“I am wearing my Button Dress from my graduation collection. The dress has more than 13k buttons, all thrifted and placed one by one in a mosaic by me. The crochet hat is also made by me. The silhouette reminds me of hats in colder countries, and I loved experimenting with the texture of crocheted rope, which makes it breathable for a warmer weather. The lace top is from Sandro and shoes Melissa x Y Project. A texture overload is essential for me in my outfits, as I am a maximalist. Whenever I come to New York, I try to wear Brazilian brands as much as I can, because our fashion is unique and deserves to be seen.”

“I’m wearing vintage Puma shoes, most of my jewelry I thrifted in Chinatown, the fur I’m wearing around my neck is a rabbit knit skirt also found in Chinatown, skirt and top thrifted in lower Manhattan, and my metal belt I also found in Chinatown. My everyday style is always monochromatic grey. I dress to personify pigeons (hence the red eye makeup to represent the orange eye pigeons). This outfit was inspired by a pigeon while it is molting – the fur represents the shedding feathers. I go by pigeon (pigeon girl) and I associate myself with pigeons for many reasons – one of which is they are often underestimated and have grit. Pigeons are kind and I often prefer to be apart of there community when I get tired of human interaction.”

20-year-old Japanese Beauty School Student Rikito in Harajuku

Rikito is one of the new Harajuku kids who burst onto the scene this year with his original mix of traditional Japanese items (he regularly wears kimono and geta), vintage fashion, and shironuri makeup. Here he's wearing all resale fashion with Japanese room shoes and Hello Kitty with a face. Rikito's favorite fashion designer is Japanese legend Yohji Yamamoto, but we never see him wearing brand clothing. He prefers to mix stuff from kimono shops, resale stores, and his mom's closet. His fashion inspiration also includes manga & French mime. We shot this street snap in Harajuku, Tokyo, on his 20th birthday.
