Study Group
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2025
Study Group (2025, South Korea)
Directors: Lee Jang Hun & Yoo Beom Sang
Writers: Um Sun Ho & Oh Bo Hyun (based on the webtoon by Shin Hyung Wook)
Mini-review:
I've been watching this as it aired and it's been the breather I needed every week. Some people might be thrown off by the over the top, cartoonish style of the show, but that's exactly what makes it so unabashedly fun. It's basically like watching a shonen manga come to life (or in this case, an action webtoon). The fight scenes, especially those in the first and last episodes, showcase stunning choreography and effects, the likes you don't usually see in K-dramas. And the cast more than lives up to the demands of the show, in terms of both acting and physicality. It feels like Study Group leaves the door pretty open for more seasons, so if that ends up happening, they can count me right in.

I Am Married...But!
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2025
I Am Married...But! (2025, Taiwan)
Director & Writer: Li Nien Hsiu
Mini-review:
What a pleasant surprise! I should have expected great things from a drama with this cast, but it caught me off guard just how good it is. For starters, it made me laugh so much, especially during the first half; I can't quite remember the last time I came across such a hilarious drama. Its sense of humor is a perfect showcase for Alice Ko and Jasper Liu's comedic skills. And to top it all off, the show's dramatic moments hit the spot just as well. It's almost hard to believe that I Am Married... But! is basically Li Nien Hsiu's debut as director and screenwriter. I'll be looking forward to seeing her future works, for sure.

Melo Movie
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2025
Melo Movie (2025, South Korea)
Director: Oh Chung Hwan
Writer: Lee Na Eun
Mini-review:
I loved Our Beloved Summer back in the day, so I was really looking forward to seeing the writer work with such an exciting cast and director. And, somewhat surprisingly, I think Melo Movie struck even more of a chord with me. It's true that Lee Na Eun rehashes a lot of the ideas that made OBS so popular, but she continues to prove herself as an impressively insightful and sensitive writer. In particular, I deeply connected with her approach to grief. The shorter length means that the story can avoid unnecessary dragging, so it never has a chance to get boring. Also, the two couples showcase different but equally interesting dynamics, all of it aided by a superb cast. And, of course, Oh Chung Hwan's works are always visually pleasant and engaging. All in all, this drama knows how to execute its familiar elements to perfection.
P.S. I'm obsessed with the song Taehyun and Huening Kai of TXT made for the soundtrack 💙💙💙

The Paradise of Thorns
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2025
The Paradise of Thorns (2024, Thailand)
Director: Boss Kuno
Writers: Boss Kuno, Naron Cherdsoongnern & Karakade Norasethaporn
Mini-review:
I hadn't even heard of this movie before today, but damn, that was one crazy ride. The story throws a heartbreaking twist at you almost right away, and then descends into this messy, soapy chaos that's supremely enjoyable. (Things get pretty dark, especially during the final act, so better check out some content warnings). Tbh, I wonder if the movie would work as well without the fantastic cast that breathes life into these characters; Jeff Satur, Engfa Waraha and Srida Puapimol turn in truly unforgettable performances. The cinematography is beautiful too, and the main set is perfectly designed, giving off a lived-in vibe. I feel like The Paradise of Thorns might be too much for some people, but I can say it was right up my alley.

Just rewatched The Vast of Night and it's as impressive as ever. Ingenious setup, fantastic execution and awe-inspiring acting. IMHO one of the best sci-fi movies of the 21st century.

Faceless
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2025
Faceless (2024, Japan)
Director: Michihito Fujii
Writers: Kazuhisa Kodera & Michihito Fujii (based on the novel by Tamehito Somei)
Mini-review:
I'm always up for a new Michihito Fujii film, and this one has a pretty stacked cast, so I knew I had to watch it. I can't say it's my favorite work of his, but it was still enjoyable. While I wish it had delved deeper into the social issues it tries to portray, the main character is interesting enough, mostly thanks to Ryusei Yokohama's strong performance. As for the rest of the characters, they probably would've been better off in a miniseries or something like that, even if the cast tries its best. Faceless won't be making my favorite movies list, but it's still a solidly made and entertaining crime thriller.

All the Long Nights
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2025
All the Long Nights (2024, Japan)
Director: Sho Miyake
Writers: Kiyoto Wada & Sho Miyake (based on the novel by Maiko Seo)
Mini-review:
I've been hearing a lot of praise for this movie, and now I can understand where it's coming from. It gives visibility to two disorders that barely get any representation (premenstrual syndrome and panic disorder), but it never falls into melodrama. Instead, it focuses on the strange but endearing friendship that grows between the two leads. Mone Kamishiraishi and Hokuto Matsumura share sweet chemistry, and their performances are up to the task this story offers. The film is very low-key, so some people might feel like nothing happens, but the sensitive writing and the beautiful cinematography make All the Long Nights more than worth a watch.

fun thing about herding and/or generally neurotic breeds: they are really good at following rules you have instituted, but they will also make their own Dog Rules they will follow stringently whether or not you like it
