Oonagh and her gutter mouth | SummitPressPublishers
Oonagh Duncan and I worked on her book proposal for Healthy as F*ck. If you find the word f*ck too hard to handle, you're not her reading audience, nor will you like this interview. But that word got Oonagh a book deal, complete with bidding war, and it spoke to the very people who would want the other products and services she offers. That word was part of the design.

Alex Hirsch going "I'd be interested in exploring Bill confronting all of his lies" during the Seattle book signing and him going "This is my child. Please be kind to him. He doesn't deserve it though." during the San Diego book signing...
It makes me incredibly happy that he's just as obsessed with this problem triangle as we are.

I shouldn’t do this here because this is the “no marketing” website and I want it to stay that way but… I have just snuck into the realm of traditional publishing and my weird book about assassins (aka The Murder Siblings TM) focusing on stupid jokes, sword fights, masked balls, 🏳️‍🌈gay sex🏳️‍🌈, mental health issues, and rebelling against the rich isn’t being seen in the jungle of hetero TikTok picks and Sarah J Maas books. (Even tho it’s been sold as Six of Crows meets The Princess Bride.)
If Snowblooded doesn’t start getting noticed by people, I think my career in trad pub might be over just as it started. So during this our pride month could I perchance ask you to signal boost this post to support a lesbian and poly author trying to break in to the trad pub jungle? (Also, the book can be bought HERE )

Blurb:
Valour and Petrichor are esteemed members of the Order of Axsten, an assassin’s guild tasked with keeping order in the rough city of Vinterstock. Plucked from the streets as children and raised to compete for their guild’s approval, Valour uses her brawn to survive, while Petrichor strives to be a gentleman assassin. When they’re given their biggest job yet—to kill Brandquist, the mysterious leader of the city's illegal magic trade—it’s a recipe for disaster. If they can quell their rivalry long enough, the reward will be enough to settle their debts with the Order and start new lives.
If this job wasn’t dangerous enough, Valour is saddled with looking after a famed hotelier, Ingrid Rytterdahl. Valour finds her dangerously attractive, but the aspec Petrichor can’t wait to be rid of them both. He begrudgingly accepts Ingrid’s knowledge and connections as they navigate the city’s criminal underbelly in pursuit of Brandquist.
As secrets bubble to the surface, the duo must outwit the thugs on their tail, keep Ingrid alive, and—hardest of all—work together without murdering each other.

Forgetting your character is disabled isn't a "good representation" flex: Writing Disability Quick Tips
Tumblr media
[ID: An image with “Writing Disability quick tips: Forgetting your character is disabled isn't a good representation flex” written in chalk the colour of the disability pride flag, from left to right, red, yellow, white, blue and green. Beside the text is a poorly drawn man in red chalk looking down confused at his leg, one is drawn normally, the other is drawn to resemble a basic prosthetic. He has question marks above his head. /End ID]
For a while, I was involved in the booktok and Tik Tok writing communities, specifically parts of the community focused on more diverse books and authors. During this time, I noticed a reoccurring pattern when people were highlighting stories featuring disabled characters, or even promoting their own books, and that was how often people would say "I kind of forget they have [insert disability here] because they're such a badass."
The intention behind this statement is (usually) good, with people trying to show that their disabled characters are self-sufficient and don't fall into the tired old sad/helpless disabled person trope, however, you can - and very much should - do that without erasing your character's disability. If you find yourself forgetting your character is disabled, or your beta and pre-release readers are commenting about forgetting it, then there's a good chance that's exactly what you've done - and as a disabled person myself, if I see that statement being used in your marketing in particular, it's a giant red flag and a sure fire way to make sure I give the book in question a skip.
Remember, disabilities (especially major ones) are a part of your character's identity, and they're important regardless of the character's personal relationship with it. Even if your character doesn't specifically identify with the label of disabled or doesn't really care that much, it's should still be impacting their daily life, even in small ways. If you're finding yourself forgetting about a major part of your character's identity, it might be a good idea to check and make sure their disability is having an impact on the character.
I see this comment most often with amputee characters, and to me, it's a pretty consistently good indication that the author has treated their character's prosthetic as a cure rather than the mobility aid it is. It's far from unique to amputees, mind you (I talked about this a lot when I was discussing the character of Toph from Avatar), but it's when I tend to see it the most. Remember that mobility aids and other forms of assistive technology and assistive magic (if it's a fantasy story) are just that: they're aids, they assist, they shouldn't be cures.
Of course, this wasn't unique to Booktok, I've seen it on nearly every other social media site with a writing and book-focused community at some point, but Tik Tok was just where I spent the most time and it seems to be where I see the most people specifically gloating about it.

I wrote a novella! Now you can buy it! I have it set at $7 or pay what you want. Or you can get it for free if you’re a Kofi member! It's a queer urban fantasy romance and I hope you love it! Makes a great gift for the holidays! In the future I'll have printed copies going up on sale, but for now you can get this awesome 60 page PDF.
This is a story that started as a note on my phone and grew over years into this. This is the story of Astrid, a lonely painter who is on vacation looking for inspiration. The island is beautiful but the only thing she wants to paint is the local girl she meets, Aoife.
As they grow closer the inevitable separation starts to loom between them. Astrid’s time draws to a close and she must think of heading home she starts to delve into the mystery of Aoife and wonders if she can take the heartbreak of leaving her behind.

quitting social media has been such a game-changer. People always ask me, “ what's your username ?” I say I don't have Instagram or TikTok.. and then they’re like, “What the fuck? How are you living under a rock?” But honestly, it’s been three years now and still counting, and I feel so much better. I used to scroll endlessly on Instagram, and looking back, I can see how that was kind of ruining my life. I’m not the type to just scroll all day anymore, and when I try to download something like tiktok , I end up deleting it. I just don’t feel the need for it. Now, I spend my time journaling, watching movies, listing to my fav songs, posting on Tumblr , I love also to make list of movie to watch during different mood basically watching anything that can improve my habits and my systems.. doing things that make me feel good and actually living instead of getting lost in a never-ending scroll life taught me that no social media = no enemies . The change is real, and honestly my life’s just better without social media ! I’m not saying social media is toxic for everyone or that people should just delete it, it’s just not for me anymore. It’s not about acting like I’m above anyone or judging people who are still all in. Honestly, I think it’s just about realizing that it wasn’t doing anything positive for me anymore. I was stuck in this loop my grades were trash constantly comparing myself, It got exhausting and I was only (13yo or 14 ) So, I decided to stop. It’s crazy how much quieter my life feels now, how much more I can just be without needing to check what everyone else is doing. The pressure to be someone I’m not, to be constantly available and “on,” just vanished.

I’ll never forget when I was arguing with a person in favor of total prison abolition and I asked them “what about violent offenders?” And they said “Well, in a world where prisons have been abolished, we’ll have leveled the playing field and everyone will have their basic needs met, and crime won’t be as much of an issue.” And then I was like “okay. But…no. Because rich people also rape and murder, so it isn’t just a poor person thing. So what will we do about that?” And I don’t think they answered me after that. I’m ashamed to say I continued to think that the problem was that I simply didn’t understand prison abolitionists enough and that their point was right in front of me, and it would click once I finally let myself understand it. It took me a long time to realize that if something is going to make sense, it needs to make sense. If you want to turn theory into Praxis (I’m using that word right don’t correct me I’ll vomit) everyone needs to be on board, which mean it all needs to click and it needs to click fast and fucking clear. You need to turn a complex idea into something both digestible and flexible enough to be expanded upon. Every time I ask a prison abolitionist what they actually intend to do about violent crime, I get directed to a summer reading list and a BreadTuber. It’s like a sleight-of-hand trick. Where’s the answer to my question. There it is. No wait, there it is. It’s under this cup. No it isn’t. “There’s theory that can explain this better than I can.” As if most theory isn’t just a collection of essays meant to be absorbed and discussed by academics, not the average skeptic. “Read this book.” And the book won’t even answer the question. The book tells you to go ask someone else. “Oh, watch this so-and-so, she totally explains it better than me.” Why can’t you explain it at all? Why did you even bring it up if you were going to point me to someone else to give me the basics that you should probably already know? Maybe I’m just one of those crazy people who thinks that some people need to be kept away from the public for everyone’s good. Maybe that just makes me insane. Maybe not believing that pervasive systemic misogyny could be solved with a UBI and a prayer circle makes me a bad guy. But it’s not like women’s safety is a priority anyway. It’s not like there is an objective claim to be made that re-releasing violent offenders or simply not locking them up is deadly.

I'm already seeing a lot of people doing the same as they've done with JKR going "I ALWAYS knew he was shitty, his stories have ALWAYS been bad," etc etc, mostly to make themselves feel better about having liked or maybe even still liking what he wrote.
Not only is this an unhealthy way to process your grief, but it also perpetuates the idea that bad art can only be made by bad people - and even worse: that good art can only be made by good people, and that idea is exactly why people are still in denial about JKR and why it took this long for the Gaiman pustule to burst.
It doesn't mean that we are immoral for having liked it when we didn't know any better, or still having fond memories, for having created fan art or gotten tattoos or whatever else.
But keep in mind that we need to be careful about perpetuating that idea as well, because that mindset has consequences.
Edit: And also, obviously, boycott the shit out of that fucker.
