Batman had a lot of supporting characters. I think there's a ton of them we never talk about. For one thing, Jason Bard. A character I didn't even know existed until at most a year ago. But somehow he seems compelling. A young private eye who served in vietnam (since he was introduced in the 60s/70s), who now struggles with a bad leg. That's compelling. You have a physical disability represented, you could explore ptsd related to the war, and you could have some cool detective stories. Why don't we talk about Jason Bard in modern media anymore?

Also, Man-Bat. Man-Bat is so cool. Doctor Kirk Langstrom, a man who's practically s werewolf (just replace wolf with bat). He's so cool. And I think there was a tv show when I was young that said he was initially researching a cure for hearing loss (idk, i haven't seen the batman show from 2005 in many, many years). But whether I remember it correctly or not, it inspired me. Make Kirk Langstrom Deaf! He can be one of the first real big deaf characters whose powers can be actively tied to his disability (his echolocation and ability to hear frequencies compensates for his lack of normal hearing). So yeah. Man-Bat needs more representation too!

Gail's Blorbo Showdown

On the contenders:

Jason Todd is Bruce Wayne's second adopted son and second Robin who very famously died via fandom poll, although the weapon of choice was the Joker beating him half to death and leaving him to die in an exploding warehouse in Ethiopia, which he kind of took personally. He does eventually come back to life as a full on villain called Red Hood, reclaiming an old name used the Joker, although he's eventually turned into an anti-hero (the disappointment is real). I have a crush on him. The murder is sexy, actually. I don't know what else to say, all of my thoughts about this man are utterly unhinged.

Jaskier (also known as Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount of Lettenhove) is a recurring character in the Netflix show The Witcher. He's a bard and a pretty damn good one at that, and basically Geralt's PR team to boot. He's played by Joey Batey who himself is a talented musician (check out The Amazing Devil, for real) and who gives the character that lil fruity vibe we all enjoy. I am talking specifically about the Netflix version, because I only managed to read one book and my computer can't run the games.

This is petty but that's never stopped me.

In the Vox Machina campaign, Scanlan Shorthalt's resounding success in matters of tactics [this post isn't about roleplaying] was partly due to Sam Riegel's skill, and mostly due to the fact that 5e Bards are just that good. However! The "gnome bard" combo was famously chosen by Liam, after Sam, who'd never played d&d before, asked what's the silliest, least powerful and least badass thing he could play. That was his character concept. And at the time, Liam was not wrong to answer "bard". In 3rd Edition/Pathfinder, Bards DID suck, at least out of the box. You could build a strong Bard in Pathfinder, but you had to optimise to high heavens with carefully selected feats and spells and items from various sources. It didn't just happen spontaneously, and it was still nowhere near the raw power and versatility of a Wizard or Druid. Bards played support.

So at lvl 9, they started streaming and switched from Pathfinder to D&D 5e. Scanlan got an ENORMOUS power boost at that point, but Sam was still harbouring under the impression that his chosen class is not powerful or badass at all. And as they kept playing and he kept killing it (he was brilliant at it, no doubt about that!), he presumed that he was killing it with one hand tied behind his back, because he was just a silly little gnome bard. And, he emphatically wasn't silly. He was a whole-ass full caster, top tier class right there.

Pathfinder Bards are half-casters. If they hadn't switched to 5e, Scanlan wouldn't have access to 7th and higher level spells: no Mordenkeinen's Magnificent Mansion (a signature spell), no Dominate Monster (this is how he made the goristro fight Vorugal), no Reverse Gravity (big moment in the first Ripley fight), and no Wish (kind of a big deal!). Other spells aren't in the Bard list, and there's no Magical Secrets in Pathfinder: he wouldn't have access to Bigby's Hand (another signature spell), Otiluke's Resilient Sphere (how he got rid of the efrit, and Ripley), Lightning Bolt and Stinking Cloud (his standard damage spells), Polymorph (that's several giant eagles including the "now smarter" Grog (this will never stop being funny), and of course the legendary triceratops), or Counterspell (kind of an enormous deal). And all the other spells would have come later: no Seeming at lvl 11 = no cows. (What a loss! No cows!)

And it's not just access to spells, it's also "likelihood of spells to work", which depends on the DC, which in Pathfinder depended on spell level. Lower level spells had a lower chance of doing anything, by virtue of being easier to resist. And half-casters got a slower spell progression, and ended up with significantly less power overall. Whereas in 5e spell level is irrelevant, spell DCs depend on your character level, and that's that. Even (Bardic) Inspiration got a boost from the switch. All in all, we're talking about a spectacular upgrade.

So a tragic misconception happened: Sam got it into his head that he's so good at d&d that he can gimp himself and still kick ass. Well, he can't.

When he played a Rogue (no big spells, huh? no cheat sheet!) he sucked at it and he hated it. And now that he plays a Cleric and actually, actively gimps himself (he said in a 4-Sided Dive that he deliberately avoids cleric spells that others have used before in CR, which by now is most of them, and certainly the best of them), he very predictably sucks at it too (I mean relatively speaking; it's still a full caster), and he doesn't love it. The one time he was BRILLIANT was when he had a top tier class to work with, and used it to its full potential. But he thought he was gimping himself, because he was thinking of a different game/edition than the one he was playing!

I wanna grab him by the shoulders and shake him up and say my good man, you gotta stop this "I gimp myself" -> "I fail to kick ass" -> *surprised pikachu face*. CHOOSE. Either gimp yourself and accept you won't be kicking any ass, but it's okay because you enjoy roleplaying someone like that more than you enjoy kicking ass, OR stop gimping yourself and kick ass, because you do enjoy kicking ass, don't you?

Both are great! I approve either way! But choose.

I also wanna grab Liam by the shoulders and tell him "Wizard or Sorcerer! For the love of all that's green and good in this world, next time Sam asks you what class to play in D&D, tell 'im Wizard or Sorcerer!". But then I remember that next time they'll probably play Daggerheart and not D&D unless WotC makes them an offer they can't refuse, so the whole thing is moot.

Also FYI, I won't be showing sketches for every single one of these, either because I didn't draw much for them or the sketch is just too ugly to be shown publicly lol Without further ado, let's get into it!

7. Auction

Okay, so this is one part of a SUPER self indulgent concept of mine, one I'm honestly kinda shy just talking about it but the idea is, in the DC universe, I think we can all agree there's slave markets out there. And I feel like speedsters would be considered very valuable, on account they're some of the few beings who are attached to this ancient and powerful force, Barry and Eobard being especially prized due to the fact of Barry being the generator of the Speed Force and Eobard being the only known host of the Negative Speed Force in the entire universe.

So the plot is basically Barry and Eobard get captured somehow (insert convoluted explanation here) and is delivered to a slave market to be sold and become someone's trophy pets/slaves. This picture is the part in the story where Barry and Eobard get put on display for prospective buyers~

10. Bargain

This is a weird one but kinda like in the same vein of the last one, if there's a market for speedster slaves/pets, there's also a open market for any illegal, special "delicacy" meat. I think there would definitely be a belief among some races that by eating the flesh of a speedster, it would allow you to harness the Speed Force along with a host of other benefits.

I could've named this better but this is supposed to be Centaur Barry, because I love Barry and I love centaurs so naturally I had to make an AU for it. There's a whole series of pictures I would very much love to get to someday featuring Barry and the other Flashfam members as centaurs but I gotta learn how to draw horses first OTL

18. Barry Jesse

This is part of my unofficial Barry series where I draw him with a character I wish he had more screen time with, this time it's with one of his own family members, Jesse Quick! Barry and her never really had a relationship in the comics, the most we got to go off of was Jesse having a lot of respect for Barry but that's about it. In my AU, I thought it would be really fun if Barry and Jesse actually had a sort of brother-sister dynamic~

Barry is an only child and so I think it would be neat to see him have a sibling kind of dynamic with other peers of the Flashfam. Jesse would be older in my AU, more closer to how old she was in the Pre New 52 age because if she's too young, Barry would most likely just adopt her as another of his Flashlings lmao

24. Barry Superman 2

Once again with the lazy titles. I tend to reuse my old canvases so that kinda explains why I just add a number to them lol Anyway, this one is actually based on a Tumblr post I stumbled across ages ago about Clark and Barry losing their powers so they team up to investigate a case and stop bad guys using their respective skills as a forensic scientist and a investigative reporter (if y'all know who posted that, pls lemme know!!) And anyway, this was very much up my alley hah There's a handful of doodles I wanna do for this (because I can't ever just be satisfied with one drawing) where Barry and Clark navigate the hurdles of Being Human, being shot at by criminals, accidentally jumping out the window or smashing their face into doors because they keep forgetting they're depowered. It's a lot of fun to think about~

29. Battle of the fashion tastes

Silver Age Barry and Eobard duke it out, claiming they have the better fashion taste. Thad and Bart aren't impressed lol There's also a doodle about Barry showing up to Ralph's wedding in less than conventional wear. Ralph is speechless, to say the least xD

36. Cats

This is a crack doodle I did randomly one day. I'm honestly surprised DC hasn't made this joke yet cause it's really hilarious in hindsight

39. Clark reading Cinderella

This is a silly little comic that's actually based on a cute and charming Golden Age/Silver Age Superman comic where Lois leaves her super bratty niece with Clark and he tries reading her the story of Cinderella only for him to immediately fall asleep and dream of becoming Cinderella's Fairy Godfather and throwing hands with her evil stepmother. It's great, I really recommend it (sadly I don't know the exact issue number, if anyone does, please drop me a line!)

40. Compromise

Eo tries to compromise with Barry: if he leaves Barry's family alone, Barry will let Eo do whatever he wants to him. Barry agrees. The ending is...unexpected aha. Here's a sneak peek of Eo's smug rat face tho~

42. Cover Flash

This is a redraw of that one really gay Flash cover because it haunts me in the corners of my mind What was the artist's mindset drawing it? Did Joshua Williamson come up with the idea? I feel like he had to. It's just so hilarious and gay, I can't- Anyway here's Barry's looking very disturbed about having his privacy invaded

45. Crackship doodles

This is one the sketchdumps for one of my absolute favorite DC ships of all time: EoIvy. It started out as a "haha that's a cute ship" to "they are infesting my brain, the roots are so deep right now and there's no hope for a cure" askdhsgkdb I have like, a million doodles ideas for them, I just need to organize myself, and also find an Ivy design I wanna use (no hate to the Injustice design, it's... alright. Tho I prefer her having green skin over human tones)

These are about Ivy showing Eo off like the bottom bitch he is to other people, mostly Gotham Rogues, to which no one approves of lol

53. DC Barry and Itty

This is a little comic I started from before I read a lot of comics. I heard that Hal had a partner/pet Itty and at the time I didn't know how Barry really acted or if he knew about Itty, so I had him being very unnerved by him. Itty is just happy to have another buddy xD

55. DC Barry's Obsession

Oh this is a cute one. Okay so, I don't know if you played or watched the game Lego Batman: Beyond Gotham (which by all rights should've been a Green Lantern game but that's another topic for another day) Anyway, long story short, the Justice League gets hit by all the different Lantern emotions, Barry in particular being hit by the Orange Lantern Greed beam. So now you have a speedster that's taking anything that isn't nailed down, from batarangs to buildings, much at the dismay of the other heroes. Thankfully, he's still pretty reasonable even in this greedy phase, just telling him "No" is enough to make him put the stuff back.

I wanted to play with this concept cause I thought it was funny and cute to see Barry in this different kind of light. I haven't come up with something solid yet but I want to get to it sometime~

56. DC Barry's Weird Fears

Okay so, this one is a crack/silly idea I wanted to do where Barry gets affected by Scarecrow's fear toxin or maybe the Yellow Lantern fear or whatever but anyway, Barry is forced to face one of his nightmares...which, as it turns out to Eobard's surprise, isn't about his family or loved ones, but something else entirely--food. Yeah xD

I won't tell you the punchline cause I still wanna draw it someday so I'll just leave you with what's probably the best Eo drawing I ever did lol

58. DC Dad Brawls

Idk if you're familiar with the Green Lantern CGI animated series but this pic is supposed to be Hal and Sinestro fighting over who has the best daughter (in the show Hal more or less adopted Aya lol)

59. DC Eo Styles

Actually what it says on the tin, for once ahah. This is me practicing drawing Eo in the DCAU style and also experimenting with a cartoony style of my own.

I like this result a lot but I feel like it's not as stylized as I was going for. Plus it also feels a little too close to other people's existing cartoony art styles. Tho I do love how Eo looks like some rich bad guy from a cartoon who eats shit at the end of the movie lmao

66. DC Hole In The Ground

Oh boy, this is a throwback LOL I drew this back when I was a baby Flash fan and I didn't know the characters very well at all, I didn't even really like Eobard at this point

Some context: this tales place in an AU where, idk maybe Barry somehow took all his rage, hate and pain away, but Eobard is now a mentally adjusted, normal man. The Flashfam tho, hasn't taken too well to him regardless. This is a short crack comic where the kids, Wallace, Wally/Bart and Avery?? Jesse?? Take Eo to a six feet deep hole in the ground cause they needed his help. Course it's all a ruse so when Eo gets close to the hole, they push him in and try to bury him.

Don't worry, Barry got Eo out, tho not without a disapproving expression as he asks the kids if they're proud of themselves. They are xD

73. DC Nobody Wants to Save Thawne

This is also part of the "Thawne is Redeemed" AU funnily enough. The concept is a twist on the classic "villain takes someone hostage" scenario where some bad guy speedster takes Thawne as a hostage, threatening to kill him, to which everyone cheers. Bewildered, the villain then goes "OR...I'll let him go, to which everyone screams "NO"

Yeah, even good Eo still isn't liked by anyone xD

76. DC Slade's New Pet

This is also based on comic canon. In the Flash New 52 comics, Evil Future Barry makes a throwaway remark that he was trained by Batman, Slade and Lady Shiva and I have since then been utterly captivated by this idea, and I waNNA FISTFIGHT DC, LIKE HOW ARE YOU GONNA MENTION HE WAS TRAINED BY THE WORLD'S BEST FIGHTERS AND THEN NOT EVEN SHOW A FLASHBACK DO YOU HATE ME DC??! AUGH

ANyway, my pic takes place during Barry's training with Slade and what that might look like, complete with a speedster whistle. Barry's pretty much Slade's pet speedster and he's not amused about it 😂

82. DC Bleached

This is just me crossing DC with my favorite anime/manga Bleach, specifically reimagining what my favorite character, Kenpachi, would be in the DC universe. I think he would definitely be in the Yellow Lantern Corps and picks fights with Sinestro and pretty much everyone around him and getting lost. It's basically just this:

More DC furries but also with Clark this time. I tried making him into a lion cause I feel like that fits him the most (that or a bear) It...didn't come out good lol

Ayyy I get to infodump about my girl, WHOO

OK so, something to know about me is that I don't really tend to do the whole OC thing. Not that I don't love it cause I do! I love the idea of making up characters for media I'm in and seeing other people's fan characters is so fun and inspiring. The problem is, I'm just really bad at creating characters OTL

But for DC, my need for a alien speedster finally won out and I decided to just make them myself. She's still very much in the early brainstorming stages, sadly I also don't really have any art of her so far but I do have some ideas for her:

• I haven't figured out the details about her species but she's basically based on an octopus, tho I would like to take some more liberties with it. She definitely has tentacles because I especially wanted her to have those and bc she's octopi based, she also has a beak for snatching and eating prey. As for her gender, I imagine it's different for her species compared to ours, but in human terms the closest thing to what she is would be a woman. As for age, she'd be the equivalent of 40-50 years old.

• Her story so far is she has lived a relatively happy and peaceful life, successfully raising her young with her mate for many years. Eventually though, her offspring has grown up and left, her mate has either died or is off world somewhere (still workshopping this) For most of the time, she ends up alone. She struggles with Empty Nest Syndrome and tries to fill her lonely days the best she can. Until suddenly, one day, she's struck by a lightning bolt that comes down out of the sky. I think you can guess what happens next lol

• She gets superspeed and is rightfully terrified and disoriented as all hell. She has no idea what's happening and probably thinks she's either dying or cursed. It takes a long time for their Green Lantern to help her but eventually they do. Word gets back to Hal who knows just the guy to call. Cue Barry Allen.

• He meets up with and finally gives her some peace of mind and helps her accept her newfound powers. She's still very unsure but she takes to Barry a lot and forms a great relationship with him.

• Anyway, from here on it would be her going on to find her purpose in her new family of small bipedal aliens, aka the Flashfam and finally feel whole again.

• Maybe I'll have her teach other aliens about the Speed Force or smth idk, I'm still figuring things out • As for her powers, I really kinda wanted her to utilize the Speed Force differently than the other Flashes. I'm not sure what it would be but I'm sure I can come up with something

Keep in mind, some things may change but yeah, I like her a lot and I hope I can show her to you guys properly someday~

90. Deer Style

This is also based on the Silver Age, more specifically a panel of Barry carrying Eobard in a very odd way. It kinda looked like he was carrying him deer style so I'm using that as my excuse heheh

Honestly, I'm very tempted to draw a compilation of all the bizarre and often unsafe ways speedsters carry people in the old comics cause writers really got kinda wild LOL

91. Flash AU doodles

Okay so this is based on @longitudinalwaveme's AU of an someone else's AU where Kryptonians has invaded Earth and enslaved humanity, but instead of it being centered around Gotham, it's about everyone in Central/Keystone City. AUs like this really make the wheels in my head turn and I also just love a good ol' enslaving AU lmao Anyway, this was actually fanart for it, these being some What If doodles of Barry and Henry where Barry discovers he has powers as well as Eobard cause it made me really curious where he would fit in this AU, like what if he ran back in time to save Barry/stop the Kryptonians. Maybe the 25th century is still Kryptonian dominated but they have long since become more benevolent and restored a lot of humans' rights to live freely again. Maybe Kryptonian and humans live among each other. Idk, it's so intriguing to think about~

101. Eo Medieval

This is one idea I had for how Eo could possibly be reinvented for Dark Knight Of Steel, that fantasy/Medieval Elseworld comic DC has going around.

While I'm very grateful the comic at least briefly mentions them and DOESN'T kill them off horribly (the standard for us Flash fans are so low OTL) I was very disappointed in how little we get of speedsters in this universe. Like, you could do SO MUCH with them, their lore allows a lot of room for some fun and cool reinterpretation but alas, I guess I'll have to do it myself

For this one, I wanted to play off the concept of Eobard being a teacher. I thought maybe he could be a Professor who's shrouded in mystery, a cryptic who holds the knowledge of future events that will unfold. He is almost always seen with his students, a group of misfit children he may or may not have saved from less desirable situations. His goals are unknown but he seems to delight in turning kingdoms against each other.

That's pretty much all I have for him. I also don't really know how Barry fits in this AU but I guess we'll see~

108. Eo Wants Commitment

A What If concept where Eo and Barry were partners before everything went south. Eo's proposing that since they worked together for awhile now, he and Barry should finally "tie the knot", ie becoming exclusive superhero partners to each other. Like a marriage but totally platonic, lol

115. EoBeth

OK so I'm pretty sure I'm one of like, two people on this whole site that cares about Beth Arden and wanna see her make a comeback in Flash lore.

Some context: Beth Arden is a one off character from Flash: United They Fall. She's a lieutenant of the Speed Force Resistance who wears the Shift armor, a specially designed suit to allow humans to be able to go up against a speedster (though she is still very much outclassed by Barry). She was a brief antagonist before turning around and helping Barry.

Her story goes that she was a pupil of Eobard's and loved him a lot (whether it's romantic or not is not clear but it seems to be the former) She helped him design the machine that would give Eobard his powers. Unfortunately when he used it on himself, he touched the Speed Force and was this driven insane and shortly afterwards he killed millions people instantaneously. He then became a tyrant who rules Central City through fear and drugging his citizens by making them crave Speed Force fixes, so they'll worship him.

Beth naturally decides the best way to deal with this is to travel back in time and kill Eo's idol, Flash (which...one, I love how home girl just immediately decided to kill her crush's hero, that's wild. Two, it's a little confusing why she chose to go back to 21st century and kill Barry instead of like.... preventing the creation of the machine that made Eobard go insane but, well maybe she figured that he would've found a way regardless idk) That doesn't work so she teams up him to take down Eobard. The whole comic is kinda an AU already honestly.

Anyways, I really liked Beth a lot and I think she has a lot of potential to be really interesting and compelling addition to the Flash mythos. She doesn't have to be Eo's love interest or anything, honestly I would love to see her maybe as a rival? Or still a pupil of his?? Idk, there's a lot of great ways to reincorporate her (tho I don't really trust modern writers to do her justice unfortunately)

116. Eo Carol

This is a pic inspired from a supervillain team up in the old comics where Eo interacted with Star Sapphire. Now, sadly the Star Sapphire in the story isn't Carol Ferris but instead a French woman who temporarily took up her mantle. Despite this, I became super fixated on the idea of Eo and Carol being partners cause like, it's just too perfect

Barry and Hal are a great friends, so why not also have some of their baddies also be buddy with each other? Make it come full circle aha

Okay, this is a random doodle of a really obscure character from Alan Scott's 1940 run. In it, Alan's friend Doiby had a sentient taxi car named Gertrude...Yeah. This isn't explained nor does Alan or Doiby act like this is bizarre or unusual in any way. I personally would enjoy seeing her make a comeback, but that's just me xD

This is a comic I did where a young GL recruit asks Kilowog to ragale him about the time in GL history when the GL humans first came along.

This comic is supposed to take a funny jab at how freaking many human lanterns there are, ESPECIALLY for the one sector/planet. I mean, I definitely get it, Green Lanterns are popular and people want to see all the cool variations of human GLs but man, at this rate they're gonna need to make a sub Lantern group called the Human Green Lantern Corps fr lol

Basically, it's that but "What if Iris got powers but when she's already married to Barry and they have the whole Flashfam?" I thought that'd be SO interesting to see and I really wanna explore that

It'd be about her finally getting to see the world from Barry's and the others' perspective. To finally get to feel the humming buzz as the Speed Force courses through her veins and reach out and blur and blend into everyone else, to feel as one with the other speedsters, to finally be able to run with her family awahhh

Fair warning though, it does have a kinda bittersweet ending so be prepared~

I really wanted to draw these two together cause honestly, it is SO mind boggling that these two haven't???? Had a heart-to-heart conversation yet??? ESPECIALLY after Flashpoint. I personally felt robbed and so I've taken it upon myself to give them their moment in the spotlight they deserve. Barry is full of regrets and Linda, after some time to soul search and to think it through, forgives Barry and they hug <3

Ok so, fun fact, did y'all know there's an official DC manga?? And that Eobard actually appears in it (not Barry for some strange reason) and fights Hal? Yeah, that's a thing that exists

Remember that Batman Lego game I mentioned earlier? Yeah, this is based on that too lol

So in the game, everyone splits up to go to the Lantern planets bases, J'onn, Cyborg and Barry visiting the planet of Nok where the Indigo Lanterns are.

Barry is still in his super greedy phase and Cyborg has unfortunately been zapped by the yellow Lantern energy so now he's absolutely terrified of every little thing. J'onn was one of the few who wasn't hit by the Lantern beams so he's pretty much the only sane and capable one here. Mom J'onn refers to him basically having to keep Cyborg from freaking out and Barry from stealing everything under the sun while also simultaneously fight off the mind controlled Indigo Lanterns and restore their power battery. Send some prayers for J'onn cause he is Stressed lmao

168. Monophobia

Ahh yeah, ok this is based on Post New 52 Flash Rebirth where Barry definitely experiences this, especially the part at his birthday party where he is consumed with the fear of Eobard killing everyone he loves. This comic is Eobard exploiting that, isolating Barry and giving him a taste of his pain. It's basically Barry whump which I love and will definitely deliver more on in the future <3

Brennan: "It's your last one you can take for this check."

Lou: *rolls dice* "Nah."

Brennan: "You go up to Ivy at school. How does Fabian approach Ivy?"

Fabian: "Hey. What's going on?"

Ivy: "What's that?"

Fabian: "What's going on?"

Ivy: "I don't know, you tell me."

Fabian: "You know, I just... I thought we started something the other night and it would be cool to get to know you better. You know, me and my friends have kinda been hitting the bricks metaphorically. You know, we're kind of on the outs, especially me and Fig, you know? We're having a lot of rubbers meeting the road, if you know what I'm saying. So, you know, I don't know, I'm just trying to broaden my horizons, socially."

Ivy: "I would say, it seems like you are trying to broaden your horizons. Yeah?"

Fabian: "It seems that way. Yeah. Is it the vibes I'm putting off?"

Ivy: "Well, I hear that you get a lot of those other little dancer friends of yours to hang out and stretch and feel your feelings together all in the room."

Fabian: "Yeah. It's, uh, it's like, uh... it's like, uh... It's like another way of like... I mean, it's a form of battle within oneself. It's honestly incredibly beautiful and important. But, you know, I'm always, you know. *stabbing motions* "I stay, you know? So I was just-"

Ivy: "You stay what? Stabbing?"

Fabian: "Stab. Yes. You and me finish each other's sentences. Crazy."

Ivy: "Nice. Well, best of luck with how important that work is. Yeah. It's nice you got a little partner, right? Student president. If it gets cold, you can wear her like a sweater, I guess."

Fabian: "Uh..."

Emily: "omg."

Fabian: "Uh, cold. That- Now that- Now I might need it now 'cause I'm feeling the chill."

Ivy: "Yeah."

Fabian: "So you don't wanna? You wouldn't wanna?"

Fabian: "I was thinking of something more structured like sparring, but you know, actually-"

Fabian: "Yeah, I think I'm supposed to be somewhere right now. I got a phone call."

Do you think that the way DnD 5e handles rests and recovering from injury is a bit odd? Do you find that things just happen too quickly in your campaign, that you're running from level 1 to level 15 in just a few short months? As a DM do you want to work with a longer time scale for your campaign, but the DMG's gritty realism rules are just too poorly thought out? Well then my homebrew rules for the adventuring week might just be for you! Just hit keep reading to see the full rules and how they affect everything from sleep to spells to downtime activities.

The Adventuring Week!

These are homebrew rules that alter the base resting rules of DnD 5e to facilitate longer time scales in campaigns. These rules also come with guidelines to altering the durations of spells and abilities to work with this longer time scale.

The Basics

The basics is that a short rest is when you sleep for the night and a long rest is taking a two days to relax unwind and tend to your wounds.

Abilities that come back on short rests come back on short rests, and abilities that come back on long rests come back on long rests.

DMs should plan to have 3-4 days of encounters inbetween long rests to give their group 2-3 opportunities to short rest between encounters each adventuring week.

Short Rests

Basic Rules

A character may benefit from a short rest once per day (24-hour period) without magical assistance. They last 8 hours and characters must sleep for a minimum of 6 hours throughout the short rest. While not sleeping, a character may perform light activities, such as cooking or watching for threats. If a short rest is interrupted by an hour or more of adventuring activities such as travelling, combat, or casting spells before the short rest is finished it must be restarted.

Hit Dice and Short Rests

"A character may spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character's maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character's Constitution modifer to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below." (Player's Handbook, pg. 186)

Exhaustion and Short Rests:

Finishing a short rest reduces a creature's exhaustion level by 1, provided that character has also ingested some food and drink (if they need to).

Sleeping in Armour

"Sleeping in light armour has no adverse effect on the wearer, but sleeping in medium or heavy armour makes it difficult to recover" (Xanathar's Guide to Everything, pg. 77)

When a character finishes a short rest during which they slept in medium or heavy armour, they can spend only up to half of their maximum number of hit dice. If they have any levels of exhaustion, the rest doesn't reduce their exhaustion level.

Going without Short Rests

A short rest is never mandatory, but going without sleep does have its consequences. To account for the effects of sleep deprivation on characters and creatures, use these rules.

Whenever a character ends a 24-hour period without finishing a short rest, they must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion.

It becomes harder to fight off exhaustion if a character stays awake for multiple days. After the first 24 hours, the DC increases by 5 for each consecutive 24-hour period without a short rest. The DC resets to 10 when the character finishes a short rest.

Notable Alterations

• The Elven Trance feature applies to short rests instead of long rests. An elf may spend 4 hours in a trance to gain the benefits of a short rest once per day.

• If a feature, such as the Bard's "Song of Rest", would normally require a character to perform an action for the duration of a short rest, they only need to perform the action for one hour of the short rest.

• Characters may short rest while long resting.

Long Rests

Basic Rules

A character may benefit from a Long Rest once per week (7 day or 168-hour period). A long rest is an extended period of downtime, at least 48 hours long, during which characters perform no more than light activities, such as reading, cooking, cleaning, bartering, playing games, or attending social functions. If the rest is interrupted by strenous activities, such as travelling over rough terrain, fighting, casting spells, similar adventuring activities, or work, totalling 4 hours or more it must be restarted. If a character goes without a short rest during their long rest, the long rest must be restarted.

"At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character's total number of them (minimum of one die)." (Player's Handbook, pg. 186)

Altering Durations

The DM has the final call on all alterations to durations, however most spells and abilites that last longer than 1 minute would need to be altered to stay balanced with an adventuring week format instead of the usual adventuring day.

Why

These alterations are recommended because spells and abilites lasting longer than 1 minute are usually meant to be able to have effect across multiple encounters. With the base rules of DnD 5e these encounters are packed more closely together, while the new adventuring week encourages DMs to space out encounters over a longer period of time. As such, it is important that durations are altered to ensure these spells and abilites last for roughly the same number of encounters.

Spells intended to be cast daily for a continuous effect

There are many spells intended to be cast in the same place or on the same creature or object daily for a set period of time to become permanent or last until dispelled.

The durations of these spells should be changed to 1 week and the frequency at which they'd need to be cast for permanency should be changed to 1 week as well. The time period over which they're meant to be cast could be left the same.

For example, the spell Nystal's Magic Aura would be changed to have a duration of 1 week, and the effect to make it permanent would only require it to be cast on the same creature or object once per week for one month (4-5 castings).

Basic Guideline

These bullet points show the original duration of a spell or ability as "X" and the reccomended alteration to its duration as "Y" for "X -> Y". While these aren't all possible durations, they are the most commonly found ones. These rules do not affect casting times.

• 10 minutes -> 1 hour

• 1 hour -> 8 hours

• 8 hours -> 1 day

• 1 day -> 1 week

• 1 week -> 1 month

• 1 month -> 3 months

• 1 year -> 1 year

Notable Exceptions

The duration for travel spells should be left mostly unaltered, as these rules do not affect travel time. This is not an exhaustive list, just some notable exceptions.

• Leomund's Tiny Hut should be left unaltered, only providing refuge for 8 hours for a short rest with these new rules.

• The Catnap spell could be left unaltered without becoming too powerful. It is worth noting that Catnap bypasses the usual once per day restriction with short rests.

• The Wind Walk spell should be left unaltered.

Workweeks and Downtime

It is worth clarifying that any activity that takes a workweek requires only 5 days of work per week, thus allowing time for long rests. Each day of work consists of 8 hours of work, thus allowing time for short rests and other activities each day.

The time it takes to craft items or perform downtime activities should be left unaltered as they're already underutilised aspects of DnD 5e.

Not to be an absolute nerd on main, but I made an Agatha Harkness D&D character sheet for funsies and she's Lvl 4 College of Whispers Bard, Lvl 16 School of Enchantment Wizard. Human, background Haunted One, with the Metamagic Adept starting feat (we play with starting feats in our group), later acquired Aberrant Dragonmark (not as lore-ish but gives us an ASI and cool sorcerer shit, and ✨animals are uneasy around her✨ also, chose a second 9th level spell slot with Greater Aberration Boon - who needs never aging when you're already an ageless witch and you're under Death's peotection).

One of her spells is obviously Find Familiar, with which she conjures a bunny (Señor Scratchy). She's got proficiency in Insight, History, Investigation; expertise in Deception and Arcana. Added a very rare Arcane Grimoire (Darkhold 🤭 also had her read a Tome of Clear Thought, which means that her DC for Wizard spells rose to a whopping 23 lol), a Broom of Flying (the witches may hate it, but I love it), and a Cloak of Billowing 💅🏻, because it's Agatha Harkness. And last but not least, the musical instrument: Bell 🔔

N52 Barbara Gordon: it’s okay if she’s not dating a character for an issue, DC.

My general ranking of characters Babs dates/crushes on and tries to date at any point during n52:

7. Jason Todd. Why. Why was this a thing. This is complete ‘I looked at you and saw Dick’ areas while Babs is grieving and the fact there are literally ANY suggestions otherwise is terribly unfortunate.

6. Liam Powell. This was yet another retread of the Jason Bard relationship, but this time with added mansplaining of why cops are valid and vigilantes are not. With absolutely no nuance over things like “actually the DC universe DOES have rules about vigilante and superhero evidence in criminal prosecutions”. I hated this guy even more than Nick St Cage.

5. Troy. this was a pointless, drunk hookup that existed entirely to show how young and fun! Barbara now was. Ranks above the two below only in that it’s not actively toxic for Barbara’s mental health.

4. Jeremy DeGroot. The flirting was occasionally cute, the relationship potential was non-existent.

3. Luke Fox. This was the definition of inoffensive fluff. Sometimes you just want to kiss someone who understands your situation.

2. Ricky Gutierrez. I actually ended up soft about Ricky. Is this a relationship that I thought had legs long-term? No. (Hah). Did it hit me in exactly the feels in terms of the work both Babs and Ricky did to make it more than just an infatuation? Yes.

1. Dick Grayson. Is their on-page relationship mostly the two of them being out of sync and not in a position to date each other, but quietly pining anyway? Yes. Is that how I like it? Hey it’s a solid flavour. (Their best issue? Batgirl #30. Take a bow, Marguerite Bennett)

Writing Notes! A Song of Thunder and Ice

I’ve gotten a few questions about writing the last chapter’s Bard fight scene , and these kind of asks make me GIDDY AF.

Prepare for a long explanation!

I ALWAYS listen to music when I write, but before that I usually spend some time walking and listening to music. The movement and music jumpstarts my thought process, but it gives me a chance to shuffle through various forms of music and see how the intended scene is going to work.

For the regular scenes, the mood and lyrics are key. Sometimes I have an idea and I just can't seem to get it to work ... then random pulls up the PERFECT song ... and I discover something new, or rediscover something I forgot and -- boom -- I can hear the dialogue and the flow of the plot moves naturally.

Other times it just doesn't happen.

That's how it happened the first time Hunter faced down the false Golden Guard. All the songs I wanted Hunter to use to kick butt just didn't work. Then a friend started talking about Pulp Fiction, and I remembered Miserlou. The more I researched it, the more I realized how perfect it was.

We've seen Hunter use Bard magic a few other times in the series, but this was his second BATTLE and he is fighting it alongside Raine who we now know was his teacher and has become a close friend.

Even though Raine taught Hunter (more than just guitar) they have distinct styles. We know that they have jammed together in the past with Steve for fun, but fighting together was a different beast.

I imagined they'd use their fox violin/palisman (whom I called "Freddie" after Freddie Mercury in a shorter fic.)

Obviously, Hunter would summon his Rickenbacker... so I began to think about how rock music and violin would fit?

I began to think about Lindsay Stirling and her electric violin, which led me down a rabbit hole of her catalog. Roundtable Rival was a real contender here ... but I wanted Hunter to use a song that was closer to the quick sharp sound he'd used in that first fight.

I also wanted there to be a weather component to it since this fight takes place during Winter on the Boiling Isles.

Thunderstruck by AC/DC leapt right out at me. Yeah. Hunter would play Thunderstruck and summon a storm.

I began listening to the opening of Thunderstruck along side several of Lindsay Sterling's Violin pieces and came across Ice Storm ... which was just TOO good a match up. Ice Storm had a similar fury to what I was going for -- it had a weather based title, and it managed to be elegant while maintaining a modern undercurrent that hit the right notes (pun intended. I'll show myself the door.)

Aside from listening to the two songs back to back, I also listened to 2CELLOS version of Thunderstruck, which is as close to an actual mashup of the OG AC/DC song and Ice Storm as exists IRL.

My WIPs

I am one of those people who have a lot of ideas and half-written things in my Google Docs.

My main project is, at the moment, called Realm of the Wishmakers. I have written the first draft of it and am currently working on my second draft.

Realm of the Wishmakers stars Taka, a half-orc woman with a dark past; Isolda, a halfling princess with a tragic secret; Raphael (Raffi), a human bard with a demon eating his soul; and Dalir, a dwarven man on a mission to save his family from his mistakes. They have all visited the Wishgranter, a deity who is dedicated to assisting their followers with achieving their greatest desires or, in many cases, realizing that what they truly needed was not what they thought it was.

Inspirations

I take inspiration from authors and creators such as: Jonny Sims, J.R.R. Tolkien, Rick Riordan, Everina Maxwell, V.E. Schwab, Erin Morgenstern, and Mathew Mercer.

My favorite book is The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.

My favorite movies are: Nimona, Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse, the Lord of the Rings films, and Treasure Planet.

I also love DC and Marvel Comics.

My favorite podcasts are Critical role and The Magnus Archives.
