“Many years ago,” began a story in a Singapore-based newspaper in 1899, “it used to be customary to transport convicts from India to this Colony.” That article profiled a courthouse scene of fisticuffs between two old men. According to the newspaper, these two ex-convicts opted “to settle their slight differences” with violence, resulting in the “junior” of the pair having “both his arms broken.” [...] Amused by the scene, the writer cast these men as relics from another time.
Convicts from South Asia were once a conspicuous presence in Southeast Asia, their handiwork visible everywhere, particularly in the built environment of Singapore.
In the twenty-first century, public acknowledgment of their achievements barely exists, elided by many in the Indian community who would rather not trace their origins to convict ancestors and erased by postcolonial governments that would rather not see their shining cities and states shaped by coerced labor. As for the roads, bridges, and buildings constructed by “servants” of the East India Company, as Indian convicts understood themselves, many have been leveled to make room for new monuments.
Convicts had a significant role in forging empires across the world. Penal transportation was a key strategy of British imperial rule, notably in the case of Australia, from the eighteenth century onward. However, the British also established penal settlements in Southeast Asia where they sent women and men from South Asia convicted of heinous crimes, including political offenses. [...]
Empire of Convicts: Indian Penal Labor in Colonial Southeast Asia tells the stories of convicts journeying across kala pani (black waters) and making their homes in Bengkulu, Penang, and Singapore, where they served extended sentences.
Despite finding themselves in novel and precarious situations, many prisoners exercised considerable agency and resisted colonial authorities, in some cases even becoming “their own warders.” Such are the tales of Fateh Khan of Banaras who emerged as the sahib and leader of the Indian convicts and soldiers in Bengkulu or Jallia who escaped from Penang and made his way back home to Gujarat or the many women and men who labored in Singapore for decades and never returned to India.
Political prisoners from South Asia lived alongside other convicts in the insular prisons of Southeast Asia. My book’s cover features the belongings of the Sikh rebel, Bhai Maharaj Singh, who fought the British in India and was held captive in Singapore in the early 1850s. These objects -- a conch shell, a finger ring, a knife, two steel quoits, a sewing needle and thread, and a religious text -- attest to persons and things dispersed across an Indian Ocean world. Empire of Convicts serves as a counterpart to well-known stories of law, crime, punishment, and prisons, and to an ongoing story of prisoners, particularly in the United States, being used for their labor and exploited by racist structures in liberal democracies.

The murder of a politician in a bustling area in India's Mumbai city has sent shockwaves across the country.
Baba Ziauddin Siddique, 66, was shot on Saturday night near his carwhile he was leaving his son's office. He died later in hospital.
The killing of Siddique, an influential politician who was part of the coalition governing Maharashtra state - of which Mumbai is the capital - has set off a political blame-game.
The motive for the murder is not clear yet, but for many it has brought back memories of the 1990s, when politicians and film stars were frequently targeted by Mumbai's underworld.
Police have arrested three people so far and say investigations are continuing. Local media reports say the arrested men are part of a notorious gang whose leader is currently in jail.
Who was Baba Siddique?
Born in the eastern state of Bihar, Siddique migrated to Mumbai at the age of five with his father, a watchmaker.
He started his political career in the 1980s as a student leader with the Congress party, soon leading its youth wing in Mumbai. He then entered local council politics before being elected to the state’s legislature three times in a row and becoming a minister in 2004 for about four years.
In February, he left the Congress to join the Nationalist Congress Party which, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena, currently governs state.
Apart from his political activities, Siddique also made headlines for his glitzy iftar parties held during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan which were attended by top Bollywood stars.
It was at his iftar party in 2013 that superstars Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan ended their much-discussed rift with a hug - that propelled "the annual Siddique affair into a must-watch event on the city’s social calendar", Midday newspaper wrote in 2016.
How was Siddique killed?
The politician was shot outside his son’s office as he was about to enter his car in the busy Bandra area.
Police said three shooters fired six-seven rounds, hitting Siddique's abdomen and chest, and fled the scene. A bystander was also injured as a stray bullet hit his leg.
Investigators said they had recovered two pistols and 28 live rounds of ammunition from the arrested men.
Siddique had three police guards - local media reported his security was upgraded days ago - but the suspects reportedly distracted them by setting off a "smoke firecracker".
What is the state of the investigation?
Police have been granted custody of the arrested men for a week. They say they are on the lookout for their accomplices.
“We have set up 15 teams and investigation is on to identify who provided logistical support to the shooters,” senior police official Datta Nalawade said.
While the police have not confirmed it, several reports citing sources have linked the arrested men with the notorious Bishnoi gang. The gang's leader Lawrence Bishnoi is an accused in several cases and is currently in a high-security prison in Gujarat state.
Within hours of the shooting, a man claiming to be a member of the gang posted on Facebook that they were behind Siddique’s killing. Police have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the post.
Though Bishnoi has been in jail since 2015, he frequently makes news. Many social media accounts claiming to belong to him or his associates have often posted his selfies from jail. He even gave interviews to a TV channel in 2022, prompting an investigation.
Many of the reports on Bishnoi are based on police sources and it’s not clear how he conducts the gang's operations while in prison.
The gang's name popped up in connection with the murder of Punjabi rapper Sidhu Moosewala in 2022.
In April, police arrested two gang members for allegedly firing shots outside the apartment of actor Salman Khan in Mumbai.
On Monday, the Canadian police also said it believed the Bishnoi group had connections to Indian government agents who were using the gang to target Sikh separatists on their soil. India has not officially responded to the police claims.
What else has happened?
Siddique’s killing is the first major assassination of a politician in Mumbai since the 1990s when high-profile killings of politicians, businessmen and Bollywood celebrities by criminal gangs of the Mumbai underworld were not uncommon.
Local media reports said he had received a death threat two weeks ago, which led to his security being upgraded.
His killing within days of that has put the state government on the backfoot, with Maharashtra set to hold assembly elections soon.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called the murder “a complete failure of law and order in Maharashtra”, and Delhi's former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said the incident had scared not only the people of Maharashtra “but the entire country”.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde has defended his government.
“[The culprits] will not be spared no matter who they are, be it the Bishnoi gang or any underworld gang… Those who are receiving threats, their safety is the state government’s responsibility and it will fulfil its responsibility,” he said.

Youth and Politics!
A significant number of individuals have come together to demonstrate the strength of community and unity amid the speech conflict between two communities in Gujarat. Where have all these vibrant social groups disappeared to when the region needed them? There are numerous problems when powerful individuals use their position to silence the voice of the common man. Newspaper report many such cases and many not under the influence. A hit and run case driver flees from the spot and police do not register complaint. It’s obvious that that individual won’t be able to fight to the system but where all these unity are not available that time. There’s a report regarding teasing to school girls while going to the schools and no man come forward to help.  If citizen want development, they need to be aware of the issues that affect humanity. Its pity that youth are more interested in power, influence and footage and they find the platform in political parties campaign. I remind my report as a part of the leading newspaper’s taste drive. The students from renowned colleges in my city were unaware about state education minister, home minister and women and child development minister is far thing. They even were unaware about the candidate from their area and they are excited about voting. We talk a lot about youth and politics but how many young people are there who actually notice every data, action and news! Women leadership we talk a lot but I can name only two women Mrs. Maneka Gandhi and Mrs. Nirmala Sitaraman as a great leader. Is there any fair opportunity for the rest of the women who are doing their best in women empowerment! 33% reservation is for the influential women more or less. Youth and politics does not mean youth in politics. It means awareness among youth and aware youth who can think and write about nation facing the issue. I wish 2024 will change the scenario.

HOW NEHRU CAN TRULY BE CALLED 'THE ARCHITECT OF INDIA'S BIMARU ECONOMIC STRUCTURE'. ................................................................................. - HOW NEHRU INCOMPETENTLY, & PER MANY HISTORIANS, MALICIOUSLY, RUINED EASTERN INDIAN ECONOMIES, LIKE BENGAL, BIHAR, JHARKHAND, MADHYA PRADESH, CHHATTISGARH, & ORISSA, BY HIS ONE SIDED (SUBSIDIZED/EQUALIZED FREIGHT COST OF RAW MATERIAL ONLY & NOT FOR FINISHED GOODS) FREIGHT EQUALIZATION POLICY. - HOW NEHRU IN THE GARB OF A SOCIALIST INDIA, MANAGED TO CREATED A REGRESSIVELY CAPITALISTIC INDIA INSTEAD.
Here are India's 60 yr Share of Wealth stats, from 1961-2020, taken from the 'World Inequality Database'.
Looking at which, most would be forced to ask, why is it that in a wholly socialized state like India (& heavily publicized so at that for 60 yrs)....that our Top 1% 's share in wealth goes up 3 times, Top 10%'s share goes up 1.5 times, BUT SHARE OF THE BOTTOM 50% IS LITERALLY HALVED?
The answer to this lies largely in one man, Nehru, & his policies, either incompetently unintentional or maliciously intentional, policies directly responsible for creating a deeply disparate & heavily lopsided yet overall non-flourishing economic structure, for the entire first half century of the 'Dominion (of Britain) India'.
And the biggest mishap-causing misadventure, being 1951's infamous FREIGHT EQUALIZATION POLICY.
👇
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freight_equalisation_policy#:~:text=Freight%20equalisation%20policy%20was%20adopted,subsidised%20by%20the%20central%20government.
Above is the Russian Govt+military reaction, to Indian 'independence' in mid 1947. This article was published in the Russian central military newspaper 'Red Star' on July 31, 1947, just 2 weeks before the official date of India's so-called Independence.
"Chief economic positions still remain in British hands–railways, marine transport, port economy, irrigation systems, finance, basic part of jute, industry, almost whole mining industry etc"
“The defence of economic positions and interests is not possible without political power. That power will be secured in the person of the capitalists, landowners and businessmen who are dependent upon British capital.”
“The partition, does not affect the feudal power of the Princes who have always supported British domination.”
"The British Govt plans to artificially separate industrial from agricultural areas, turning it to a agrarian & raw material appendage of Britain."
Exactly what Nehru's Freight Equalization Policy achieved 4 yrs later!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And to add to what y'all I assume would already have read from above, as to it's evil designs & effects, it created a reverse-reward scenario, whereby all the resource-rich states were essentially penalized for their natural advantages, by taking away all incentive for processing-industries & final transportation industries, that are a logical next step from the extraction industries, to germinate & set base in these places. Thereby creating a scenario where the South-western & western coastal states like Maharashtra, Gujarat & Tamil Nadu, & parts of Punjab in North India, were able to find logical easy base for all the processing & transportation industries in their states, for industries like steel, cement, heavy manufacturing, & power, all enabled via raw materials from the other far-off states, like iron ore, coal, limestone, bauxite, copper etc, even w/o any personal natural resources to rely on themselves, merely by virtue of being easy locations to set up ports in for exports, & w/o industries having to compromise on higher transportation & value-added processing costs, that cost aspect equalized & protected for all distances from the resource point. All this, with resource states not finding even some respite in terms of return benefits from any possibly subsidized finished product costs, finished goods not covered by this policy!
These 4-5 states effectively thus became the parasites, for atleast 7 of the traditionally god-gifted states of today like Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bengal & Uttar Pradesh, killing all their hope at industrial development & economic progress, & where there is economic (or lotsa times attached) spiritual hopelessness, springs leftism in all it's devious forms, giving birth to intense communism & it's shameful offsprings of caste-divide & gang-culture, literally turning these states HOUSING HALF OF INDIA'S POPULATION, into the pot-holes of the Indian Union -the BIMARU (for Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh) states of India.
Now in all of this, it's not as if the above-mentioned coastal states were turning themselves into heavens of prosperity either, merely relatively well-off & with a hopeful disposition of the future, that in itself enough to attract large-scale migration from the above BIMARU states, particularly Maharashtra with a more traditionally Hindi-friendly ambience, but also in TN, creating a new urban housing problem, giving birth anew to Mumbai's infamously gargantuan chawl (dingy hutment) lifestyle.
And the reasons for these states, given all these special privileges, not able to take off well enough, aren't directly visible, yet that we can now, on basis of our analysis of Nehru & his so-called Independent India, over innumerable blogs prior, safely interpret, to be an India yet functioning in 1950s & till mid-1960s as some sort of a vassal state of Britain. Only natural then for a supreme state in such a relationship, to not be assumed to desire nations other than itself any sorta economic or strategic base in it's territory, thus curtailing more robust foreign economic to-and-fro.
A utterly class-subservient bent, not seen just for the British race, but per historians, eg Kanchan Gupta, in his hateful sense of complex & hatred of dark-skinned & skinny Bengali community, even worse passionate Hindu Durga-lovers, & per many, all largely borne of his hatred for Bose.
And thus ends yet another inglorious chapter from the life of the self-confessed Last British Ruler of India.
The Tale of the Internal Destruction of India, & it's Premier at it.

No specific set or rules are describing for Bhajan, it is a free form of singing based on the devotee how they conduct it. According to Hinduism Bhakti, Kirtan and Bhajan all these three are connected with the vedic era specially Samaveda. Semaveda is meant to sing like a musical score which should be heard. The main motive behind conducting this Bhajan Shandya is to receive blessing of God's. Bhajan also helps to maintain possitive environment around one's selves and wish to get all their dreams fulfilled.
