I think I'm going to starting sharing one thing about my DR every day. So, let's start with my pet. His name is Archibald and he's an African Land Snail. My father is allergic to pet dander and doesn't like mess, so I can't have a dog or cat. Pansy won Archie for me at the fair when we were children. He likes blueberries and cucumber best and he's just an ordinary snail, not a magic one, but I love him.

Last winner was Caramel Nougat

A sort of lightly smoky black tea, with a dark, caramel sweetness and nuttiness. Very astringent. Like the other teas so far in sampler it's perfectly balanced, nothing too strong or too weak among the flavors. It's similar to other teas I've tried in the past, though I cannot recall which among these polls to reference. I'll say that among teas that taste "like this," this one is easily the best.

Me and the discord chat discovering symptoms of autism in Grant

We are not psychologists but we are autistic and relate to these shared traits. Many of these traits fall under DSM 5 categories for an autism diagnosis as well as trends experienced by autistic people. This is by no means an official diagnosis ofc!

Childhood Stories This is a good place to start. I'll rattle off a few stories. - Hyposensitivity to noise (DSM B4): Jesse Grant dared a friend to shoot a gun next to Ulysses who was absolutely unfazed. Ulysses' reaction can be called hyposensitivity as the sound didn't bother him as it did other children. It can even be argued that this hyposensitivity aided him in his future military career. - Taking instructions too literally (DSM A1): Ulysses' horror story about purchasing the colt "[My father says I am to offer you $20, then $22.50, and finally $25]" shows that he took Jesse's instructions very literally. Not fully understanding this social interaction can be interpreted as childhood naivety or an autistic trait. Keep in mind that Ulysses struggled with monetary deals throughout his entire life. - Outcast in childhood (DSM A3): Ulysses was bullied by others as a child and got the nickname "Useless Grant." Many autistic people have experienced bullying as a child because they are viewed as "different" and an "outsider." Other Traits - Special Interest (DSM B3): It is well known that Ulysses loved horses! Ulysses was basically a horse whisperer and was THE horse guy. His absolute obsession with them throughout his life is akin to special interests. - Sensory triggers (DSM B4): Ulysses was put off by meat that was less cooked and preferred it well-cooked. Having less coked meat was obviously a trigger that made him feel uncomfortable. Many autistic people have similar experiences and find it hard to eat particular foods. He also had his routine cucumber breakfast during the civil war. - Masking in front of strangers (DSM A1): Ulysses seemed quiet in front of strangers but was enthusiastic with his inner circle, as noted by Julia and other friends. In her memoirs, Julia recalled how different was with her versus with strangers. This is something introverts experience, but Julia's description is reminiscent of masking autism. - Empath (common trait not listed in DSM): Ulysses is famously an empath and known for his kindness! Being an empath is a common trait that autistic people experience. Notable instances of Ulysses's empathy was his fair treatment of civilians and soldiers during the Civil War and respectfulness during Confederate surrenders. - Strong sense of justice (common trait not listed in DSM): Ulysses always had a strong sense of justice, something many autistic people experience. Ulysses's sense of justice is particularly evident in his implementation of the 14th and 15th amendments to secure equal rights for African Americans. - Difficulty keeping a job (DSM B2): After his resignation from the army in the 1850s, Ulysses struggled to keep a job. Modern statistics show that people with autism have trouble with work. - Mate crimes (DSM A3): Ulysses seemed to willingly turn a blind eye to friends who took advantage of his positions, especially with money. Ulysses' reputation has been noticeably hurt by this, with notable examples being the Whisky Ring during his presidency and the failure of Grant & Ward due to Ward stealing all profits. Autistic people are more vulnerable to mate crimes due to their desire to make social connections. Taking Ulysses' empathetic nature into consideration, this is quite convincing to me! - Naïvety (DSM A3): Ulysses was very optimistic and trusting to a point of fault. His optimism led to him being taking advantage of in mate crimes. This is something many autistic people experience.

Have to add that there are also accounts of him having a unique stride as well as whittling a lot (stim w). Grant also was noted for never dressing fancy and usually wearing plain clothes that are kinda shabby, so it could be interpreted as a comfort thing.

Of course, we will probably never know for sure if Ulysses was autistic or not, but it sure is interesting to look at the data. I tried my best to connect these traits to the DSM 5. Remember I am not a psychologist but from my personal experience these traits made sense. Thanks for reading!

Got all the fall seeds planted in various containers this week. It's about a month behind normal, but it's been so hot that I was afraid everything would be programmed to bolt immediately. It's going to be 90F today and tomorrow, then a short cold spell (but not frost), then we'll have appropriate weather for germinating everything.

I'm trying something different with the Tidy Cats litter tubs. I usually fill some up 3/4 full of water and shove them in black plastic contactor bags to serve as thermal mass in my cold frame. This year I'm going to also plant in them too (with holes drilled in the bottom) instead of using the earthboxes. I think it will make for a more compact structure, but we'll see if it works. The wire shelving is there because the wildlife has gone nuts with digging everything up in their own preparations for winter. It's very annoying.

But look to the right in that pic. That's my very vigorously growing cucumber and sweet potato bed that I put together during July. And look:

Just got 5 pints of gsrlic dill pickles from the Suyo Long cucumbers and I have those two Beit Alpha cakes to make some tzatziki with later today. There are quite a number of additional fruit setting too. With all the aged wood chips both incorporated into the soil and used as mulch, the bed may keep warm enough to allow me to harvest them even. You know, unless it freezes.

I also went and collected on a few permissions obtained earlier in the season and came home with three clumps of sprouting unharvested garlic and three cuttings from an enormous garden sage bush. The separated cloves ended up being three 6' rows of garlic in a raised bed that I was going to just grow vining flowers and African marigolds in next season. I stripped the leaves off the sage for the dehydrator and will try to root the stems to keep indoors over the winter and plant out in the spring.

Not pictured are the buckets of French marigold and cosmos seeds I also collected. Got several new things to try growing as well as more pepper seeds than any one person could possibly need. May package some of them up to drop off at the food pantry in the spring. Gonna bomb my alley with the cosmos seeds come spring too. The bees freaking LOVED those flowers this year and I aim to please those fuzzy butts as well as beautify.

So the garden is pretty well in hand. Now for the semi-annual garden shed clean out and tidying to get done this week. (And then the garage, ugh)
