To clarify, the evidence this post is drawing from is a 1264 Polish law that decreed that Jews were allowed sell bread to Christians, implying that beforehand that was prohibited, and reactionary Christian canons instructing Christians not to buy it. From this we get the theory is that boiling the bread was a workaround (but that’s a guess). The restrictions would have been part of both general attempts to separate Christian and Jewish communities by forbidding commerce between the two, and also the usual antisemitic conspiracy theories about Jewish poisoners. Within Jewish communities, there’s no reason to think that people wouldn’t have been baking unboiled bread as well as bagels - they just wouldn’t have been allowed to sell it to Christians.
Here’s some history behind one of America’s favorite breakfast foods!
Note: There are also different myths/stories of how bagels came to be which are pretty interesting to read too!
Sources: The Book of Jewish Food: An Odyssey from Samarkand to New York. The Bagel: the Surprising History
of a Modest Bread.

Jewish Pride Always
#and probably did anyway - because when you find a law against a thing it’s usually because the thing was happening#also like. challah#I’m not Jewish btw the history in the post is just Off#Not to mention that boiled types of bread like bagels or pretzels are then also baked so if the prohibition really WAS on baking bread then#boiling wouldn’t actually have been a loophole

pls help i have been told about the maillard reaction so many times and it will not click. what kind of food does this work on
The Maillard reaction is what happens when you apply HEAT to AMINO ACIDS. This usually occurs at 280-330F (240-265C)
At higher temperatures, caramelization (sugars browning) also occurs.
At even HIGHER temperatures, pyrolysis occurs (burning/blackening)
Examples of the Maillard reaction include the crust of bread and pastries browning when baked. The Maillard reaction happens faster when it's in an alkaline environment, like when lye or baking soda is used to darken pretzels & bagels.
The browning reaction that characterizes the Maillard reaction also happens when champaign is aging, when meat or nuts are roasted, and when fruit is dried with heat. It is just Amino Acids + Just Enough Heat to Break Them Down.
Caramelization is entirely different (but similar visually and to the taste). Caramelization involves sugars breaking down, instead of amino acids.

EllAbs x Baker!Reader
Free Palestine, don't support Neil
No Minors and No men
CW: Joel lives, Abby leaves the WLF and winds up in Jackson, slow burn, eventual smut, world and relationship building for the first few chapters, read the poll prompt tagged here for context
Title: Sugar Free (1)
You watch Ellie and Dina rush down the street with a few other scouts. You were on your way to the cafeteria to drop off the lunch bread before starting the dinner load when they tore off. "What's going on?" You park the lined wheel barrel with Maria and the kitchen cooks.
"Joel and Tommy went missing." Maria braces herself on the counter. You pass her a special bag from your pack. She takes the bagels graciously.
"I hope they come home safe." You help the kitchen staff unload the still warm loaves and bagels. You then run back and grabbing the birthday fruit pies you made for a few of the kids' birthdays that landed on this day. You wanted to be sure their families had a good time with them.
-
You always keep a pot of hot chocolate ready for the local kids running around and playing in the snow. A few run in and laugh, calling out to ask if you're in. You bring out the coco and fresh soft pretzel snacks you try to keep on hand. They thank you politely before taking seats Ellie helped you restore at the newly stabilized tables.
"Are you staying warm?" You bring in little cups of freshly done cheese dip. A recipe one of the mother figures from your old settlement taught you.
"We try, then Ellie and Dina rough us up," one of the boys pouts. You brush the snow off his cap.
-
You clean up after the kids, starting your last batch for the day. Ellie special requested bagels. You take the small hike back to your house down the street from the bakery. You clean with soap and warm water, running your cleaned glass shard over the fuzz starting to come back over your mound. One last wash and rinse before jogging back to the bakery in a clean change of clothes.
You start the dough, thinking of Ellie's boobs as you knead it. Yes, you were jealous of the kiss she shared with Dina, but you knew she would always come back. She was as addicted to you as you were of her. She wouldn't ever admit it, but the way she lets you pin her against the wall in your bedroom says more than enough.
You shape the dough into rings, yank your pants down, spread your juice on the dough, then drop them on the baking shovel before putting it back in the stone oven.
-
It's dark when they get back. You shut down the shop and left the bagels on your counter for Ellie to collect. You were waiting in the seating area when she rode up, Shimmer waiting patiently as she retrieved her goods. "We have a new girl. WLF escapee."
"That sounds interesting. Where did you find her?"
"Joel and Tommy picked her up from a hoard. We helped clean up." Ellie smirks, shrugs like it was nothing. "It was awesome."
"I bet you were awesome," her cheeks flush and you fix her ruffled collar. "So, you and Dina?" Her head tilts, the smug look gone.
"So uh, you saw that, huh?" Her feet shuffle.
"I did. Was it a one off, or are you taken now?" You cup Ellie's cheek so she keeps her eyes on you.
"It was a one off. I um, I liked it, but her and Jesse are probably getting back together. So um, yeah." Ellie scratches her jaw. You watch her long fingers pick at the skin.
"I'll make you breakfast. Early shift?"
"Sounds- Yeah, sounds great!" Her lips tug upward, but you can tell she's forcing the smile. You press a kiss to the corner of her mouth. Her cheeks are red again.
"See you then cutie," you wink, drop your hand so it slides down her shoulder and bicep, and let her leave flushed.
-
Ellie comes in as you're working on the breakfast bread. You made her a special loaf to munch on for the road. Behind her is who you assume is the newbie. "Goodmorning ladies," you greet politely. Ellie takes her bread with a wave, running to her horse and Joel.
"Morning," the tall blonde greets. "I'm Abby." You offer your hand, she shakes it firmly.
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl," you smile. She's taken a back, scoffs.
"Shut up," she turns, but you catch the blush on her cheeks.
"Make me," you challenge. She glares, but says nothing. "Come sit, have something to eat. You must be starving, you got here long after the kitchen closed." You bring her a fresh loaf from the heated stone.

Wedding Date - Pedro Pascal
"Ah shit!" You put the wine bottle on the counter as you look at the wedding invitation on the fridge. Next weekend was your friend's wedding and you had a plus one when you RSVP'd with your ex-boyfriend.
You sigh and grab a glass, filling it more than half way and taking a big sip. You pick up your phone and scroll through your contacts, picking out a few names before accidentally stop-clicking on the perfect person.
"Yn?"
"Pedro! Hey, how have you been?" You lean over the counter and sip your wine.
"I've been good, Yn, are you okay? We haven't talked in a while. I'm sorry about that by the way, I just got so busy."
"Oh no worries at all Pedro. You know, to make it up to me, you could come to my friend's wedding with me next weekend." You bit your nails and waited for his answer.
"I am free, what's the dress code?"
"Black Tie, I can get you a suit if you-"
"No, sweetheart, I've got it covered. I'd like to see you before next weekend and catch up, if you're up for it." He offers and you smile behind your glass.
"Of course, Pedro. I'll text you my schedule. Thank you, thank you so much. I'll see you soon." You hang up the phone and pump your fist, sipping your wine before grabbing a bag of pretzels and heading to the couch.
You sit against the wall on the bench, sipping your iced coffee as you wait for Pedro. He asked to meet you at his favorite coffee place and you agreed, missing the ray of sunshine you had.
"Yn!" The bell dings above the door and you look up from your phone, smiling as your eyes meet Pedro's. You stand as he walks over to you, engulfing you in a big hug. "Oh I've missed you, how have you been?" He pulls away and holds your face, kissing your cheek and the both of you sit.
"So, Pedro, how are you? Or should I call you Joel Miller? You played the hell out of that role." You sip your coffee and he smiles.
"You watched?" You look at him. "Thank you, princesa. I'm really proud of it. What did you think of it?"
"I thought it was so.. beautiful. That might be a weird word to use but your acting, Bella's, oh my god everyone in that show is so goddamn talented."
You drink 3 coffees and eat 2 donuts, Pedro 2 coffees, a tea and a bagel, he paid. He holds out his hand which you grab, standing up and following him outside while holding loosely onto his fingers.
"Well.. it was lovely to catch up, Yn." He stops and turns to you, your smile identical to his. "I can't wait to be your date this weekend."
"Thank you for doing that, Pedro. It's a late ask and I totally forgot."
"No worries, honey. I'll see you Saturday." He gives you a wink before turning and walking to his car. You turn and bite your lip, speed walking to your car so you could scream about this date.
-
You smooth out your dress and turn in the mirror, smiling and putting in your earrings. You hear a knock at the front door and grab your phone and clutch, heading down the stairs and opening the door.
"Oh.. my.." You exhale slowly, taking Pedro in. From the slicks back hair with the curls poking out, glasses, suit and shiny shoes. "You look absolutely amazing, Pedro."
"I think you mean yourself, hermosa. Show me." You spin slowly with a giggle and he sighs. "I am the luckiest plus one ever." He holds out his arm and you hold his bicep as he takes you to the car. He opens your door and you get in, closing your door and he gets in, the driver heading off.
A 30 minute ride with soft conversations later you arrive at the venue. Pedro quickly gets out as he sees you reaching for the handle. He opens the door and holds out his hand, your hand gentle in his as you step out of the car.
You hold his bicep as his hand rests on his stomach. You sign yours and Pedro's names, Pedro getting a few looks and waves. Behind your sunglasses you threw glares at the women throwing him winks and flirty looks. It wasn't your place but deep in your stomach it bothers you.
He leads you to seats and wipes yours off before you sit. He sits beside you and you hear whispers, so you grab his hand and bring it to your lap, tracing his bullseye tattoo mindlessly.
The ceremony was some what long, but you always cry during the vows. You hold Pedro's hand as you head inside, grabbing a drink for the two of you. You find your names and tablet number, sitting down near the bride and groom's table. You sat with some old friends and people you weren't familiar with, introducing Pedro to them all.
You ate, chatted and laughed before before starts to play. You watch as people start to stand, dancing with friends and partners for a few songs and then the first dance happens, followed by the other dances.
"Couples, please join the bride and groom with their parents on the dance floor." The DJ announces and you stand with a smile, walking by Pedro and dragging your hand from shoulder to shoulder as you look over yours, Pedro grabbing your hand as it trails down his arm.
Your hand rests in his palm with his hand on your hip, your hand on his shoulder. "Thank you for coming, I'm sorry you're getting so much attention, I'm sure I'll be bitched at about it." You huff and he laughs, pushing his hand to your lower back and pulling you into his body.
"I'm happy you asked me, seeing you in this dress has been the highlight of my year." He hums as a shiver goes up your spine, his fingertips digging into your back.
Claps erupt from everyone around you two and you join in, heading back to your seats as they do the bouquet toss. You chat with Pedro a bit and he can't keep his hand off your knee as he watches you speak.
"Pedro, can I have this dance?" Some woman interrupts while you're in the middle of speaking to Pedro and your eyes immediately shoot to her, putting your hand on Pedro's that was on your leg.
"No, I'll dance with only my date tonight, but I thank you for your wonderful offer." The woman walks away a little embarrassed and you look at him.
"You could've danced with her, you are single, aren't you?" You ask and sip your wine, looking at Pedro whose eyes grew dark as he looks at you.
"They're not who I want." You inhale sharply with a soft smile, setting down your wine and clearing your throat.
"Did you still need the bathroom? I need to freshen up, we can find them together." You say and he nods quickly, following you to the bathroom and locking the men's bathroom door.

if there were a Steven Universe-themed cafe, what would you want on the menu?
Ya know, this would be very difficult to narrow down, even with you saying it would be a whole café with a Steven Universe theme so it wouldn't have to share with any other theme! Having made well over 150 Steven Universe recipes myself, I know there's a LOT to choose from, and it would be hard to get a good highlights reel down.
However, if you're gonna go with a Steven Universe theme in a café, you would have to be able to appeal to casual fans as well as deep Steventhusiasts. That means you would want the well known classics as well as stuff that the hardcore fans would remember, but you would also want stuff that's Gem-themed and fits the vibe without necessarily referencing specific food that's been eaten on the show! But of course, you also wanna have a good mixture of nutritious/filling food and snacky/desserty food. So you'd need a good variety!
We'd have to call our café The Best Diner in the World, of course.
BREAKFAST
Together Breakfast (Single or Family Size)
Best Breakfast in the World
Bagel Sandwiches
Biscuits & Jam ("He's the biscuit!" "And she's the strawberry!")
Waffle/Egg Sandwiches
Baby Melon
Various cereals (the show has cereals that look like Cheerios, Froot Loops, and Honey Smacks)
MAIN COURSES / SPECIALS
Fish Stew Pizza
Square Pizza
Hot Dogs / Veggie Dogs
Pizza Bagel with Fantastic Fries
Salmon Bagel Sandwich ("Perfectly Timed Afternoon Sandwich"), comes with Chaaaaps
Club Sandwiches with Gem-themed anchoring toothpicks
Amethyst's Torta (also comes with Chaaaaps)
Zucchini with Linguine
Pepe's Burgers Meal
SIDES & SNACKS
Fry Bits
Snack Sushi
Caprese Salad
Chaaaaps
Onion Rings
Breadsticks
Popcorn
Spicy Pretzels
Mozzarella Sticks (to violate the food treaty)
BEVERAGES
Sugar Shock Shut Down
Fountain Soda
Coffee
Tea
Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade
Apple Sidra
Fancy Orange Juice
Hot Cocoa
(You could put some of the beverages in cups or cans labeled "Guacola" and "Durian" but I recommend against actually making a drink with those.)
DESSERT
Donuts (Fire Salt optional, in cute tubes. Use Pop Rocks for sizzle!)
Cookie Cats
Ube Roll Slice
Star-shaped cookies
Steveny Gem-themed cupcakes
KIDS' MENU
Crying Breakfast Friends meal
Noodles and Butter
Hot Dogs
Juice Boxes (Durian design)
Macaroni & Cheese (Maybe let them mix it themselves, so they can be served macaroni & nothing)
Pepe's Burgers Kids' Meal
I have no idea what I would order. It would all be too tempting!
You'd have to have a performance stage up in the corner with a banner over it that says BEACH-A-PALOOZA and have local acts or open mic stuff sometimes, and stock the place with games (some SU-themed!) as well as having maybe a little gift shop with Steveny trinkets and coffee mugs. Yesss!

murdoch characters and what they would call tim hortons
murdoch : the full tim hortons. murdoch would call miles gilbert horton by his christian name if he could. but also deep down i think he desires a simpler time where he can say timmy’s
ogden : tim’s rolls off her tongue like it was made to be
george : tim’s, the full tim hortons when feeling extra, timothy hortons when making a point. proceeds to be shocked upon learning that tim horton’s name was in fact not timothy
brackenreid : does not go there ; has personal beef
henry : look me in the eye and tell me this man ISNT saying timmies. george objects to this spelling bc it implies that the products themselves are called timmies (singular timmy) like at least timmy’s keeps that meaning that the restaurant belonged to tim horton. henry points out that it’s spelled tim hortons w/o an apostrophe so timmies should technically be considered the correct spelling and george informs him that they only got rid of the apostrophe bc of a language law in québec and henry is like why do you care you don’t even call it that and george is like it’s the principle of things and by the time henry’s asking about his opinion on the name timbits the person at the drive thru window is sick of them bc their coffee’s getting cold
semi related remember timbiebs. henry wouldve gotten the merch.
violet : tim’s but she doesn’t go very often, she has way better options
effie : effie is such a timmy’s girlie you’d hear her say « i think i want timmy’s » and think yeah that’s such a thing she would say. truly it’s the most logical option in the world. rest in peace effie newsome you wouldve loved calling tim hortons timmy’s
watts : tim hortons or tim’s but like violet he doesnt go very often bc he knows better places to get coffee and donuts, mourns the pretzel bagel constantly
margaret : tim horton’s, way used to the apostrophe and when one she goes to frequently changes their signage she mentions it to brax who’s like why does it matter bad coffee is bad coffee doesnt matter who it belongs to lmaoooo
choi : tim hortons but only bc he hasnt been canadian long enough. in due time he will start to adapt tim’s i believe this to be true

Some of my favorite easy and fast foods/snacks for $5 or less that aren't ramen and spaghetti:
Couscous. You can get boxed couscous for like $3 and it's enough for 2-3 side dishes at least and takes literally 5 minutes and no extra ingredients. You can get large containers of it for like $5 at Walmart too so you can season however you want. A nice grain that's easy to digest and pairs well with almost anything.
Popcorn. Everyone's favorite healthy junk food that can satisfy most cravings. You can usually get a box for like $4 or a jar of kernels for like $6.
Oats. Whole oats. Extremely versatile. Put them in smoothies, make cookies, granola, snack bars/balls, brownies, oatmeal, etc. Truly the best bland fiber and filler out there. You can even easily make your own oatmilk for super cheap by blending them with water and straining!
Frozen veggies. Last for months in the freezer and usually under $2 a bag. Not great if you prefer raw veggies, but if you are fond of sautéed or roasted ones, save some money and just get them frozen.
Chocolate chips. Cheaper than chocolate bars and you get a lot more chocolate. Perfect for those cravings!
Powdered potatoes. I know I know but if you ignore the package directions and put some butter and milk and seasonings in it, you can't tell. Ready in like 2 minutes and you get a shit ton of mashed potatoes for like $2.
Vegan Mac and cheese. I'm lactose intolerant and so I will forever be thankful for the vegan movement of the early 2010s for making nondairy products easier to find and more affordable. Vegan Mac and cheese literally tastes the exact same and bakes so well. Annie's so far has been my favorite brand and they have other pastas with sauces too like squash which is so good.
Crepes. You can make your own batter for cheap but who likes all them dishes? You can find pre-made crepes for like $3 for 10.
Apples. You can find 2lb bags of these for $3 at a lot of places. I never knew they were so cheap and I go through phases where I'll eat like 4 a day.
Lunch meat. Packs of turkey cost like $4. I use turkey on so much. Bagels, omelets, salads, sandwiches, wraps, croissants, etc.
Ready to bake pastries. I'm not a big bread person but croissants ready to bake have my whole heart and cinnamon rolls can really help make a bad day a little better.
Pretzels. I'm an absolute whore for Pretzels and eat so many of these things. They're so easy to pack for snacks for class or anything really. I can't go two weeks without them.
Rice crisps. Rice cakes are great but they're big and crumbly and get stale if you don't close the bag JUST right. But little Rice crisps??? Elite. They come in so many flavors and are super crunchy and they're just super cute too and they're bogo a lot at publix.
Frozen potstickers. You can get them for so cheap and I have a giant bag of them in my freezer right now that I got for like $7. I usually get smaller portions for $4 or so though but decided to splurge and get 3lbs of them cus why not.
Frozen shrimp. A bag of extra small Frozen shrimp is about $5 at Walmart. Eat them thawed and cold or put them in pastas or rice or Soups. They're a staple in my house.
These are just a few I could think of off the top of my head. Please add to the list!

City of dreams
Janis ‘Imi’ike x fem! reader(+ big sis Regina)
Warnings: some coarse language, fluff, mentions of sex
Read other parts here!
“Hehe, congrats.” Regina grinned.
You gasped dramatically, “You knew, didn’t you?!”
“Knew? I helped her plan it. The whole gang did.”
Janis propped her phone up on the coffee table, getting up to get a snack from the pantry. “Pita chips? Or pretzels?”
“Pita chips.” You answered, eyes staying focused on the phone screen. “How is it that I had zero clue?”
“Which was good, no? You were really surprised.” Regina added on.
“I was sobbing like a baby by the time she kneeled down in front of me. I’m just lucky no one else was there to take a photo of my ridiculous face at the moment.”
“Oh, there are still photos. Even a video, actually.” Janis informed you, “There is no way I didn’t want to immortalise that moment.”
You sigh, “Very well then.” You turned to look at Janis, squinting. Through the FaceTime call, Cady and Regina were laughing. “It was something worth capturing, honey.” Janis soothed, sitting down next to you again as she opened up the bag of cinnamon pita chips. Gretchen said you guys could help yourselves to anything, by the way
“How’ve you been?” You asked.
“Same. The same, nothing’s changed.” Regina replied, “Quit being so worried, alright? Everything is going perfectly fine.”
“Can’t help it.” You admitted.
“The doctor said so.” Cady quipped.
“It’s natural for me to worry. I just— but yeah, I hear you though.
“Enjoy the alone time.” Regina smirked.
“Yeah, yeah.” You rolled your eyes jokingly, “Don’t have to worry about that part.”
Regina’s eyes went wide for a moment, “Finally answering a little differently, are we?”
“Trust me, she’s not as shy as you think she is.” Janis remarked. You smacked her shoulder, “Hey!”
Janis giggled, “You love me.”
“Yes, I do.” You sulked.
“You’re so cute when you do that.” Janis snuck a kiss to your cheek.
“You guys are too cute.” Regina sighs.
“Oh?” Janis grins. “That’s good to know.”
“Doesn’t mean I’m used to this PDA, ‘Imi’ike.”
Janis scoffs, “Oh, look who’s talking.”
“Shut up.” Regina said with a laugh.
“You shut up.” Janis retorted, pulling you onto her lap. You huffed, “What—”
“You’re mineeee.” Janis jokingly threatened, chomping your shoulder.
You couldn’t help it but laugh, “Are you okay?”
“I’m perfectly fine.” Janis rests her chin on your shoulder, bringing a pita chip to your lip. You took a bite and held the piece between your teeth. “So…how’s everything?”
“Uh, well. Everything’s fine with the baby but I’m not feeling too hot. Having to pee so much, my feet hurt, my back aches. Fun.”
“Regina.” Cady chided.
“Well, she asked me.” Regina shot the redhead a look.
“I did.” You said to Cady, “It’s fine. And I’m sorry you’re so uncomfortable but.”
“Yeah, we’re getting closer.” She smiled at the thought. “How’s the trip going?”
“It’s noon and we’re still at home so…” Janis says, her voice trailing off.
“Okay, message received.” Regina snorted, “Glad you’re having some good sex.”
“Oh God.” Cady facepalmed.
“Wow, haven’t I heard that before.” The blonde lets out a breathy laugh. “This is a sex-positive house, Cady.”
“Mm, sure. Okay, so any fun plans today? Sex aside?” Cady interjected.
“We’re seeing a Broadway show tonight.” You beamed.
“That we are. The Lion King, maybe The Notebook tomorrow.” Janis chimed in.
“I want a bagel.” You glanced at Janis.
“Then we’ll go get you a bagel.” Janis booped your nose.
You giggled, “Janis.”
“Okay, I won’t keep you guys any longer. Go have fun.” Regina chortled, “Enjoy your bagel. I want pictures.”
“Okay, Reg.” You agreed, “Will send to the group.”
————
It was always nice for you and Janis to get to experience a little bit of life together, just the two of you. The Wiener family’s Chelsea townhouse was the dream residence for the both of you, if you guys were being completely honest. But of course, you and Janis were in a completely different tax bracket. You were no longer relying on your parents for money, and you haven’t been since junior year of high school. Though you’ve always just had Regina’s help with it even prior to that, so you were pretty fortunate. Being in this house just felt right, but it could never be a permanent thing. This wasn’t your house.
“What ya thinking about?” Janis asks, joining you at the bay window.
“Nothing much.” You sighed, chin resting on your palm as you sat cross legged and looking at the fall leaves outside. “Or at least trying not to think of anything much.”
“You can talk about it if you’re ready to.” She judged gently, “I’m all ears.”
“Well…Regina is right. What they’re going through now? That’s what our future’s gonna be like.” You began, “And I’m not sure if I’m ready for the heartbreak that is a failed IVF attempt, or worse— a miscarriage. That scares me half to death. Like— what if we do everything right but we still lose the baby?”
Janis just quietly listens, a hand on your back, letting her presence be known to you.
“That’s gonna fuck me up. So bad, and how will our bodies change? Our minds? Our lives? But…despite those questions it will also kill me to not have tried, to not be able to have a child of our own that…that’s an extension of our love. And I — I don’t know what to do, Jan. I’m scared, I don’t have a clear answer. I don’t want to make the wrong choice. But as terrible as it sounds, what if I regret my choice? What if I’m not a good mom?”
“We won’t know for sure what the aftermath of our decisions will be like. But what I do know for sure, is that…with you. No matter where life takes us, whether or not we have kids…it’ll still be the best life we can live. We did our best, and sometimes, some things maybe just aren’t for us in this lifetime.” Janis says after a few seconds, rubbing your back when you sniffled. “But that shouldn’t stop us from doing the best we can to fight for what we want. It’s hard, yes. But sometimes the hardest decisions are the biggest lessons. They teach us to be strong…or to be stronger because there’s still a lot in store for us.”
You just stayed silent, taking in a deep breath.
“For what it’s worth, I think you’d be an incredible mother.”
“No.” You disagreed, chuckling tearfully, “I’m still afraid I’d end up like my mother.”
“If you’re afraid, you’re aware. You won’t be like her. You, y/n…you’re your own person. You might not trust yourself in some moments, and that’s okay. We’re human. But, trust me. I see you everyday the way I see you. And I know you. So…believe me when I tell you that.”
You looked at her, still teary eyed but the crying had just begun. Pulling her into a hug, she kisses your cheek on the way. “We got this, okay? Promise. We’ll go through it all, together. Just like we are now, and just like we have been.”
You nodded firmly, drying your tears. But Janis pulls you right back in for a longer hug.
After you and Janis have arrived back in Chicago, you two were picked up by Cady. “Hi, sweetheart.” Cady hugged you first.
“Hey.” You gave her a smile.
“Hi, Janis.” Cady hugged her too.
“What’s up?” The brunette chuckles, “Good to be back.”
“I did not wanna leave.” You laughed at the thought as the three of you headed to the parking structure for the car.
“That’s true.” Janis confirmed.
“Well, it is very nice over there so, I get it.” Cady hummed, “Alrighty, get in the car and let’s go home.”
Regina was beyond thrilled to see you again after your two-week absence. “I’ve missed you too, Reg.” You were kind of stood frozen thanks to her sudden affection. Yeah, you still were not top used to this side of her yet.
“Hey, G.” Janis bit back a laugh, “How are ya?”
“Meh, you guys know how it’s been so I’m not gonna repeat it.” Regina answered.
“You have an appointment tomorrow, right?”
“Yes, I do. You actually remembered?”
“Of course.” You nodded swiftly.
“Anyway, how are you two doing with wedding planning? Started yet?” Regina asked.
“Not yet.” You sighed.
“Okay, did something happen…?” Regina squinted at you.
“No.” You quickly lied. You weren’t about to tell your pregnant sister about the breakdown you had over your own future and the possibility of wanting to be pregnant. Or not. You still didn’t know for sure. “I’m gonna take a shower. You wanna come with me, Jan?”
“Uh, sure!” The girl narrowed her eyes at you, slightly worried by your avoidance of that question from Regina. She knew your sister would definitely press you for answers. But she was more concerned about you.
While you were taking out a set of clothes from the wardrobe, you hear Janis walking up behind you. You know what was coming, and you did not want to talk about it again. You knew this was on you to work through. And you knew you had a great support system, but as always…some days will be harder than others. Well, the past couple of days have been some days’. You’ve given your future a lot of thought, but the matter of starting a family was still a big question mark.
“Hey, deep breaths, honey.” She had a hand on your shoulder, “Everything’s okay. Listen to me— everything is okay. Just breathe.”
“I’m trying.” You sighed, “I’m trying. Why is it bothering me so much? Oh my God.”
She hugs you, “We’ll make it through just fine. Right now, just focus on your shower, put on your favourite playlist and get freshened up. Hm?”
You nodded firmly, determined to get out of this little ‘mood’. “Okay.”
“Okay.” She pecks your cheek, “And after you’re done, we’re gonna make some dinner together, yeah? Let’s do something.”
“Sounds good.” You agreed, giving her a kiss in return before you disappeared into the bathroom.
Janis exits the bedroom once she hears the tap being turned on, and the beat of your favourite song. “Is she okay?”
“She will be, don’t worry about that. She’s got it.”
“Make sure she goes to her therapy appointments.” Regina says with a nod.
“Always.” Janis answered seriously, “Alright— any requests for dinner?”
“Um, anything honestly is great when you cook.”
“Way to flatter me.” Janis bursts out laughing, “You wanna suggest a cuisine at least?”
“Please, you can make a salad taste good.” Regina scoffed, “Cook whatever you want. But if you insist, use only what we have in the fridge and pantry right now.”
“That works too,” Janis chuckles, walking towards the kitchen, “Let’s see what we end up with, eh?”
“Looking forward to it.” Regina smirked.
“Do you trust your sister in the kitchen?”
“What?” Regina looks at the brunette, bewildered, “Course I do.”
“Kidding.” Janis quickly chimed in. “Just saying…”
“She can cook together with you, alright? She’s perfectly capable of that.” Regina laughs, pulling a face at the Hawaiian. By the time Janis finished setting up everything, you were fresh out of the shower. “Hi, love.” Janis’ face lit up.
“Hey.” Your smile mirrored hers. “What are you cooking tonight?”
“G, how are you with salmon?” Asked Janis.
“I’m fine, I can eat it now.” Regina confirmed.
“Great!” Janis says, “and y/n, I know. No fish for you.”
You smiled, “Are we doing rice or something else?”
“Yeah, rice.” Janis nodded, “2 cups. That small one in the bag.”
“Okay.” You went ahead with that task while she got started on hers.
“Tofu or chicken, baby?” She asks.
You decided on the former, “Tofu.”
While you and Janis worked in the kitchen, your eyes wandered over to Cady and Regina on the couch. You watched them watching a movie together, cuddled up comfortably as Cady’s hand rested on Regina’s bump. Your heart melted, that was sweet. Janis soon saw what you were looking at, too. “I know.” Janis whispered, “Cute.”
Focusing on making dinner took your mind off of the worrying. Janis always knew what to do when you didn’t. “Thanks for…um making sure I don’t keep staying in that state of mind.”
“Always gonna be here for you.” She answered simply while seasoning the salmon fillets. Turning the stove on, she waited until the pan was warm enough before dropping some butter onto it. Eventually, the teriyaki sauce-seasoned meat was sizzling in the pan and if you were being completely honest? It smelled amazing, but you just did not dare to eat fish ever again after an incident.
Janis used an entirely different pan for your tofu, just to give you a peace of mind. She’s never made a big deal out of it, it came naturally to her to do this. You didn’t even think she was aware of why you refused to eat any sort of fish, but apparently she was. After dinner, Regina said good night to you all and headed to bed. Cady helped wash and dry the dishes, while you and Janis cleaned up the kitchen. It wasn’t long before you two were in your bedroom, laptop open with a notebook and some pens in your laps.
“Let’s start with dates…gather a few then slowly narrow them down?” Janis began.
“How about a summer wedding?”
“Lovely.”
“Actually, I have an idea for the date.”
“Yeah, shoot.” Janis nodded, looking at you attentively.
“June 26th? Honestly I thought of Stitch, you know experiment 626. But anyway.” You laughed, “‘Ohana means family. Stitch reminds me of that quote, and if we’re gonna go with a summer wedding. How’s Hawai’i?’
“That is adorable.”
“Sure.” You laughed it off, “But is it good? Like, actually, would a wedding there work out cost wise?”
“I don’t think it would cost much, or at all to do a wedding on the beach.” Janis assured, “I think this is it. This is perfect. Our family will be there. My mom, Keani…I didn’t think it’d be this easy, I guess this is what we were meant to choose. It just fell into our laps, you know? It wasn’t a hard decision.”
You agreed with a nod, noting that down on an open document on your laptop. “Also, for food and beverages, my aunts and uncles can help.”
“Please don’t tell me that they’re doing that for free. We need to pay them.”
“They’re gonna insist, but we’re gonna insist harder. Maybe work it out to a discount rate instead of completely FOC.” Janis says, “I know.”
“About the whole pr—”
“Baby, we already talked about this. One thing at a time. We still have a lot to look forward to first before we get ahead of ourselves. We can think about it, we can discuss it but we shouldn’t let it take over our minds.”
With your lips pursed, you gave her a nod, “Okay.”
“Whatever we decide, nothing will change between us. Okay? Nothing bad. It’s always going to be us versus the obstacles, not each other.”
You pondered over her words, heart rate slowing down and you let go of the corner of your shirt that you were grabbing onto. “Let’s lay down, go to bed for the night.” Janis pulls you closer. “Okay? It’s time for bed.”
“Yeah, okay.” You laid down.
And, that was the end of the conversation. For now. It will come up again, just much later, and when the time is right— when you were both ready. “Good night, ipo.”
You went to sleep with a smile on your face, calm too, “Good night.”
Feeling a kiss to the side of your head, you began to drift off to sleep while you both held each other.
Were you dreaming too big about wanting to start a family? Maybe, considering the costs and efforts you two had to put into it compared to say, a more traditional means. But you knew for sure that you’ll be fine no matter how things pan out. You had Janis, and you had the rest of your little family right next to you to get through this life together. It wasn’t impossible, you just had to work hard. But most importantly, you would be alright. And you were so proud of yourself for how far you’ve come. You never thought this would happen for you…
You were getting married, to the love of your life. And you couldn’t be any happier.
