Today (4/19/24) is the last day to see Life Out of Balance at the Emily Davis Gallery at The University of Akron. The group show show includes work by Maria Uhase, Meryl Engler, Lori Kella, Benjamin Lambert, Michael Loderstedt, Eve Polzer, Ron Shelton, Ariel Bowman, and Corrie Slawson.
From the gallery-
When a tree falls in a forest, we may see it as the death of the tree. It stops photosynthesizing, growing, feeding its mycorrhizal symbionts, flowering, developing fruit, dispersing seeds, taking in carbon dioxide, and producing oxygen. But in the ecosystem, it begins a whole new life in decay. It feeds the soil and microbes through the decomposition of its tissues; it provides a place for fungi, mosses, and lichens to grow; and it becomes a protected habitat for a myriad of insects, mammals, and birds. This same tree, therefore, can be both dying and living at the same time, depending on perspective. It can be dead if considered separate from its surroundings, or it can be alive in its continued relationship within its ecosystem.
Humans can feel more alive by being integrated with the rest of the natural world. We are not living to our full potential, or allowing nature to be its full potential, when we consider ourselves as separate from it.
If we are to have hope for solving the complex environmental issues that are facing us today, we need to work with, rather than against, the forces of nature.
Below are a few more selections.
Ron Shelton, “Yellow Mosaic”, 2021, Plastic and wire
Ariel Bowman, “Wall Trophy Series”, 2019, (Cave Bear, Antique Bison, Early Horse, Saber Cat, Dodo, Brontotherium, Parasaurolophus), Unglazed, high fired porcelain; Maria Uhase, “Splitting Headache”, 2022 Ink on paper and “Softly”, 2023, Graphite on paper

New research challenges conventional wisdom on wet surface adhesion
Scientists at the University of Akron and the University of Pittsburgh have overturned long-held assumptions in new research that finds water can be a help for adhesion. Dr. Ali Dhinojwala, distinguished W. Gerald Austen Endowed Chair and H.A. Morton Professor at The University of Akron's School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, led a team whose significant breakthrough—that water can unexpectedly enhance adhesion under controlled conditions—was published Aug. 7 in Science Advances. The implications of this research are profound, particularly in biomedical applications such as bandages, health monitoring sensors for moist skin, and advanced adhesives that could replace sutures. The insights gained into leveraging surface roughness and material properties could revolutionize industries worth billions of dollars globally.

This is an eerie, ominous look at an abandoned fundamentalist church, Akron Baptist Temple. It was, of course, a church where Bob Jones, Inc. hobnobbed. Bob Jr. helped them ring in the New Year in 1963:

Hey y'all I listed these paintings on ebay recently! I have most of them listed for local pickup due to their size and weight, but the 2 on canvas are listed with shipping options, though the larger one will likely have expensive shipping unfortunately. Buuuuuuttt if you're interested in owning one of these bad boys and you like close to the Akron / Cleveland / Kent (Ohio) area it'd be awesome to actually sell some of these.
I know most of them don't have frames /cradles /hangers on them, but the doors could be installed as actual usable doors and the MDF boards are fairly easy to hang with screws. I made the MDF board paintings at a time when I wasn't feeling the best and was unable to manage making frames for my panels, plus I had a professor that told me I had to buy my own panel making wood, which was untrue. The school is supposed to provide Masonite, you're only supposed to have to purchase the wood for the frame. The only would I could find for making panels at the time was MDF as all the Masonite panels at the local hardware stores were filled with holes :( thus why there's 1/3 inch thick MDF board paintings in my collection of student works.
ANYWAY, I'm willing to drive the ones that fit in my car a pretty good distance to get them out of my closet lol. I'd say max would be an hour and a half to two hours.
Please consider purchasing one of these if you have the means to do so and like my work, it'd mean so much to me.
Here's the link to my Ebay page: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=156244174223&rt=nc&_ssn=hoande_62
Paintings For Sale!!!
Hey! I finally decided it's time to sell the paintings I've done throughout the past few years of school! Prices are negotiable and do not include the cost of shipping. Buyer pays for shipping. I am only able to ship these within the United States. Many of these pieces are large and/or heavy so I can't guarantee the shipping price won't be hefty, but I tried to price these pieces with that fact in mind. Please DM me if you'd like to buy one or have any questions.
"Flower Field" Acrylic on MDF board, 48 x 25 (inches), no frame/cradle and no hanger attached so it's a bit difficult to hang as is - $100
It's a bit heavy because it's MDF board so shipping may be expensive.
"Brighter Colors" Acrylic, Caulk, and Graphite Powder on Hollow Wooden Door, 79.5 x 24 x 1.25 (inches), No hinges or doorknob, no hanger attached, slight damage to top of door - $300
Based on Brighter Colors by Alter-P
"Lanterns Lit" Acrylic on Textured Enameled Door, 80 x 32 x 1.25 (inches), no doorknob, hinges still attached, metal picture hanger attached to back - $300
Based on Lanterns Lit by Son Lux
This door is very heavy so shipping will probably be a lot as well.
"Are You Going To Leave Me?" Acrylic on Masonite Panel, 72 x 36 x 2 (inches) - $300
Based on the song Are You Going To Leave Me? by Big Void feat. Big Al
"Heat Abnormal" Acrylic, Graphite Powder, and Metalic Powder on Hollow Wooden Door, 80 x 30 x 1.25 (inches), No Door Handle, Metal Hinges and Metal Hangers attached, door slightly damaged. - $300
Based on Heat Abnormal by Iyowa
"Scribble Face: I'm Afraid of Doctors" Acrylic, Hot Glue, Chalk Pastels, and Graphite Powder on Canvas, 18 x 24 (inches) - $75
"What it Feels Like to Drown" Acrylic on Canvas, 40 x 40 x 2 (inches) - $200
"On Loop" Acrylic on Masonite Panel, 42 x 42 x 2 (inches) - $200
Based on a playlist of like 20ish songs I had on loop that semester.
"Monster" Acrylic on MDF Board, 49 x 25 (inches), No Frame/Cradle or Hanger attached so it's a bit hard to hang as is. - $125
It's a bit heavy because it's MDF board so shipping price may be high.
Even if you can't or don't want to buy a painting, I'd super appreciate if you would reblog this and spread it so I can get these paintings out of our closet and maybe make some money. It's the first time I'm posting pictures of most of these so I hope you like them~

Chrissie Hynde, 72, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band The Pretenders, posted this photo yesterday and wrote "Here’s me posing outside my childhood home in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio".
Wikipedia "Hynde was born in Akron, the daughter of a part-time secretary and a Yellow Pages manager. She graduated from Firestone High School but stated "I was never too interested in high school.
"I never went on a date or to a dance. It was pretty awful for me. Except, I used to go to Cleveland just to see any band.
" 'I was in love a lot of the time, but mostly with guys in bands I had never met. For me, knowing Brian Jones and later Iggy Pop were out there, made it hard for me to get too interested in the guys around me. I had bigger things in mind.'
"She went on to Kent State University's Art School and was caught up in the Kent State massacre on May 4, 1970, in which the boyfriend of one of her friends was among the four victims. . .
"She then went to London and recollected 'It was great, but my heart was breaking.
"I wanted to be in a band so bad. And to go to all the gigs, to see it so close up, to be living in it and not to have a band was devastating to me. After one addition I was weeping on the Underground throughout London. All the people I knew were in bands, and there I was, the real loser. . .
"In 1979 she formed The Pretenders and their first signature single hit number 1 in the UK on January 19, 1980. Their first album went on to similar chart success worldwide."
Hynde was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

Innovative method uses oxygen and light to recycle unsaturated polymers
A study published in Cell Reports Physical Science showcases a novel method for the recycling of unsaturated polymers such as rubber and plastics. The paper, authored by Dr. Junpeng Wang, assistant professor of polymer science at The University of Akron, and a team of current and former students including Dr. Hanlin Chen '23, Dr. Devavrat Sathe '23, Xin Guan and Puyang Zhang, introduces a process using oxygen and light to help break down the polymers naturally. Since the 1950s, the mass production of plastics has resulted in the creation of approximately 8.3 billion metric tons of polymers. Unfortunately, the majority of these polymers have been discarded or incinerated, leading to significant environmental contamination.

Terry Bowden
Physique: Average Build/Chubby Height: 5'5" (1.65 m)
Terry Wilson Bowden (born February 24, 1956) is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, a position he has held since the 2021 season. Bowden served as the head football coach at Salem University (1983–1985), Samford University (1987–1992), Auburn University (1993–1998), the University of North Alabama (2009–2011), and the University of Akron (2012–2018).
The Douglas, GA native is cute, he caught my attention back in the day when he coached at Auburn but wasn't in my age range. But now that he's older, grayer and packing the pounds on, Terry has become one hot chubby daddy.
Bowden was born into an extremely famous, successful and highly fuckable college football family, and has certainly done his part to add luster and glory to the family name. His father, Bobby Bowden, who I have a major boner for, turned Florida State into a national champion, his brother Tommy Bowden, who I have a major boner for, was the former head coach at Clemson, his brother Jeff Bowden, who I have a major boner for, is also a coach. And the rarely seen Steve Bowden, who… you guest it, I have a boner for. Do I really need to say it? OK all of them can catch one. In a group, individually, in combinations, all of them can catch a HARD ONE.
A member of the winningest family in the history of College Football with a total of 626 wins between himself, his brother Tommy, and his father Bobby; building programs and winning seem to be a part of his DNA. Fitting, since I've definitely spent a lot of DNA on these three. Lets see, he's married with six children and a grandson which puts him into my "loves to fuck theory." Which makes sense because he resigned from Auburn amid a flurry of wild rumors and affair allegations. Now I want to fuck him more.
