Discovery Thoughts

I am personally devastated that it's Disco's last season... But!

It will always hold a special place in my heart.

I spent a few years avoiding it and watching TNG reruns on the BBC instead (because of the paywall) but then I decided that life is too short not to watch every Star Trek there is - I'm still working my way through the movies - and I subscribed.

And for a while, it was epic. Then Prodigy was cancelled, and axed from the network entirely. And then it was Discovery's and Lower Deck's turn.

And at least we'll still have Strange New Worlds. We need to be grateful for that, and for the fact that Star Trek exists at all. I couldn't - no - I wouldn't want to - imagine a world where Star Trek in all its myriad forms didn't exist.

And then there's fanfiction, both to be written and to be read. It's truly wonderful.

Even Discovery is coming to its curtain call, it'll always live on in our hearts. The haters are always going to be lurking out there, but what Trek wasn't without its faults? Nothing is perfect. But to me, Trek is the one thing that comes closest.

one of the best tips for Real Life that I’ve ever picked up is to always highball your estimate whenever someone asks you “when can you get this done by” by about 25% (if you can get away with it). that way, if it ends up being harder than you thought, you’ve got extra time to figure things out and if you were right about how much time it takes then you get to look like an absolute genius instead of just a simply competent person.

what you may not have realized is that I learned this crucial piece of life advice from an episode of Star Trek where Scotty is telling Geordi that whenever he told Kirk something on the Enterprise was at full capacity, it was always only ever a notch or so below full capacity so that Scotty looked like the god of all engineers when he was able to magically hack the warp drive to run a little beyond what he’d told everyone else was “full capacity” and honestly that one throwaway gag from Star Trek has changed my life.

i wish the star trek medical instruments were real i would love to sit on a bed that shows my doctor how much pain im in and then they scan me with a little blinky device that makes a funny noise and know exactly whats wrong with me and then give me a pill that makes me regrow a kidney or whatever the fuck

other tenants of the building include: -Picard (the head of the college that Data attends) and Q (no one really knows what he does, he just pops in and out whenever he pleases) -Troi (high school guidance counselor) and Riker (personal trainer) and Worf used to live here too but he moved out -Beverly (still a doctor) and Wesley (burnt out college freshman) -Barclay (works at Blockbusters w/ Data and Geordi) -Guinan (bartender of a secretly gay bar)

10/10 funniest Spock moment is when he accidentally tells everyone he went blind bc he forgot he has an extra set of eyelids.

he ACTUALLY thought that HE, himself, was permanently blinded before going, 20 minutes later, “OH FUCK! I can see again”

normally that’s something Spock would do just to fuck with everyone but this time he also had his ass handed to him because he couldn’t remember HIS OWN NUMBER OF EYELIDS

best Vulcan ever. I know Starfleet is still telling stories about him to this day

Just got back from therapy where I was like “I think I’m in another manic phase bc despite all the dread I have about my Responsibilities, I just cannot stop thinking about these gay men from Star Trek”

And my therapist looked at me, debated, and then essentially was lik “… do these responsibilities need to get done right now? …No? Then obsess over those gay men!!!!”

im so jealous of people who have special interests that are facts based. like how am i supposed to communicate to people that my special interest isnt star trek the tv show its star trek the story. the characters. the themes and motifs.

people ask me stuff about the lore or the production and im like nah nah nah. idk any of that stuff. but i could spend 30 minutes analysing the scene in corbomite manouver where spock says "im s-" and what implications that has for his character and his relationship with jim.

i dont know how a mind meld works or what powers a phaser but i could write you an essay on the themes of found family in star trek v, including the significance of row row row your boat in the cyclical narrative.

"how does a transporter work" fuck if i know. can i tell you about 'good luck spock'???
