Considering starting a journal in German for the primary reason of my mother doesn’t speak it nor does she understand technology enough to translate it and my dad doesn’t care what I journal about. But I also absolutely don’t know German well enough for that. Might try anyway though. Use a translator for what I don’t know and maybe I’ll pick up on things over time.

100 Days of Productivity (13/100)
I'm back to my hometown after spending a week in Germany, visiting my partner. It's hard to study while still thinking of all the wonderful places we've visited, but gets easier once I remember I will live there someday ♡

in a love/hate relationship with the german language
some days i feel like studying a lot and watching movies and listening to music in german, then i start feeling like shit and questioning myself why i keep going
then I think that there's no reason to stop bc it's been a long time since i started and i got so good at it
then I think i am preparing myself for a life that will never happen
then i get excited all over again and think about the next time i will visit berlin and all the other cities i wanna visit
then again i think about leaving everything behind
am i crazy or just really tired???

two posts in a couple of days? who am i? i’ve been studying german so i wanted to make a special post for it. i wrote two short paragraphs, one about my favorite words in german and one about which languages i want to learn next. then i looked up the words in the next unit we’ll talk about tomorrow, and lastly i did the exercises in the workbook 🤓 absolutely love to be more prepared than my classmates.

Yes, I 100% use learning new languages as an excuse to rewatch my childhood favourite TV shows and movies. Because this way nobody is allowed to judge. It’s educational.

I think my problem with learning German is that I don’t have the confidence to think that I’m capable of it.
When I started learning French again I went into it fully thinking I could learn French to a conversational level within 2 or 3 years. I did that. I can have a conversation in French. Sure I can’t talk about incredibly detailed things but I can manage a conversation.
With German however, I’ve never had that confidence. I’ve been trying to learn German since I was 15 (I’m 18 now) and I have consistently thought I could not do it. I have thought it was too difficult and essentially impossible.
I don’t know how I had the confidence to think I could become conversational in French within 2 years but I desperately need that confidence in German.

/ // langblr intro/planning post // /
hi! inspired by this post, i’m introducing myself and my goals wrt language study. let’s go!
i’m crimson (aka. jackvine), pronouns they/ey/she. my native language is english, but i grew up with some german and spanish that i am reinforcing with classes and self-study. i have some background in latin and attic greek (though i’ve forgotten specifics of the grammar and my vocab recall is very hit-or-miss) and have a quarter-assed understanding of french—all of these, i’d like to improve upon. i’ve been learning korean for the past year and a half, and spent time in seoul last summer on a study program. most recently, i’ve become actively interested in learning chinese and the corresponding Korean hanja characters. all this to say, i have too many desires and too few ways to achieve them, so i’m attempting to economize. economics and further content below.
in terms of the future—i’m planning to take a break from school and go abroad next year. currently hoping to spend part of the year in peru (with family), and spring in south korea. goalswise, this means i’d ought to prioritize spanish and korean, especially listening and speaking skills in those languages. i am focusing on east asian languages/cultures in my uni study, so korean and chinese are higher on the list (with the bonus of chinese having influenced most other languages in the general region). language production in all aspects will be important, particularly speaking if i want a career corresponding with my degree. still, i’m hoping to compromise some, given my interest in european literary traditions whose language traditions are romantic or germanic in origin. this will probably look like german/latin vocab study and reading practice—passive/written language skills, with some greek as a treat.
taking the action of writing this post has clarified my immediate goals, so i hope any language learners reading this can share in the inspiration ^ ^ and develop their own. i’m going to make a silly little schedule and plan around my current classes and commitments, with alternating focus on reading development and themed vocab acquisition. i’ll try to post things i’m learning and find cool, study resources, or satisfying spreadsheet moments. give us a follow (or don’t), and feel free to send asks/initiate conversation in my target languages (but not chinese yet ㅠㅠ)

What I learned after doing Duolingo, Busuu, Clozemaster and Babbel lessons every day for 60 days
So, a few months ago I realized my skills in German actually suck because I'd been using A1 language most of the time (I teach beginners up to B1 level), and I had not been reading or listening to spoken German other than movies and series. As a result, imposter syndrome and terrible self-esteem hit me really hard, and I decided to take action. At the moment, I can't afford conversation classes or a German course to get my B2 certificate (and I clearly wouldn't pass a B2 test). I had been doing Duolingo for years and I managed to achieve a streak of 784 days, but the German lessons were too boring for me (I had finished the entire German course, but they added new content). I didn't want to lose my streak, so I decided to start another language there just for fun (I was tired of Spanish as well), then I chose Italian, and it's been amazing so far.
After searching for some materials online, I decided to download Busuu again. I took a placement test and they told me to do the B2 course. However, I felt like I needed a recap on some topics, so I started B1 course there (I'm finishing this week!) and it helped me a lot. Interacting with others while having your exercises corrected is actually great, so as correcting people's exercises. Besides, I started a list on Quizlet to help me memorize new words and expressions.
As for Babbel, I paid for one year of German because the price was really good, and they sent me to B2 as well. I finished all the B2 contents and did the B1 courses as well, and they gave me two live classes for free. I was terrified of participating in them because I wasn't very confident I could speak to foreigners, but I did it and it was really nice. The teacher and the other participants were amazing, and the cultural exchange was very beneficial.
I discovered Clozemaster after interacting with a polyglot girl I follow on Instagram. It may be simply "fill-in-the-blanks", but it really helped me memorize some structures and also review stuff I hadn't seen in a long time.
I was feeling so awful before that I considered quitting German and doing something else (new information: I monetized my hobby and now I hate my life lol), and of course the impossibility of moving to Germany made me feel even worse. I can't apply for DAAD scholarships because I am not interested in academic studies at the moment, PLUS, I'm not getting any younger... A friend and former student recommended the Bundesfreiwilligendienst, and I am doing lots of research on that.
In conclusion, after doing all this for the past 60 days, I felt that I really improved my writing and listening skills (I had also stopped watching German tv shows because this made me really sad). I've been also searching for upper-intermediate books that can help me until I can pay for a course. Maybe next summer I'm going to Berlin for an exchange program, and then I'll try to travel to other cities and speak German there as much as I can.
