“Unearthing Buried Gods.” Michael McGrath
Michael McGrath Summons Symbolism and a Folk Art Style in Expressive Paintings
November 6, 2024
Art
Kate Mothes
From fanged cats and all-seeing ravens to anthropomorphized botanicals and disembodied faces, Michael McGrath’s uncanny works nod to the symbol-rich, flat compositions of folk art or “naïve” painting. His mixed-media works combine materials like graphite, oil paint and oil stick, ink, and acrylic on a variety of surfaces, including wood, canvas, and burlap.
Inspired by the expansive scenes of contemporary artists Peter Doig and Mamma Andersson, and self-taught artists Henry Darger (1892-1973) and William Hawkins (1895-1990), McGrath harnessed a narrative approach in his own practice. “I decided to experiment with figures and storytelling in my painting,” he tells Colossal. He also counts Jim Henson among his influences.
“Threats and competition for tiny vampires” (2023), graphite, colored pencil, and India ink on wood panel, 14 x 11 inches
Populated with an array of characters, from trees with alarmed expressions to tiny, fairy-like black critters with bulbous wings and long legs, McGrath delves into mysterious, emotional tales with plots as enigmatic as they are supernatural.
The artist’s interest in painting evolved from an early fascination with design, especially album covers and advertising in magazines like Spin and Thrasher. “I never had the patience to develop classical skills, so I focused on dimensional and collage work for a while, until I eventually decided to invest more time in painting,” he says.
McGrath’s work will be part of an online group show with MePaintsMe, Slight of Hand, which opens on November 12. In February, he will also have pieces on view in a group show at Court Tree Collective in Brooklyn.
“Monster control, future systems No. 3,” (2024), acrylic, oil stick, and oil on canvas, 78 x 120 inches
“Night float, threat window” (2024), oil and oil stick on canvas, 60 x 48 inches
“Hunting songs” (2024), oil, oil stick, and grease pencil on linen, 30 x 24 inches
“Muppet moon nightmare choir” (2024), acrylic, acrylic yarn, embroidery thread, painted canvas, and burlap on burlap, 40 x 30 inches
“Moon float” (2024), acrylic, watercolor crayon, enamel, and oil pastel on canvas, 60 x 48 inches
“Stories to frighten your children with and dangerous literature” (2023), oil, oil pastel, and acrylic on linen, 30 x 40
“Cat song, moon riot, No. 2” (2024), oil on canvas, 48 x 36 inches

Steven Universe headcanons about Steven and the crystal gems putting on a circus in Beach City and performing as acts in the show
Thanks for the request! Interesting one for sure!
Ps - This will be an AU where Steven and the gang work as a traveling, family circus. Occasionally fighting monsters in their free time.
“Come one, come all to the Crystal Circus! Feast your eyes on beauty, power, and tons of fun!”
- 🎪 -
“I’m your ringmaster and host, Steven Universe!”
Steven would of course be the ringmaster, but could occasionally fill for someone by juggling, doing trapeze stunts, and perhaps a musical song or two.
Definitely has a collection of different color top hats and suits.
Makes sure at least half of the money earned for the show goes to some charity.
- 🎪-
“And here comes Pearl, our lead tightrope walker and gymnast!”
Pearl’s flawless and gracefulness shine whether it’s dancing along the tightrope, or performing elegant gymnastics moves that never not make the crowds be impressed.
Will occasionally do some ribbon dancing alongside Connie.
- 🎪 -
“And alongside Pearl is the lovely Connie! A knight, a performer, and my wonderful girlfriend!”
“Steven!” 0///0
Connie began to perform after meeting with Steven and seeing his show live.
After finding out about the secret vigilante stuff in the background, she decided to join in.
Alongside school (online), violin lessons (also online), she trains in sword fighting and ribbon dancing with Pearl (which only the latter is in the show, since her parents didn’t approve).
- 🎪 -
“Next up, is the duo pair that is Lapis and Peridot! Performing an array of music, artwork, and fun!”
Lapis was reluctant at first to join, only performing a couple of times for Steven. But eventually she found a love of doing watercolor art.
Peridot was basically the same, only performing for Steven. Then she found her metal powers, and used such to perform music and occasionally put on a drone performance.
Lapis also incorporates her art into Peridot’s performance, using her water bending to form different pieces of art related to the music. A very much crowd favorite.
- 🎪 -
“Weren’t they great? And next up is the power of the circus, the beast that can take the heat. It’s Amethyst, or the Purple Puma for you wresting fans in the crowd. Wink.”
Amethyst decided to mix her favorite things in her act.
Eating crazy things (to a human’s perspective like fireworks, which makes her spit out active fireworks from her mouth. A favorite among the kids.), showing off some wrestling moves (Pearl’s holo clones help), and even got Lion involved to jump through hoops while she “sparked” her whip in the air.
She sometimes gets Jasper involved in her act, mainly as another wrestler.
- 🎪 -
“While we put out the purple flames, thanks Amethyst, please give a big welcome to my dad Mr. Universe!”
When Greg ran away from home and eventually landed in Beach City, he found out of the Crystal Circus, with Rose performing a ballet act with Pearl.
Eventually he became the manager, and kept doing so even after Steven was born. Though he of course, has Pearl and Peridot help money wise.
Otherwise, he performs his music to the crowd like he would back in his rockstar days. Even sometimes fusing with Steven for the final act of the show if there is enough time.
- 🎪 -
“Next up is the ice and fire of the show, the favorite couple award winners for over a thousand years. Ruby and Sapphire! Oh, and Garnet too!”
Garnet would usually be the solo act, with Ruby and Sapphire rarely performing.
Hence, why Steven usually has to introduce the pair first, since the two haven’t unfused and performed since Rose was around.
Sapphire would either sing, ice skate, or perhaps tell a glimpse in the future of a lucky person in the crowd.
Ruby would usually do weight lifting, with Amethyst putting on a crazy amount of weight each round. Or she would do a fire bending show, creating fire bending performances of past adventures.
As Garnet, she would do a mix of dancing, singing, and boxing (Pearl clones or Jasper helping).
- 🎪 -
“And let’s not forget our weapon expert and wielder Bismuth!”
Bismuth was reluctant to perform again, after Rose being gone and the aftermath.
But once she began to do so again, she remembered why she did so in the first place.
Weapon making was a treat to the crowd, for you never know what she could make, especially when she talks of the history and adventures that went with said weapon.
A perfect ending performance, espically since people love to hear, “It was nice doing Bismuth with you!”
- 🎪 -
“Wasn’t that great? Well folks, it’s been fun, but it’s time to pack it up now. But don’t worry! We’ll be performing three times this week before we hit the road as usual, so get your tickets as you walk out. Believe in the Crystal Gems! Bye!”

artist quastions
1. Art programs you have but don't use
Probably CSP. It's one of the few software I actually legally bought. But their new monetization policy is just not for me. It's a genuinely good program for artists and I may use it again in the future (especially for the 3D functionality. If that hasn't been priced out yet...). I also have SAI installed. It's fun and runs very smoothly. I should use it more often. I also have krita if i want to do frame by frame animation.
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)
I usually flip my canvas often so it's kind of a 50/50. It depends on the character if they're easier to draw facing forward or to the side.
3. What ideas come from when you were little
Man... I honestly don't know. As a kid I wanted to make a pet game (similar to neopets I guess) where you could earn currency and buy stuff and dress up your pet. I still really like pet games and collection games and trinkets. I would love to make a trinket collection game.
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
Industrial landscapes and scenes. Painting a factory or trains or roads being repaired is fun. Until you actually have to do that....
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
It used to be maybe 90/10. Now its probably 40/60. I used to just. Start a painting and always finish it and post it. I didn't really sketch or doodle stuff without finishing it or give up on paintings and discard them.
Now I like doodling and exploring stuff on my own more. I have a ton of files that are just 20000 layers of different sketches. I also discard artworks much more often.
6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it)
I honestly can't tell. People don't compare my work to anything often. I can't tell if it looks like anything...
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
Traditional art. 3d art. Animation of all kinds. Fibre arts. Sculpture. Film. Writing. Theatre. Music. I mean yeah. All. Art. Very broad very vague answer but it's trueee. I appreciate and am inspired by everything I see
Less broadly... Watercolor painters...
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in
I am starting to not be interested in anything....... When I was a child I used to have an 'ask blog' of sorts for my characters. I don't really have anything like that anymore :(
9. What are your file name conventions
Gibberish unless it's a commission. Comms get labelled with the customers name.
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
I like drawing the nude figure 💯💯💯. Mmm probably gloves or hi-vis gear. Work clothes. Overalls. Rubber boots. Belts and harnesses.
11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what
Usually music or youtube videos. I often get anxious and scared so I draw with a single song on repeat to keep my mind off it.
12. Easiest part of body to draw
Arms and legs... Probably... Maybe breasts also.
13. A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing
I can't tell. If I admire someone's work I consider it to be 'my thing'. I think there's certain people whose work ethic and drive to create I admire while not really being interested in the subject matter.
I admire artists from dA or FA who draw 'weird' things or their gallery is filled with the same thing over and over, or just people who are laser focused on their subject matter of choice. I'm fascinated by 'widely known in narrow circles' type of thing. I love extremely niche communities 👍
14. Any favorite motifs
Industriallllll..... Concrete. Grime. Rust. Metal. Sparks. Pipes. Wires. Blood and gore. Dilapidated and abandoned places. Small places and things not always noticed. Scary and cute things ^_^
15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth)
Usually just at my desk.
16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing
This is a hard one.... I usually choose to draw what I enjoy.
I guess rendering if I was forced to render something I don't like?
17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what
It depends. I drink tea in all circumstances.
18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken
As a child I broke a wacom intuos tablet I got as a gift. Still not over it because it was quite expensive. Don't think I broke anything else unless breaking my computer also counts. I broke several laptops as a child...
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
FACTORY 💯💯💯 Nature and plants too but the prize has to go to industrial infrastructure. Even if I'm not good at it.
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
Hands 🙌. Animals ? Various textures ?
21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways
I can't list them all 🥲 I love to be inspired by artworks that are nothing like mine. I really admire dynamic and expressive cartoon/simplistic styles. Artstyles well adapted for hand drawn animation are also amazing.
22. What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any
I need to be actually doing this more. Squats, wall angels and just rotating my joints are my usual go-to. I also like to twist myself but idk if that actually does anything. I like hearing my spine crack 😄
23. Do you use different layer modes
I used to use multiply for shading but I don't anymore. I like using gradient maps and Hue/Lightness/Saturation layer modes. I also tend to just cycle through all layer styles to see if anything looks good. Overlay, darker/lighter color, add are useful on occasion. I try to not rely heavily on layer styles because it quickly turns into me agonizing over 2% opacity changes and shifting colors over and over. Instead of actually painting.
24. Do your references include stock images
Yeah. Sometimes. I just google or go on pinterest to find stuff I need.
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by
I can't tell. People don't compare my works to anything.
26. What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended
I honestly don't know... Everyone has a different interpretation of any work and I enjoy hearing about people's opinions. I can't really recall a 'wild' interpretation...
27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with
I try to! It's good practice. Usually it ends up in me hating the first iteration of a painting and re-doing it from scratch. But usually I just draw the pose/composition I want over and over until it looks good enough to proceed.
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
Probably. I can't remember though.
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
I have no idea. I think I'm inspired subconsciously by everything I ever experience. It probably doesn't immediately show in my actual artworks but it's there.
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
All of them 💯💯💯💯💯
I don't really pay attention to how pieces are received. There's pieces I'm proud of and pieces I'm not. Other people either get it or don't...
@gothglam now its your turn ❗

Oooo 14, 28, 33
14. what’s something you’ve always wanted to do but maybe been to scared to do? OH BOY I am saving this question to give to my therapist the next time I see her, because I just like. Fully bluescreened for a minute after reading it haha. (The concepts of "always wanted to" and "been scared of but still wanted to do" are uhhh challenging for me). But! After much consideration, I think we can put "relearn to ride a bike" in this category. I was taught as a kid, but I have a vivid memory of saying "I'm doing it!" and then immediately falling over and that's...the last I remember of the bike learning process. It wasn't exactly useful as a means of transportation where I grew up, and there were other more fun ways to get exercise, so I just...didn't. Now that I live in a place where there are more opportunities, it would be nice to know how, but the fear of falling hasn't diminished and in fact has probably gotten worse as I've aged.
28. do you collect anything? Not precisely on purpose, but I have acquired a steady stream of enamel pins and buttons (particularly union buttons) over the past few years. Most of the union buttons would expose a little more info about me than I necessarily want to put on Tumblr, but here is a selection that lives on one of my jackets:
33. any hobbies? The short answer here is "SO MANY". Long answer, I'm a bit of a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to certain categories of hobby, which are:
fiber crafts - Crochet and hand sewing (particularly mending) are my favorites, but over the years I have tried my hand at quilting, knitting, spinning, embroidery, needle felting, and probably a few others I've forgotten
visual/fine arts - drawing and painting (watercolor) are my favorites, but I have played around with most kinds of paint and various forms of sculpture. I actually majored in art but I kinda knew the whole time that I didn't see it as a professional plan, just something I wanted to learn more about. I've also been doing a lot of digital painting over the past few years, which is entirely self-taught.
writing - fanfic! Original fic! Poetry! Filk! Several attempts at novels have also been made, I spent a number of years working on longform projects before I got into writing fanfic and realized short form writing (for a given value of "short") is a little more manageable.
TTRPGs - I'm in two different tabletop roleplaying groups (one online for DnD, one in-person for the Marvel Super Heroes RPG)
Music - I joined a local labor choir last year and it has become one of my favorite things. "Choir" is a bit of a misnomer, but there's not a more concise word for "ragtag group of folks who hang out and sing union and anti-fascist songs together for two hours a week, who WILL show up at your protest, rally, or picket line if you tell us about it" haha. We actually are working on some more formal choral arrangements for upcoming May Day festivities, but at any given practice we're just as likely to go on a "songs about public transit" or "how many different languages can we sing in tonight" deep dive.

The Ultimate Guide to Brush Markers: A Deep Dive into Tools, Techniques, and Tips
In the world of art supplies, brush markers stand out as versatile tools loved by artists, designers, and hobbyists alike. Whether you're a seasoned illustrator or just starting to explore the colorful realm of markers, understanding the nuances of brush markers can transform the way you create. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into everything you need to know about brush markers—covering their features, uses, techniques, and more.
What Are Brush Markers?
Brush markers are a unique type of marker that features a flexible brush-like tip. Unlike traditional markers with rigid tips, brush markers offer varying line widths and the ability to create both fine details and broad strokes. These markers contain ink that flows smoothly, allowing for seamless blending and layering of colors.
Types of Brush Markers
Alcohol-Based Markers: These markers use alcohol as a solvent for the ink, resulting in quick-drying, vibrant colors. Brands like Copic and Prismacolor are renowned for their alcohol-based brush markers, known for their blendability and professional quality.
Water-Based Markers: Water-based brush markers use water-soluble ink, which makes them ideal for creating watercolor-like effects. Brands such as Tombow Dual Brush Pens and Winsor & Newton Watercolor Markers fall into this category.
Acrylic-Based Markers: Acrylic-based brush markers contain acrylic ink, offering permanent, opaque colors suitable for various surfaces, including paper, wood, and canvas.
Features of Brush Markers
Brush Tip: The flexible brush tip allows for precise control over line thickness. It mimics the strokes of a paintbrush, making it suitable for calligraphy, lettering, and illustrating.
Ink Quality: High-quality brush markers feature ink that is rich, blendable, and doesn't streak. Ink formulations vary between brands, offering different drying times, opacities, and blending capabilities.
Color Range: Brush markers are available in a vast array of colors, from vibrant primaries to subtle pastels. Some brands offer refillable markers, allowing artists to customize their color collections.
Blendability: Many brush markers are designed for blending, either by layering colors directly on paper or using a blender marker to soften edges and create gradients.
How to Use Brush Markers
Basic Techniques:
Brush Lettering: Use the brush tip for elegant calligraphy and lettering.
Color Blending: Layer and blend colors to create smooth transitions.
Watercolor Effects: Apply color, then use a wet brush to create watercolor effects.
Highlighting and Shading: Vary pressure and strokes to add depth and dimension.
Paper Selection:
Choose smooth, heavyweight paper to prevent bleeding and feathering.
Experiment with different papers to find the ideal surface for your style.
Blending Tools:
Use a colorless blender marker or a brush dipped in alcohol (for alcohol-based markers) to blend colors seamlessly.
Tips for Getting Started
Practice Pressure Control: Experiment with varying pressure to master line thickness and brush control.
Start with Primary Colors: Begin with a basic color palette and gradually expand your collection.
Watch Tutorials: Online tutorials and demonstrations can provide invaluable tips and inspiration.
Experiment with Surfaces: Try using brush markers on different surfaces such as canvas, wood, or fabric.
Care and Maintenance
Cap Carefully: Always recap markers when not in use to prevent drying out.
Store Horizontally: Store markers horizontally to ensure even ink flow.
Clean Tips: Clean brush tips regularly with a soft cloth to prevent ink buildup.

Final Thoughts
Brush markers are a fantastic addition to any artist's toolkit, offering versatility and vibrant color possibilities. Whether you're creating intricate illustrations, expressive lettering, or mixed media artworks, brush markers empower you to explore and experiment with your creativity. With the right techniques and practice, you can unlock the full potential of these dynamic markers and elevate your art to new heights. So, Holbein has 24 new granulating watercolors. Currently, they're only available in Japan (North American release late summer/early fall).
I was initially really excited to play with these. I use Holbein's pre-existing colors and really appreciate the vibrancy of their watercolors. (They're also much more affordable if you import rather than by from a US-based distributor.)
These are all vegan-friendly based pigments and with 24 colors, I was hoping this could be a good starter set to recommend for people who like the granulating look. Holbein prides itself on how finely ground it's pigments are, so you can get very even, flat washes easily. These present something quite different, with 20/24 including new pigments to their line.
It's got a nice range of colors with a saturated blood/wine red being the biggest exception. I think the only one I could say I hate is the sakura/cherry blossom; it looks like Pepto Bismal with a chalky texture (probably from the Chinese/Titanium white pigment).
Excluding the pastel set, Holbein's existing sets all include ivory black—derived from bone char and the lone animal-based color in Holbein's entire watercolor set. This one, is entirely vegan.
I'm still in the playing stage, but I'm kinda disappointed. They're all convenience colors (having 2 or more pigments), and, unfortunately, easily turn into muddy colors when mixing. They all have some degree of staining, so if you do a lot of lifting work, this could be difficult.
It feels like these colors are intended for painting quicker, rather than building up colors. As previously mentioned, four of the colors can be made with Holbein's existing colors. Manually mixing made much more interesting colors (while having added control over were pigments can seperate).

So, I have ask these questions (ask game) to quite a few people, but most of their unpopular media, at least I know one of them. Except yours (sorry). Can I ask what made you love these 3 media : Child of Light (Video Game), School - Live! (Anime), The Unlisted (TV Show)?
Also, it's okay to be an Oikawa fan (he is also in my top 3 fav Haikyuu characters). And yes, I agree with all you say about him as a character. Though, I pity him a little because in twitter he must be on the same list as any other anime antagonist/villains that are murderer or terrorist or worst 😑😶
Have you finished Haikyuu, Mania-sama? A bit spoiler : he became Argentinian citizen and at the end of manga, his team vs Japanese team (with Kageyama and Hinata). Oh and Iwaizumi became athletic trainer in Japanese team (ironic, right)....
Oh, can I ask what do you think of Oikawa/Ushijima and Oikawa/Kageyama ships?
Some say, Ushijima or Kenma or Miya twins are the best antagonist of Haikyuu. But come on, we know better, right 😆😄? (Along with the majority of Haikyuu fans)....
P.s Do you know why Furudate sensei don't draw Oikawa that many? Because "He is an ikemen (so handsome), that I have to make him look good in every panel (and that is hard)"...😉
hello again!!!
No worries! That's why I listed them - I NEVER set people talk about those three online. EVER. I was not expecting for you to recognize them, or anyone to for that matter!
Child of Light -> Honestly, just an incredibly spectacular game. It takes about ten-twelve hours for a full playthrough without breaks, including side quests and messing with certain crystal combinations for upgrades. It's short, it's simple, it's sweet, but it is just. Beautiful. Very unique, and I haven't quite found a game like this since. One of the stand-out parts of this video game is that it is written entirely in verse. All of the character's sentences and words rhyme, aside from one character, Rubella, a jester, who consistently doesn't say the right word to make the rhyme complete or flow. The introduction of the game is also told in a soothing voice. The vibes are impeccable. Then, not to mention the visuals of this game are in a watercolor art style. It's just... unique and absolutely stunning to look at. The soundtrack is just banger after banger. I strongly encourage everyone to listen to it. Not that you have to intensely focus on the music, but just enjoy the atmosphere it brings. I was actually among the artists' top listeners on Spotify last year, and it was only from listening to the Child of Light soundtrack. The story itself is simple, but that doesn't mean it's not fun or impactful. You play as a little girl who has, well, died from illness, and wakes up on an altar in a "strange, new land" that has fallen to darkness. It is up to you to save the land of Lemuria from monsters and the evil, dark queen. The monsters are really fun to fight and look at (as in, their designs and the way they are drawn are phenomenal). The upgrade system isn't hard to grasp at all, either. You collect characters and help them in their stories. It's a fun, turn-based combat RPG. Everyone should play it, honestly. It's my favorite game. (Oh, yeah, you have a cute sidekick with a quick-wit, too).
School - Live! -> Okay, this anime isn't as phenomenal as Child of Light, but it sticks out in my mind anyway for the way it masterfully portrayed the world it's set in. It's about a group of girls who have a club at their school where they essentially live together at the school. Seems kind of odd, but they are happy with it and enjoy being each other's friends. Well. Turns out the main character is very, very delusional while trying to cope with the world around her. And the world around here is trapped in a zombie apocalypse. It's intriguing to me how her friends try to preserve her delusions (obviously a coping mechanism that I love seeing portrayed in media) while also keeping themselves alive. The narrative bounces back and forth between the main character's delusional reality where everything is normal to the bloody classrooms, reeking dead bodies, and boarded windows. The characters are all flawed individuals who, while being able to deal with the apocalypse, still struggle and flounder and yell and scream. It's just absolute whiplash tilting between these two realities, and it's done very well. Also, the intro song is a banger.
The Unlisted -> This TV show has more similarities to School - Live!, than it does to Child of Light, but is still pretty unique. It's about this organization that brings dental health to students in Australia, but in reality, they are chipping students in the mouth with trackers that can, essentially, brainwash and mind control the kids into mindless machines. The trackers also increase their strength and dexterity (I don't know how it works; some suspension of disbelief is required to enjoy this). The main characters, two twin brothers, find out what's going on in their school after one of the twins purposefully goes into the "dental checkup" twice in place of his brother. The main characters then find out about the existence of a group of runaway kids who are being tracked by the organization because they are all "Unlisted" - kids who were meant to be chipped, but somehow escaped - and conspire to both help the kids and inform the world about the truth of the organization. It's VERY entertaining. I fell in love with the characters and their relationships. The acting is... rough, especially in the beginning, but you get through it for the plot I swear. All of it pretty much hits my fancy; runaway kids, trauma and injury, mind control, funny banter, and family. I just. Really like it. And everyday I think: wow, what a shame this never got a second season. Because it is good and I love it :(. I've attempted to write this as an AU multiple times for different fandoms, but I never succeeded. Who knows, maybe one day I will.
Anyway, Oikawa being "the most evil anime villain" jokes will never not be funny to me. He is just so easy to pick on. I did see recently on Tiktok a video where they said off-handedly and in seriousness that Oikawa and Dazai Osamu from Bungou Stray Dogs were very similar, and I had to do a double-take. No. They are not similar. Not in the slightest. One has conspired to murder/has murdered HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE and is a LUNATIC. The other is a high schooler who plays fucking volleyball. Can we NOT. (It is really, really funny though. I hope the Internet never changes.)
I've considered rewatching the anime because of my recent sudden and violent re-hyperfixation, but I don't know if I'll ever get around to it. I have never actually read the manga for Haikyuu, but I do know about the time skip and how it ends. In fact, I've been writing a fanfiction about the IwaOi during the Japanese vs Argentina 2021 Olympic gold match (not rooted in reality, where Argentina received bronze and Japan came seventh in the actual 2020 Olympics). I hope to release it sometime soon. It's... interesting, I suppose. I'm up to my usual bullshit, and "usual bullshit" means that one character gets unreasonably hurt in some way. It brings me unparalleled happiness.
As far as OiUshi and OiKage, they aren't my favorite but I can certainly see the appeal. OiUshi less so - I think they have negative chemistry, but the idea of them being together is funny enough to be enjoyable for me. I have read one or two drabbles of them before. OiKage is a rather controversial ship, which I understand. I don't think it works well when they are high schoolers at all, but the idea of something shifting in their adulthood is a fascinating concept. I don't mind it, honestly. It would show a lot of character growth between the two characters both individually and together.

Been thinking about the EAH x Selfridges merch Mattel did around 2013... It's certainly something that existed. I never see people bring them up on here, so why not write a long post about it? A little thread below about this rather obscure collaboration:
The EAH x Selfridges was a rather limited time edition designer collaboration that was made for the Frieze Art Fair, which was held in London on October 15th 2013. They created a total of 8 exclusive items: 3 shirts, 4 bags and 1 doll.
Let's take a look at the shirts first. They made only 3 white shirts with Raven, Apple and the main core cast girls using watercolor paintings made by Princess Julia. They costed $30 each. More info about this can be found on Princess Julia's Blogspot.
(Apple and Maddie being mishmashed together on that 3rd shirt is kinda cursed ngl)
There were also carrier bags with these same paintings that were given away around the time of the event.
There was also these bags. According to the little info available about it, they costed around $250 each, and were made by four different designers in the Selfridges team: Claire Barrow, Ashley Williams, Ryan Lo and Bobby Abley, which were all inspired by EAH characters:
The first one with the racoon bag was created by designer Ashley Williams inspired by... Apple White? This is what Williams said about the design choice:
"I was inspired by Apple White who is the daughter of Snow White," said Williams. "I thought it would be cute for her to have a woodland creature as her pet, so the handbag I've designed is in the shape of a raccoon as I thought its stripy tail would be cool in multicolour." Source: Vogue
The shattered mirror looking one is inspired by Raven Queen and was created by Claire Barrow, whom quoted:
"I've been inspired by the daughter of The Evil Queen in Snow White. I wanted to do something with a smashed mirror to show rebellion against her past and against the traditional norms of beauty." Source: Vogue
We also got these three tea bags designed by Ryan Lo and who were inspired by Madeline Hatter (mostly based on her color pallete)
And last we have this bear-bag designed by Bobby Abley, and which it was inspired by Blondie Lockes.
(Personal opinion: I think it was a rather weird design choice to make this bag's colors red and white. Aside from the bear theme going on, It doesn't bear much resemblance to Blondie's design, I think it would have looked better if they gave it a Blue/Yellow scheme to it, but this is just my opinion lmao)
And last but not least, we also got this ""Blondie Lockes"" exclusive doll (let's be real that's not Blondie that's an Apple doll ffs) which was also made by Bobby Abley. According to the very first pic in the thread, the doll was sold for $120 (apparently).
(Also I've never seen anyone with this doll in their collection, it's so obscure that not even pictures of her doll box are available online, very interesting indeed).
Like I said before, there is not much information about this collaboration online, and I could not find any pictures or posts of people owning these merch, aside from the ones that were took in the aforementioned Frieze Art Fair, like the ones below:
Source: Wonderland Magazine
More pictures from the art fair, including the last two can be found on this link. (I didn't want to include all photos of the event cause it'll make the post even more longer than it already is oops)
Anyways! I think this was a really interesting collaboration, and I wanted more EAH fans to know about it, cause again I feel that it's not really brought up much (and I can see why, there's not much info about it online) I hope this thread was worth the read :)
#eah#ever after high#long post#fashion design#idk how to tag this help#I mostly took most of my sources that were sited in the eah wiki ... it was the easiest way to find info about this collab#apple white#briar beauty#raven queen#madeline hatter#blondie lockes

hi Živa!! i'm a big BIG admirer of your art (i'm sure you get it all the time, but there's something so extremely lovely and light-handed about the way you draw characters, and their expressions just OOMPH they land right where they're supposed to) and i'm just now starting to get into digital art. I was wondering if you could tell me about what kinds of brushes you use for your comics? I'm looking specifically at the ml ones, like the pikapolonica comic - it's got such a nice clear, clean, but kinda soft, texture that i love! it looks so good in b&w too, and as a longtime ink user, that look reallyyy appeals to me thank you for reading!! xoxo
Thank you so much for this comment, it made my day :)
As for the brushes that I use in most of my recent drawings... I actually bought them on creative market. Probably my first purchase for something that isn't physical.
I was making a picture book as part of my thesis that was supposed to be drawn with a mix of watercolor and colored pencils. but just as I finished all the proof illustrations (is that the correct word combination??) and was happy with the style and look, corona hit and i had to move home where i didn't really have the space and tools to pull off the illustrations this way, so i came to the hard decision to switch to digital but still mimic the analogue technique (because honestly I really dislike digitally drawn children's picture books, so trying to at least make mine seem like it wasn't digital was important to me). So I bought a couple of professional brush packs and I loved the brushes so much I now use them for almost everything.
this is the collection that has the inky ones you mentioned -> https://creativemarket.com/Dukal/130710-The-Cartoonist-Brushes
but if you're just staring out and experimenting with digital drawing i recommend just finding free brushes that people share online. there's a bunch of really good ones you can find. My main go to site for that has always been deviantart
wish you lots of fun in your artistic journey!

How to Choose the Perfect Tattoo Artist
Getting a tattoo is a significant and permanent decision, so choosing the right tattoo artist is crucial to ensure you end up with a piece of art that you'll love for a lifetime. With countless tattoo artists out there, finding the one who can bring your vision to life while prioritizing safety and quality can be a daunting task. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of selecting a good tattoo artist.
Research, Research, Research
Before you even set foot in a tattoo studio, invest time in research. Begin by looking for tattoo parlors in your area and reading reviews online. Websites like Yelp, Google Reviews, and social media platforms can provide valuable insights into the reputation of a studio and its artists. Look for artists who consistently receive positive feedback for their work.
Portfolio Evaluation
A tattoo artist's portfolio is their calling card. It's a collection of their previous work that showcases their style, skill level, and versatility. When reviewing a portfolio:
Pay attention to the artist's style: Tattoo artists often specialize in specific styles like traditional, realism, black and gray, or watercolor. Choose an artist whose style aligns with the design you want.
Look for consistency: Consistency in the quality of work is a crucial indicator. An artist with a diverse portfolio but consistently high-quality tattoos is a good sign.
Check for relevant experience: If you have a unique or intricate design in mind, make sure the artist has experience with similar projects.
Licensing and Certification
Tattoo artists should adhere to health and safety regulations. Check if the artist is licensed and certified by the appropriate local authorities. They should follow strict hygiene practices, use sterilized equipment, and maintain a clean working environment. Don't hesitate to ask about their safety protocols; a professional artist will be happy to explain their procedures.
Consultation
Schedule a consultation with the artist you're interested in. This is an opportunity to discuss your design, ask questions, and get a feel for their personality and professionalism. During the consultation:
Share your ideas and expectations.
Ask about their process, including pricing, estimated time, and any necessary preparations.
Discuss any concerns you might have about the design, placement, or aftercare.
Ask for Recommendations
If you have friends or acquaintances with tattoos you admire, don't hesitate to ask for recommendations. Personal referrals can be invaluable, as you can see the artist's work firsthand and hear about the client's experience.
Attend Tattoo Conventions and Expos
Tattoo conventions and expos are excellent places to discover talented tattoo artists from various regions. These events often feature a wide range of artists, allowing you to see their work up close and speak with them directly.
Trust Your Gut Feeling
Ultimately, choosing a tattoo artist is a personal decision. Trust your instincts and choose an artist you feel comfortable with. If something doesn't feel right during the consultation or you have doubts about their abilities, it's perfectly acceptable to explore other options.
Conclusion
Selecting the right tattoo artist is a crucial step in the tattooing process. It's a decision that requires research, careful consideration, and trust in your instincts. By thoroughly evaluating portfolios, checking certifications, consulting with artists, and seeking recommendations, you can increase your chances of finding a talented and professional tattoo artist who can turn your vision into a work of art that you'll proudly wear for the rest of your life.

Whipping out the easel and watercolors today for something new.
I’m going to be doing a limited series of animal paintings on these 228 labels and popping them into frames for folks to collect
In May or June-ish we need to rent a vehicle and travel to Montana to load up all of my late mom’s possessions outta storage and move them here to PDX.
It’s probably going to cost around $2000 and I need to start selling more work to save money for that (on top of paying off the thousands in debt we still owe for having her cremated)
So I’ll be making more physical art to put into my online shop over the following weeks. Any sales of ANYTHING during the next few months - stickers, paintings, commissions - are going to help make life a lot easier for myself & my fam.
I really, deeply appreciate the support we’ve received. This is a time that is going to change my family’s lives forever and being able to at least alleviate a little of the financial stress is a huge blessing
On a related note: I advise everyone to open a life insurance policy because SURPRISE like everything else in this country, death is expensive
Alright. Lotsa love, y’all - now I gotta get to work
