I’ve seen a lot of posts going around about accurately writing bilingual characters so I thought I’d share a little something. I’m near fluent in German and have lived in German speaking countries for a good portion of my life. I also have an undergraduate degree in German. While attending grad school in Austria, these are some of the notes I took in an art history class. I think they’re hilarious as they’re an unholy mix of German and English. Maybe it will help illustrate how some words are easier in one language than another and how the brain works!

need the same energy people have for klavier speaking german w apollo spilling into khura'in phrases. esp since hes so closed off and never mentions his past. the first time it happens klavs shocked like you know khura'inese? and apollos like yeah its my first language i guess (trying to be evasive) i feel like he'd also get slightly homesick or nostalgic sometimes and put on channels from khura'in to doze off to just to hear something familiar. n klavier is ecstatic to be privy to this side of apollo that he knows very few people have seen.

I’m making a PSA for all my English-as-second-language followers/engagers: stop apologizing to me for your English. Stop apologizing to me for your English. I promise you that you type in English a lot more legibly than I do in any other language. I promise you that you type in English a lot more legibly than some people who have only ever known to speak, read, and write in English. And if they have the confidence to communicate in English regardless of and unapologetic about the quality of it, then so should you!
Also, all of y’all sound great. I have never interacted with a single person in this fandom yet who used English as a non-native language who I couldn’t understand. Y’all are already doing great!

GUYS GUYS GUYS GUYS
bilingual tmnt 2012 and rotmnt head cannons!!
Ok so I’m Mexican American (ew america) and my mom was born and raised in Mexico
Yet I’m not bilingual
I’m taking Spanish class in my high school
This is what I think the rottmnt kids are going thru
My mother had to assimilate to get a job here. And I think that’s what rottmnt Yoshi had to do too.
But my mother refused to make my first language spanish, she wanted my life here to be easier.
I think Yoshi didn't want to be reminded of what he left behind.
He used his ninjitsu skills to become a movie star and actively runs away from his heritage from the show.
Not that he doesn't want to be Japanese, or that he wants to forget that part of himself, but he wanted to branch out and be Lou Jitsu, and japanese tradition and culture are not as important to him and his identity as 2012 Splinter.
Tumblr media
He ran away from tradition.
I firmly hc that the rottmnt turtle know japanese in the way I know spanish; nothing beside the scoldings and the frustrated mumbling of their father.
"Kuso!" Their dad will yell as he stubs his foot.
"Konoyarou," He mumbles as he talks about a person who screamed at the sight of him.
"No Blue! Aho! Don't eat random stuff off the floor!"
I hc that rottmnt Splinter has a potty mouth, and because of the all his kids know is how to curse and scold someone in japanese, which you know, they use to insult each other.
The rottmnt kids have to go out of their way to learn japanese, it's an underlying language in their home and a part of their heritage, but they live like third generation immigrants.
As opposed to the 2012 turtles, whose first language was most definitely japanese.
2012 Splinter grew up, fell in love, and lived in Japan for the majority of his life. He loved his heritage and tradition, the only reason he moved to New York was because he was literally running for his life. It was chance that he ended up in America.
Tumblr media
In Japanese schools, much like many other schools in different countries, have a class that teaches english bc ya know, it's the national language bc british and american ppl be pissbabies. So Splinter learned english, and like the good student he was, was good at it.
That why for he lived there he could live comfortably and could talk to others (like the pet shop owner), bc he already knew english.
Then he got mutated and four sons lmao.
So he raised them the way he was raised; traditionally japanese. The language, the tradition, the customs, everything.
So all the tmnt teetles are fluent in japanese, and a part of the reason they were not allowed topside before they were 15 is because they weren't done learning english yet.
They often forget words in english, and in the heat of the moment, it's the first language that comes up.
Raph and Mikey's english slang comes from the comics they've read and the movies they watched.
Leo's english mimics basic english textbooks and Captain Ryan's
Donnie sounds like an encyclopedia bc that's where he gets most of his vocabulary from.
TLDR: The rottmnt turtles only know insults and curse words in japanese while the 2012 turtles are bilingual; fluent in both Japanese and English because of the way their respective Splinters raised them.

New journal + some Stitch stickers to hopefully motivate me to actually use it this time 😂 I think I might try to start journaling in German with this one to have a proper record of my improvement. Yeah it’ll start off fairly simple but if I stick to it by the time I finish this notebook there should be a huge difference.

the biggest betrayal as a polyglot is when you hear a word for the first time after only having read it for so long and it's all wrong
in other news, I recently learned it's dande-lion and not dan-dee-leeon and I'll never be the same again

findings from ~4 days of blogging in german on my other blog:
I now cringe significantly less at people using german to talk about feelings
this could actually help me express my own emotions in my mother tongue??? maybe?
I realised that a huge barrier for me is the fear of accidentally saying something dialectal on here* when I post in German, and then being ridiculed for it
*i do experience this irl too but for some reason less intensely... i guess it's more like in the background of my brain irl

“buT NOboDy spEAks iRIsh! wE MiGht aS weLL HAve sigNs WRiTTen iN POLish! HuUuRrR DuUuRrRr!”
Oh do ever so kindly shit up and fuck off with that SHITE!
It is not an argument nor is it a refutation!
End it!
Fucking hell.
Colonial faeces!
Bumbrained fodderbeasts who are scared of the country’s native language and don’t like to be reminded that we were here long before they showed up, our presence destroying their delusions of grandeur and superiority by reminding them they hadn’t conquered fucking shit.
I’d send the fuckers away to a convent with all the other stupid geese of their generation. Forever.
In the meantime the rest of us can continue living in the 21st century trying to make the world a better place.
Bottom line. It’s a language! It never killed anybody!
Get fucking used to it!
Fucking hell.
Side Note: You’d be surprised at the sheer number of Irish folk in the republic who want the language to die too. They’d make the British SO proud. Fucking morons. Ghastly little pea brained stooges. They’re like extremely dumb children.

Whenever a death eater tried to do legilimens on a bi/multilingual student’s brain, they weren’t able to get much because everything was in an incomprehensible mish-mash of different languages in a pattern completely incomprehensible to the monolingual brain.

Ok, im sorry i know it's not related to this fandom, but i know that y'all are really reasonable people and have critical thinking (which i adore guys keep being as fantastic and amazing, you always make my day better)
But like can we stop expecting everyone to be american or having english as their first language?
Like i get it, a lot of people ARE american/have english as their mother tongue, but it's not everyone, and being insulted about reading and writing comprehension just because i didnt got it like it was meant to be its...
Really stupid honestly.
Like im not even mad, im just laughing at this idiot and blocked them but like, can we stop assuming everyone know english as their first language?
I see a lot of comment under post with mistakes, and most of those people state in their bio that they're not from the Usa/English speaking country, and they get slammed for those grammar errors like what? (Also not talking about mocking hate anon and their mistake thats different lol)
Again, this fandom is not concerned, i just consider it a safe space to rant cause well i love yall and know some of you may relate and most can understand how annoying/tiring it can get.
And for the people who may stumble upon this post and keep insulting us non native english speakers for innocents mistakes, i have one thing to say:
You speak english because it's the only language you know, I speak english because its the only language you know.
We are not the same.
