I just rewatched through “Super 8.”

I will never get over how good that film is.

1) It is an amazing monster movie.

It creates suspense by hiding the monster from you, when it finally shows up it is suitably horrific looking. The things it can do are horrifying. The things it CHOOSES to do are horrifying. And then… they make you care about it. Even as you are sure the main characters are about to die you are also crying for the monster. They built sympathy for one of the least human looking creatures I have ever seen. It is impeccable.

2) It is a great “kid adventure” film.

The middle schoolers feel like middle schoolers. They do dumb crap, and they fall into personality types you definetly remember from when you were 13. Every single one of them is heroic and lovable in a different way. I adore them.

The emotional drama in every scene is centered around all the things 13 year olds running around getting into trouble care about, the dumb and the rawly emotional, which draws you more and more into the monster plot as the teens are forced to pay more and more attention to it.

Even at the height of the action, they never drop their personalities, even as more complex character traits emerge, and they are still dealing with emotional beats while trying not to die, because those emotions get them through the danger rather than put them in it.

This movie was absolutely part of the pipeline from Goonies to Stranger Things, in all the best ways.

3) It is a great “movie making” film.

The main characters spend most of the film working on an amateur zombie flick for an upcoming competition. The thing that blows my mind, is EVERY TIME they introduce an aspect of storytelling or movie making, the ACTUAL FILM uses that aspect or technique within the next 5 min.

I’m talking special effects, audio, makeup. I am talking storytelling beats used to create emotion in an otherwise monster action flick.

It is a love letter to years spent as kids making junk films so that they could grow into men that make academy award winners, and it SHOWS.

Finally- even if you ignore/don’t know anything about that- if you know nothing about techniques or the history of cinema or kid adventures- it’s just a really good story.

They manage to weave several different stories about grief and how you move on to living day to day- and how that grief lashes out at all the people around you who care- and twisted it up into an action packed monster flick, where nothing is as it seems and the heroes are many but the damage is great, and people are being EATEN but only the kids have any idea what’s going on… and… just seriously, go watch it.

If you like Stranger Things, if you like Goonies, if you like Iron Giant, if you like beautiful films- you should see Super 8.

The amount of self-control that Spiderverse writers showed by planning to make Gwen and Miles a couple by the end of the first movie and deciding to leave it for the second one, then deciding to split the second one in two parts and that of course meant postponing them again... They're not just torturing us they're torturing themselves (but the ones that are actually being tortured here are Miles and Gwen), they want that ship just as much as we do.

sorry my post is just to complain but guys i literally hate adobe after effects. i can not explain to you the mental torture and how LOW it has brought my mental health because I *need* to use it for my post production class because it's "industry standard". ADOBE After Effects has made me write off the entire film and video production industry as a turn off and I never want to do it ever again.

The amount of times this has crashed on me where I lost everything? 5+ hours of work? 8+ hours of work? It's my fault for not saving sometimes but I also have auto-save on. it didn't save anything so im just left with nothing.

You want a trip to burn out town really quick? Use adobe after effects in an academic setting where you have no choice but to use this program.

I have never in my life TOUCHED a program SO TERRIBLE that it made me never want to do anything about that form of art/media EVER AGAIN

Ah someone else who has discovered the joys of Camelot (1967) a movie that I am completely normal about. Have you watched it? Because the delivery of the lines is everything and if you need someone to talk to about it I am, once again, completely normal about it. The scene where Lancelot and Arthur first meet?? A masterpiece in sharing a single braincell. And don't even get me started on the way Guenevere first treats Lancelot "have you jousted with humility lately". It's unapologetically at the top of my Arthuriana movie rank list and has gotten me to reread The Once and Future King

I've been listening to the original cast recording on Spotify but, most importantly, I've read the book of the original Broadway production (1960 libretto) and I love it?? It's a delightful little read on its own, even without having watched the musical. (I want other people to read it please it's very funny I promise)

I guess the 1967 film script won't be identical to the libretto but I assume it's fairly similar.

The scene where Lancelot meets Arthur was hilarious it made me laugh out loud. Lancelot utter puzzlement ("Gone a-Maying, Your Majesty??"). Arthur's sudden self-consciousness.

And don't even get me started on the way Guenevere first treats Lancelot "have you jousted with humility lately"

I know!! Lancelot's grating self-righteousness coupled with his complete lack of self-awareness is so funny.

And I loved the gradual tone shift. It starts out so silly and the tragedy sneaks up on you — I thought Guinevere and Lancelot's affair might be played for laughs with an oblivious Arthur but no, it turns out he's fully aware of what's going on and he's forced to watch it unfold because he's powerless to stop it? and he loves them both and doesn't want any harm to come to them even as they betray him??

(He continues talking, looking from one to the other, feverishly — painfully) — Excuse me??

and King Pellinore is hilarious, he enters the scene wearing a monocle followed by a little mongrel named Horrid and talking like a character from a P. G. Wodehouse's novel. Extremely validating because when I read that chapter in Le Morte d'Arthur in which King Pellinore first makes an appearance my first question was "is he meant to be this funny?" and the answer from this script is a resounding YES.

I think I might perhaps watch the 1968 stage production first, merely because it's available for free on Youtube (at least in the UK).

I might try hunting for a free streaming link to the 1967 film, though I don't mind renting it if I can't find it.
