Wei Ying is in pain seeing his beloved nephew interact with the object of his affections. So much complaining, yelling, and scoffing. Out of all the traits Jin Ling could’ve inherited from his late father, of course it just had to be Jin Zixuan’s skills in romance. He is definitely crushing on Lan Sizhui.

And then there’s Sizhui, bless his pure heart. Despite how Jin Ling acts around him, he sees through the defensiveness and bumbling mess. He’s always so caring and patient with the younger man. “These two will be alright” Wei Ying thinks to himself, smiling as he watches from afar Sizhui taking a-Ling’s hand into his while they continue to walk towards the bunnies.

Day 2: Blossom

Apologies for the excessive use of flowers and flower meanings. I FELL DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE OF FLOWER MEANINGS AND SPENT LITERAL HOURS RESEARCHING SORRY IF THIS IS THE MOST PRETENTIOUS THING YOU'VE READ EVER

Sizhui thinks he can break most of the major events or revelations in his life down to flowers. His first real memory of his time in the Burial Mounds was centred around Xian-gege finally managing to grow vibrant pink lotus flowers in the arid, toxic soil of the Burial Mounds and himself tasting the lotus roots for the first time after that. Of course, Sizhui doesn’t remember that whole incident clearly until much much later; Xian-gege’s unrestrained joy at his achievement, and Uncle Ning and Aunt Qing’s fondly exasperated looks towards Xian-gege, all lost to the ravages of time and a raging fever. 

His earliest memories of the time after he is rescued and adopted by Hanguang-Jun are of following him around like a little duckling as he walks like a silent ghost to the cottage that once belonged to Hanguang-Jun’s mother and the purple gentians that she so loved. Once there, he sits in silence as Hanguang-Jun (though at that time he was ‘Father���) plays a mournful melody on his guqin, full of longing for someone who Sizhui has long forgotten, as little blue forget-me-nots crept up around his feet. 

The day Sizhui sets out for Mo Village with Jingyi and the other juniors, he absent-mindedly registers a sprig of white lily-of-the-valley growing near the entrance of the Cloud Recesses. 

At Dafan Mountain, and later in Yi City, he and Jingyi make friends with Young Master Jin, Jin Ling, and he cannot help but think that despite his arrogant and brusque nature, the peony on his robes suited him well. 

After Guanyin Temple, when all his memories of being a little boy named Wen Yuan flood back into his mind, he runs after Senior Wei and Hanguang-Jun. When he catches up to them, he smells the pine-like smell of a rosemary bush nearby, and barrels head-first into Senior Wei to give him a hug. 

Sizhui, Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen are visiting Jin Ling at Koi Tower and quickly decide to head off for a night hunt in one of the villages under the Jin Sect. It’s just as exciting as always, adrenaline rushing through their veins and the uncontrollable exhilaration of working as a team to defeat fierce corpses all on their own. Wen Ning, who Sizhui knows is following them in the shadows to make sure they have back-up if they need it, does not need to make an appearance at any point of the night. Sizhui can’t help but feel proud of that. It’s as they’re making their way back to Koi Tower, a boisterous group with Jingyi and Jin Ling squabbling as loudly as ever with Sizhui trying to mediate and Ouyang Zizhen egging the two bickerers on, when Sizhui realizes it. Jin LIng has just said something ridiculous while elbowing Jingyi, which still makes Sizhui feel unbearably fond, when Sizhui finally puts a finger on what he’s been feeling recently around the other boy. Later, he wonders if it can really have been a coincidence that it is at that very moment that Jin Ling brushes against a lilac flower and yelps as if it were a ghost, leaving Jingyi laughing at him for the next ten minutes while Jin Ling’s face flushes progressively darker in embarrassment. 

A few weeks after his revelation, Sizhui is still not sure what to do about his feelings for Jin Ling. After all, Jin Ling is the Sect Leader of the Jins, and more than that...he does not know how Jin Ling would respond. Would it make everything awkward between them? If that were that case, better to leave it all unsaid, he thinks. He pets the fluffy white bunny on his lap as he thinks it over again. He’s almost desperate enough to go to Hanguang-Jun - or worse, Senior Wei! - for help, when Jin Ling takes matters entirely out of his hands. A flustered disciple comes up to him with an ornately gilded gold box in his hands. “Package for Lan Sizhui, from Sect Leader Jin!”

Sizhui thanks him, curious as to what Jin Ling could be sending over and why it’s so extravagantly packed - even more fancy and excessive than typical for the Jin Sect! He opens it and lets out a soft gasp. Inside is an exquisite comb, with intricate patterns of clouds and peonies on it. Placed above this is a single red tulip and a slip of paper. Sizhui reaches for the paper, though he’s certain that this gesture is difficult to misinterpret; there can only be one reason Jin Ling is sending him this. Sure enough, the letter reads, in Jin Ling’s usual brisk, no-nonsense script - ‘Dear Lan Sizhui, your beauty, elegance and loyalty is incomparable. I am grateful to call you my friend; I would be honoured if you would allow me the privilege of courting you. - Jin Ling.’ 

Sizhui chuckles; it seems like Jin Ling has actually learnt something from all those boring lessons on politicking and refined speech he had been complaining about. His laughter gives way to a soft smile; he has a red chrysanthemum to find.

i won’t lie one of my main reasons for shipping zhuiling and xicheng is the sheer perfection of the collections they make 

pre-sunshot (xuanli, wangxian, xicheng): yunmeng trio snatching up the top 3 cultivators of their generation and thereby claiming the top 5 spots and being quietly smug about their besotted husbands; the most desired men in the cultivation world.

post-canon (zhuiling, wangxian, xicheng): bratty bottom yunmeng boys collecting lan qiren’s nephews and grand-nephew like pokemon cards and flouncing around cloud recess destroying tranquility while their indulgent, smitten husbands keep enabling them and unfailingly ignoring lqr hacking up blood in the background because let it be known that lotus pier’s boys + besotted lans = shameless.

basically yunmeng children have a way of getting husbands who don’t just love them no; they get ultra devoted, loyal, gorgeous fighters who are also massive simps who watch them with heart eyes.

Suffice to say, Lan Sizhui's feelings toward him are conflicted.

Dee’s thoughts - Honestly, Sizhui deserves to retaliate once in a while. He is far too much of a good boy and has lost his loved ones more times than a child should. This is a great fic where he lets loose. But it is also done in a realistic way. As WWX once said, he's such a filial child and he definitely takes after his guardians. Each an every one of them.

Ju’s thoughts - This fic is that meme “aren’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you just want to go apeshit?” And so Lan Sizhui does, in a Lan Sizhui way, mind you. I love this boy and he deserves the best, having tea with JC and listening to his insults is not it, but I just love how he fights with his Lan upbringing, until his anger wins out. It’s fantastic! Also quote this time: “if Lan Sizhui thinks, sometimes, about snapping his neck under his hands, well. Nobody has to know.”

Summary:  Jiang Cheng is jaded, bitter and miserable. Lan Xichen isn't sure he can ever trust anyone again. They've always been at the periphery of each other's lives, perpetually visible but never touching, and it seems it's going to stay that way. Then Jin Ling and Lan Sizhui fall in love, and everything changes.

Thrown together as the only single men in a family full of couples, neither is exactly happy about their situation. But when two lonely people find each other, sometimes they can be a little less lonely together.

Written because both Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen deserved better, and their characters go so well together. Also I needed something to get back into writing.

My comments:  Wow, this is written by someone not yet 20 and I am VERY impressed with their grasp of emotional trauma and fucked up thinking and the way they get all tangled up in each other.

So much angst in this story, because everyone is basically filled with self-loathing and fear and anger and repression and hurt (well, focus is on Jiang Cheng and Lan XiChen, but also includes family dynamics between all the individuals -- the three teens and Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi.

There's a conference among all the Sects to be held at Cloud Recesses, and Jiang Cheng becomes the person who goes to visit Lan Xichen each day (he's in seclusion) to report on the happenings. And they slowly start talking and getting more comfortable with each other and revealing things they haven't shown anyone else (including scars, both emotional and physical). POV is equally split between the two.

It's a long, painful slog. Jiang Cheng hates himself and papers over it with rage. He's really convinced that he's not worth loving, and that everyone he does love will eventually realize that he's 'not enough' and leave him. He's pretty fucking lonely and substitutes everything with anger. Lan Xichen, on the other hand, thinks he can't trust anyone, that his judgment is whack (because he trusted JGY). He also distrusts love altogether, seeing how much it ruined his father and also his brother, for those 13 years, so he wants nothing to do with it.

There are a lot of hurdles to overcome. And family relationships to repair. (I love the relationship addressed in the final chapter. I don't think I've seen anyone resolving that particular rift, and I'm delighted with the way it was presented.)

Jin Ling ignores Zizhen’s barely contained laughter and squeezes through the door with all the dignity he’s capable of. Which isn’t a lot, not at the moment, but he’s trying anyway.

“It’s a bold choice,” Zizhen notes, doing his best to be polite. “It’s original for sure.”

Jin Ling glares at him. Zizhen did not go for originality. He’s dressed as a vampire, which in his case means he just had to add a cloak and some cheap fake fangs to his usual clothes. Jin Ling would mock him for putting so little effort into his disguise, but since he did recognise a vampire, he can’t really criticise. 

“Shut up,” Jin Ling hisses, glaring at his friends. The holes for his eyes are too small to see well, so it’s unlikely Zizhen even notices he’s being glared at, but the intention is there. “Where’s Sizhui?”

“He went out to call his dads, he’ll be back soon,” Zizhen explains. “If you want, you can go put your present in the guest bedroom in the meanwhile. You know where it is, right?”

Jin Ling does know. He’s come here quite a few times, between Wei Wuxian being an old family friend and Sizhui so kindly offering to tutor Jin Ling for his history classes. He knows exactly where the guest bedroom is, and it would be very easy to get there if there were less people (Sizhui is popular, and his house is big and perfect for a large party) and if Jin Ling’s costume were just a touch less annoying. He bumps into three Jiangshi, spills the drink of a fox spirit, and nearly falls on the floor with a Cleopatra, before he finally reaches the door of the guest room. Then, because his life didn’t suck enough yet, Jin Ling misses the fucking door when he first tries to get inside and hits the doorframe with his face instead.

On one hand, the costume prevents him from hurting himself. On the other hand, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place if he weren’t wearing this stupid costume.

On the bed of the guest room, there’s a pile of presents in pretty giftwraps and bags. All of them clearly inferior to what Jin Ling got for Sizhui’s birthday, obviously. So Jin Ling places his gift in a good position, so it’s sure to be among the first that Sizhui will open when they get to that part of the party. It’s all part of Jin Ling’s very careful plan for the evening, and…

“Oh, you’re right, someone else has arrived,” a too familiar voice says behind him. “What a sweet costume!”

Jin Ling’s heart starts racing in his chest as he turns around to greet Sizhui. It’s useless to smile, but he does so anyway, because it’s Sizhui, and Jin Ling is incapable of not smiling around him.

And yet his smile drops when he sees his friend standing in the doorway, Jingyi right next to him.

Sizhui looks like he just stepped out of a period drama, with gorgeous embroidered robes and his hair elegantly tied in a bun. Jin Ling recognises a character from a popular drama that they both like and sometimes watch together after tutoring. He would be impressed by the quality of that disguise if he weren’t so crushed.

“Who’s in there?” Sizhui asks, smiling politely, leaning forward to see if he can recognise his guest. He gasps. “Oh, A-Ling, is that you?”

Jin Ling is glad the costume only shows his eyes, because his face is burning from mortification. He half wants to cry. He won’t, though, because Jingyi is right there, looking like he’s having the time of his life, and Jin Ling won’t give him that satisfaction.

“Yeah, it’s me,” he grunts. “Happy birthday.”

“Thanks,” Sizhui replies, his smile a little warmer now, though Jin Ling doesn’t really notice, too busy drowning in his humiliation. “I’m so glad you came, A-Ling! I have to go check something in the kitchen quickly, but let’s chat after, okay? Oh, do you want something to drink? I got pepsi for you, I’ll pour you a glass.”

Jin Ling nods, not that Sizhui can really see it with that stupid costume on. It doesn’t matter, Sizhui goes away, leaving Jin Ling alone with Jingyi whose western style demon costume fits awfully well, considering the circumstances.

“I can’t believe you came as a carrot,” Jingyi snickers.

“You said Sizhui would be a rabbit!” Jin Ling accuses.

Jingyi grins. “I said he considered it.”

“And you said that he said if he were a bunny and so someone dressed as a carrot, he’d ask them out on the spot!”

“Yeah, he did,” Jingyi laughs. “When we were fourteen and accidentally discovered his dad’s stash of alcohol. I can’t believe you did this. This is the best day of my life.”

Jin Ling has never so badly wanted to punch someone in the face, and that’s saying a lot because he pretty much always wants to punch Jingyi to begin with. They’re always playing pranks on each other, sure, but this time it feels mean in a way Jin Ling wouldn’t have expected from his friend. Jingyi knows about his crush on Sizhui, he knows how much Jin Ling was hoping to ask him out tonight, and now he can’t, because he’s a stupid carrot while Sizhui is a prince or something, and everything is ruined for ever.

“I’m going home,” Jin Ling hisses.

“Sure, do that,” Jingyi teases. “You should know where the door is. You’ve walked into it three times, after all.”

“Just once!” Jin Ling barks, as if that’s any better, and this time he does manage to get through the door on the first try, shoving Jingyi on his way out. His friend is still laughing, the awful bastard.

Jin Ling hates him. He hates him so much. And Jingyi, who is the worst person that Jin Ling has ever met, even counting the uncle who used him as a hostage and almost killed him when he was ten, follows Jin Ling to the front door, smirking the whole time.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Jingyi says when Jin Ling grabs the doorknob.

“I don’t give a damn what you think I should do!” Jin Ling snaps, but he doesn’t open, not yet. “Why not?”

“Because Sizhui bought pepsi even though you’re literally his only friend to drink it,” Jingyi points out. “And he gots all those snacks that you like. And he dresses up as your favourite character from that stupid show you made him watch. So if you leave, all his efforts will be wasted, and that’s a lot more cruel than me making you wear a stupid costume,” Jingyi smugly adds. “Which, by the way, I didn’t expect you to actually do, you dork.”

Jin Ling glares at Jingyi, and hesitates.

He really should know better than to listen to anything Jingyi says.

But he still stays, because he’d have to be a fool to miss even the slightest chance to spend more time with Sizhui, anyway.
