In my L1-acquisition class two weeks ago, our professor talked about how only 9% of the speech a baby hears is single words. Everything else is phrases and sentences, onslaughts of words and meaning!
Thus, a baby not only has to learn words and their meanings but also learn to segment lots of sounds INTO words. Doyouwantalittlemoresoupyesyoudoyoucutie. Damn.
When she talked about HOW babies learn to segment words our professor said, and I love it, "babies are little statisticians" because when listening to all the sounds, they start understanding what sound is likely to come after another vs which is not.
After discussing lots of experiments done with babies, our professor added something that I already knew somewhere in my brain but didn't know I know: All this knowledge is helpful when learning an L2 as well:
Listen to natives speaking their language. Original speed. Whatever speaker. Whatever topic.
It is NOT about understanding meaning. It is about learning the rhythm of the language, getting a feeling for its sound, the combination of sounds, the melody and the pronunciation.
Just how babies have to learn to identify single words within waves of sounds, so do adults learning a language. It will help immensely with later (more intentional) listening because you're already used to the sound, can already get into the groove of the languge.
Be as brave as a baby.
You don't even have to pay special attention. Just bathe in the sound of your target language. You'll soak it up without even noticing.

I would really like to share this app with all of you - Polygloss!
The premise is really simple - you are given a picture, and you need to describe it in a way that the other person will understand! Then, you'll be given the other person's description, and will need to figure out, which picture it is!
I cannot say enough how good it is for your brain. And if you will make a mistake, don't worry - other person can correct it, and you'll be able to give them a lil' reward as a thanks!
As you can see, I have a long road ahead. But maybe, we can go on this walk together!
Feel free to join me! (つ≧▽≦)つ
Also yeah, there's a lot of languages, not just Eng and German owo

Here, have a random German lesson!
Some conjugations and some pronouns!
A few pronouns are the same and therefore context is needed
Ich (I)
Du (you)
er/sie/es (he/she/it)
Ihr (you all)
Wir (we)
Sie/sie (You formal, they plural)
Most verbs conjugate the same way, with exceptions like "mögen" (to like), "essen" (to eat) or "müssen" (to have to, must)
However we won't worry about those
We'll go over a pretty simple verb, "gehen", "to go"
A good way to remember if you don't know what a conjugation is, is that "geh" is the base, the letters afterwards being the ones that change
Here is each pronoun again with the respective conjugations
Ich gehe (I go)
Du gehst (You go)
er/sie/es geht (he/she/it goes)
Ihr geht (you all go)
Wir gehen (We go)
Sie/sie gehen (you go (formal), they go (plural))
If I got anything wrong please correct me lol, this is something I like sharing with people but I am still not a fluent speaker
In any case hope this was interesting or fun to read!
I realized I had made a very small mistake, though it was unrelated to the main lesson, I've fixed it now

German Pluralmarkers
In my Language Acquisition course, we got to the topic of plurals. Why are they difficult? Because there's SO MANY!
Tumblr media
My prof criticized the tip "just always learn the plural when you learn the word" because yes, that is helpful but wouldn't it be more helpful to know that there's some regularity?! Just like the gender of nouns is not completely random (post about that here) Here are some of my prof's slides about the rules/probabilities:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the rules above cover around 40% of german words. there's more, of course, but they only cover around 4%:

Considering starting a journal in German for the primary reason of my mother doesn’t speak it nor does she understand technology enough to translate it and my dad doesn’t care what I journal about. But I also absolutely don’t know German well enough for that. Might try anyway though. Use a translator for what I don’t know and maybe I’ll pick up on things over time.

Es ist hier! Mein Robotic Esser!
Tumblr media
Die Zusammenfassung: Armand hat etwas bei Amazon bestellt. Und es ist endlich hier!
Content: fluff, armandaniel, domestic, adorable Armand
a/n: Ich weiß es nicht, wie ich ‚he heard the doorbell ring’ sagen. Ich habe ’es klingelt an der Tür‘ gefunden, aber wie kann man es benutzen? 🤔
Ich habe auch eine sehr wichtige Frage. How would you say, please leave comments I snort them and live off their effect circulating in my blood, in german—
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Armand war am ganzen Morgen aufgeregt. Er hat etwas bei Amazon bestellt und es war endlich hier!
Er hat die Tür klingelt gehört. In der Tür stand ein Austräger mit einem groß Paket. Armand hat ihm zu viel Geld gegeben, dann schloss er die Tür.
"Daniel! Es ist hier!" - rief er.
Daniel saß im Wohnzimmer. ’Er ist wie ein Kind. Sehr glücklich und … süß.‘ — dachte Daniel als er sah ihn an.
”Ist es—„
"Ja, mein Schatz! Mein Robotic Esser!"
”Oh Gott..“
”Ich versuche wenn es alles essen und Objekte herum bewegen und— „
”Armand unser Haus nicht zerstören, bitte."
Aber Armand hörte nicht was Daniel sagte, er begann das Paket zu öffnen.
✨"Sehr geehrte Besucher, aufgrund Ihres hohen Alters ist unsere Leopardin leider gestorben"✨
The marking on the picture around the word "Ihres" points to the importance of proper capitalization of the formal you in German to distinguish it from her/your
ihr = her (feminine singular possessive pronoun) / your (plural personal pronoun; this doesn't make sense here though)
aufgrund ihres hohen Alters -> because of her (the female leopards) old age
Ihr = you (formal)
aufgrund Ihres hohen Alters -> because of your (the readers)visitors) old age
Dear visitor, due to her old age, the female leopard has unfortunately passed away.
vs.
Dear visitor, due to your old age, the female leopard has unfortunately passed away.
I know it's bad to gloat, I really do But there's something absolutely horribly wonderful about the way my desk mate advocated for using chat GPT to learn German, that it's “so good and so perfect”, “the best way to learn because it corrects mistakes” and so on and so forth Only to have his letter (written using chat GPT) completely destroyed and crossed out by the teacher because it's mistake upon mistake (let alone it uses a lot of grammar that we did not learnt yet) and in general just absolutely sensless and useleess. Who would have thought, right?
As I hit another unit of Duolingo that's all about Umweltschutz, environmental protection, I'm wondering if this is a normalised German cultural thing to at least nominally care about the environment, a Duolingo thing that appears in all its courses regardless of language, or maybe neither and it was just some particularly devoted Duo course designer who really cares about environmental action
