I just recently started following you so i don't have the full lore of your murderous gay religiously traumatized doggos, BUT, from my understanding, they are Italian and i don't know what part of Italy they are from, yet i can't help headcanoning Vasco as Tuscan, while Machete is probably from some part of Veneto. And as an Italian who has heard Tuscans and Veneto dialet, well it's an hilarious mental image.
Vasco is indeed Tuscan, Florentine to be specific. He comes from a wealthy and influential noble family that has lived in Florence for centuries. He's proud of his roots, and it's usually easy for strangers to tell where he's from. He's a resonably successful politician and has worked as an ambassador and representative of Florence on numerous occasions.
Machete is originally Sicilian (ironically about as far from Veneto as possible), although he was taken to mainland at young age and has lived in several places since then, before ending up in Rome. The way I see it, he exhibits very little local color, his demeanor and (even though Italian hadn't become a standardized language yet) way of speaking are formal, neutral and scarcely give away any hints about his personal history, at least in the 16th century canon.
#I tend to take the easy way out with the various Italian dialects/languages and temper their effect on how the dog world works#even though to my understanding in reality they differ drastically from each other even today and they aren't always mutually intelligible#especially when you compare northern and southern ones#I know at least Sicilian is so different from modern day Italian it's considered a separate language entirely#it isn't the only one but I'm not a linguist and not even Italian so I'm not really qualified to be explaining any of this to you#main point is that my dogs are well traveled educated and adaptable so I'd like to believe that they manage#otherwise making this whole scenario work would become very complicated#language barriers aplenty#Machete is a fast learner with a natural knack for languages so he absorbs/decodes new ones easily#and I can see him acting as an interpreter if necessary#which is a valuable trait for someone working as the secretary of state I'd imagine#a lot of people he ends up dealing with speak at least passable Latin so at a pinch they might perhaps try switching to that?#Vasco might have a Tuscan flavor but Machete is more of a blank slate (at least in public and at work)#answered#fallenoftheromaempire#feel free to correct me if I've gotten something wrong I'm not an expert and this stuff is complicated for an outsider

i have to go to bed very soon so instead i'm lying here being overcome by clintasha emotions
#i've spent today rereading bucky barnes gets his groove back and the clintasha chapter never fucking fails to send me into a tailspin#the shared history. their shared history. god#i love CNL and CNL is one of my top ships of all time#but man if clintasha by itself without anyone else and especially without any kids doesn't mean something so much to me#i will never be a normal person and neither will you and by fucking god we will warp each other beyond recognition to be abnormal together#we'll spend so long speaking in code that it becomes the only way we speak#i don't know what other people mean by trust but for me it's what you do#sb and l rambles#sb and l reads fic#mcu#mcu ideas#clintasha#there's a fic out there about nat time-travelling back after endgame and fixing everything#she saves all the other girls in the red room. she gets bucky out. she stops loki and thanos and saves the world#and it is good. and everyone is happy. and she gets a romance with maria hill#what does she give up for all of this good? there is so much good. and all she loses in this new timeline is her relationship w clint#i don't even think the author ships clintasha. but man if that doesn't sum them up#natasha can fix everything and can save herself and have sisters and be the hero she's never let herself dream about being#and all it costs is the absolute bone-deep fucked up secret language that is her relationship with clint barton#all it costs is her ability to be that close to another person. to only have one couch she allows herself to pass out on#''telling clint doesn't count. that's like talking to my right elbow'' indeed

Just found out about Cadence of Hyrule, kinda in love with this game and I could totally envision a hero from it (probably won't be added to this au but fun to think about)
Cade? Rhythm? Sere? would be very rhythmic in battle and never wastes a move or step, nor a swing of their breakable items. They'd always walk/march on beat, even when they're sitting down they have a habit of tapping their fingers or foot to their own internal rhythm. They like to hum and repeat pretty sounds they hear, everything sounds like music to them (the buzz of cicadas, the whistle in the wind, etc). Even their voice would have a slight sing-songy accent around the other Links, accidentally singing a word or syllable while speaking.
Their world itself thrives on a music-based culture. Everyone has a song in their heart and family members have similar songs while close friends and partners have songs that harmonize and compliment each others well. Clans or villages could perform similar music genres or styles. People would sing to express respect, love, or joy in their words, the stronger someone sings their words or speech the stronger they feel these emotions. On the other hand, yelling, arguing, and screeching holds greater weight in conversations due to being strong, loud negative noises (heavy metal is frowned upon unfortunately).
It's common for rituals and ceremonies to be performed through song: wedding vows, birthday celebrations, festivals, even funeral dirges, etc. Even one of a child's milestones are their first tune or instrument (along their first word and step). When Princess Zelda (Lyre? Ballad? Harmony? Melody?) was coronated, one of the requirements was for her to write and perform a song to her people to portray her good and honest intentions to serve the kingdom.
Someone's vocal register (soprano, alto, tenor, bass, etc) is commonly shared with others and treated in a similar way as astrological signs (gemini, cancer, leo, etc).
If one chooses not to sing, they typically dedicated themselves to an instrument or two instead. Multi-instrumentalists are often admired and seen as gifted.
Music and rhythm is all around them in nature. Everyone is typically expected to learn to sing or play an instrument of some kind (it's an unspoken thing). To these citizens, song is seen as something that makes them hylian. It's said that their pointed ears let them hear song better and be closer to the music of the heavens. It separates them from monsters and animals that follow a beat but can't produce decent song of their own, mostly due to a lack of the proper vocal chords. Many birds are highly valued and respected in their culture due to their ability to produce melodious bird calls, even common as pets. Because of this, many in Cade's world often depict religious figures like the golden goddesses with great bird-like angel wings and bright plumage in their respective colors (Farore=green, Din=red, Nayru=blue). Maybe even feathers are common in royal or high fashion, I could definitely see Lyre wearing cute feathers in her hair or accessories.
Sunny or clear weather sounds like calm and relaxing music while heavy rain or stormy weather sounds discordant and loud with the claps of thunder.
#itโs fun to think about#Iโve only just started the game but itโs super fun!#I could imagine the links traveling to Cadeโs hyrule#and feel like they stepped into a musical or something#also the bosses are peak#like gleeokenspiel??? genius#Iโd have to do some digging into where this game would fit timeline wise#but my working idea is that some sort of virus or something spread into hyrule#causing the monsters to mutate into music based creatures like armos into bass guitarmos#and the hylians had to adapt to this new world for decades#creating the world and culture they know today#but Iโve only played a little bit of the game so weโll see how it goes#loz#legend of zelda#loz au#cadence of hyrule#zelda music

I just remembered how my friendโs dad told me with a serious face that my tribe is full of cannibals and that there were savages hiding in the woods we lived near. Like wtf. I didnโt know how to respond
Build a time machine, kill Christopher Columbus
#We read some of his stuff in my Monster Studies class#Because of the whole Unknown Cultures are Monstrous theme throughout history#And he's the one who spread the rumour that Caribbean native people are cannibals to justify enslaving them#And it spread to All American Indigenous People are Cannibals myths#And tbf cannibalism does exist in some cultures around the world like on Papua New Guinea#But it's ritual cannibalism#There's this hugely controversial and misunderstood film I like called Cannibal Holocaust#And it's about an anthropologist travelling to the amazon to find a missing documentary film crew#And he finds out they have been cannibalised but then he recovers their film material#And it turns out they tortured and killed the locals to portray them as bloodthirsty savages so they definitely had it coming and were#Actually killed in self defense#And yeah the film is not perfect but it really nails the colonial era myth making still influencing people today#Asks

โIf a lot of men get killed at one go, does it make the killing of one man less of a crime? I donโt know, Andy, I donโt know. Iโm only twenty and they say today the world is ours, but Pa was twenty once and felt the world was his, and long, long ago Mad was twenty too, laughing at applauding audiences, smiling from picture postcards, and when I am as old as she is nothing will have changedโฆโ
Daphne du Maurier, Rule Britannia (1972)
#think about the context of this woman writing this right#she was born in 1907#so by the time she was 20 she had lived through one world war with the next right on the horizon#as well as at this point witnessing the effects of so many other 20th century conflicts#sheโs 65 at this point and this is what she sees ahead for future generations#which Iโve no doubt others saw coming as well but just like everyone for USUK in the book is acting#Iโm sure plenty read this and thought but that could never happen not now not here not to us#but look where we are today#look at the genocide being enacted in Palestine#I want people to read this book in 2024 and think hard about it#because the events of the book are happening to white people in England right#Iโm not at all trying to say she described anything on the level of the real world atrocities currently happening#but the slowly building anxiety of โbut what could really happen they wonโt do thatโ#then overnight all these new restrictions and retaliation#phones cut power cut water cut travel ban#just because itโs happening to people far away from your life#doesnโt mean it could never happen#you wouldnโt see it coming or think it was all that bad until suddenly it was too late#obviously I am reaching to apply this book to today but I think it could make certain people reexamine their mindset#daphne du maurier#rule britannia#quote#this book is making me think so much about imperialism and occupation and military states and civilian cruelty#through such an interesting lens considering what I know of Daphne du mauriers life up to the point she wrote this#this was her last novel#and itโs so different from her other novels#like this to me is her equivalent of a Connecticut Yankee in king Arthurโs court#except itโs just the ending where everything becomes terrible so fast

Vexillology: A Lifelong Love Affair with Flags
Vexillology is the study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general.
Flags are more than just pieces of cloth waving in the breeze; they are symbols of identity, history, and culture. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by them. This passion for flag vexillology began in my childhood, sparked by two experiences: watching the Eurovision Song Contest and spending holidays with my grandparents.
One of my earliest memories of flags is from those summer holidays when I would travel with my grandparents. We often found ourselves at airports, waiting for flights, surrounded by travellers from all over the world.ย
To pass the time, my Grandfather and I would play a game: who could name the most flags? He was a great teacher, and I quickly became captivated by the variety of colours, symbols, and designs that made each flag unique. It wasn't just about naming them; it was about discovering the stories behind them. I was enchanted by the idea that a simple flag could carry so much meaning, representing entire nations and their histories.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to know. I remember scanning the departure boards at airports, not just to see where the planes were going but to match the destinations with their flags. Every trip became an opportunity to add to my growing knowledge of flags, and that game with my grandfather turned into a lifelong passion.
Another source of my love for vexillology came from watching the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision isnโt just a spectacle of music; itโs a festival of flags. Each performance, each vote, is accompanied by the flag of the competing nation, and for me, it was like a second game of identifying flags on screen. Countries I had never even heard of were suddenly part of my consciousness, their flags as recognisable to me as any pop song. This annual event became more than just a music competition it was a parade of national pride, where each flag represented a people, a culture, and a story.
I became curious about why each country chose the colours, symbols, and designs they did. Why did some flags have stars while others had stripes? What was the meaning behind the use of red, white, and blue on so many national flags? The answers often led to fascinating discoveries about history, geography, and politics.ย
As I grew older, my love of flags deepened, and I began to appreciate the subtle language they spoke. A flag is more than just a pretty design; it is a statement. The tricolour of France, for example, represents liberty, equality, and fraternity, values born out of the Frenchย
Revolution. The Union Jack of the United Kingdom symbolises the union of England, Scotland, and Ireland through its combination of crosses. Meanwhile, the bold colours of African nations, such as Ghanaโs red, yellow, and green, often pay homage to Pan-African unity and freedom from colonial rule.
Thereโs also the complex and elegant symmetry of flags like Japanโs, with its minimalist red circle on a white field, representing the sun. Or the intricacy of Nepalโs flag, the only non-rectangular national flag, which consists of two stacked triangles representing the Himalayas and the hope that the country will live as long as the sun and the moon.
Flags are a shorthand for history, telling stories that would take books to explain in just a few symbols and colours. They evoke emotion, pride, and sometimes even controversy, depending on the story they tell and how people interpret them.
What I love most about vexillology is that it bridges the personal and the global. On the one hand, it brings back warm memories of those days spent with my grandfather, playing our flag-naming game at airports, and of Eurovision nights with their kaleidoscope of flags flashing across the screen. On the other hand, it connects me to a wider world, one in which every flag I encounter is a new story waiting to be uncovered.
Vexillology has taught me that flags are not just static images they are living, evolving symbols that reflect the people they represent. From new nations forming their identities to older ones reaffirming theirs, flags continue to play an essential role in how we see ourselves and each other.
My love of vexillology has become a way for me to explore the world, both past and present, from the comfort of a flag chart or a televised contest. What started as a fun game at airports has turned into a lifelong fascination with the symbols and stories that flags carry.
Whether Iโm watching Eurovision or travelling abroad, flags remind me that thereโs always more to learn and discover and that sometimes, a simple design can speak volumes about who we are.

Support My Family Journey to Safety and Peace
๐จUrgent Appeal ๐จ
My name is Jaber Al-Haj. I am from Gaza, married to my wife, Menna, and we have a little son named Hashim, who is less than two years old. Like any Palestinian family, we dreamed of a simple and stable life. But the recent war turned our lives upside down. The sounds of explosions never left us, and fear has become part of our daily existence. My son Hashim suffers from health problems that urgently require treatment, but the war has destroyed everything, including the healthcare system, making access to necessary medical care nearly impossible. With each passing day, our suffering deepens, and the fear for Hashimโs health and future consumes me.
Alongside my small family, I used to work with my brothers, Aboud and Bilal, on our joint projectโa small lab for producing essential household cleaning products. We started this project with modest resources, dreaming that it would become a source of income to support us and provide job opportunities for our community. But the war left us with nothing. Our lab, which was once filled with life and hard work, was reduced to rubble under the bombardment. We lost our equipment, our livelihood, and with it, a part of our dreams for the future.
Even our home, our only refuge, did not escape the destruction. It was severely damaged and is now uninhabitable. We were forced to flee and live in a tent under harsh conditions unfit for human life. The cold, the heat, the lack of resources, and the absence of privacy have made life nearly unbearable. We try to cope, but every day brings new challenges and suffering.
Today, what worries me the most is my son Hashim's condition. His health is deteriorating, and he desperately needs treatment abroad. However, under the circumstances weโre living in, I lack the means to secure his travel and medical expenses. As a father, there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching my child suffer while being unable to help him.
This campaign is a lifeline for my family in our darkest hour. With your generosity, we can bring hope back into our lives and secure a better future for my son, Hashim. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a world of difference.

Thank you for standing with us and helping us through this difficult time. Your kindness means more than words can express.
With heartfelt gratitude, Jaber AlHaj
