Depression has no vanishing point. Instead it spreads out, until the horizon itself is defined by fog. You touch yourself but not even an ache, or a pulse arises. You not only feel nothing; you’ve become nothing. Sensationless, mouthless. Your ear buzzing with flies.
— Anita Olivia Koester, from “Venus is Mummified,” published in Connotation Press

My only piece of advice to girls and young women is that you have to become financially independent no matter what it takes. Do whatever you need to do to become financially independent in this world and don’t ever let it go for anybody.

I'm not saying I dislike the "having to wait for and earn the captaincy" storyline. There's obviously a lot of really interesting stories there and great character beats that have resulted in some of my favorite Trek characters. But there is an extremely noticeable pattern in which show leads need character development to move up the ranks
And who is presented as inherently qualified from the beginning
And before anyone mentions her, yes, I know we have Captain Freeman, but she's not the lead of her show

Thinking about the homeschooling family who frequent my library and who pulled their teen son out of public school because they wouldn't accommodate his learning disabilities. For context I am in the American South, that mythical land where the education system is so bad that it's not anyone's personal fault that they never learn anything, because they're so helpless and stupid.
Anyway, they were doing basic math and reading and writing at home and had their standard curricula for that, but their project for a year and the reason I saw them every week for a year is that he was learning about 1 country each week. They would get three books, one about the country's history, one about her food, one about language (if possible) or travel (if not). They would read select chapters from all three (he rarely cover-to-covered them, especially if I didn't have books meant for young readers about a particular country, as our collection for such matters is often 'not great buddy') and make up a worksheet of basic facts and history at the end of the week, when the family would also cook something form the cookbook together to eat for dinner.
South of the USA. Public library with books that were not ideal. He didn't even read the whole book if it was too big. They didn't even go looking for the books themselves, they went to a local building with free services, asked a worker there to find them the books, and went home.
You can learn about the world around you! It can be fun and delicious! Your local librarian will not say a word if you want easy books and no one will ever know if you don't read the whole thing! If you have been waiting for a parent or teacher or pastor to tell you what to learn, REBEL! GO LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND YOU ON YOUR OWN!

I do want to touch on one more thing. When black people were stolen from Africa and put on those ships. They stripped us of our culture, our language and our history. A lot of us in present day can’t even say where our ancestors came from exactly, we can’t speak the language, we don’t even know the names of our forefathers.
That music scene was so moving because it highlights that despite all of the terrible atrocities, we are connected. Past, present and future. It’s in our soul, it’s in our very bones. We will always carry each other. It’s spiritual and it’s unbreakable. That power is our birthright.

I've been rereading TLT and as much as I love the insane lesbian angle, I can't stop thinking about how Harrow as a child fell instantly in love with Earth.
She grows up in the darkest, saddest, deadest corner of the solar system, deprived to the point she's unable to tolerate bright light or really even much flavor in food. And she sees the face of Earth, and without understanding what she sees, loves it. my ecologist heart feels some type of way about this.

“I don’t know how you expect me to win this fight,” Faith says, crossing her arms again. She tries to chuckle, looking around the room. “I mean, we all know I’m not the top Slayer. And this thing already beat her?”
“No, no,” says Anya, shaking her head, too loud. “The thing that killed Buffy is already dead.”
Faith says, “So who am I here to fight?”
“Faith,” Angel says. She turns to look at him -- his throat is working. He rubs one hand over his face. “Faith-- Buffy was killed by a vampire.”
Faith can’t help but visualize her lying on the ground, being fed on. Someone’s teeth at her neck. Struggling and struggling until her body finally stops fighting. She says, “Oh.”
Giles is dead. Willow’s in danger. The kid -- the little sister, supposedly -- under Angel’s protection and far away from the action. Red eyes, clenched fists. We lost her and not she’s dead.
Faith says, “Oh,” again.
“Yeah,” says Angel. “We need you to slay a vampire.”
