They say:

-You can't be AuDHDer because you are "normal".

-We're all a little autistic/ADHD.

-You can't be AuDHDer because you are queer and trans and you had s3x with your partner.

And stuff like that.

But when I don't mask, when I show autistic and ADHD joy, when I stim, when they see my special interests, they say I'm "weird", "childish" or "stupid".

When I show my difficulties, when I need support, when I have repetitive and racing thoughts, they say I'm "picky", "selfish", "spoiled".

When I have a meltdown or a shutdown, they say I'm "mad".

When they know that I am neurodivergent, they say I'm "ill".

I'm not ill, mad, spoiled, selfish, picky, stupid, childish or weird.

AuDHD is a disability, difficulty, joy, special interests, hyperfocus, mood swings, hypersensitivity, etc...

AuDHD is not an illness.

I am transgender

I do not identify as my birth sex

I am nonbinary

My gender does not fall within the binary

I am agender

Never have I experienced this thing called gender

Hate me until your face turns red

Throw derogatory slurs in my face

I will not shatter like a porcelain doll

I will not be silenced

I have gender dysphoria

Crippling and life-shattering

I received gender affirming care

A beacon of hope amid the darkness

I got top surgery

A procedure that saved my life

Say that I butchered my body

Say that I am mentally deranged and deluded

I refute that, for I am beautiful, radiant

I will not be silenced

I am queer

Not apart of heteronormative society

I am aro

I do not experience romantic attraction

I am ace

I do not experience sexual attraction

You spit venom and vitriol in my face

Yesterday I got officially diagnosed with ADHD!

I got a psychological evaluation on January 2nd, and finally had my feedback meeting yesterday.

Obviously, like most neurological disorders, it’s a spectrum, and I have a more mild version of the combined (inattentive + hyperactive) type.

It was just so nice to finally get the validation that I really do have it. Now we start the very long process of trying to get accommodations and maybe medication. We’ll see.

Part of the evaluation was also an IQ test, and it turns out I have an IQ of 122, so that’s kinda cool.

Dear fellow adhders:

It is okay to sleep among the pile of clothes you left on your bed because your brain was done with putting away laundry after you put away everything leading up to that.

The dirty dishes surrounding and resting in the sink are well to be there. You needn't wash any of them until you need a specific dish, at which only wash what you need to use immediately. Or, simply eat off a paper towel or wax paper or drink straight from the container in the fridge. If dishes are developing mold, let them be; they can be cleaned when you are mentally ready to clean them.

If there is an unpleasant smell and you can't clean to attend to it, use a good-smelly to ease your mind, and clean when you are ready (good-smellies i.e. lighting candles or incense to make the room smell nice, spraying fragrances on your clothing or comfort plushies so you are not traipsing or cuddling perturbed).

Caffeine is your friend, and utilize sugar for dopamine.

If autism is comorbid, engage in your special interests liberally to be infused with the joy and energy that dopamine you get from it brings regularly. Playlists of special interest songs/songs pertaining to/reminding you of your special interests are a passive boon that boosts spirits and energy. Place illustrations/pictures/etc. reminders of your special interests around your home so when your distractible mind ganders, you get a boost of dopamine.

Above all other things in life, focus on dopamine maintenance. Our brains have a natural deficiency in dopamine generation compared to neurotypical brains, so we must meet their baseline first before doing the things they do without issue. Truly, dopamine is the key. Getting that need met allows all the rest to fall into place -- not in a neurotypical way, but in an adhd (/audhd) way. Our lives won't be the same as neurotypical lives. Why should we compare our lives to theirs? Why should we feel externally-imposed shame for how we lead our lives? We shouldn't. We should never.

Point of this post is, shame has no place in adhd lives. We can carry out our existences in peace in our messy surroundings. Dishes remaining by the sink, with some washed and others not. Unswept floors, cat hair accumulating in corners. Laundry increasing in height in the basket. Stepping over a paper that is to be thrown away only when we are ready. A zen life in an abode neurotypicals would judge negatively and make demands of.

Our homes are not to be demanded of, realms of peace they are.

Sincerely, an audhd man who is making it on his own and leading a relatively peaceful and stable life, thanks to honoring his brain's natural ways and orchestrating his life within that innate framework rather than one alien constructed and placed before him. Shedding the judgments cast down by others in his past. It's a work in progress, unlearning the forced shame that causes us to feel distressed and useless (when we are not!) but I am close.

Don't try to lead a neurotypical life. Lead a YOU life.

We must all relearn peace for ourselves.

Attain peace, and freedom from neurotypical judgment, and pursue the dopamine like your life depends on it.

Because our lives do 💚✨

Found this SVG ADHD flag while poking around Wikmedia Commons - hadn't seen it before so thought I'd share.

The colour meanings are listed as: Orange: behavioural White: cognitive Purple: mood

The design evokes that of the Mental Health flag, though I do not know if this is intentional.

I am spending my lull period (of my circadian rhythm) on this happy beach day crafting, just as I have done yesterday at home. When the adhd mind slows to yearn for resting in these hours, it gets interested in the things it has found noteworthy and collected.

And in my grinding down of this piece of wood I found with a porous sea shell to make a more comfortable handle for a tool of some sort, I achieved an epiphany.

Belphegor is the Demon of Sloth and Patron of Inventors for this reason.

I pondered, in ancient times I would have been a god in the community, an inventor of various things that aided human life, because of what I was doing at present: making something out of all the things I collected while I found a spot on the beach. And then it hit me, the Belphegor revelation.

Adhders of ancient humanity created so many innovations for their communities through means of their minds' instinctive urges to pick up objects they find, and then create something useful in the lull periods when the mind calls for rest in the afternoon. We are not broken. We are smart and amazing inventors. Hail Belphegor, God of Rest and Invention!!
