Qrow and RNJR vs Tyrian is such a SAD fight scene to me tbh like it's just the combination of it coming right after they've all travelled through all these pillaged towns and watched people die in preventable ways in a region that’s already notorious for being borderline uninhabitable on TOP of having come back from Beacon falling and losing Pyrrha & Penny... just Ruby pushing herself to fight Tyrian bc she feels obligated to do so out of already carrying guilt over all those people she couldn't save so that no-one else around her gets hurt (because of her) and Qrow trying to keep the kids out of the fight because he doesn't want anyone to get hurt (because of him). On top of the fact that Tyrian as a >30-something yo guy just decides to call the Actual Child(TM) he was threatening and stalking and attempting to kidnap a bitch regardless of whether or not it's in the heat of the moment and she maimed him that shit tends to stick in ur mind bruh

weekly freakout: 9.4 edition

well okay. i think last week i was caught in the grips of existential despair about this fic and honestly, i wasn't wrong about it but this week was a new week and i've made a lot of progress in terms of filling in the blank spots and i'm comfortable moving to editing mode at this point. some scenes are much more lightly sketched than others, and i knew when i made those decisions that my future self would be unhappy with me about it but, you know. what else was i supposed to do? i've never written a fic this long before and i didn't want to commit to too many firm details/key decisions before i knew everything that was going to happen. it's been a really good learning experience - like, 10/10, would draft a fic this way again and not hate myself about it later.

anyway word count will start mattering less to me (i tell myself now ahahahahaha it's such a lie) so i'm going to try to stop tracking it so much as i move into hardcore .v2 mode but it is, in fact, a hard habit to break. so we'll see.

uh if all goes well, hoping to have full .v2 by mid-september and then hoping to find a kind soul to beta the draft before the third draft - i'm guessing this will go .v4 as my fics tend to when editing but i'm STRUGGLING with certain emotional beats/foreshadowing/transitions and having another set of eyes would be very handy. .v2 will be fleshing things out, .v3 will be nuking as much purple prose as i can stand (purple prose my beloved), and .v4 is usually eliminating commas and semicolons and repeat words (god i have used 'haul' so many times in this fic, and the phrase 'salt tang' and probably forty others that i'm not even aware of yet).

To be honest wasn't even thinking about it being V4 connected, Just something disconnected like most Fangans i've seen Kill/Cure Edens Garden and Despair Time..Actually aside from Anohter 1 and 2 how many fangans connect to the main series?

when I said Branching paths I meant of course multiple endings, but I kind of thinking visual novel style? The survivors you manage to save or kill decide the ending. though that would be difficult as well..so 4-5 different endings with depending on one character you manage to save..say Fire Emblem: Three Houses

A danganronpa fan project?? in MY 2024?? NEVER !!

Well, yes! Actually. Danganronpa V4 - Despairful Distrust is a Fan Project ran (primarily) by me! Gravesenvyalt! Or simply Envy. This project isn't just influenced by Danganronpa! It has large influences from Ace Attorney and some smaller, more niche things such as Your Turn To Die. It will also be filled with references to things such as Yokai Watch, Genshin Impact, Tarot, and probably a bunch of other small things (I'm too lazy to go count lol) On this page, i'll be posting progress, character designs, hosting character polls, and, some other things relating to the project! (Story Details Below!)

In this Danganronpa Fan project, you play as Kamia, the Ultimate Prisoner (Oh, did i mention this takes place in a prison? Yeah, it does.) Kamia wakes up in a cell, with no memory of the night before, except for being on the phone with her lawer, Feng- Oh, he's here to. And so are 14 other people, ranging from small, energetic gardeners or stoic and imposing prosecutors. There's no knowing what would happen next.

Danganronpa Mauve- Probably becoming less obscure since Weeby Newz covered it. Playable fangame. What interests me the most is that it seems to be going for a class warfare/ differences theme, though that might just be what I'm reading into it. Do you think Juane's rabbit is his physical reminder that he, himself cannot get where he needs on time? I believe it is there to help him as well as keep him subjugated with his sorrow.

I don’t know. My thoughts on Jaune haven’t gone past wanting to see him. From the intro though, considering the clock has already struck 12 I can see it being about how he feels like he’s always too late to make a difference.

I’m conflicted. On one hand it would nice to see him find inner strength and get back on his feet. On the other hand, Jaune needing help because he’s completely fallen into despair could parallel Ruby’s current struggle. Jaune’s tired of disappointing everyone/letting them down while Ruby is sick of losing her friends to what feels like her own incompetence as a huntress/leader.

I think the two of them might need another heart to heart like in V1 and V4. Jaune always tries to keep Ruby’s spirits help and Ruby has always been one of the first to keep an eye out on Jaune; coming to his aid. It sounds a little corny but their friendship really highlights the people they try to be for everyone.

I saw your post on the V7 intro and YEAH. IT BOTHERS ME TOO.

I’m an avid listener of the rwby soundtracks. And it was just so weird to have Trust Love, something so up beat and fun be the opening to the volume that tail spins into oblivion.

The lyrics are clear tho.

“Trust love and open up your eyes. The truth is there but sometimes in disguise.”

“When we trust in love an open up our eyes.”

“Instead your counting on that second sight”

ITS ABOUT THE EYES. ITS ALWAYS ABOUT THE EYES with Rwby. And while the opening is significant to some degree for V7. It actually feels more like it’s Foreshadowing v9.

Maybe it’s too much of a stretch. But if you really pay attention to the lyrics. Trust love is about believing and trusting yourself. Trusting your gut. In order to do the right thing. There’s a lot of self reflection involved. Which is supposed to be 9s core theme. And sure maybe it’s coincidently but. There’s something about that song that’s just a little too whimsical. And little too on the nose for kids who were dragged into a seemingly endless war and want to be whisked away or written into a fairy tail so all their problems could disappear. And v9 comes in and subverts that

hgjfjbd i promise u i PROMISE “trust love is foreshadowing for team rwby v9 arcs that hasn’t come due yet” is far less of a stretch than mine (and also tbh, i think probably the take i would buy most out of the thoughts that have been shared so far on the grounds of it providing a reason for the tonal dissonance that makes sense to me). song abt rejecting fantasy and embracing, trusting what’s real being the only way forward followed by a volume where the kids get chucked into a literal fairytale world and have to escape is also, very rwby and the v8 opening sequence also pretty overtly gestures at v9 fairytale stuff (happy ever after/happy? never again) so like. . . yeah.

the thing is like?? i didn’t blink twice at trust love at first, because a) it was building from a pretty strong trend of openers getting more and more hopeful and upbeat from v4 onwards, and b) it came right on the heels of v6 ending on this triumphant beat of ruby intentionally activating her eyes for the first time by thinking about her loved ones, past and present. plus, as @habitual-shrimp summarized nicely in her rb, there’s a lot of “trust in love or give in to fear” arcs happening in v7, making trust love and fear logical bookends for the volume despite the…weird… tone thing.

BUT THEN

i made the mistake of paying attention to the lyrics a while back and my horrible gremlin brain zeroed in on this verse like a fucking shark detecting blood in the water: “if you could only open up a door/spread your wings and fly away from here/write yourself into a fairytale/all your problems would just disappear” and went oh that’s very specific imagery that evokes a very specific pair of characters doesn’t it AND THEN i was like wait a minute this is a song exhorting its subject to open their eyes, stop hiding, stop pretending, stop retreating into fantasy to cope with utter despair because no matter how dark it seems and no matter how many lies might obscure it the plain truth is that what they truly want is right in front of them staring them in the face if only they could stop burying themselves in fairytales and SEE CLEARLY for once—(at this point i went Oh No because this was a whole train wreck of a thought and yet)—it is. in short. a song in which the speaker urges the subject to let go of a metaphorical blindness so they can save themself by seeing their love aaand that is how i accidentally slammed myself face first into “turn love is a salem song playing conceptually with the blinding of rapunzel’s prince and eventual restoration of his sight by her tears” and now i CAN’T UNHEAR IT

it’s got coherent lyrical parallels to both sacrifice and until the end literally just kill me

it’s the opener for the volume in which ozpin is absent for 95% of the runtime because he’s sunk into the absolute depths of utter despair only to drag himself back up at the very end for a pensive, introspective, emotionally honest monologue on the subject of fear with until the end played under it in the exact moment of salem’s arrival in atlas!!!

hfghfns and like objectively this is Not What The Song Is (right?? it can’t be?) and if trust love weren’t so tonally perpendicular to its volume i probably wouldn’t be like “…UNLESS??” but it is and i am because it’s already weird why not?? read it as a deliberately discordant commentary on ozpin’s critical failures wrt salem and how the consequences of those failures have metastasized into retreating so far into denial and lies, insulating himself so thoroughly in the comforting simplicity of fairytales, that even he can’t really tell what’s true and what isn’t anymore, about her or about himself?? it’s NOT like his terrified refusal to engage with salem as a person which he passed down to the current generation as an inability to even conceive of brokering peace with the unbeatable enemy as a possibility at all is their biggest obstacle or anything except OH WAIT IT IS!!

anyway when i’m not preoccupied with being completely out of my mind about this song i figure it’s probably? maybe?? meant as a complement to for every life—the thematic and emotional fulcrum of the atlas arc is the realization of the ideological struggle between hope and fear, so trust love exemplifies pure hope just as for every life exemplifies pure, bleak despair? which in fairness, i guess, to my deranged brain, WOULD make sense of salem and oz having this presence in them akin to the presence they have in this will be the day and when it falls; in that v1/v3 they were the narrators and in v7/v8 they are the symbolic harbingers of hope (ozpin’s return in 7.13 marks an abrupt emotional about-face towards courage in the face of dire circumstances) and fear (salem’s arrival—well, you know). but hhhhhhhhhHHHHH

Strange Academy #9 Review

It’s bonding time with two of the sweetest characters in this comic book!

We get started with Calvin’s nightmare with one of the many foster parents he had throughout the years. I don’t believe he has done it, but there’s something about his jacket. Hold that thought, more on that later.

Wanda and her terrible outfit wakes him up and says that Mr. Sheridan will cover the matter about dreams in Nocturnal Architecture: The Study of Dreams during the second semester. For those you who don’t know, she’s talking about Rick Sheridan, the Sleepwalker’s vessel. At this point, I’m not that excited about mentions because, as we know, Rintrah was also mentioned but never made an appearance. On the other hand, Dead Girl showed up last issue. We’ll have to wait and see. In case you’re interested, Stephen has met the dream entity once in Sleepwalker #7 (1991). Next, Wanda reveals that it’s Family Day at Strange Academy.

Both Calvin and Doyle are quite uncomfortable with the event. Calvin had issues with foster parents while Doyle is, well, Dormammu’s son. They’re not getting any parents or guardians. I can’t help but feel that Clea should be there, except freaking Waid erased her memories so she isn’t aware of Stephen or his little school. Clea would make such a lovely cousin. YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME, WAID. When will this nightmare end? I mean, at some point, Dormammu will knock on her rebel door and mention him, right? And she’s gonna be like: “Who?” But I digress, I’m sorry.

Next, we’re introduced to some of the parents/guardians. Emily’s mom is... something. I found her rivalry with Loki absolutely delightful. I checked “Gudrun” on Marvel database and found out she was Volstagg’s daughter? That would make Volstagg Iric and Alvi’s grandfather. So Loki wouldn’t be their original uncle. It was just a pet name. But hey, I’m not into Thor lore, so if anyone knows what’s going on here, I’d appreciate a little help.

BUT WAIT. Did I get it right? Does Zoe have a crush on Dessy? OTP CONFIRMED. Absolutely loved their relationship development. Zoe used to find Dessy a creep, keeping her zombie secret to herself, but Dessy showed her that it’s okay and learned a lot about human emotions and boundaries. It’s quite sweet. Magic lesbians!! And speaking of which... Lucky S’ym Illyana wasn’t around. She’d kick his ass for sure.

I have no reasons whatsoever to mention Stephen but I will because this is my blog and it’s devoted to Stephen. So yes, have a random panel with Stephen because I can. I love the fact that he spent the entire issue levitating like a diva he is. Delicious food.

Meanwhile, Calvin and Doyle decide to break into the storage room. Doyle is looking for a gift for Emily, which is SO sweet ugh even though it’s called the Rose of Despair, which is probably bad news. I love how they talk about vulnerability and how it’s such a normal thing, especially for male characters. Boys out there, do talk more about your feelings. It’s really important and only makes you even more beautiful. Also... He got all flustered again!!! He’s so sweet!!! And oh, is he in love!!

Calvin accidently activates the Lightning Gauntlets, hitting Doyle. He’s okay but they’re interrupted by Mindless Ones. We finally learn why Doyle is uneasy near them. He feels bad for what Dormammu did to them, and they can’t help but see Dormammu when Doyle is around, triggering memories and traumas even for mindless beings. It’s the very first time I’ve read about the traumatic experiences behind those creatures, which is great! It explains why they’re made out of pure anger and even Dormammu is afraid of them. I also loved to learn that Doyle is not like his father. He probably wants to change the Dark Dimension when his time to rule comes (that is, assuming Dormammu will let him, which I find hard to believe).

Doyle is overwhelmed by them, so Calvin unleashes the power of the monster in his jacket. For a moment, he loses control, but Doyle brings him back. And that’s a very interesting point.

I apologize in advance, I don’t know if someone told me this or I wrote it before, it’s been a very long time (and for that reason, please let me know in order to give due credits). But there’s this theory that Calvin’s monster is actually Mr. Misery, which makes SO MUCH sense. Remember when Mr. Misery embraced Stephen before his final fight with Empirikul? And when he possessed Wong? What was the difference? I’d say there are two important points. 1) it depends on the user and their willpower to resist Mr. Misery and 2) Mr. Misery’s size.

Let’s say, the more the pain, the bigger and stronger he gets. And he was reduced to a small portion at the end of v4.

Besides, Calvin’s jacket has eyes and it’s quite gooey. It’s very similar to Mr. Misery. Not to mention how he can get a hold of its user.

I can’t help but wonder if Calvin’s jacket is actually Mr. Misery hiding its true form in order to grow stronger through Calvin’s pain. Remember, he never had good parents, is victim of bullying and is usually alone. That kid knows pain. And that makes him the perfect victim for Mr. Misery. Thoughts on it, anyone?

Moving on... Doyle and Calvin share a bonding time, which is precious.

But they’re not free from the cheesy games!!

Emily’s mother beat a god and she’s lousy about it. Emily introduces them to her family and boi, is it mutual or what? She’s blushing too. I’m sorry but that’s another OTP.

Lastly, Stephen shows the campus to the parents while the kids are racing again. It says “to be continued”, which means the parents will stay a little longer, I suppose.

Overall, I loved their interactions and how young and fresh the children are, figuring out their feelings and fears. I’m so relieved Doyle is back. But they’re still doing dangerous things like sneaking without supervision. They should’ve learned from the last issue.

Well. It was not bad. I enjoyed it, even though the story didn’t move forward. A nice reading.
