Star, stop changing Tamami's design challenge (impossible).

No, for real, I think this is the fifth redesign I've done of her character. I don't know why but the past designs I've made for her just weren't satisfying to me for some reason. Some of the designs I decided were just bad or didn't suit her while the others were similar but I just didn't like how it looked (tank top, large sweater, scarf, the rainbow bracelet and a long skirt). But I...think I've finally landed on a design that I liked the most out of all the ones I've made so far. (Please let it be the last. Please, my brain and heart. I would like to settle on a design and move on!)

ANYWAYS, I used Teruya's DRA sprite as a base for Tamami since, well, she is his mom and she's about as short as DRA!Teruya (or maybe shorter, I don't know, the wiki gave me two heights for his DRA self. I decided she's about 4'8'' to 5''). So it made sense to use this sprite for her, even when I made slight adjustments to her eyes and nose by making the eyes a little wider and bigger and the nose a bit more pronounced as DRA!Teruya's nose is very small. Out of three of the five designs I've made, I kept this short hairstyle of hers with a large ahoge as I loved this style the most and didn't want to change it. I based her bangs off of SDRA2!Teruya's length and style and the back of her hair like DRA!Teruya's, but I changed the way the strands looked so that it'd look more like her own hairstyle but you can still see the resemblance between the two of them. The ahoge, though, is very much real, unlike Kojiro's and Teruya's (they canonically style their hair like that on purpose), and she cannot fix it no matter how hard she tries. So she just gave up and let it be. Tamami got stuck with the protagonist trait, even though she died before the events of Danganronpa, lol. I've never been a fan of fictional kids looking like carbon copies of their parents. Like, you have the meta-power to design these kids anyway you like and you just make them look exactly like one of their parents? Unless their look-alike appearance is plot relevant, it's just weird for them to look so much like one parent that they can easily be mistaken as siblings and has zero resemblance to the other. And that's saying a lot coming from me who looks a lot more like my Irish dad from skin tone alone, but even then people can tell that I'm at least Asian because of my facial structure and even asked as such, tying my appearance to my Filipino mom. I don't know, I just like seeing a mix of traits for the kids to have inherited from their parents, you know? So, since Kojiro already has a design with green hair and green eyes, I decided to have Tamami have a different hair color, gray and green, but she also has green eyes, just a different shade. Teruya inherited his mother's eyes while getting his father's hair. Since I headcanon Teruya to have freckles, Tamami has freckles as well and as I mentioned before in this post, I adjusted her skin tone to be more obviously tanned instead of dusty from my older drawings of her. And then there's the outfit, which is a dark gray tank top, a long denim(?) skirt, dark reddish-brown boots, a blue handkerchief scarf to match with Kojiro, and a big fluffy yellow sweater with a checkerboard pattern that is tucked into her skirt, and long puffy sleeves that hangs off of her shoulders. The rainbow stripes on her skirt and the rainbow bracelet ties her design to Teruya's as he wears a rainbow as well, and I thought it'd be a neat idea for them to have a similar love for rainbows even though they've never met (cause she died via childbirth). The thought of Teruya still inheriting some of his mom's mannerisms and traits even though they never officially met scratches my brain in a good, angsty way. I wonder what Kojiro thinks whenever he recognizes parts of Tamami in Teruya...And that's it for Tamami's design! Hopefully it'll stay this way.

Tiny characters that can beat the shit out of an enemy that's much taller than them will always be peak character design, you can't change my mind on that.

RE danganronpa not having the best writing I was talking to a friend the other day about v3 about how it sucks that they set up Kaede to be the protagonist but then killed her off because while yes, Shuichi is a very good protagonist and he’s the only one that really gets interesting character development, Kaede could have so easily been an insanely interesting protagonist if she got to live because she has plenty of room to grow since she’s very clearly scared shitless and is deeply insecure about her ability to motivate and lead the group, but she smiles through it and lies about her feelings so much that the player doesn’t even know about her creating an elaborate murder scheme. And I realized that the way to keep her as a protagonist is for there to be a way that the first trial ends and someone else is found to be the killer (for example it could be Tsumugi if she weren’t the mastermind, or maybe someone else was in the library and killed Rantaro) and they get executed and thats that. Then at the end of the chapter we get a scene where Kaede is alone in her room and sighs in relief as it’s revealed that she hatched an elaborate plan to kill the mastermind but she wasn’t found guilty, either because she wasn’t the actual killer or because she was being protected by the mastermind. And so we the player have to proceed with the new knowledge that Kaede not only wanted to kill someone, she actually went through with a whole plan to kill someone and we didn’t even know about it and neither did any of the characters. And Kaede is on edge because on one hand she has to live with the fact that she was perfectly okay becoming a killer and that she failed to kill the mastermind so the game is going to continue and someone else was unlucky and got executed instead of her,but on the other hand she’s relieved that she wasn’t the one who died and that she was given another chance to find the true mastermind and no one has to know what she did. And as the game progresses it gets more and more stressful for her because she tries to keep up the positive energy but she’s living with this massive secret and she can’t let anyone find out about what she did and she finds herself still wanting to kill the mastermind so we the player don’t know how much we can trust Kaede anymore since she’s lying to everyone including us and she can very well kill again if she wants to

Kyoko Kirigiri - Ultimate Affluent Progeny

So Kyoko's design was both kinda simple, kinda not, wanted to give her a very fine and regal kinda attitude to her but not arrogant as that's very much Byakuya's thing. Her story is that she loves her dad more than the family business and her grandpa so she abandons detective work and just uses her brain to help her dad out.

Makoto Naegi - Ultimate Novelist

Makoto is a wonderful guy, just great all around. He loves writing children's books and happy stories. This is his main coping mechanism so he doesn't have to process any negative emotions he gets, the rest he can't process… well they go into a murderous psychopath alter.

Aoi Asahina - Ultimate Lucky Student

Shoujo protagonist Aoi. Cute, headstrong, affective, competitive, these are all the traits that make her fight for her friends and clash with Kyoko (and more often than not Byakuya) in the killing game, even when all hope seems lost… she pushes through, unafraid to let tears spill from her eyes for all those lost, but pushing all the same.

Byakuya Togami - Ultimate Detective

This one, I wanna go into more lore territory, cause I kinda memed around his last desc I gave him so here goes:

"A disgraced heir of the Togami household, Byakuya lost the competition that would've secured his riches. Disdainful and bitter, he sought out to get to the bottom of why he lost, uncovering a rabbit hole in the process. By the end, he proved his sibling a cheater, but it didn't matter because by the end as he found the sweet satisfaction of uncovering secrets and crushing liars and cheaters under the weight of their hubris far more satisfying than any inheritance."

Sayaka Maizono - Ultimate Spirit Medium

So Sayaka isn't a clairvoyant at all like Yasuhiro, in fact her entire skillset is completely different, first of all she is like an actual psychic, and I based her design off of the japanese Itako, quite loosely. Very interesting group, look it up, also she'll never use these powers in the killing game because I dunno how to even approach these rituals or what they look like or how to write them while remaining respectful, so she won't do it in a killing game for the express reason of her not having the right tools available and not wanting to disrespect her traditions.

Leon Kuwata - Ultimate Swimmer

I really wanna draw him again, all these characters again tbh, and I wanna show off the patterns on his wetsuit. It's a whole coral reef under there, that anemone and clownfish bit is only one part of a whole reef stretching his midline.

Sakura Ogami - Ultimate Programmer

Sakura has installed chips into her body to help optimize her body processes and also cause why not. As for the muscles, she's an Assembly programmer, the programs she's made can run on calculators she loves it.

Chihiro Fujisaki - Ultimate Martial Artist

Chihiro's design here with the two belts is an explicit nod to his preferred martial art - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so unlike Sakura in canon who'd be easy to imagine cracking someone's skull in half with a chop, Chihiro's approach is more crawling onto someone and bringing them down to the floor with grappling like an angry halfling monk. As for the belts themselves, on his head is his final junior belt, while around his waist is his current belt, he's not a black belt yet because he's still too young for it.

Celestia Ludenberg - Ultimate Baseball Star

Celestia actually isn't a legend in this AU, Taeko is. Celestia hates that and wants to start a baseball career going international, whatever the hell that means is up to her own definition, but she wants to be remembered forever as Celestia, not Taeko. Also extra sentence, but this is the SINGLE hardest design I've ever had to deal with here, I think in the future I'll be drawing all her little accessories and I have an alt costume for her I have in mind.

Hifumi Yamada - Ultimate Pop Star

So I changed Hifumi's story as I originally outlined in the OG post with him. He was friends with Aoi all his life, pretty much his only friend at all, and ever since he was little he had an obsession with writing songs, because he was obsessed with stuff like anime openings and was content to just keep the songs to himself. It wasn't till Aoi convinced him to share some of his songs that he started his journey to success, but bc he's not traditionally attractive, his first hits were literally just… his voice being played over other more attractive singers and it wasn't until very very recently that he even performed a song of his for the first time.

Toko Fukawa - Ultimate Fanfic Writer

So while Hifumi was clearly a Doujinshi but due to weird translation, ended up as fanfic creator, Touko is straight up a FF then Wattpad then AO3 girl, who would get obsessed with this really shitty, tripe manga that she didn't even like reading. It did however have super hot dudes in it, so she wrote good stories of those characters when she got frustrated with the actual authorial content - which was always.

Yasuhiro Hagakure - Ultimate Gambler

Quite LITERALLY the never stop gambling meme personified into a guy. He can lose 3 mil on slot machines but always comes out fine because it means if he keeps gambling he'll eventually run into his 1/3 and win giga millions, what he needs to pay off his debts. It isn't just with luck though either because his personality and lack of intelligence or understanding of most the rules of the games he plays means he'll never react the way he should when getting a good hand in poker or a bad draw in blackjack, so he wins those games almost always through just… stupidity.

Mukuro Ikusaba - Ultimate Biker

She's number 16 in her gang, and is easily the most loyal enforcer and taskman of the gang. She does anything she's told, to a grim and disciplined degree not typical for hooligan bike gangers, she doesn't really desire a seat as top dog of the gang though, after all she's got school to worry about, and her sister.

Mondo Owada - Ultimate Warlord

So his relationship and Kiyotaka's is gonna be interesting, because I don't want him to be exactly like Mukuro at all, who was just sort of an all-obsessed Yandere. It's more like he's always chafing under Taka, who is less than friendly with him in this AU, really the main way he even lets Taka boss him around is because he pays incredibly well and helps keep his gang members from devolving back into the unstructured, chaotic criminal life, the same that took his brother years ago.

Oh and yeah, he still looks like Guile, as he should.

Sparkling Justice - Ultimate Killer Killer

Yeah it's a reference to Killer Killer, sue me I love the manga. He has Hajirahara's ahoge, and I thought it'd be cute to also give him a mask just like the other Makoto from a Kodaka game series (Raincode.) Also, while Genocide jack stuffs all her scissors in her skirt, Makoto keeps a truth gun with "truth bullets" as his main weapon, the gun he stores inside the big book in the chibi of just Makoto, and the bullets kept on his person as the red buttons all over his body, which he pulls out when he needs to reload.

"Kiyotaka Ishimaru" - Ultimate Fashionista

Unlike Mukuro and Junko, Mondo absolutely cannot hide the fact that he acts nothing like Kiyotaka, though this is surprisingly fine to everyone else, because unlike Junko who plastered herself onto literally everything, Mondo always obfuscated himself from the public spotlight, at most showing only his suits while he hid his face behind something conveniently placed. Which played primarily to his vision of an ultimate fashionista, who was above everyone and catered to the rich and powerful.

Junko Enoshima - Ultimate Moral Compass

This was a fun one, I decided to let her have her red hair because I believe it to be the "natural" look of her hair, while attaching little clips of dyed hair to her buns as a replacement to keep her shape sorta and keep the strawberry blonde somwehere on her. Understand that while she is the "moral compass" she is still pretty deranged, and the only reason she focuses so much on keeping everyone on their best behavior is because it's endlessly entertaining to her to make her fellow moral committee members upset when she blatantly makes a mockery of the rules while still keeping kids on their best behavior to make a point.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru - Ultimate Fashionista and Tyrant, the Iron Hand of Despair

Taka's design I wanted to sort of focus on this sort of, holier-than-thou idea, where I wanted to make him look a lot fancier and upper-class than Junko does in his standard highschool fit compared to him. I wanted him to have an upper-crust sort of look

Cuddling headcanons with danganronpa thh girls

Had the weird urge to be hugged to sleep by anime women again, so I hope you enjoy.

Kyoko kirigiri

Kyoko is the definition of neutral when it comes to cuddling, she usually doesn't initiate or mention it but just kinda waits for you to suggest to cuddle and gladly accepts it.

She doesn't have a preference when it comes to being the big or little spoon. She just lets you decide what you want to be and acts accordingly, but usually you alternate on different days.

While cuddling, she likes to talk about different cases she's working on and try to get your opinion on them. Even if you're not as smart as her, she thinks you can still help her, your presence and warmth helps her think clearer.

She's really insecure about her hands, so she 'll keep her gloves on even when you're cuddling, but later in the relationship once she tells you about them she'd start to take them off more.

Sayaka maizono

Sayaka loves cuddling, she's really clingy in general so don't be surprised if she completely randomly hugs you from behind and forces you to cuddle in the middle of the day.

She likes being the little spoon, the feeling of your arms around her never fails to calm her down.

She loves peppering you with kisses while cuddling, your face especially, she can't help it you just look so cute.

She'll sing you one of her songs to help you sleep or sometimes you even cuddle while watching a recording of one of her group's concerts. You always compliment her singing but She'll just blush and deny she's that good.

Celestia ludenberg

Celestia is not a cuddle person at all, you'll have to do a lot to convince her, or win a bet against her which is even more impossible.

During those rare times that you cuddle she likes to be the big spoon, but if you want to argue she'll offer a bet to decide that and ahe always wins of course.

She'll have someone bring you tea and pastries to eat while you cuddle. You don't have to worry about crumbs or stains, she'll have someone clean that too.

You're welcome to try and do something different with her hair but those drills are very hard to get rid off, Celeste will allow you to brush them through.

Aoi asahina

Much like Sayaka, aoi loves cuddling too, whe just loves the feeling of your bodies together and your warmth.

She also has no preference over being the big or little spoon whatever position you want her to take, she'll do it.

She always brings a box of donuts to munch on while cuddling, she'll obviously share them with you, she loves that her darling loves donuts too.

Sometimes she likes to cuddle immediately after her swim practice so she's still a bit wet and your body heat can dry her up.

Junko enoshima

Junko actually really likes cuddling, maybe even more than the other girls, you're basically required to give her a daily cuddle time as well as sleeping with her every night.

She's the big spoon, and you can not argue with her about that. If you try, she'll just hug you so tightly and so close to her chest that your words come out all muffled(it actually feels good so you don't argue after that)

She likes to stroke your hair with her long nails,she really gives the best scalp massages to ease your tension, she also likes kissing you all over your pretty face and leaving lipstick marks on it.

Her mood changes quite a lot even during cuddling she can go to praising you for what you did that day and complimenting you to talking about how she's gonna inflict despair on whoever even looked at you wrong.

Mukuro ikusaba

Mukuro is actually really touch starved she loves the idea of cuddling but is way too embarrassed and scared of you saying no that she doesn't bring them up, but when you do them she'll drop everything and wrap you in her arms.

As hinted at before, she's the big spoon she's really protective of you, so making you feel safe is her main priority even while cuddling.

She's not the biggest kisser so if you kiss her while being in her arms(even if it's on the cheek) she'll blush a lot and short circuit.

Sometimes she'll borrow one of her sister's plushies to bring to you and hope that it makes cuddling feel more comfy(she kinda has no idea what she's doing here so you have to comfort and reassure her every step of the way)

rewording a post i made a while ago just bc it was a bit nonsensical but something that definitely needs to be examined in the danganronpa fandom is how a lot of characters seem to be interpreted through one single lens of intelligence. does that make sense. like in order for a character to be “smart” in this fandom they SPECIFICALLY need to be book smart and well spoken, regardless of their talents. we gotta shape up guys .. examining other types of intelligence is FASCINATING and really highlights each characters strengths and weaknesses, and this especially applies to emotional intelligence.

like is byakuya smart? absolutely. but is he emotionally intelligent? fuck no!!!! and aoi used that against him in chapter four!!!!!!!! and even though she is misguided as all hell, tenko has the ability to understand her opponent mid-battle and use that to determine how she continues the fight (likely something other fighting ultimates do as well!!!) which is crazy. mikan is able to read facial expressions well, even if she IMMEDIATELY misinterprets this as something she personally did wrong lol. these characters navigate through the killing game differently and in some cases survive because of it, and if you want something interesting to write on it’s definitely something to be examined!!!

also straight up sometimes the fandom interprets characters who don’t speak super formally/are optimistic as dumb too which is so strange. more of the “buff” talents like mondo and fuyuhiko need to understand battle tactics and serious team management/planning in order to get anywhere in their field, but are pushed aside quite a bit because theyre these super gruff macho characters that swear a bunch. sonia as well because she's a fish out of water type of character. and yes he isn’t very well spoken and is very trusting but gonta is an actual scientist guys… i could make a whole separate post about this weird trend of pessimism being seen as smart and optimism as stupid but yeah seriously

anyways all this to say, when writing for a “dumb” character take a step back and ask just what makes them dumb in your eyes. is it because they aren’t considered academic or a scholar?? is it because they’re a “happier” character that might not be as well-spoken?? theres nuance there and this obviously doesn't apply to all of them, like clearly akane isnt super good with emotions or smarts in general, but even THEN her spacial awareness and heightened sense of perception is something that is often under-utilised in fics!! it provides a whole lot of depth to remember that a lot of danganronpa characters are very talented and well versed in other forms of intelligence than what might be most obvious !!!!!

Levi’s Former Identity: A Danganronpa Despair Time Theory

Levi is one of the most interesting characters for me, and I remember when I watched him and Eden discuss his backstory. I found it weird when Levi mentioned wanting to be a good person, since he had shown himself to be kind and caring towards his classmates. So when he said he didn’t actually care about anyone, that sentence finally made sense to me.

However, as I watched that episode, I began to ponder when I thought about another fictional character with antisocial personality disorder, and that’s when I began to realize they had a lot in common. At first, I struggled to believe the realization I came to, like I’m sure you guys will as well. After all, what I’m about to say sounds outlandish and ridiculous. But after looking through all the evidence I compiled, I do have reasons to believe this.

Personally? I believe that Levi used to be Nicole from Class of ‘09.

Now you may be saying to yourselves “But that’s not possible, those two can’t be the same person, right?”. So I ask you to listen to my argument, and by the end you will understand why I believe that these two are the same person.

Argument one, appearance

Firstly, I want you to take note of one really important thing:

The appearance. Appearance is everything you know. Arturo would be pleased to know we are currently focused on appearance.

So let’s focus on appearance.

Take a look at Nicole. Notice the following:

She has blue eyes, brown hair and is wearing blue, a cool color.

Now look at Levi and notice the following:

He has blue eyes, brown hair and is wearing purple, a cool color.

Do you see the similarities?

Now, I know what you may be thinking:

“But… they clearly have different shades of brown in their hair.”. Which is a fair argument to make, young reader, they do indeed have different shades of brown in their hair.

However, as you age there is the chance of your hair becoming lighter, and while Arturo mentioned being 18, that doesn’t inherently mean everyone else is 18 too.

So yeah, for all we know Nicole could have either dyed her hair lighter, or she could have her hair go lighter.

Furthermore, they have almost the exact same shade of blue in their eyes, perhaps from all the stuff Nicole has gone through her eyes turned more gray or she now wears contacts to disguise herself (even though she doesn’t wear glasses). They also have similar-ish shaped eyes minus the fact Nicole doesn’t have two little lashes on the bottom of hers, but who’s to say she doesn’t just grab mascara or false lashes?

So we agree that they look similar, right? Well, perhaps you’re saying “But Levi is more buff than Nicole, they can’t possibly be the same person!”

Well, from those who play Class of ‘09 would know, Nicole is a drug user. We’ve seen her take quite a lot of stuff throughout the series, so who’s to say she’s never taken steroids?

“They have different face shapes”, contour my friends. Nicole can contour up her face.

And yeah they have different genders, however who’s to say that Nicole isn’t disguising herself as a man for reasons that I will get to in a bit? And yes, I do think that Nicole is disguising herself as Levi and not vice versa, and my argument and what I believe happened will clarify this.

So appearance isn’t the problem, they have similarities in appearance and while they may be different personality wise, there’s another thing they have in common that honestly solidifies my theory that Nicole and Levi are indeed the exact same person.

Plus, we don’t know where Nicole’s originally from besides “Coastal America”. I asked the Class of ‘09 subreddit and they pointed out since she’s from Coastal America, doesn’t have a regional accent, obviously not from the west side, then the most likely state could be Connecticut.

Plus, that state is close to New York, which has a fairly high Italian population. Where the last name Fontana originates. Do you see where I’m getting at? It is very likely that Nicole’s last name is Fontana.

That’s evidence 1, they look very similar and the slight differences they do have can be explained through characters and who they are.

Argument 2: Their fault

As we know from the chapter 2 trial so far, Levi had mentioned he killed his dad. But we don’t know how he killed his dad. Technically there are many different definitions we can use here for “killed”.

And one of those definitions? Driving someone to suicide.

As long as we don’t know how his dad died, we can come to our own conclusions. While NOW we know Levi wouldn’t do that anymore because he feels a sense of duty to do “good” even if he doesn’t care about the outcome, how do we know younger Levi- the same person who killed three people (admittedly one in self defense)- would have that same principle?

He wouldn’t.

And do you know who canonically drove her dad to suicide even if we have no clue how she did it? (Not even she knows herself)

Nicole.

Even then, we can use Levi’s duty to do good as even further evidence of him and Nicole being the same person. Yeah, Nicole might not hold the same principle, but people can change as well.

We also know they both have at least one brother, and a mother, and that their families were dysfunctional and toxic. And bad influences on each other.

While yes, Levi mentioned having more than one brother, I believe he’s lying about this due to him and Nicole being the same person and very soon I’ll explain why.

We don’t know how Nicole caused her dad to kill himself, and we don’t know how Levi caused his dad to die. And would you honestly believe that Nicole wouldn’t track guys down and kill them if she got something out of it? And we know Levi NOW wouldn’t have done a lot of the stuff Nicole did… but we also don’t know about Levi's past. We know he killed people, we know he holds no remorse, but why would he care about being a good person? At some point he developed a sense of doing good for others.

What caused him to change and become the person we know him as today? Why would Hope’s Peak scout Nicole as a Personal Stylist of all things? Was Levi responsible for the destruction of the Photo Lab? What happened to the other Class of ‘09 characters?

I think it’s time for me to explain the entire story of what I think happened in order for all of us to truly understand the mystery behind Levi’s past identity.

The story on how Nicole became Levi

So back in High School for Nicole, after her dad killed herself, we know Nicole started doing drugs as I mentioned earlier. At some point however, Nicole messed up. Perhaps this was after breaking Megan and Hunter up, or this was revenge from Mr. Lorre after Nicole and Emily ratted him out. In any case, they sent guys after Nicole and in the process the guys killed Jecka, Nicole’s best friend. When they went after Nicole to attack her, she killed the leader in self defense and then went after the other guys several days later as revenge for killing Jecka. Before Nicole could go to jail however, Emily used her connections with drug dealers to get Hope’s Peak to scout her as the Ultimate Personal Stylist, as she knew Nicole looked good and everyone agreed Nicole was beautiful and pretty fashionable.

And so, Hope’s Peak agreed, and they wiped out Nicole’s past. Nicole realized she probably wouldn’t get bugged by men if she disguised herself as a man and thus she did so. From the depression of losing Jecka, he stopped caring for good, and he started taking steroids which now give him the muscular appearance. It worked, and Levi started to try and do good things for the sake of Jecka and for her memory. And that’s how we got the Levi we know and love. But was it all worth it in the end?

In conclusion, the story behind Levi and Nicole is a tragic tale, and I do hope this essay proved to you why I think these two are the same person due to being brunettes with ASPD. I feel a bit weird with this opinion because I think about it a lot. It's odd, because I do love Danganronpa a lot and it's my favorite of the things Kazutaka Kodaka's hand print is on. I love love love the series to bits, but I also have to admit that it is highly up in the air for the first two games and the anime whether or not the status quo has really shifted.

I don't want to say that it hasn't because Makoto and Hajime both fight to keep living and to continue to pursue Hope for their respective futures. HOWEVER, Hope's Peak Academy is still rebuilt and that feels like a big blunder on the story. It makes me think that perhaps we were better off without the anime and leaving things up in the air after SDR2 and the revelations of UDG.

It's a bummer... but that's why Rain Code honestly makes me so happy as a game. Whereas DR may have fallen off a little bit with its theme and messaging, Rain Code actually has its characters push past the status quo of an abusive system.

Yuma, the main character, instead of seeing no choice but to kill his Homonculus, Makoto Kagutsuchi or vice versa, instead talks to him about telling the entire population of Kanai Ward the truth about their circumstances and to let them decide what to make of it. They decide to believe in the people of the city that Makoto loves and fought to protect and let them choose what to do next as the World around them has isolated and cut them off (and probably would want them killed).

By the end of the story, everything has changed. Yomi and his abusive structure is defeated, his former partner asserts that criminals must have the rights of human beings, Kanai Ward chooses to keep Makoto watching over them and to essentially become something of a democracy. And the first Homonculus, Kurumi Wendy, with precautions from Makoto looking out for her, leaves Kanai Ward on her own to search for Yuma.

In DR, you have to search and pick apart the things that have changed in characters and the world, and some of that is quite clumsy or forgotten.

But with Rain Code, so much has changed. From characters to Kanai Ward to beliefs and trust in others as a whole. The world was proven to be capable of change because there was a person (Number One) who wanted people to be happy and for it to be so.

That's good storytelling. The quality of Kodaka's work is really, steadily improving.

by the time you got into a relationship he was aware of your desire for a more simple life — and makoto was dead set on helping you get closer to one

he would try to show you in the form of casual dates, much more than what he thought you were probably used to. he would still try to keep it fun and entertaining for the both of you though. ex. picnic dates, arcades, amusement parks

makoto would also go out of his way to introduce you to all his friends, as he hopes to get everyone to see you for who you really are, not just an ultimate student who has outstanding feats

much like makoto, hajime found your extraordinary talents quite… unnerving. but he still remained respectful upon meeting you on the island (it’s very unlikely that you’d have met in the real world given the differences in your lives). very relieved when finding out you were actually polite and unpretentious, albeit surprised. truthfully, with remarkable accomplishments like that, he was imagining dealing with someone more vain or patronizing

hajime noticed that you seemed more intrigued by ordinary things as he got to know you. made a few efforts to show you mainstream stuff he’d come across that he thought would entertain you

9S is always so curious about the world around him that he will always be happy to meet someone new, human or not it doesn't matter, even if you were a machine he will still be quite intriged by you

As he gets to spend more time and get to know better your personality 9S can't help but find it incredibly fascinating and adorable, he think that you are like how a human child would be and he can't help but want to be around you at all times. What started by fascination it quickly become an obsession, even a need to have you around or to know where you are at all times, is just that you are one of a kind and he can't help but be atracted to you and as he gets to know more about you a protective feeling towards you grows inside of him

Your naive personality matches perfectly with his inmense curiousity, he isn't more than a simple YoRHa unit, an scanner type, but with you he is more than that, is difficult to don't trust in the reliable and friendly 9S so is more likely that you start asking him whenever you aren't sure of something or even curious about something and that makes him feel inmensily happy and special, like if he is someone important, like if with you is were he belongs and he is going to protect that little paradise (growing a quite possessive over you, but he is good at hiding it)

You can be so sweet and adorable at times that it becomes even painful for 9S to be apart for you for so long, and since he will like to travel and explore the world with you he probably just end up bringing you with him around at all times, taking advantage on your naive personality and how much you trust him without even noticing, he is even insist that you should only trust him

9S has always been curious and with you it isn't going to be an exception, he wants to know everything he can about you, your past, your present and even what you want for the future, and even if you don't openly share it with him 9S will find out one way or another, so is for sure that at some point he will get to know about your past experiences with people that were just taking advantage of you and he hates it, he isn't easy to get mad but this is too much for him, he hates the thought of someone approaching to you only to fulfill their selfish desires, and he will hate it more if those memories makes you sad, although, as much as he hate it he will be more focused on comforting, also this experiences only feed his need to protect you and keep you close so anyone will dare to do something so terrible to such kind soul again, and with this he insist that he is the only one who is trust worthy, swearing on his life that everything he does is only because he wants the best for you

9S insist that he is the only one who is worth of your trust and that you should be wary of others, but the only one who is an exception to this is 2B, he tell you that you can trust her (just as he does), however even when he knows she is capable of protecting you and knows that she will do it for the care she has for him 9S can't help but worry over you and want to be with you, so most of the time you don't spend much time alone with 2B

9S is already pretty protective over you but you having such weak body just increases his worries, he wants for you to be free to enjoy all the world have to offer but the world is already too dangerous and you so weak, that just increases his need to be with you, even if you are already uset to constantly have little bruises and injuries for you how fragile your body is he isn't, and he probably will never get used to it, he does a big deal almost all the time but even when he could be panicing he is always able to help you, he had even learn everything that he can about how to help your injuries, how to fix all kind of injuries and seem to always be prepare

9S can be really energetic and excited to go in adventures with you but always treats you with care and even gentleness, you probably will never recive a harsh treatment from him unless he is in a lot of disstress and yet he will deeply apologize if it happen (even if it was an accident or you didn't get injured)

9S is already a little dependent of you for how lonely he was after meeting you, but before all the problems he had in the last fight of YoRHa and losing 2B he just breaks completely and his sanity becomes almost entirely dependent on you, his protectiveness and possessiveness only get worst and worst, here is when he is more probably to actually be harsh to you, he is so in the edge with everything that he can pass from screaming at you or at someone else for putting yourself in danger (even if it was for accident) to have a complete breakdown, apologizing to you and begging to please don't leave him, at this point you are the only thing he has in the world and he can't lose you too

Adam

Adam loves learning, specially about humans he is just so amased by it, so he won't really lose the opportunity to met someone new (specially if you are a human), it just only take him a moment to understand how it is your personality and when he does his curiosity only grows

Adam is completely fascinated by your personality, specially because this world is really hostile and in war, he can't entirely understand how you have such personality and he just want to find out, at some point he even thought that it could be a facade, the posibilities and curiosity only grows more and more until it reach the point where it isn't just curiousity but an obsession too, and even when he noticed his feelings he just accept them with open arms

Adam finds incredibly fascinating your personality, he can help but laugh softly at how naive you are, once winning your trust (because he is going to win your trust) he can tell you anything and you will believe him, although he isn't going to take advantage of that he just knows what is the best for the two of you and that is what he tells you

Adam is pretty possessive over you, not really wanting for anyone to be able to enjoy of your company aside from him or Eve (and still he always reminds Eve to be kind with you), and his possessiveness only increases with time as he get to know more about you, your past experiences with people that only take advantage of you make him angry in a whole new extent (is probably what make him get to know a new intensity of hate) but he doesn't let you see that, instead just ask for details of your experiences

Although, when he get to know about those past experiences he find it an opportunity rather interesting, he was mad at those people but more than doing something himself he tried to teach you about anger and hate, he explained to you how those people only saw you as an easy prey and taken advantage of you, and the more you deny it the more cruel he becomes with his words. He will only stop until you finally start hating those people or can't take it anymore, in any case his obsession will grow a little more, satisfied at some extent with the results (not matter how you react at the end, but he will feel bad if he end up making you feel sad) and yet this will only make his feel the need to protect you

Adam found incredibly interesting how weak your body is, he was intriged by it at first but it quickly start to be troubling for him because he hates the idea of you being in danger, he had grow to love you so much that everytime you got injured it bothers him in a way that he hates seeing you in pain, and since you are so weak and easy to get injured it reach a point where Adam can't just get away from you for so long because he start to feel anxious about you (even if you are with Eve he can't help but worry). As time pass by Adam will just end up keeping you by his side at all times, besides he loves having you around

Adam will not leave anyone have the oportunity to find, not matter if is an android or a machine, not even if is another human, whoever dares to even just get close to you is quickly vanished by him, Adam can't just take the risk of something happening to his precious little darling, or someone trying to ruin the image you have of him, he can't have that neither. However he prefer to don't be violent in front of you, and whenever he does he apologize to you for such horrifing show but it was necesary (sometimes he just ask Eve to do it, leaving him to have fun and do whatever he wants to the prey)

Adam is always gentle with you, with his touch and words, his protectiveness grows so much that it reach the point where he doesn't let you do almost anything, he does everything for you and is always by your side, he is taking care for you no matter what you two are doing and almost all the time he holds your hand and guides you, he sometimes even talks to you in a soft voice. Adam treats you like if you were a porcelain doll that could break at anytime, but he does it out of love

Adam is incredibly fascinated with humans, even with death (since he can't actually die), however the only thought of something happening to you and losing you terrified him to the point that he will rip apart in a second anything that can threat your life, without a doubt, even if that destroy his own body, he will find a solution later anyways (no matter if it was an accident or even if it was his brother, although he will just punish him because he still loves his brother)

Eve

Eve doesn't care much about you at first, for him it was enough having at his brother and meeting you wasn't a big deal (unless was his brother who introduced you to him), however he slowly start to show more and more interest on you because his brother is always busy, he slowly start to talk more about you and spend more time with you and yet it doesn't take much time for him to become completely obsessed with you

Eve likes your naive personality, he finds it rather interesting and adorable, Eve is a killing machine, he had born only to protect his brother from the androids, not that he mind but you are always so sweet and gentle with him, always asking for his opinion and hearing him carefuly, even when the smart one is his brother you even look up at him and can tell that you admire his strenght at some extent and that always makes his heart melt

As well, one of the things he loves the most of you is that you never say him no, his brother is too busy with those books and never had time for him even when he had eat all those apples, but you don't have the strength to say no even if you want, he doesn't notice when you aren't as interested or excited as him but it isn't like he mind it, he will just take your hand and drag you wherever he wants

Although, he has always been bother for how weak you are and how easy you get injured, he hates that whenever you two are hanging out or playing around most of the time you have to stop because you have hurt yourself, but he hates more seeing you in pain or being sad for being a burden to him, Eve always scold you and sometimes even raise his voice whenever you trip or get a little injured but seeing you sad by it aches his heart and end up apologizing, he always does the same and he always tell you to be more careful next time even when he knows that it would happen again because you can't help it

Eve doesn't think much of you being weak, and probably even clumsy, he just scold you like always, but something changes on him the first time he sees you seriously injured, seeing your human blood runs or your machine system exposed through an injury just trigger him in a way that nothing have done it before, not even with his brother, somehow it makes him realice how weak you actually are, how easily he could lose you and that makes him a little paranoid (and he will be even more worried if you are a human since Adam had already tell him that you probably are the only one of your kind that is still alive)

Suddenly Eve is reading and asking his brother all he can about medical information or engineering to be ready to any posibility that could happen, Eve is so scare that he gets completely ready to stop a bledding and treat a broken bone, or to assemble and change parts of your machine body (even if you are an android, he will find a way to get that information) because he is scare of something happening to you

You are his entire world, you and his brother are the only thing that matter to him, also Eve had born to protect and he is planning to do so, he isn't going to leave your side ever again, no matter where you go Even is following close behind, ready to protect you from anything and everything

Something else that will trigger him a lot is the fact that you have been taken advantage of in the past, when you tell him about your experiences he doesn't understand much at first and it has to be Adam who explain to him that those people just were playing with you for their selfish desires (because you decided to trust them and don't think bad of their actions) even if that means putting you in danger or even humiliating you, and Eve can't bare the thought of that happening to you, if those people are in this land you can be sure that he will hunt them down, if not he will hold that anger with him

From that day Eve just become fierce with wanting to protect you, he is always keeping you close to him and is trigger by every little posibility of threat, anyone who dares to comes close to you (that isn't his brother) is already a threaten for him, even if are docile machines they have to do as little as gently touch you for a moment for Eve to rip them apart and turn them into dust in a second, but he will try to hold back a little if it makes you uncomfortable or sad

Eve is dependent and desesperate, even when he is completely violent and doesn't hesitant in using anything to kill and destroy anything that can hurt you he still love you, when he is mad he can raise his voice and take your wrists pretty harsh but still is pretty obvious the fear that holds his voice or the tears that threaten to fall from his eyes everytime something happens to you, and even if it wasn't obvious enough his inmense fear and sadness it becomes even more obvious whenever he hugs you as if his life depended on it and his voice cracks while begging you to please don't leave him, he doesn't know what he will do if you leave him one day

And all of this only gets worst as he lose his brother, aside from you Adam was the only things for him, you and Adam were where he belongs and his only reason to be alive, but now that Adam isn't here his fear of losing you only increases, and his need to protect you too

Kokichi Ouma

Kokichi will never say that what he felt was something like love at first sight, although since the start he was immediatly atracted to you, he just knew you will be someone funny to mess with. It doesn't take him much time before he approach to you and introduce himself just as how it doesn't take him much time to notice how naive you are, however he will be kinda surprised and even distrust of you for that, you could easily be pretending and that is why Kokichi takes it as his personal goal find out whatever you are trying to hide

Kokichi feels an inmense curiousity that quickly grows as love and obsession without noticing, and, of course he deny it and even it frustrated him, he wants to be mad at you and he want to proof that your kind and naive personality is nothing more than a facade, so with that excuse in mind he justify to himself why he insist so much on being with you and wanting to know everything of you

As time pass and he gets to know you better is when he finally accept that you are being sincere with your innocence and naiveness, and it only take him a second to fall in love harder for you for it, he just adores so much how naive you are and he is going to take advantage of that

Kokichi is pretty possessive over you but don't like admiting it, he wants all your attention and take advantage of your naiveness to get it, saying a lot of jokes and always saying things that made he seen like an amazing and smart person person, someone funny and lovely tricking you on wanting to be with him all the time (trying to turn things so his need of having you near can go unnoticed at some extent). As well, he makes sure to win your fully trust to have a better control over you, making sure to been seen as the person you can trust the most and the only one you should trust, making sure you heard everything he say to you

Kokichi isn't just possessive, he is also dependent, he is easy to get jealous when you are spending time with others, feeling like them are trying to steal you from him, and, as well one the things Kokichi wants the most it is to be seen as funny for others and have fun so he is easily trigger whenever the good imagine you have of him is threatened or whenever you show a little bit of negative feelings towards him

Kokichi has no shame while taking advantage of your naiveness, however he doesn't want anyone else doing it, what lead him to be a little paranoid and protective over you, he is keeping a close eye to whoever dare to get close to you, even if you don't tell him he will, soon or later, find out about your bad past experiences with people who took advantage of you make him furious, you are just so inocent and sweet that it almost hurt knowing what happened to you, it even make him feel ashame of taking advantage of it too (but he swears that it was everything for innocent fun and to protect you), Kokichi is really mad about this but it would depend on you if he decides to take revenge over them, depending in your reaction to that situation and what they have done to you, it would be expressed as simple but cruel jokes to him going to Gonta or even Maki and convince them that those people are dangerous and a threaten for your safety so they would teach them a lesson

Kokichi probably make some jokes about how weak your body is and even when he laugh deep down he is terrified, at first he thought it was funny how this actually matches your personality but as the time pass and he realice that you are so weak that getting injured is a common thing for you he can't help but be scare, he had grow so dependent of you that whenever you are injured he feel like is the one that has being injured, but he won't show it, let alone in front of others

Kokichi makes sure to carry with him some band-aids and other things to help you with your injuries and always insist on taking care of them personaly, he always brush it off with jokes but in reality everytime it happens his heart race and he panics a little, he is the one treating your wounds as a way to calm down and try to convince himself that you are alright

Everytime you get a deep injury the worry is more obvious in his face, he doesn't have the head to try and hide it when he is panicing about your safety, you are the only important thing for him (even more than his orgsnization) and the thought of losing you scare the hell out of him. If someone dares to hurt you on purpose Kokichi will not doubt on take the matter in his hands a make that person pay for what they have done

Nagito Komaeda

Meeting Nagito is more probably to happen either by your hand or because of his luck and in any case he will imediatly put down himself, it doesn't even matter if you are talented or not because since the start Nagito can see that you are a hopeful person, what makes him grow obsessive pretty quickly

Nagito is convinced that you are a person who is destinated to bright with an inmense hope and, even when he see himself undeserving of even being in your presence he can't help but want to be around you, and he is really stubborn so he grows clingly pretty quickly

Nagito is really smart so it won't take him much time before understand your personality, naturaly naive and sweet and, in his eyes, that only makes you more hopeful, that naiveness only increases your bright hope making you even more perfect, for what it also make him even more unwhorthy, so for a while he will be stuck between wanting to go away from you because he probably will only bring you misfortune but at the same time he just grows more dependent of you, Nagito has lived all kind of terrifing events and someone like you, so sweet and naive, is all he needs what it lead to be even physicaly painfuly to be far from you. He will stuck between going away but being clingly at times and it won't stop until you reasure him that is okay for him to be around you (what will only feed his delusions and obsession with you, starting to actually believe that you are some kind of angel)

After meeting you Nagito's purpose on life is to help you reach the greatest hope, that is why for Nagito he is for you to use as you please and he doesn't hesitant on telling you so, but is more likely that you doesn't think much of it or that doesn't take it with the intensity he is expressing it, Nagito knows this, he is aware that you are too naive for all this mess but that is something that makes you special and he wants to protect that, Nagito doesn't take in consideration if this could bring you problems because in his mind he will be always there for you, to serve you and protect you, that is why he start to be overprotective over you, he doesn't let anyone try to corrupt your inocence

Nagito isn't an idiot, he know that people would try to take advantage of your naive personality and he wants to prevent that from happening, even when he knows that despair always brings a bigger hope the thought of you suffering from something so horrible as despair makes him feel sick, so when he gets to know that people used to take advantage of you (or even still do it) he is shocked, he take it as if he had failed you (even if he haven't met you yet at that moment), it would depend in how bad this have affected you to if he will try to take revenge on them, and probably have a mental breakdown over it (what, of course, will worsen his protectiveness)

He is already on the edge with you being in danger for your naive personality, but you also having a weak body only worsen his anxiety and worry for you, is already painfuly for him to see whenever you are sad or hurt (even if it is emotional), but being physicaly injured only make him worried sick, everytime he sees you with an injury, even a little scratch, he panics and the more it happens, the more little injuries you get, the worst he get, to the point that the fear of you dying doesn't let him sleep at night

Nagito end up trying to shield you from everything, it even reach a point where he is babying you, doing almost everything for you and walking in front of you to serve as a shield if something comes too close to you. People can thing that he is being overdramating but for him is the minimun he can do for you, and if it happen that you get injured because of his bad luck he will blame himself non stop, he will have a mental breakdown over it but one that not even you will be able to help him, he feels like he deserve to die for injuring you (even if is something small) but at the same time dying it would be a too pious of a fate for what he have done

Nagito is so on the edge, worring for your safety at all hours of the day that he, soon or later, will end up kidnapping you with the excuse of being the only safe option to asure your safety, and, even when he sees himself as nothing more than trash he will do everything in his power to assure your happines and help you bright in the biggest hope, he will investe every little thing he owns (even his life) on assuring your safety and happiness

Kazuichi Soda

For Kazuichi is love at first sight, since the first moment he lays his eyes on you he is completely mesmerize by your beauty, he feels his heart go faster and his cheeks warm and yet he is eager to aproach to you, Kazuichi tries really hard to aproach to you to be able to meet you

Kazuichi is pretty delusional, in Kazuichi's eyes you are the perfection itself, even before getting to know you and he treats you as royalty and he looks up at you as if you were an angel, and your naive and sweet personality only feeds that delusions. Even before getting to know you Kazuichi has the thought that you are pure and innocent, he sees you as incredibly pure so you actually so naive only confirms what he thought of you and even increase it, he thinks of you as an angel

Kazuichi is clingy and incredibly obsesive, is almost like he actually can't stay away from you because doesn't see why he should be away from you, even if you aren't physicaly there with him you never leave his mind and it could reach the point where if he spend much time away from you he can't even do his work for how much you are occupying his mind (not that he is complaining)

Also, Kazuichi slowly becomes more and more possessive and protective over you, is just that Kazuichi loves you too much that he hates when others are too close to you or when you put too much attention to others rather than him (he complains but never blames you), he slowly convice himself that he is the only one who can treat you the way you deserve to be treaten and that others can be a threaten, and he can't let you be in danger! Although, since he isn't too good at fighting he just opt to always be with you and save you from danger in different ways

Kazuichi already feels the need to protect you from anything and everything but getting to know about your past experiences with people that just wanted to take advantage of you make him furious, he knows pretty well how it is to be betrayed like that and it trouble him a lot that you had been through that too! (although, it may take him a little to comprehend how things were when you tell him about it, specially if you say that it was nothing), thanks to this Kazuichi grows a little paranoid, not wanting to let anyone get near you for fear of that person wanting to take advantage of your innocence, what lead him to monopolize you more and more with the excuse of protecting you

You being so weak has a doble efect on him, in one hand it only feeds his delusions of you being some kind of angel and only reasure him that you are one of a kind, completely perfect and special, but it also make him grows a little paranoid about your safety, fearing and thinking that everything can hurt you (what is only comfirmed by you being easily injured) and make him more and more possessive and protective, those ideas together leave him to reach the point where is practically babying you, doing everything for you (as long as you let him, or well, when you finally give up and leave him because he is stubborn and will never stop insisting)

At first he didn't thought much of your injuries, yes he worries about them and probably thinks that someone had hurt you on purpose, but if you reasure him or ask him to calm down he will do and try to don't think much about it (what is difficult for him since the thought of it just stucks in his mind), but at the more injuries you have his just patient runs out and is when he start to get paranoid, he has the need to protect you and since he is dependent of you he can't risk something happening to you!

Kazuichi grows wary of almost everyone and is quickly to confront anyone who do as much as push you, immediatly raising his voice and accusing that person of trying to hurt you and won't stop unless you insist enough (but he won't exactly calm down)

Kazuichi will never dare to lay his hand on you, if he ever hurts you intentionelly will only be in his worst nightmares (and even if it was a dream he feels guilt), he is always looking after your safety so if he ever end up hurting you by accident he freaks out imediatly, he is stuck between feeling like the worst person in the world, feeling like he doesn't deserve forgiveness, and don't really understanding or accepting that it was him who hurt you and try to find a culprit, although his reaction will depend in how bad he had hurt you, the worst the injury is the worst he react

Well, I know I’m bit late but here again an another analysis on Makoto ! This time, it’s a short one so I’ll put here, just below, enjoy ! If some people wants to put it on the Danganronpa reddit, all they have to do is ask me, maybe I would do it myself but I don’t think so. Here’s my gift for the anniversary !

Japan Society and Makoto Naegi

Through Makoto, we could see a critic of the Japanese society. Indeed, as we know the Japanese society is very repressive against people that want to differentiate from the ordinary folks. Japan is an extreme collectivist country that put the common good above the individualism of its citizens. While it has its great advantages, it also comes with a cost which is the repression of the individual.

This repression of the individual leads to the conformity of the society where being normal or ordinary is good. Any attempts so as to try to be out of the norm are viewed as bad, inadequate and inappropriate as it’s not the good thing to do. There exist a moral superiority which is still present in Japan. To put the common good above anyone else is what is taught from the beginning of the life of the Japanese people. The education do all in order for children to conform and to take the road of normalcy.

It’s easily observable when someone quit the enterprise he worked with to work with another. Much people have difficulties to exit their company and it’s viewed in a bad light to do so because you « betrayed » the company and you aren’t loyal to your former company.

Effectively, loyalty is also a key quality in Japan. But their is also the fact that Japan had one of the highest suicide rate estimated at 24.90% per 100 000 habitants in 2009-2010 which was already high before but coupled with the arrive of its worse recession, explains us how stressfully and tough it was.

We have also the phenomena of Gyaru or Hikikomori which show a will to break that conformity and to rebel against this society that restrain its citizens’ ego.

Now that have put a relatively basic context, I can use that context for Makoto. I think, and it’s pretty obvious, that Danganronpa at least for his two first games, is a critic of the Japanese society, especially THH where much characters have problems that concern Japan society. It’s fairly observable with Makoto in the prologue. He presents himself as an ordinary person which is for the moment, a basic description that many main protagonist slice of life character describe themselves. But there is something more in Makoto’s description of himself. Throughout his presentation, he insists on how ordinary he is and how he is so unremarkable that he is more average than the average guy. Do you see where I’m going ? Makoto Naegi in the prologue, is a perfect representation of the ideal of the Japanese citizen in Japanese society! He is normal, polite and loyal but especially normal. Like said before concerning the Japan society, normalcy is viewed as a great quality which is what ironically Makoto describes himself to be. Not to a normal degree but in an extreme degree. He fits all the case. Even if he said that he is more optimistic than the other people, that optimism isn’t shown at all in the 1st chapter except for one time which serves to highlight that his optimism does exist. He is also humble.

Moreover, like said before he has accepted that normalcy, it’s who he is. The fact that he has accepted that only confirms what has been told before. While there is some truth in what he said about himself some aren’t totally true but I’ve already analyzed this so I won’t do it here. Notice that he hasn’t talked about his luck at all, which seems to be suppressed in order for his description to fit the ideal of the Japanese society.

But throughout the story, we see different characteristics of Makoto, even in Chapter 1 where many aspects of his personality is shown whether be bad or good. Those aspects deviate from what’s described initially from Makoto. His lack of rationality, his more aggressive, impulsive side, anxiety and self-depreciation but also his lack of confidence in himself which makes him have a skewed view on his action that he considers as normal but aren’t really normal or ordinary. We can suspect that he has that sort of view because of the impact of the Japan society which restrained the flourishment of his personality, his ego.

As we progress in the story, Makoto becomes more confident, and takes a major role for the cast to survive during the trials. Not only that but his optimism nature is much more present compared to the first chapter. It illustrates a contrast between what he was supposed to be and what he describes himself to be and what he is in reality in THH. He was supposed to be a normal person, the ideal of Japan society. So to be average, discreet and shy is what he should have been but it’s the contrary that was shown to us. Not only his presence becomes pivotal to the plot but his impulsiveness, intelligence, confidence, luck and optimism but also his will to honor the death of his friends, makes him extraordinary. All of what he thought that he was, was in fact not totally true. And everything comes to a grand final where he becomes the ultimate hope, a talent beyond others ultimates, a talent extraordinary. What he thought he was, was just more than the fragments of his true self.

But what was the thing that allowed him to break from his chains ? The killing game itself. Indeed it’s this killing game that enabled him to become what he becomes in Chapter 6. The killing game is what’s break society, here the Japanese society. HPA becoming a symbol of despair is not only important for the narrative but also outside of it as HPA represents the Japan society itself. Its collapse signify not only the death of society but also the death of normalcy and the end of the imprisonment of the individuality of the person and let the true desires of people exist. Secrets, money, close people, betrayal. All of these are use as a tool to show their real persona.

In a way, Makoto didn’t change or develop during the game. Quite the contrary, he was freed from society and was allowed to show his true self. Everything, he stored, all his aspects of him, become unlocked in this killing game who reveals the true nature of everyone. So narratively, we could say that he did change and become more confident but if we adopt another angle, it was more a release of what he truly was.
