SO HERE ARE KIRK AND SPOCK'S TOTALLY NORMAL DESCRIPTIONS FOR EACH OTHER:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah- so platonic ik.
ALSO!! I found out (VIA a livejournal that told me the difference between the censored and uncensored versions of this book) THAT I- SOMEONE THAT WENT TO THE BOOKSTORE AFTER SCHOOL JUST TO GET THIS- MANAGED TO FIND THE ORIGINAL UNCENSORED VERSION OF THIS BOOK.
So y'all have it on VERY good authority that what y'all are seeing here is meant to be gay asf.
ALSO SPOCK KNEW SUBCONSCIOUSLY THAT THE MAN IN HIS DREAMS WAS HIS T'HY'LA- AND THEN HE SEES KIRK AND HE'S LIKE "YOU ARE THE T'LEMA! THE MAN WHO WALKS IN DREAMS!"
I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK SM

the devil in the dark is a great episode for sooooo many reasons but something i particularly love is its characterization of kirk & spock, especially how the story juxtaposes their initial attitudes vs. their actions as well as juxtaposing them against one another. for most of the episode, kirk is very firmly situated in the command role: he’s laser-focused on his goal of eliminating whatever has been killing the miners. he has a plan & he sticks to it. he can’t afford to entertain ideas about capturing the creature for scientific study rather than killing it, because that introduces more risk to his crew. his mission is to protect as many lives as possible, full stop.
however, when he sees the horta in that cave, his first instinct isn’t to shoot. he’s wary of course, brandishing a phaser for his own safety, but he’s also curious & gentle. he studies her with wonder shining in his eyes. his movements mirror her own—he immediately picks up on the fact that she isn’t necessarily hostile towards him, & in response, he slowly, carefully, sets aside his own hostility as well. he speaks to her, makes little jokes. he watches her in perpetual amazement & intrigue, very cautiously extending a metaphorical hand to say, i don’t want to hurt you. it’s a big leap from “your orders are shoot to kill,” & that reveals a lot about kirk. he’s a good commander, he knows how to handle a dangerous situation while minimizing risk to his crew, but he’s also curious. kind. optimistic. gentle. in the heat of the moment, when he’s the only one at risk, his basic instinct doesn’t say fight, it says listen.
meanwhile, spock is immensely intrigued by the horta; he regrets that it will most likely be necessary to kill her in order to protect themselves. he spends most of the episode speculating on the fascinating science of a silicone-based life form. he even (very subtly) challenges kirk’s order by telling the security team to capture the creature if possible. he isn’t eager to use force, because he simply isn’t that kind of person—he’s curious by nature, like kirk. so it seems a great shift when, upon hearing that the horta is near kirk, he shouts through the communicator, “kill it, captain! kill it!”
realizing that kirk is in danger is like flipping a switch. the way he carries himself changes in an instant. urgency flares to life in his eyes & voice. as wild with it as a vulcan can get. freezing in place, then breaking into a run, calling out, forgetting rank. to him, the most preferable—the most logical—course of action is not to explore why the horta has not attacked the captain yet; rather, it is to eliminate the threat to kirk as soon as possible.
in a way, they represent both a reversal & a mirror of each other in this episode. kirk is a decisive & capable fighter, but his instincts steer him towards gentler things. spock prioritizes scientific inquiry & discovery, but it all appears inconsequential when his friend’s life is on the line. they balance each other, complement each other. it’s why they’re such a good command team. it’s why they fall so easily into such a deep bond. both of them, ultimately, act from a place of love.

sexy himbo jock interpretations of James Tiberius Kirk are silly and do a disservice to the character for a lot of reasons, not least of which is that it fundamentally ignores all the times in canon when Kirk is faced with a scientific discovery or oddity and you can see the effort it takes for him not to clap and skip with excitement. like in ‘the devil in the dark’ when Spock posits that they might be dealing with a silicon based life form and McCoy’s like “but that’s impossible!” and Kirk literally crosses the room to flirt talk excitedly with Spock about the prospect and how it could work! and what it would mean!
What I’m saying is, Kirk’s gotta be smart and a huge dork because how else could he pull a bad autistic bitch like Spock?

Where no man has gone before is a good episode. A far better hook than the man trap or Charlie X. However the final fight bothered me for some reason. Took me a second to realize it was cuz you can see Kirk has chest hair.

idk man I just think of all the franchises you could try to make the Next Big Thing by creating a bunch of new shows and movies, maybe don't pick the one with the notoriously nitpicky obsessed with canon fandom ?? if you don't plan on applying any sort of consistency to the world, characters, alien cultures, entire ethical and moral framework of the universe, etc etc ????
#I'm reluctant to tag this as star trek and get a bunch of angry folks coming at me#though also lbr SW isn't looking too crash hot these days either for the same reasons#but yes this is about that snw trailer#and the section 31 trailer#and all of the new Kurtzman Trek era lbr#like if you like the new stuff then you do you bestie#I've been enjoying Prodigy myself!!!#but I've bounced off every other show pretty hard after each first season#because the simultaneous disregard of FUNDAMENTAL aspects of the universe / established characters and lore#while also religiously adhering to SOME of the established canon (mostly the newly established stuff)#has been driving me up the wall#hell even Prodigy has been hard now they've set it up to lead into Picard#like no thanks I don't accept any version of events where Bev never tells Jean Luc about their son and goes to raise him alone#like they make all the stupidest shit canon and adhere to it#while also making say being a Vulcan a matter of DNA rather than cultural upbringing#nevermind literally half a dozen other shows which show that's NOT how that works#I am genuinely curious how many folks like me have bounced off the new stuff never to return lol#(though okay I do keep up with trailers and sometimes reviews to see if it sounds worth coming back for which it never does)#or only watched bits and pieces#and are meanwhile enjoying their eighth or ninth or twenty second rewatch of TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT#like do they really have the numbers showing up to even watch this new stuff???#lower decks was the most popular it seemed and that's ending#but I can't help but think that if they'd stuck to the quality storytelling and a more or less coherent established universe#that were ... you know ... the defining aspects of the franchise ....#that they might have actually succeeded at finding a new audience looking for prestige science fiction television

I LOVE how star trek tos is failing at heterosexuality.
I mean I look at this show and almost every het relationship is so weird, it just doesn't work there is no writing beside people's 'gender'.
But, these manly men's friendships look so very queer.
Like in mirror mirror, Marlena is obviously hot but since she's 'just' hot, her lack of characterisation makes her easy to forget (and this colorful dress when she is at the door, so camp).
On the other hand Bones softly puts his thumb on Kirk chin to erase a blood stain. And both Jims' first sentence or so are about Spock's beard. Tiz peak.
It's wonderful.
And don't get me wrong: I'm a sucker for well written friendships. I want these hands on the shoulder and waist (if people are ok with contact) and strong dialogue about their platonic feelings. And I'm sad about the possibility of being gay pushing away this kind of writing in today's shows (to be clear it's shitty queerphobia). But oh the sheer joy to see this spark of affection between same gender characters, I'll take these crumbs and cherish them in my little agender bi heart.

In Wrath of Khan, Spock gifts Kirk "A Tale of Two Cities" in an actual physical copy of the book [very vintage for the 23rd century].
THAT GOT ME THINKING-
How many times did Spock gift Kirk a physical book? Did he restlessly scour for hours trying to find an old copy of a book that he knew Kirk would adore?
I can only imagine Spock, a logical and very composed Vulcan, going slightly insane trying to find bound books just so he can see his captain light up with a smile as Spock gifts it to him.
Which- might I add- is an adorable picture to paint in one's head.

Spocktober + Trektober Day 4 - Other Trek Crossover
I haven't watched SNW yet, but I heard Boimler has a massive crush on Spock and I love the Lower Decks art style, so!
(ID under cut)
[Image ID: A black and white drawing of Spock and Boimler from Star Trek, drawn in the style of Lower Decks.
Boimler is gazing at Spock with a lovestruck expression, hearts in his eyes and around his head. One of his legs is popped and he's clasping his hands next to his face. Spock is looking down at a PADD, ignoring him.
Above the drawing is written "Trektober" and "Day 4 - Other Trek Crossover." Below it is written "@aerialworms" and "Spocktober"./End ID]
