you was worth it to me. But I don't think it's helping you so...get clean and we can talk. The second you get clean, I'll be here." You nod once as the ambulance finally starts to arrive. "Those are for us. You should leave." You turn back around and head back inside of the building, leaving Jason in the cold.
How could he fuck up this bad? He just wanted to show Crane he was right. He just wanted to prove himself and instead, he's the one standing out here all alone. Guilt and shame gnawing at the last good parts of him. And he just can't do it anymore. The pain and the fear and guilt and everything about it. It's too much and too heavy and maybe he's a little spiteful. So, he puts the inhaler to his lips and takes a hit.
They said it was a skinny batch but he didn't realize it would feel like this. It's numbing a lot of everything but not enough and it all still feels too heavy. When things get heavy, he always went to you but he just fucked that up. It's his fault it's heavy. This is all his fault and you're supposed to be on his side but you're not. He's all alone again and all he has is Crane. It's not supposed to be like this. How the fuck did he even get here?
All he wanted was to be somebody to someone. To be enough.
Back in the restaurant, the paramedics are getting Mr. Drake into the ambulance, rushing him off to Gotham General. Tim watches with sad and hollowed eyes, his hands are covered in blood and his shirt is soaked. You squeeze your eyes shut, looking away before you shake it off. You can't lose it over Tim's dad. That's not fair.
"Do...do you need a ride?" You clear your throat as the ambulance drives away. "I have my bike. I can take you." You offer with a steady and firm nod.
"Uh...yeah," Tim looks at his hands, something lost in his voice. "That...that would be great. Thanks."
"Of course." You nod, reaching down for this hand. Your hands have been covered in blood enough times to almost seem normal. "Come on."
The two of you head outside to your bike and you wonder how you're supposed to explain this. Dick talked to you months ago, when you first came to the tower. It was all about vigilante life and what it entailed. It would be making hard decisions but knowing those hard decisions would be for the greater good. It's not killing people because enough people hurt and kill innocent people enough. Vigilantes, heroes, don't do that. It was about keeping the identities of everyone a secret to protect yourself and them. You've never had much of an issue keeping secrets.
You hold your own close to your chest, lock them away where even you forget they exist sometimes. But, those secrets aren't these. Those secrets only ever hurt you, only ever made you feel alone. These secrets that you're forced to keep hurt everyone you care about. They hurt Molly because you couldn't tell her about Bluejay or Robin or Jason or Red Hood. You and Jason would bail on her and you'd both would show up riddled with bruises and aches and pains. It hurt her because it worried her. It hurt her because Jason died and she never got to know him as Robin, the part of him that meant the world to him. She only got to know a portion of him.
But telling Molly meant telling her about Dick and Bruce and the other Titans. It wasn't your secret to tell because it would out all of them. And she still doesn't know he's alive because telling her means leaking something Jason wanted to keep a secret and that's going to hurt her even more.
This hurts Tim because his dad was just shot and he just saw Jason Todd who's supposed to be dead. Now, he's going to think his friend is lying to him about your boyfriend being dead. Lying about an alter ego is one thing, lying about someone dying is cruel. Even if you weren't close.
And it hurts Gar because Gar ends up in the crossfire of everything. He's the one up worrying when you and Dick don't come home. He's the one scared for what Jason is going to do because you couldn't tell him about the drug in order to protect Jason and keep his secrets for him. And then there's Jason.
You can't tell Jason what's going on with the Titans because of Crane. You can't tell him everything you want to desperately scream from the rooftops. That you're sorry and you don't mean it and it hurts you, too. You can't tell him you're scared Crane is going to snap and kill him. It'll drive the wedge further between you. All of these secrets are piling on top of each other, slowly building to the tallest building in Gotham and it's only a matter of time before the whole thing collapses. All it does is hurt everyone you care about. That doesn't seem very heroic.
"Here, take my helmet." You offer the helmet to him once you reach your bike.
"Uh, no it's okay." Tim shakes his head. You're driving.
"Put the helmet on." You say sternly as you mount your bike, sending a glare to Tim.
Something about the look you give him makes Tim grab the helmet. "Right, okay." Tim nods and puts the helmet on before he gets on the back.
"Hold on." You state before Tim holds onto your waist.
You drive to Gotham General, pulling up to one of the entrances without blocking the ambulance entrance. Tim gets off and takes off the helmet, handing it back to you. He knows you know something. And if he's being honest, he's annoyed you didn't tell him. You aren't that close but...his dad just got shot and Jason fucking Todd knew about it. It was a hit. He stood outside and did nothing. Why wouldn't his own girlfriend know he's alive and planning a hit? You have acid generation and combat clairvoyance while also being an excellent marksman. Tim swears it can't be some coincidence you were there tonight.
"I'm really sorry about your dad." You state softly, holding the helmet on your thigh.
"Thanks." Tim looks back at the hospital. "That was Jason Todd outside, wasn't it?"
You nod softly and you know you can't deny that. Tim saw him "Yeah."
"I thought he was dead." Tim questions as his voice holds hints of venom, something you haven't heard before.
"Yeah." You nod again and you hate yourself for tonight. For everything. "Don't, uh, don't tell anyone. It's a long story." You hang your head, dodging the look Tim is surely giving you.
"You knew?" Tim scoffs, looking at you with annoyance and disappointment. Why the hell would you let everyone believe he were dead? "He faked his death or?"
You look back to him and all this sucks. You're sick of lying and hiding secrets. It's tiring and lonely. It's so fucking lonely.
"No." You shake your head. "He, uh...he really, uh...he really died." You suck in a shakey breath before you shake your head quickly. "I-I can't tell you anything else." You let out a bitter scoff. "That's shit and I know that. I'm sorry."
"Did he target us because of you? Because of the Titans?" All Tim wants is some clarity. There had to be reason. Tim helped you with a code. That's what it was.
"Not a Titan." You sigh with exhaustion, lacking any and all fight you'd normally have with the statement. "I don't know why." You lie but you're sick of this. Keeping these secrets is making you out to be the bad guy with everyone and you're not. You're just trying to protect everyone you care about so, you're not going to tell him in so many words but you're not going to cover it up either. "Um...yeah...maybe it was because of me but uh...I, uh, I never...I never thought he'd figure it out or....or come after you. I should have left you out of it."
Tim nods bitterly and he wants to understand but his dad could have been killed. "That code, it wasn't a murder mystery thing, was it?" Tim asks and you just suck in a breath, not offering him anything else. Technically, you aren't lying and technically you aren't telling him anything. He already knows. You don't need to so he nods. "I saw what you did. You knew they were going to start shooting. I was right."
You shake your head, looking to the sky and it's gloomy as always but it looks like it might snow. You scoff looking back to Tim. "I saw the guns."
"Bullshit, you know," Tim gestures a hand to you. "You're supposed to be a hero, like Batman and Robin but..." Tim shakes his head.
"Fuck Batman." You mutter as your jaw clenches.
"You're supposed to help people." Tim says sternly.
The lump in your throat grows and you bite your cheek so hard the taste of iron floods your mouth. It's not supposed to be this hard. And why does helping people have to be so black and white? Good and bad? It's not. Whether anyone likes it or not, the guys you want to target and take out permanently and the guys Jason was going after, that was helping. Making sure they can't hurt anyone else ever again. That's helping. Dick thinks he can help all of the Titans and he fucks up sometimes which gets people hurt, but he still helps. Sometimes people get hurt and that sucks but does that really make everyone else irrelevant? Does that really make everything else wrong? Or the motive and reasoning?
Helping people shouldn't be black and white, good and bad, morally good and morally evil. There needs to be a grey area because you have people like the Joker who needed to be killed for the greater good of everyone in Gotham. And you have people like Jason who isn't in his right mind and is being manipulated but should still be helped. It sucks Tim's dad got shot and you will regret going to Tim for help forever, but you're helping him by not telling him anything, even if you want to and even if he doesn't see it that way.
"I am literally begging you to please go inside and leave this alone, Tim." You force the words through gritted teeth. "I can't fucking tell you anything else, okay? I want to. If it were up to me, I'd fucking tell you what's going on but I can't. It's not my shit to say." You look to the ground and then back up to Tim, rolling your shoulders softly. "So, I'm sorry." You shake your head, giving up and cluing him enough. Technically, you're not admitting to anything, just admitting that you know what's going on.
"You just confirmed it." Tim says softly. "I'm gonna figure out what's going on and--"
"Tim! Please, go be with your dad. Trust me." You practically beg him because if he digs into this, what's going to stop Jason from actually going after him? Tonight might have been a threat or whatever, but at this point, you don't know if he would actually go after someone like Tim. You need him to just take what you're saying and understand it.
"That's my dad."
"I know and I know it sucks. I get it which is why I'm telling you to go be with him." You say softly as your voice cracks.
Tim nods softly, understanding why you're saying it. "Thanks for the ride."
"Just...text me about your dad, okay?" You ask. "I'm really fucking sorry."
"I will." Tim nods because he's beginning to think maybe this isn't on you. He might know who you are but you aren't as cut and dry as Batman and Robin always were. You're more morally grey and maybe it is more complicated because it involves Jason. You look terrified. "Thanks for saving me."
You nod quickly. "Of course." You say softly. "Good luck." You suck in a breath, popping the helmet on and taking off.

this is a very unpopular opinion lol but i personally think they shouldn’t have made dick as bruce’s son. dc should have just resolved their problems with them being apart as much as they can in gotham & bludhaven respectively and then fix their dynamic slowly to become healthier and then make bruce & dick as brothers instead, bcs the crux of their problems was them being equals thus being brothers would have made their standing & dynamic more even & equals. (again tho this is unpopular opinion)
I completely agree!!
I don't think they should've made dick Bruce's son. Actually the son thing I guess is fine, but there's no need to emphasize it so much because it doesn't fit their dynamic.
Tale of The Teen Titans Issue #50
Dick's adoption, the way I think of it, is unnecessary.
Up until this point neither of them had even considered a father and son relationship. Their guardian and ward relationship only came up when Dick was in danger of being adopted away and Bruce starts begging and pleading about it.
Batman (1940) Issue #439
Dick says himself, "He could never be my father. I mean, I don't want another father."
Dick knew that Bruce loved him unconditionally and he was happy with that.
That's the second time when the circus wanted him but the first time, his blood relatives wanted to take Dick away from Bruce.
Batman (1940) Issue #20
"You can't take Dick away now! Not after all these years! He's like a son! I won't let you!"
Batman (1940) Issue #20
Alfred: "M'lord...I mean your honor...I've never seen Mr. Wayne deny the young lad anything! He fair worships the boy!"
(I think Alfred's still hasn't let the chips thing go.)
Bruce: "Dick is like my own son! I've even changed my own will so that in case of my death, Dick will get my entire fortune! Your honor, I...I love that boy! Please don't take him from me!"
Dick: "A fella couldn't want a better friend!"
Bruce's relationship with Dick is complicated ranging from son to partner to brother to everything in between. Why not add Mother in it too?!
But it wasn't like Bruce's relationship with Jason and I think that makes all the difference. By the time Jason came around, Bruce and the authors finally realized how to write a father-son relationship. Up until then, Dick was just everything for Bruce and since he was written that way, the authors let him stay that way.
The adoption scene and Dick asking why Bruce didn't adopt him...here's an anology. Suppose a kid goes to school and earns a A on every test and the teacher says "good job!" and they both move on. 10 years later another kid comes along and they get an A too. The teacher has now grown in experience and wants to facilitate growth, so they have now started giving every kid that earned an A a gold star sticker on their paper. This kid takes it home to show their older brother who had that same teacher 10 years ago and the brother comments, "Oh, when I went there, she didn't give out stickers!" But now make it about family.
That's what Dick and Bruce's adoption is. The adoption paper is the gold star. Was it needed? No. Does it make people feel better? Yes.
But I don't like this formally making Dick Bruce's son thing. Sure Dick feels better about it but it was pointless and actually takes away from what their relationship really is.
In the comics, Bruce's behavior toward Jason is more parental than his was to Dick. It was more of a "let me teach you" and "ok, so this is how I do it" with Bruce and Jason. It's a teaching moment of father to son guidance. Dick and Bruce's comics were more "this is what I think" and "I see what you're thinking and I'm going to add on to that" relationship. It was a we're both going to do about 50/50 of the work.
Also Jason came to Bruce at a time when Bruce was stable and knowledgable. Dick came to Bruce at a time when Bruce was literally falling apart. If he hadn't met Dick, he would've killed himself from how reckless he was being. Finding Dick, he saved himself too.
Canonically, Dick is described as a foil to Bruce - the light to Bruce's darkness. He acted patiently listened, worked, and understood Bruce. Bruce shared his emotional burden with Dick in a way he was afraid and careful not to do with the others.
He's still doing it.
Batman (2011) Issue #14
They're not acting like father and son, they're acting like partners.
"Oh, but the kids..."
"It's for the kids! Do this for me please."
Dick as Robin in his later years even screams at Bruce during an argument, "I'm not your son. I'm your partner."
This excessive parentification of Bruce and Dick's relationship, it's not how they function. DC somehow thinks that their loves needs definition. That it needs clear boundaries to show that Bruce loves Dick but the truth is, the devil's in the details and their relationship is riddled with them. You don't need to tell your best friend you love them, they just know. Both of you do. And DC thinks the only way to tell your best friend you love them is to tell them that which is not true.
That said, their problems only arose because Bruce was overly attached to Dick so I don't think he would've been able to let go without speaking to him. I mean, he did get captured (purposefully?) and expect Dick to just come save him just so they could start talking again during Jason's robin era and I don't know how they would fix their problems but I agree that they shouldn't be quarantined into a tiny, constrictive father and son box. They way they act around each and the demands both of them have of the other to act a certain way isn't how a father expects a son to be or a son expects a father to act. I'm not saying they aren't father and son, I just believe they're more complicated and involved than just that.

hi! ^_^
i was wondering if you could help me get into dc comics! i’ve always leaned more towards the movies/shows, video games, and fanon content.
if you have any reading guides at your disposal, i’d really appreciate them! even just naming a few starter comics would be cool.
i hope you don’t mind me asking this of you! i discovered your acc on tiktok and your edits made me wanna get more into the comics when i was formerly disinterested. your characterization takes are also pretty spot on!! :D
thank yew
IM GONNA CRY AND PUKE THANK YOU OMG getting into dc is not difficult but its also pretty challenging depending on which era you wanna read and which family you wanna get into. unfortunately im mainly a batfam-head so i have mostly suggestions about batfamily characters, i hope you wont mind :3
batman: year one is a must in my eyes but i dont see batman: ego advertised nearly as much and it pains me, its a very interesting read on the duality of bruce wayne and batman and an excellent analysis on purpose and motivations
after that, if you wish to continue reading batman related things, i suggest reading about the robins!
batman: year three (batman #436 to #439) serves as a retelling of dick and bruce’s first encounter and its the most used retelling, since it also introduces tim drake but i digress
year ones are your friends! robin: year one and robin/batgirl: year one are stories you should check out but, for the love of christ, keep AWAY from nightwing: year one. i dont know what they were thinking there. if you liked reading these, dick grayson could be the guy for you but, warning i guess, he has lots to read about so make sure to find a good reading guide for him.
after dick quits and becomes nightwing, jason todd is next and luckily the easiest read since he didnt do much except for dying (rip). he is super straight forward, batman: #408 to #425 and detective comics: #568 to #582. a good read for jason and bruce is also batman: the cult!
alas jaybin must die and so here comes a death in the family, batman: #426 to #429. im not a red hood fan personally but batman: under the red hood is kinda a must read. if you liked jason todd, i’m really sorry you’ll never see good writing again
after a death in family, you can read a lonely place of dying when that freak tim drake appears, batman: #440 to #442 alternating with new titans #60 and #61. TOOOOO GOOD. sorry.
tim drake is kinda complicated because the 90s were annoying but you can read detective comics: #618 to #621 and then after batman: #455 to #457 for the important things and him becoming robin most of all. after that the three robin miniseries, robin (1991), robin: the joker’s wild and robin: cry of the huntress are next and finally theres a big one, robin (1993)
if you like tim drake i plan on making a proper reading guide #soon so stay tuned i guess LOL. you cant have tim without stephanie brown, which kinda appears shortly after tim’s initiation as robin. detective comics: #647 to #649 are her origin story, showcase ‘95 #5 is a really underrated stephanie story and then you can just read robin (1993) since she is in there a lot.
i have a stephanie brown reading list ready to be reposted so trust it will be soon! finally damian wayne :3 read batman: son of the demon since its a way better origin for damian over the racist ‘talia is abusive and a r@pist’ morrison retcon.
damian is a really difficult character to get into cause unfortunately most of his stories are racist dogshit but the good stuff is GOOD. robin: son of batman will change your life 5ever. another fun read is robin (2021). to get hooked on daminika.
on the topic of batman’s supporting cast lets go with the batgirls. acknowledged as batgirls, we have barbara gordon tho she is largely more interesting as oracle! i wish you no harm so please don’t read the killing joke, it’s such a lame story and downright misogynistic towards babs.
just let it know that (sigh.) the joker left barbara gordon in a wheelchair. batman: chronicles #5 is genuinely one of the best stories ever, will make you weep and choke and die. after that, birds of prey (1999)’s yuriful antics will charm you.
the current batgirl, cassandra cain, is currently having an ongoing serie! her origin story is in batman: #567 and detective comics: #734. warning: she appears right in the middle of an event called batman: no man’s land so i suggest looking up batman: no man’s land reading guides if its too confusing for context. im really sorry. after that PLEASE read batgirl (2000). too good.
stephanie cheated and managed to be both robin and batgirl so you should read batgirl (2009) which is fairly context-less? or better, they explain most of the context in-comic so it should be fine.
these are the main batfam characters but, throughout reading, you might meet some new and maybe lesser known characters like azrael, huntress, anarky etc. etc.
a read that kinda exists outside all this is also gotham: academy which is quite new reader friendly and genuinely very fun.
hope you have fun :)
#THIS LONG ASS LIST BREH IM SORRY#i hope you enjoy#batman#dc comics#reading recs#batfam reading recs

Time is running out
Pair: bat family x reader sister
Summary:Based on an old edit I discovered. Batman gets kidnapped and his children are trying to solve the mystery of his disappearance.
Warnings: blood, injury, trauma, cursing, triggering language
Edit: credits to them creator (the picture underneath my edit) https://youtu.be/pRuMwQAIVbI
I think I'm drowning, asphyxiated
I felt my heart skip a beat and my breath coming out shallow, I couldn't take my gaze away from the CCPD footage that was sent to the Bat-computer. Suddenly I felt like a little girl again. Watching something a child shouldn't have to witness, I felt a hand squeeze my shoulder pull me closer, I could tell it was Jason, it was too tight considering what we were seeing. He pulled me closer to him. There was silent in the cave, we were frozen, only our breath echoed.
"We have to trace it…" it was Dick's voice. "Tim Barb, do something" he exclaimed approaching Damian whose eyes were stuck on the screen as well.
I wanna break this spell that you've created, Your something beautiful, a contradiction
Bruce was laying still, many open wounds flooding with blood, we couldn't sense any movement, or see if he was breathing his suit devices that connected him to the Bat computer were destroyed as a laugh was heard in the background. It wasn't from the camera, I came to our comms… I knew that laugh, I despised that laugh… But the same time, I had so many memories of him, unfortunately good.
"Joker?" Damian asked and looked at us, his voice was shaking, I really didn't see that coming.
"Close enough, it's his creation, Jerome… this is Jerome. I would recognize his laugh anywhere…" I explained, I felt eyes on me, they knew it wasn't a pleasant subject for me, it hadn't taken me time to get over the fact that I was used by a psycho.
"How can it be Jerome, (Y/N), he died in case you do not remember…" Jason demanded looking down to me.
I wanna play the game, I want the friction
"I do not know Jason!" I exclaimed and swallowed "But this. Is. Jerome" I spoke and turned on my comm
"What the hell do you even want!" I exclaimed in the communication.
The laugh kept going without responding to my question, Barbara and Tim were typing, Tim signed to keep him laughing and talking so they could track down the signal. "What can be touched but can't be seen?" He asked me, it was his voice as I couldn't comprehend what was happening, this was a riddle I realized.
"Future, what of the future" I asked again trying to sound tremendous and firm like Batgirl would but miserably failed…
"It is a crime if attempted but not if committed" he spoke again, there was static in between, I couldn't make out an answer I was looking at Jason and Dick panicking internally. "Tik tak, clocks ticking. Ten… nine…" he started the countdown. We had no idea what would happen if he reached zero…
"Suicide!" I exclaimed out of the blue holding in my breath. The boys were staring at me, and so was I.
He laughed for a few seconds "What can be touched but can't be seen?" He asked me again and I let out a shaky breath. I was trying to ponder, think I couldn't make out a word, henstarted counting down again, and then his laugh became louder and louder.
"Now you brought this to the big bat" Jerome laughed, "Who makes it, has no need of it. Who buys it, has no use for it. Who uses it can neither see nor feel it. What is it?" He asked finally asked and I felt my eyes tear as i knew the answer. "You have about an hours before he runs out of air" there was another serious voice speaking now.
"He will bury him alive" Dick realized, I don't think either if them could tell the voice change.
"Tell where he is you son of a bitch" Jason yelled loudly, snatching the comm from my hands. The comm stopped working.
"Do we have anything?" He asked and turned at Oracle and Red Robin.
"I will have the location of the comm in some minutes" Tim informed us and I looked around breathing shallow.
"I got him killed, if the riddle was correct the second time, we would know more of Bruce's whereabouts…" I spoke in realization.
You will be the death of me
"Hey hey no, (Y/N)" Jason approached me and Dick did too.
"Yes… yes I did…" I yelled at him
"(Y/N) Don't do that;" Dick yelled while I was speaking
"He is going to suffocate to death and it's all on me" I yelled pushing him back
"Guys both shut up" Jason made an effort while all three of us were yelling at each other.
"SHUT IT " Barbarian yelled "The footage was recorded half an hour before it was sent, it wasn't a Livestream we have serious work to do." She exclaimed pulling us back to reality "Bruce is already buried based on what Valeska said" she pointed out as she looked at me.
"How can we know that he was speaking truthfully?" Damian finally spoke, his voice had eased from before.
"We don't, the tracking of the comm is being fulfilled at the moment" Tim replied and sighed
"It is not Valeska, I mean the voice is, but the last part, his voice changed… can't we like, rehear it" I asked and she put it on screen. I approached and dragged then recording of the comm to the end. "Here. Listen carefully it was the moment we were shouting" I explained and I sat down at the recording. Dick was above having his hand reassuringly on my shoulder, I was grateful for my brothers, and for Barb, and Steph.
"You are right" Barbara confirmed it and there was a notification sound. "We have coordinates, get ready and leave, I'll be having your back, sending them to you now it's in Iceberg Lounge" she informed us.
"To sum up we have Riddle and possibly Clayface…" I spoke as I approached my belt tied it around my waste as I put on the hood and then jogged to one of the motorbikes to drive as Tim did the same.
Jason cursed under his breath and sighed "I am driving, decide who is coming with" he tried to announce but none of us fell for it.
"Pick a ride Todd" I winked at him wearing my helmet, I knew he would ride with me, he had no issue with Tim but let's not get too touchy here. He was concerned about me, Jerome was a trigger for me.
"Okay plan. We need two teams, one to visit the Riddler at the narrows and one to penguin" Oracle spoke up on the comms "Red Hood Batgirl go to the Narrows, Spoiler will be expecting you there, Red Robin, Robin and Nightwing iceberg lounge, Alfred came here we are working together." She explained.
"Alright Copy Oracle" I spoke and turned over the direction and drove. Jason's hands tensed on the back of the bike. I saw it on the mirrors.
"Splitting up the communications. Red Hood, Batgirl and Spoiler you are with me" she spoke "spoiler is expecting you outside the old Thompkins infirmary" she added.
"Wooh feels good being the man of the team" Jason commented as the motorcycle roared throughout the streets of the bad-prestiged alleys.
"Out of the four of us you are the one who behaves most ladylike so…" I pointed out and braked as Spoilered sank out of the darkness on a nearby alley, her iodes suit gleaming at the street lights as well as her blonde curls.
"It's true Red Hood, you are not the man here" Steph poked him and he sighed ready to respond but he was interrupted.
"Spoiler, did you see the video?" Oracle asked.
"Positive, I also thought of Clayface, Valeska can't be alive, besides there was a voice alteration." She remarked and looked at us.
"Let's go in then" I signed and looked at the building moving in from the front door as Spoiler and Red Hood would go from the rooftop, we could use the element of surprise. It was dirty and the humidity was making the atmosphere heavy. I looked around listening to the rest saying they had eyes on me already. "Come out Nygma… I have an answer for you" I exclaimed,my voice echoed out loud returning to me. "The second riddle was heart, to be honest to break my heart, it was a smart move you know… to use him" I spoke loudly and then I heard the Riddler laugh, he appeared behind a pillar, from the dark, the light was dim, but my eyes were used to it.
"You must be the smart one, all batgirls tend to be smart huh?" He asked
"Is that a riddle too?" I asked him
"Oh we know the answer, it's that red head a few years ago." He stated and I rolled my eyes.
"Where is he?" I asked if I didn't know whom I was referring to at that point.
"That's the point of the riddle , Batgirl, you are supposed to solve both of them. Where is Batman buried, and how is Jerome still alive?" He spoke up and sighed. "Must be hurtful to listen to the voice of your beloved after so long … he was asking of you Batgirl…"
I was aware that he was bluffing, that most likely Jerome was still dead, and he was imitated by Clayface, the situation with Jerome almost spilled out of my identity, I felt cold sweat on my forehead. "Oh what to do, if he has anything to tell me he can just as well come and tell me, now back to Batman. Where is he?" I asked him and maintained my cool, I could hear Barbara commenting my heart rate that was speeding up
"Buried" Riddle simply spoke
"Where? isn't there a riddle or something?" I asked tensing, I was negotiating and I had to keep my cool.
I won't let you bury it
"Please you know I wouldn't tell you" he laughed. "At least you will have to earn it"
"How" I asked
"Getting passed the obstacles" he simply said and signed me to look upwards as a bucket of clay fell on me I gasped trying to unstick myself away from the substance I could hear voice through and outside the comms as I was suffocating for a drop of air soon I felt electricity run through me. Spoiler and Red Hood attempted with their teasers to get me out, it was successful.
I won't let you smother it
I breathed out air as the clay melted around me, I was breathing heavily and sighed looking around me seeing the dissolved clay slowly moving again into a mass to form Clayface who laughed.
"Are you okay?" Red Hood asked me and pulled me on my feet, and I nodded
"Is this an obstacle Nygma?" I asked loudly and ready to charge at him.
"You are smart, the obstacles will lead you to your bat and if you are lucky enough he will be alive" he laughed and winked at us and I flinched at the words charging at him instead of Clayface. But one hand got me pulled to a wall the same happened to the rest, I stayed calm this time and threw a cryo bomb while the rest reacted in a similar way trying to break free from the grip of the mutant. I fell on my knees dodging another incoming clay tentacle rolling behind a pillar as i started setting another round of electrocution, I had no visual in Spoiler and Red Hood and how they were doing, I could hear grunts and moans of pain…
"Clear the way!" I exclaimed and got on the battlefield again and aimed at the mass of clay, I saw both of them dodge out of the way as I shot the electrocution cable to him and gave him a shock. It lasted a while as the mutant started melting, there were sparks flying around as I felt the teaser burn in my grip realizing how I was overusing it. Before I decided to set it aside it blew in my grip. I fell backwards, my ears were ringing…there was a blur. I was on my back trying to assess the damage of my body, I breathed and closed my eyes trying to calm down, once I opened them I saw a figure standing above, a gun aiming at me.
I won't let you murder it
Before I could react there was another shot, Red Hood. "Don't you dare to touch her" he yelled as he jumped and spin kicked Nygma in the face, I rolled over and stood up grasping his collar. "Now tell us where Batman is?" I exclaimed loudly and he laughed. Red Hood punched him roughly.
"Where the fun begins you shall find information of his whereabouts" Riddler spoke "But if I stop breathing so does he" he told us and I let him fall to the ground and looked at Spoiler and Red Hood.
"Amusement mile" Oracle spoke up, solving it for us. "Are you guys alright?" She asked and the eyes of the rest fell on me, I looked down at my hands. They were kind of burnt but still functional.
"I am good" I smiled softly to reassure them but I got serious once I heard the location, my gaze turned to the other two, none of us had nice memories from there as I skipped a heart beat and sighed.
"Nightwing, Red Robin, Robin will find you there… everything will be alright." Oracle tried to assure us.
"What did Penguin say to the others?" Spoiler asked changing the subject as we started moving to the vehicle.
"Penguin said that he doesn't know anything he only aided and funded Riddler's idea, he said that many were recruited for this and that it wasn't only for batman, he wants us all down…" she said as we heard a beep meaning that the lines were all connected again
"We are walking straight into a trap" Tim spoke, I heard his sigh.
"We could ask for help" I suggested.
"Negative, i have already requested assistance but the league hasn't responded, I can't track down the Kents or The arrows or anyone… " she added.
"Kids,Master Wayne wouldn't want you to risk your lives on a hunt that may be resultless." Alfred spoke making my heart ache as I heard those words leaving his mouth.
"No!" Damian exclaimed
"I agree with the demon spawn" Stephanie commented "He has done so much for us"
"Risked his life for ours countless times, I know that you Red and Nightwing, you are the most hurt from this… this situation, from him… I do not know where you stand, but I am with them"I added and sighed, I was the third eldest of them and I would protect the kids if Jason and Dick backed down.
"Are you kidding me?" Dick asked through comms.
"You are an idiot Batgirl has anyone mentioned that to you?" Jason asked and sighed heavily looking at me. I couldn't see his expression but I knew he was staring at me with a raised eyebrow.
"No, actually on the contrary I am usually the smart one, and the eldest when I have to cover for you two. I am serious." I explained.
"Well right now you don't have to cover for us." Red Hood spoke and rode the bike as I signed him to ride the bike.
"Of course, whatever it has been done, he saved us too you know, helped us and saved more times than all of you combined… so we won't let him be murdered" Dick spoke up as I rode behind him while Stephanie went on her own. She would go roof to roof.
I took a deep breath. It would be the longest night of our lives, I simply hugged Jason from behind placing my cheek on his leather jacket. I was scared and my brother could tell, I felt him exhale. He remained silent. Jason wasn't the one to tell me a lie just to comfort me.
A/N: I would appreciate your opinion in the comments. Would you like me to continue, it was meant to be a lot shorter but it kind of started good. Thank you for reading <3

Mad Mentors And Fractured Families draft
Hey, so, Rai and I FINALLY finished the draft for MMFF that we've been working on since September and expected to start posting in October.
It's just been that kind of year.
Anyway, this is the third in a series of DC x DP that we've been posting over on AO3. I was REALLY bad about sharing the first two here. Because life and brain and shit.
But I though to celebrate finally finishing I'd share the draft of the first chapter here, and if folks like I can share the rest?
Let me know what you think
Chapter 1
Danny Fenton
Danny asked Lady Gotham politely to show him where to meet Batman for this chat
Lady Gotham leads him to the Clocktower. Batman shows up before too long.
Danny nods to him. "Batman."
"Your majesty."
"You asked me to convince Hood to talk with you. I've...done what I can concerning your request. There's a...complication." Danny frowns. "What do you know about ghostly obsessions?"
Batman narrows his eyes, "I am learning. I do not trust all my sources."
"Fair enough. In the plainest English that makes sense, an obsession is like a ghost's favorite...passion but also food. Fulfilling the obsession generates energy for the ghost."
Batman nods.
"I won't give you specifics, but just know that Hood's might...go a little haywire at seeing you. I don't actually know how, though. We believe any reunion needs to be handled… gradually."
"I see."
"Nightwing had extended and invitation to your 'family brunch', but right now we think that would be a very bad idea. His obsession would not handle seeing so many people at once and I don't know what it would do to him.
Batman frowns.
"I promise, we are going to help him everyway we can. He wants you back in his life. Not only that, he needs you. But we need to find a way to do it safely."
Batman nods, deeply enough it is almost a bow. "Thank you."
Danny nods. "You're welcome."
"One other thing," Danny said. "Jason… is concerned abuot how you feel about him now. About if you'll even want him in your life. You're no-kill rule…"
Batman hesitates and sighs. "I am... not comfortable with many things Hood has done since returning to Gotham. But he will always be my son."
"Good."
---
Dick Grayson (needs rewrite)
Bruce was surprised to get home to find Dick already de-suiting in the batcave.
Nightwing had mostly been staying in bludhaven the last week, and Dick had said nothing about returning to the manor tonight.
Neither said anything while they showered, checked for injuries, and changed, but on the way up to the manor Bruce asked, "You're staying the night?"
Dick nodded. “Yeah.”
Bruce nodded. "I spoke with the High King earlier. You were right, something is wrong, probably something related to why he stayed away this long." Bruce is bewildered and a bit hurt that Jason would need support. Surely his son knew how much he was loved, welcomed, missed.... but Bruce had never been a good parent, and it was one of his screwups that had sent Jason to his death, so maybe Jason didn't, maybe Bruce was just going to muck things up again, maybe--
"Bruce," Dick shook his shoulder, and Bruce realized that he had stopped halfway up the stairs. "Snap out of it."
"Sorry."
Dick grabbed his arm and started hauling him up the stairs. "Come on, if we don't both get some sleep tonight Alfred will not be happy. And take a break on the beating yourself up, okay?"
"I'll try." Bruce let Dick lead him upstairs to Alfred's waiting presence.
Alfred hands each of them a plate of cookies -- reward or bribe for finishing the night without injuries, Bruce is never sure which. "I have the menu prepared for tomorrow" he says. "Master Tim is in bed and is restricted to one cup of caffinated beverage a day until further notice."
"Thank you Alfred."
"You are welcome, I'm sure. Now. Eat your cookies and get ready for bed yourselves."
Dick gripped Bruce's shoulder before turning away, but n o so fast that Bruce couldn't see the conflicted emotions in Dick's eyes.
Bruce hesitated. H e was so bad at being a parent. "Dick," he finally said.
"Yeah?"
Bruce thought of Danny's words. Of the things he'd noticed Dick carefully /not/ saying the past few weeks. Jason might not be the only one who needed to know he was accepted. "I'm not blind you know. And it's... okay. What your feeling. It's okay."
Dick looked at Bruce and frowned. "Bruce... I..."
"You never had a chance to /be/ his brother, Dick, and that was my fault. If I'd been better, listened more, you would have been around and things might have been different. But they weren't. So it's okay to start fresh with him. Whatever that means to you. Okay?"
Dick blushed. "You've been talking with Wonder Woman haven't you?"
"Ma Kent," Bruce mumbled.
Dick laughed and went up to bed.
---
Jason Todd
Jason woke up and lay in bed staring at the ceiling. The entire mess that was yesterday replaying in his head. Danny surprising him with Batman's... request. Telling the rest of the Fraid his history. Danny identifying his obsession.
/FAMILY/
It beat at his core, which he was starting to recognize. It felt like a solid hunk of granite, but fractured through with fissures that leaked /green/.
The same green that had been poisoning his thoughts and fucking with his perceptions for the past three years.
/FAMILY/ his core pulsed again, stronger even than the /green/ and the /rage/. Fraid was family, or could be. He knew that now, had felt in the way they had all held him yesterday, sending support and understanding -- even Tucker who still didn't entirely trust him.
But he also felt the bleeding ruptures of his lost family. The bonds that he had never fully trusted until they were gone, ripped away when he needed them most. Poisoned by fucking Talia and the /green/. Then ripped out and destroyed by his own actions.
Except that Dick still, somehow, wanted to see him. Except that B -- as Batman of all things -- had sought Danny out and asked for help seeing Jason.
Except that since the night he'd kidnapped Tim and Dick, none of them had crossed into Crime Alley without his permission. They waited. For him.
And maybe that was telling him something.
---
Jazz Fenton
Jazz tossed and turned in bed. Finally, as dawn crept through the smog, she got up, dressed in one of her new outfits from the shopping trip with Lidia, and went downstairs to make coffee. If Jason's obsession was family, and with everything he'd lost already, she knew the Fraid could never replace what was before. And what was she going to do for Danny? He needed a fucking break, and this last week and a half had gone at breakneck speed.
It took everything in her to keep the protective fury bubbling inside at bay. She didn't know what would happen if she lost her temper now, but it felt dangerous. She wanted her baby brother to have a normal life, her new crush to feel some kind of healing, and she couldn't do any of it. She took several deep breaths as she measured out the coffee. Breakfast first. She always felt better in the morning after food.
Jason came down the stairs quietly -- physically, anyway. His ghostspeak was crying /FAMILY-lost-breathe-green/ with only the faintest whispers of /rage/ underneath it all. "Hey Jazz."
"Hey." Her ghost speak answered his with /here for you/ and a whisper of /fury/ and /need to be helpful/. She winced as all of it came through. "Sorry."
She poured the water in the coffee maker and watched it drip through.
He rubbed his chest as his core continued to cry for /FAMILY/ but was calm when he spoke. "Don't be. I don't... Wherever we're going here, Jazz, I don't want any secrets between us." He smiles, and it's the realest smile she's seen from him. "And I think I'm actually doing better."
She smiled a bit at that. "That makes one of us, at least on the doing better part." She leaned against the counter, eyes on him now. "No secrets, huh?"
He shrugs. "As best we can. I think we both know a lot of other people's secrets, but for my stuff, yeah, ask and I'll tell you." His ghostspeak continues to pulse /FAMILY/ and /green/ but also /trust you/ and /mine-fraid-special/
She sighed. "Well, the first thing I'll tell you, Danny didn't try to become High King. He just did what he does. Protected everyone from the last asshole. We had no idea rite of combat was the way a new king would be decided."
/everything's gone sideways/ and /thanks/ and /he needs a break/
"So..." /FAMILY-fraid-mine/ "what can we do to give him one?"
"I think that's why he tried to plan a movie day. Especially since he said he's planning on torturing us all with space documentaries. He wanted to be an astronaut before everything happened." She sighed, scowled, her eyes glowing aqua fire. "I just want my little brother to be okay." /furious at all the trouble/ and /not you/ and /worried about him/
"I think he just needs some time with Sam and Tucker, and he's trying so hard to help you, me, and Dick as well, that he's getting lost again."
Jason nods. "So we need tonight to be as chill as possible." He takes a deep breath. "Which, if I understand how this obsession stuff words, means I should probably pull on my big boy pants and give Dick a call." /FAMILY-lost-green-mine-pain/
"That's a good idea. I can stay while you do." /obsessions are a bitch/
Jason nods. "That'd help, beautiful. You might want to talk with Danny first though." /FAMILY-idea-green-mischief-rage-FAMILY/
She raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?" /what are you planning/ and /curious/
"Well, there's no reason Danny has to be dealing with all the JL stuff. For instance, Nightwing could report to /you/ as the High King's representative."
"You are a fucking genius." She hugs him, pulls away blushing. "Except for your plan to shove your whole life into one room."
Jason blushes at the hug, then blinks at her words. "My what?"
"Sam told me you have all of your stuff in that single room upstairs." She crosses her arms and cocks her hip. "You allowed us into your home, not the other way around."
"Yeah, well." He rubbed the back of his neck. "This place was as new to me as it was to you, you know. But I'll probably start spreading out a bit more now." /FAMILY-fraid-welcome-green/ "It'd be good to have a home again."
She smiles. "I'll go talk to Danny, then."
---
Sam Manson
Jazz and Jason head next door. Sam sees them coming in first thing in the morning while the coffee is still hot and groans. "What now?"
Tucker laughs. "Ever the optimist, huh Sam?"
Danny just rolls his eyes and focuses on not freezing his coffee.
Sam grumbles. Jason gives her a light noggie. "Don't worry, we love you too." /FAMILY-mine-green-intruding?/
Danny shakes his head. "Just hoping this isn't some other major catastrophe." /fuck/ as his mug slips through his hand and thuds on the table, somehow managing to stay upright. He goes intangible to avoid the hot coffee that does splash.
Tucker grabs something to clean up the coffee.
Jazz smiles. "No. Just an idea Jason had."
Sam narrows her eyes. /sugar swans/ "What kind of idea?"
Jason chokes. "Hey, those weren't my idea."
Sam, "You practically dared me to!"
Jason, "Me? I told you not to."
Sam, "Exactly!"
Jason rolls his eyes
Jazz giggles, "You told her not to?" /of course she did/ still not fully grasping the sugar swans debacle, and shrugs. "Anyway, he suggested the JL could report to me as the High King's representative."
Tucker finished wiping up the coffee. "Huh. Representative, huh? Kinda like Nightwing is the liaison?"
Danny looked up from his now-abandoned coffee mug. "That's...huh..."
Jason shrugs, "Something like that. Or an ambassador maybe. Kinda like how the president doesn't negotiate directly with the UN."
Danny leans back in his seat, gives Jazz a considering look.
Sam thinks about it a minute, then nods. "It makes sense, Danny. Is there any reason you need to keep taking to Nightwing about everything yourself?"
Danny frowns. /if I don't/ He shakes his head. "I...I don't think so? Jazz...are you sure you want to do this?"
Jazz nods, determined. "I'll keep you updated on everything, but your first priority is to heal right now. That's why we came here. If I can help you do that by taking on JL negotiations, I will."
Tucker snorts. "You're kinda thrilled about this, aren't you, Jazz?"
She shrugs.
"Yeah, thought so." Tucker nods, "I'm down for that. Give us a chance to give you a break, dude." he rests a hand on Danny's shoulder.
Sam, "I wonder if there are like, ghost rules for something like this." She pulls out one of her notebooks. "We should ask Lady Gotham, since she's offered to explain things. The king has to be able to delegate, right?"
Danny shrugs. "Don't see why I wouldn't be able to, but having some more information couldn't hurt."
Sam makes a few notes, nods to herself, and closes the book.
"You're gonna ask her later, Sam?" Danny eyes the notebook.
Tucker chuckles. "That's where she keeps her questions for...well, everyone and everything, so probably."
Sam, "Well I'm not calling her up right now. But it might help."
"Alright. As far as I'm concerned, Jazz, you are now Ambassador of the High King. The Justice League talks to you for everything that I don't need to deal with directly."
Jason nods. "Alright! I need to give dickhead a call anyway, want me to pass on the good news?"
Jazz smiles. "I was gonna leave these three be, but please do."
---
Dick Grayson
Dick was digging into a bowl of Choco-Nut Puffs with peanut butter when his phone rang. He picked it up and saw "unknown number." His eyes widened when the call cut off after two rings, started again, cut off after one ring, started again. He raced to accept the call, not even bothering to finish swallowing.
"Yasyn?" He mumbled through a peanut butter sticky mouth.
There was silence for a moment. "You remembered."
The wonder and surprise in Jason's voice brought tears to his eyes. Dick hurried to swallow and said. "Of course I remembered, Little Wing. You're -- you've always been -- important to me. I remember all of our codes."
"Oh."
Dick took a deep breath and tried to get a handle on his emotion. "So, is everything okay? I figure you didn't call just to chat."
"Kinda? I mean, Danny asked me to pass on a message, but only because I was calling anyway? Just... some personal shit came up and, and I know I don't have the right to ask. Kinda surprised you're still talking to me really, with... with nearly shooting you and everything--"
"Jason!" Dick cuts Jason off before he can talk himself into the spiral Dick can hear building.
"Jason, no matter what, I will always be here for you, okay? We're family. So tell me what you need."
Jason gasped and said, so quietly Dick barely heard him, "Family."
"Yeah, Jay. That's what I said. So tell me what's going on." He was starting to get worried now. Jason sounded so different from the last time they'd talked. Not as angry. Vulnerable. Almost afraid.
Whoever had made his Little Wing afraid was going to learn a new meaning of fear.
"Family," Jason repeated, louder this time. "That's... I need... family."
Dick held his breath, not sure what to say. What Jason meant. Not daring to hope.
"Talia... When first came back, she told me things, showed me things. She lied, Big Bird."
"What did she lie about, Jay?"
"That no one cared. That I'd been forgotten. Replaced. Abandoned."
Dick's breath caught. He wanted to scream a denial, but he sensed that wasn't what Jason needed now. Jason had said Talia lied. He knew it wasn't true, but that didn't tell Dick what Jason needed.
(Dick was going to destroy Talia. He didn't care what she was to Bruce, or how powerful she was. He was going to find the bitch and make her regret ever being born for how she had hurt his Little Wing.)
"She lied, Dick. She aimed me at Robin, specifically. But she lied about all of it. And I was so angry."
"So angry because I needed yous. I needed my family. And I had no one."
Dick filed the comment about Robin away for later. If Talia had sent Jason after Robin there was a reason for it, but now wasn't the time. "You have me. Whatever you want from me, Jaybird. Whatever you need."
"Can you come over early today? So we can talk?"

The interaction I believe, in my heart, happened between dick and Bruce before Bruce left to fight Jason in crime alley. “Bruce, if you're going to see Jason, I'm coming too. He’s going to mess with your mind. He already has, by forcing your meeting to be in Crime Alley. Please.” Dick was begging. Bruce shook his head. “I can’t let you come.” “Bruce!” Dick pleaded. “He will kill you.” Bruce shook his head. “Yes. He will. Dad please. Jason is- he is my brother and I love him but he may very well try to kill you!” Dick half screamed. Bruce sighed, turning to face his oldest. He placed a gentle hand on his son's cheek. Dicks lip began to tremble. “Chum, you need to stay here. You’re supposed to bury me anyways. I can’t-“ he stopped and took a deep breath, looking deeply into the eyes he knew so well. The eyes he had fallen in love with. The eyes that had pulled him out of his misery. They were filled with tears. “I can’t lose another son. And Gotham needs her Batman.” Dick inhaled sharply. “You think he’ll kill you.” He whispered. Bruce winced. “It is a very real possibility. I cannot rule it out. But I can forbid you from coming. Chum,” Bruce pulled his son closer. “If he does, I want you to promise me you’ll let him live.” Dick shook his head, eyes pained. “You’ll let him kill you.” He whispered. “Won’t you? You won’t even fight. You’ll just let him kill you. For what Bruce? So that he feels better about himself? So that he’s happy when he finally kills the man who couldn’t save him? No! I don’t- he doesn’t get to decide that!” “But I do.” Bruce spoke softly. Dick shook his head, tears threatening his eyes. “No! No you don't get to do this to me!!! I lost my parents once and I won’t have it happen again! I will not let you go Bruce! Please dad! Please!!!!” But Bruce was moving, walking to the door, his cowl already slipped over his head. “No. No no. No no. No please. Please dad please.” Dick crawled after him. “Please please please please please!” Bruce stopped, closing his eyes. A single tear slid down his cheek as he turned and knelt for his son. “You were always my favorite Robin. You will always be my Robin. You are the reason I am alive today. You were my reason for the twelve years we have been granted together. I will forever be thankful that you allowed me to become your father. I love you Richard Robin Grayson-Wayne.” And he pressed a single kiss on his son's forehead. Dick was crying silently. “Please.” He whispered. “Goodbye.” Bruce whispered back.

Jason snuck out of his window after lunch the next day. He took the car back to the church, and she stood at the entrance to the courtyard as if she knew he was coming. "I'm sorry," Jason whispered, "I just—. I needed—." "Jason, can I ask you something?" questioned Sister Irene. Jason nodded. "Why didn't you tell your father what really happened to that man?" "What man?" Jason asked. Sister Irene took a deep breath and wrung her hands. "The one that fell," she whispered. Jason's blood ran cold. "I wouldn't have asked if I was judging you. I'm asking because you carry so much guilt for something out of your control." "I wanted him to die. I wanted it so bad," Jason whispered, "Don't you think that's wrong?" He reached into his pocket and placed her rosary back into her hands. She shook her head. "Consider it a gift... And I guess it was wrong, but it wasn't as if you acted on your feelings. Would you like to talk about something?" she asked. Jason hated himself for feeling the way he did. The comfort he felt around her felt so familiar, so warm, and he couldn't stay away. "You know what I've been training to do at night," Jason whispered, "Don't you? Sister, I'm going to kill someone." She looked up at him, and he stood up a little straighter so that he towered over her. She took his hand and made him look her in the eyes. "Look at me. You've got a good heart—." "I don't think I do, Sister Irene. I do a lot of things wrong... Like coming here, I shouldn't have come back," Jason interrupted her, "I really shouldn't have come back." "I'm glad you did. You'll be back again, and hopefully, you'll bring me a danish," Sister Irene joked. Jason smiled. She stood on her tiptoes before leading him back to where they talked the day before. Sister Irene sat on the same bench. "Would you like for me to pray with you?" she asked. Jason swallowed hard and nodded. "Okay, well, today I want to hear your words." "I don't know where to start—." She gave him a stern look, and he sat down with her. Sister Irene took his hand, and they bowed their heads. "God, I need you to keep me from doing the wrong thing... In more ways than one," Jason paused. He opened one eye to look at Sister Irene, and she slapped his hand. "Ouch!" "Go on, and keep your eyes closed," she warned him. Jason chewed his lip to cover up the fact that he was smiling. He bowed his head once more. "I'm not the most eloquent guy out there, but I want You to know that I'm desperate and afraid, and I'm so tired of being in pain... Please don't let me act out of fear. Let me be sure. Let me take my life back, please," Jason whispered. Sister Irene nodded gently. "Amen?" "Amen," she whispered in reply. "Will you stay for a while?" "I don't think I should," Jason mumbled. His phone rang. "See, I think I should go... But I'll think about the danish thing. Do you like coffee?" "I like everything, Jason," Sister Irene grinned. Jason didn't say goodbye before he turned around and walked away. He walked to the park before finally answering his phone. "Barbara?" Jason asked. "What's going on?" Barbara asked. Jason chewed his lip. "You're not in trouble. Bruce is just worried because you disappeared." "I'm alright. I just went for a drive and got some fresh air. Can I come and talk to you?" Jason asked. Barbara made a clicking sound with her tongue. "I guess I could fit you into my busy schedule. Something wrong?" Barbara asked. Jason made a soft noise on the phone. He knew Barbara would never allow him to lie. "Is it serious?" "No, I just figured you're the only one who won't make fun of me," Jason replied. "I'll be here," Barbara replied. Jason drove to the clock tower and made his way up to meet Barbara. She offered him some chips, and he turned it down. "I started out this week thinking that maybe I'd kill someone, and now I've got a crush on a nun-. Can I go to hell for saying that?" Jason confessed. Barbara took off her glasses, and her eyes widened.
"Okay... Um," Barbara let out a breath, "Having a crush on someone isn't a sin... I'm a little concerned about that first part, though." "That's not the important part. Barbara, she knows," Jason whispered. "She knows what?" Barbara asked. "Everything. The sister knows things about me that I don't even know... Things I barely remember. It's fuzzy, but she asked me about something. She knows I was Robin," Jason confided in Barbara. She pinched the bridge of her nose. "She's a meta... Or maybe she's got a divine gift. I don't know." Barbara nodded. "Okay... So, you have a crush on her? This nun? How old is she?" Barbara asked. "She's an um—. She's a postulant, so maybe eighteen. She doesn't look that old. Barbara, are you mad at me?" Jason asked. Barbara shook her head. Jason went to the fridge and pulled out a soda. He took a sip and sat down. "I'm not mad at you, Jason. Are you okay?" Barbara asked. Jason shrugged. "It's okay if you're not. This conversation is just between you and me." "Same old, same old... I just—. The other stuff doesn't seem as important as this. Barbara, I just met her yesterday, and she knows my whole life... And she wants to see me again," Jason whispered, "I can't do that, though... Can I?" He plopped down on the couch and put his face in his hands. "Jason, it's alright... And I really can't say for you. Maybe you should get to know her since she knows you so well. Do you want me to look into her?" Barbara asked. Jason shook his head. "Please be careful, Jason." Jason knit his brows together as he rocked back and forth. "I can't go back... I shouldn't. Not to see her, at least," Jason whispered, "If anyone asks—." "You came over for lunch. You got on my nerves for a little bit. I sent you home," Barbara whispered. Jason offered her an unsure smile. His eyes seemed so uncertain. Jason knew what he swore to himself, but he wasn't sure that he could stick to his word. Sister Irene's voice floated around his head.
