I finally got the first volume of Chihayafuru in Italian!

Inside, you could find two cards with poem 11 and poem 14 respectively.

Poem 11

That I have rowed out

over the broad sea plain,

towards the innumerable isles,

please tell that to my beloved,

you fishing boats of the sea-folk.

Ono no Takamura 小野篁 (802-853) was exiled to the Oki Islands. The "person" (hito ni wa) to whom the message of the poet about his having left in exile has to be given, has been a matter of speculation. Some believe this to have been the poet's aged mother, taking the poem in the Confucian sense of filial piety, but more popular is the idea that it refers to a woman at court with whom Takamura had an affair.

Two years later he was allowed to return to Heiankyo and he eventually reached the court position of imperial adviser (sangi). This is the reason why he is named Sangi Takamura on the cards.

Poem 14

that my heart is as tangled,

as the shinobu stencil patterns

of cloth from the distant north,

is not my fault,

but only because of you!

The tangle-patterned prints of Shinobu from the far north" are symbolic for a heart moved by love - just as the prints were pressed on textiles, so the heart of the poet has been imprinted with feelings of love; and just as the prints are tangle-patterned, so his heart is confused (or wild).

The poet is Minamoto no Toru (822-95), the luxury-loving son of Emperor Saga, who had been made a commoner with the family name "Minamoto" (or Genji), just like the fictional Genji in the Genji Monogatari.

He became an official of the highest rank and was known as "the Riverbank Minister of the Left" (Kawara no Sa Daijin).
