I know we all talk about Spirk in Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock but Voyage Home has some of my personal favorite scenes between the two of them.

I love their argument over Italian food, Kirk trying to get Spock to stop swearing, Kirk trying to get Spock to call him by first name again, and I especially love the scene where McCoy goes "He trusts your guess more than most people's facts".

Fuuuuuuuck Search for Spock ok this is gonna be a long one

STARTING THE MOVIE WITH SPOCK'S DEATH SCENE. KIRK SAYING SPOCK IS HIS NOBLER HALF THAT HE HAS LEFT BEHIND. HIM WALKING OFF THE BRIDGE INTO THE LIFT AND HIS FACE IMMEDIATELY FALLING ONCE HE'S ALONE. SAREK AUTOMATICALLY THINKING SPOCKS SOUL WOULD BE WITH KIRK BECAUSE EVEN HE KNOWS HOW MUCH SPOCK CARED FOR AND TRUSTED KIRK. KIRK SAYING SPOCK MEANT MORE TO HIM THAT SAREK WOULD EVER KNOW AND THAT IF HE COULD'VE HE WOULD'VE SACRIFICED HIMSELF INSTEAD. KIRKS BROKEN "NO" AT THE END OF THE MIND MELD. KIRK SAYING THAT SPOCKS SOUL IS AS MUCH HIS RESPONSIBILITY AS HIS OWN WOULD BE. THE MAIN CREW OF THE ENTERPRISE RISKING THEIR LIVES AND CAREERS FOR SPOCK NO QUESTIONS ASKED. KIRK PROTECTING THE UNCONSCIOUS SPOCK IN HIS ARMS. MCCOY SAYING HE MISSED SPOCK AND COULDN'T BARE TO LOSE HIM AGAIN. SAREK ADMITING THAT SPOCK MAKES HIM LOSE HIS LOGIC. SPOCK PAUSING AND TURNING AROUND AS HE LOOKED AT THE FACES OF THE PEOPLE HE CALLED HIS FAMILY.

KIRK LOSING EVERYTHING HE CARED ABOUT, HIS SON HIS SHIP AND HIS CAPTAINCY, ALL FOR A CHANCE THAT SPOCK MIGHT'VE BEEN ABLE TO COME BACK BECAUSE IF HE HADN'T TRIED, "THE COST WOULD'VE BEEN MY SOUL" NOT SPOCKS. HIS.

SPOCK ASKING WHY KIRK CAME BACK AND KIRK SAYING "THE NEEDS OF THE ONE OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE MANY." DIRECTLY PARALLELING SPOCKS DEATH STATEMENT. SPOCK REMEMBERING THAT THE SHIP WAS IN DANGER AND THE LAST THINGS HE SAID TO KIRK.

"I HAVE BEEN AND EVER SHALL BE YOUR FRIEND."!!!!!

"JIM. YOUR NAME IS JIM."!!!!!!!!

Something about Bones and Spock being closer after the Search for Spock. They've been in each other’s heads, Spock stops and looks at Bones who just taps his head before he goes to Jim and remembers who he is.

Spock finds himself lingering around Bones more. There's a comfort to his presence that he can't describe, but it's not entirely illogical. He's the one person he knew between dying and rebirth, he knows his mind almost like his own, it's like childhood blanket or the sun on his face. A warmth.

Bones, too, notices a change. Somethings just seem more Vulcan. Maybe it's just him, or how shocking his, Spock and Jim’s mental bond coming back seems, but he feels what Spock must feel when they ozh'esta. Before, whenever he and Jim did this to Spock, or each other out of habit, they didn’t feel anything directly themselves. Through the bond they could feel the happiness it gave Spock, but never the zing as it happened.

Jim thinks he's jealous for a moment, in the period where Spock’s back but not fully himself, with that naivety he has in the Voyage Home. He fears that maybe he has to come to terms with that fact that his relationship with Spock died that day.

Of course this passes, Spock remembers more and becomes himself again. But his bond with Bones doesn’t fade, Jim appreciates it for what it is and smiles when Spock reaches for Bones in the night, when Bones frowns and Spock does too.

thinking about wrath of khan + search for spock paralleling jim's kobayashi maru. the no-win scenario, because anything that involves spock dying is a no-win scenario. he couldn't touch him. they were separated by glass, spock was in a radiation chamber --- there was a literal, indestructible barrier between them, and jim couldn't have reached him if he tried. but then he tries again and he goes against starfleet orders and cheats death and logic and destroys his ship, his soul, to get the other half of it back: he beats every single odd like he's done countless times and he cheats death itself just to get spock back by a ritual that has scarcely been done for how dangerous it is and, by god, it works. because jim would break every rule and universal constant if it meant maintaining the one that says him and spock find each other in every single universe. he would break every rule and himself if it meant reaching what his life depends on. what his crew's lives depend on. first his command, then his commanding officer. but ultimately, in every scenario, he would place spock first. i need to sit down.

The Voyage Home is the best Star Trek movie ever made. It’s funny. It’s emotional. The plot makes coherent sense. None of the characters act OOC (besides Spock for like 1/2 of it because he’s trying to regain his memories, but once he does, he’s back to being the Spock we love). It doesn’t include any unnecessary romance with a “woman-of-the-week” (I don’t view Gillian as a Kirk romance since they never kissed or anything) nor does it include any unnecessary deaths. It has a good message to care for animals & whales. This is the movie I want every casual Trek fan to see to make them love Star Trek, but it kinda needs 2 other movies worth of buildup!

Spock and Jim share clothes so often that by the time the TOS movies take place (or at least the later ones, like after Search for Spock) they genuinely cannot tell whose clothes are whose.

Well-- theoretically, anyways.

Spock says he doesn't remember, but he does.

Jim has yet to question how his husband, with his nearly perfect Vulcan memory, cannot tell whose clothes belong to who. In reality, Spock just likes seeing Jim wearing his clothes to official meetings and such without realizing it now that they have the same rank-- their uniforms are basically interchangeable at this point. Plus, Spock would never lower himself to the point of purchasing a sweatshirt of his own volition-- unlike his husband, who hasn't seen any of his hoodies since he graduated the academy since Spock has been stealing them for years.

As much as I 100% agree with everyone who argues that we should have gotten more screentime for the women of TOS (Commanders Chapel and Rand) or for Saavik and David, I feel the character who got done dirtiest by the movies was Dr. Marcus.

She was such an interesting character, both in terms of her relation to Kirk and her goals with Project Genesis. She absolutely could have grown and been one of the best TOS era characters ever if given more development in future films, but no. We don't even see her in Search for Spock. The movie where her damn son dies. And she didn't even come back in Undiscovered Country?? The movie where David's death is a pivotal piece of Kirk's character arc??

Apparently she was supposed to appear in Search for Spock, but they snipped her out of the movie seemingly for budget cuts, and because she was "extraneous" which feels like such a shitty thing to do to the character, in a movie with a plotline set on Genesis (which she created) that features the death of her son. Her actress, Bibi Besch apparently was very disappointed that we never got any sort of closure with Marcus, and she's damn right! Apparently she was supposed to be in Generations but was cut out because... idk we can't have nice things?? (Also not the movie's fault, but the fact she passed on only two years after being cut from Generations feels so unfair to Besch. Rest in peace.) Also nobody bring up Into Darkness. I haven't seen it, but I already know they did her real dirty in that one.
