Wicked
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2025
Wicked (2024, USA)
Director: Jon M. Chu
Writers: Winnie Holzman & Dana Fox (based on the musical by Stephen Schwartz & Winnie Holzman and the novel by Gregory Maguire)
Mini-review:
Few things give me the high of a super hyped-up movie that actually delivers: Wicked is just as great as everyone keeps saying. Tbh, I went in knowing next to nothing, cause this particular musical never made it to my country, afaik. I'm obviously acquainted with The Wizard of Oz, but that's about it. And what I found here was almost three hours of pure magic and unforgettable songs. The entire cast smashes it out of the park in every way: acting, singing and dancing. The sets are absolutely stunning, too; it's arguably the best production design I've seen recently. However, I do think the cinematography and lighting leave much to be desired; at points it looks like a run-of-the-mill Marvel movie. But still, everything else is exceptional enough for that detail not to bring the film down at all. I'll definitely be looking forward to part two!

The National Theatres new production of OScar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" looks set to be one hell of a show!
We have Ncuti Gatwa as Algernon, Hugh Skinner as Jack, Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́ as Gwendolen and Eliza Scanlen as Cecily.
We also have the the legend who is Sharon D Clarke as Lady Bracknell.
Previews suggest that the OTT approach taken, especially in the realtionship between Algernon and Jack, is a bit TOO knowing, and rather dilute the incredibly daring subversion Wilde was writing, and it sort of leaves Cecily and Gwendolen to one side, which is a shame.
However there seems to be universal agreement that the leads are magnetic as hell and Clarke is a magnificent Lady Bracknell.
And the costume department must have had an absolute BALL with this production!
And it's going to be screened in UK cinema's too!

BTS of #RWRBMovie: Sharon D. Clarke
ML via What to Watch:
"And then Sharon, I honestly was just like — when I knew I get to cast a fictional UK prime minister, I was like ‘well, let’s go for the most hopeful version of what we’d love to see in a prime minister’, and when they asked me to think about it, I was like ‘oh! Sharon D Clarke — ask her if she’d come in and do a day for us’. It’s the same thing with Sharon as with Uma, the first thing I said for each of the President and the Prime Minister was ‘would you vote for that actor to actually do that job?’ I can’t vote in the UK, but if I could, I would vote for Sharon!”

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility!”

More Numberblocks/TAG observations
Some of you might remember when I got a bit excited that Rasmus Hardiker voiced 18 in Numberblocks, who is a super speedy super rectangle. Teresa Gallagher (Eos) is also several characters.
Today we had more Numberblocks on the telly and I thought 100 sounded familiar. 100 is Sharon D. Clarke, who voices Cass McCready. I'm starting to think the whole cast might be a copy.
I am also definitely feeling a Numberbocks/TAG crossover coming on somehow, but it currently has no plot and I can't write until after some building work so maybe not 😂

Collider's Exclusive Interview with Andrew Gower
Collider did a wonderful interview with Andrew Gower in which he got to talk about Gustaffson and their newest release “Flowers” but also his past and present acting work. “Flowers” is also first time Gustaffson collaborated with composer Bear McCreary who Andrew met back in 2015 when he played Bonnie Prince Charlie on Outlander. He’d seen a live version of “Flowers” that we recorded at St.…

Inspector Ellis comes to Acorn TV in November
Inspector Ellis comes to Acorn TV in November
Another month and another new crime show (and probably many more if I look for them). November 4, Acorn TV brings us Inspector Ellis, starring Sharon D Clarke. My assumption is it will be on U sometime in 2025, and I will catch it then. There’s a trailer and a summary — it’s definitely not cosy crime: DCI Ellis (Sharon D Clarke) is a formidable cop who takes over the most challenging unsolved…
