do able-bodied people not understand that if disabled people call out of work every time they don't feel good that we would call out of work every fucking day?
like honestly. what do you think being disabled means?

*sigh*
Why does life saving medication cost so much? People need to take these medications or else bad effects can happen to them. I have to take these everyday in order to control my epilepsy.
I hate our government.

Because of current frustration
Happy fuck spiderverse year.
The art direction is in part ableist.
You can enjoy the movie and still say that.
Note: it's ableist because it's using common animation and color choices KNOWN to cause seizures (and death) in audiences. This includes people who don't have epilepsy.
I will never not be bitter about this because the first movie message was about "anyone can wear the mask" when it clearly was excluding people by simply making it impossible to watch this film in a safe manner.
If you got a headache after watching that film. That's a photosensitive reaction and it means you're not immune to these effects. A movie you love should not give you a headache or dizziness or disorientation. It should not give an above average amount of people seizures.
And those effects causing these symptoms should not be hailed as the reason the film is good.
Spiderverse utilises other aspects of comic art to already stick out.
Rapid Glitch effects, large bright high contrast red and blue areas covering the screen, prolonged moving patterns, and flashing lights are not what make this film look good.

as bad as this sounds, seizures are the brain's way of telling us something is very wrong, including the posturing that takes place during the seizures, which is brainstem-driven. while some forms of epilepsy can be generally eradicated/controlled through some means (gene therapy, tumor removal, various implants, resections), the application of implants and medications defeats the entire purpose of a "cure." unfortunately, the possibility of a seizure in the population as a whole is never zero, due to the fact that not only are the seizures themselves and the posturing an indication of brain injury, trauma, infection, etc., but simply because your brain is an electric meatball and sometimes things can just go wrong. the only way you could completely fix the problem altogether is to eliminate the electrical activity as a whole, but that obviously results in brain death.

i am enjoying brilliant minds for, like, the characters and the stories and appearing to be the opposite of house md and such, but. i have been working for a hospital for too long.
what do you mean the neurosurgeon can just. declare that neuro is done caring for a mutual patient
what do you mean neuro is still in charge of the case when they discover the patient’s condition wasn’t ever neurological
what do you mean a patient flatlines and not a single nurse is in the room before anesthesia
what do you mean you have four first year neuro residents and one attending
actually, i have to break that one down
four first year neuro residents and no others? did your residency program only just start this year?? and you got four matches your first year??
four first year neuro residents and one attending? that ratio is insane. how do any of them get anything done. how does wolf have time to breathe.

everybody is all about death to big companies until it comes to sony and their beloved spiderverse, when it's that they come up with a million excuses for sending people to the hospital 🙄

where was the representation for jewish people in the spiderverse movie? this is a genuine question btw im not trying to be condescending im legit curious, as a jewish moviegoer i didnt see anything that felt like legitimate representation of jewish people or judaism at all
Your take on whether it is "good" representation or not is entirely down for you to decide, and I will fully accept any and all criticism there of! I am culturally christian after all. However, Peter Parker is a Jewish character -- always has been always will be imo -- and in the first film his wedding to MJ was explicitly jewish, and in promotional material I remember seeing him having a Hanukkah Cup rather than a Christmas Mug. I have OBVIOUSLY not seen the new film because I do not wish to die.
Of course, these things are bare bones stuff. My critique was not meant to be about whether or not it was legitimate representation or not, more that the film was inherently ableist. I put jewish in there because I know Peter Parker to be Jewish, and I wanted to make the point that there are characters who speak to people from lots of different backgrounds who are denied the ability to see this film because doing so could kill them.
That is the focus of my post, that is the major point I wish to discuss and the only one I feel qualified in having a strong opinion on. That if there WAS an attempt to accurately represent jewish people in the film, then many jewish people would not have been able to see the film. Because doing so could kill them.

Hey, I know we don't know each other, but you seem to know a lot about the topic of seizures.
If it's not a bother, could I ask you a few questions about them?
Specifically about focal seizures/partial seizures.
What is a focal seizure like for you?
I've been having these episodes for as long as I can remember that I labeled dissociation for a long time, but recently have come to find out resemble focal seizures. A few triggers are bright flashing light, and being stressed out and tired at the same time. My vision gets blurry, a wave washes over my brain (dunno how else to describe it), I feel either so spaced out I don't have feelings, or I feel extremely fearful with a feeling a deja vu, I blink a lot and lick my lips, and sometimes my hand moves on its own in repeated motions. Usually lasts about two minutes, and leaves me feeling quite haggard for hours afterwards, I usually sleep after them if possible.
I'm going to try and get into a neuro soon but it's been driving me NUTS thinking about it. Does this sound like it could be a focal seizure to you? I haven't been able to talk to anyone with epilepsy about it, and I think doing so could be enlightening, like they'd know what questions to ask to tell the difference having been through a seizure themselves.
Thank you for your time, even if you don't reply. Have a nice day.
this sounds a lot like textbook TLE focals or a generalized absence, yes. depending on your doctor, you might be labelled as "easy" or it might seem suspicious because it's "too textbook."
i just came back from a follow up that went downhill because i happen to have mood changes associated with my biggest seizures, that also clear up after the events, so i turned down antidepressants since im not currently depressed and its a self solving issue, and i have an aura, postictal state, seizures during sleep, stereotypical posturing, bro has seen literal videos of the typical events, and the moment i mentioned any kind of mood change with bigger events, he immediately slapped the mental health label on it, is ready to stop my meds, and did not set up a follow up. he was positive the appointment before that i have TLE and where it was probably coming from and now he wants to slap the mental health label and not bother. i also happen to have life stressors, as does everyone else, mine may be more so since i have insane parents and in-laws, but yeah just be really careful of that. epilepsy is a very common neurological disorder, second to headaches, but when someone isnt willing to put in the work (this guy barely asks questions and did not know that one of my recent seizures was my fault for taking meds too late and happened during my sleep), they jump to statistically unlikely conclusions that are overtly sexist and can become extremely dangerous for the patient (such as pulling a patient off of necessary meds)

I will never take the "Oh but they had to put in the seizure causing scenes in order to stay true to their artistic vision!!!" as a valid argument for why Spider-verse is allowed to be ableist.
Because A) It's mass media produced by Marvel not some funky little indy flick that'll only show in 8 Art House Cinemas globally. B) It's rated PG and therefore firmly aimed at families and children and therefore should prirotise the health and wellbeing of children.
And most importantly, C) If they ACTUALLY cared about important representation and artistic vision they'd let that Spider Punk character say fuck and call someone a cunt.
But they don't. Because it's a Mass Market Marvel Film aiming to make money off of families.
They're PERFECTLY happy for disabled people to die watching it though. And I'm just expected to accept that as okay and just part of life? Na. Fuck off you cunt.
