I also think- and this may be in part because I grew up watching him play Tim in The Office - that Martin Freeman somehow, looks chronically 'normal'. And witty and decent. But he can't help looking normal, and the wardrobe they gave him in BBC Sherlock particularly screams 'non-threatening'. So he can say or do virtually anything and we subconsciously just think "bloke".

It also seems reasonable to speculate that Benedict Cumberbatch somehow objectively looks chronically posh/rich and intelligent and a bit of a weirdo. And, despite looking warm and kind whe he's even slightly animated, his resting bitch face can appear arrogant and mean. I have no intention of rewatching Brexit: An Uncivil War in which he played Dominic Cummings to see my theory hold though! Ewww.

Really though, I get that typecasting is real and like them both a lot. And think they're both objectively very handome! ;-)
