Playing as a mage Hawke makes so much of da2 act 3 (and somewhat 2) read as hawke being set up by Meredith to be thee fall guy for when things eventually go wrong. Like, i can't explain it, but mage hawke is expected to either fall in line and be the "good example" or else they will be the sacrificial example of what happens when you disobey.

Now, maybe this goes harder for me bc i play a mostly blue (ehhh occasionally purple) personality hawke who shifts more red when people are im danger but theres been scenes where Hawkes directly says to her he wont put a mage back under her boot and she is like be careful Hawke and the interaction ends panning to a tranquil mage so i dont think im crazy.

Now, this added on with Anders either being hawkes friend/partner the end of the game and his act 3 choices to me read more like him going "make me the symbol/fall instead" esp regarding the end choice you can make.
