We are slowly working our way back through season 1 of The Sandman. Since we saw that season 2 is well underway, we thought taking our time to revisit the episodes would be a good idea. For this podcast then we reflect on A Hope in Hell, 24/7 and The Sound of Her Wings.

Distance

Liam knew there was a distance growing between him and Isaac multiple times before Isaac moved. He just didn't expect it to get as bad as it did.

"Hey, Izzy wanna play Stramash* with Jordan and I?" Liam asks one day after their father died.

"I can't Li, I'm busy… sorry." Isaac responds.

"It’s alright! We'll just play with mama or dad." Liam says, "Next time though, right?" he adds, Isaac feels a slight tug on his chest.

"Yeah. Next time…" he answers.

Liam notices that he didn’t hear Isaac’s bedroom door open all night.

Next time never happened.

Another day, Liam wanted to show Isaac a story from one of his books, so he went to Isaac’s room. He wasn't there, so Liam went downstairs thinking he was in the living room or the kitchen.

When Liam couldn't find Isaac, he went into his mama’s office.

"Liam, what are you doing mo chridhe?**" Jenna asks, looking at her youngest.

"Have you seen Iz? I want to show him something, but I can't find him." Liam responds.

"I believe he went out with his friends Erica and Boyd." Jenna answers.

"Oh…" Liam says quietly, "I'll go back to reading my book then." he adds, trying not to cry.

"What's the book about, dear?" Jenna asks sweetly.

"The dancing plague of 1518." Liam answers bluntly before leaving the room.

He reads the rest of his book in Isaac’s room that night. He has a nightmare of a snake-like monster slashing Isaac across his torso and Isaac getting paralyzed when he falls asleep.

It happens again a week later…

"Hey, Iz…" Liam starts, knowing what’s most likely going to happen.

"Yeah, Liam?" Isaac questions softly.

"Wanna go stargazing with Mama, dad, and I? They say Saturn will be visible and that there's going to be a lunar eclipse…" Liam asks, moving from the balls of his feet to his tip toes multiple times.

"Can't, sorry… next time, though. Okay?" Isaac responds, looking guiltily at his baby brother.

"Yeah, I guess…" Liam says, looking sadly at the floor. "You're still coming to my game tomorrow night, right?" Liam wonders.

"Of course. I wouldn't miss it for the world." Isaac answers, smiling sadly, but Liam doesn't see it because he's still staring at his feet.

Liam goes downstairs to see his parents and his dog waiting by the door.

"Where’s your brother, Liam?" David asks, concerned.

"He can't make it… he'll try to next time, though!" Liam answers, putting Cernunnos on his leash and walking out the door.

While they're walking towards the small field Liam and his brothers would play in when they were younger, Cernunnos slips out of his collar, forcing Liam to run after him.

"Liam, dear, let him go. He'll come back soon. And if he doesn't, we know our way around here, we'll find him." Jenna shouts after her youngest. Liam hangs his head and walks back to his parents.

3rd person, Isaac

Scott, Isaac, and Derek are chasing Deucalion through the trees surrounding them when Isaac hears a familiar accent and barking in the direction Deucalion is running toward.

Shit! he thinks, stopping in his tracks as he hears Deucalion say: "Well, hello there, little pup. What's your name?" he starts to run again, faster than he was before, concerning Scott and Derek.

He catches up to Deucalion but makes sure that no one outside of the treeline can see him.

"Give me the dog." Issac says, making Deucalion quirk an eyebrow.

"And why should I?" Deucalion asks, "I can sense its owners are nearby. I thought I should bring it to them…" he continues before Cernunnos barks at Isaac.

"You do that, but afterwar-" Isaac starts.

"Yes, I know, afterward I'm going to be chased again." Deucalion says, straightening his cane and walking towards Isaac’s family.

3rd person, Liam

"Hello? Is anyone over here?" a voice yells from behind the treeline.

"Cernunnos!" Liam shouts, "How did you find him?" he asks the man in front of him.

"Little guy just came right up to me, I almost hit the troublemaker with my cane." Deucalion responds and Liam giggles, "Well, I have to go… I'll see you around." he adds, ruffling Cernunnos' fur before turning back to the woods before he walks off into the trees.

Liam feels a little less alone in this world when he sees that same man again a week later.

The last time it happens is the night Isaac left for France.

"Hey, wanna come with me to take Cernunnos on a walk? We can look at the stars…" Liam asks, and Isaac doesn't even answer. He just shrugs.

Liam didn't know what was happening to his brother, but he wanted to help.

"Or we could watch The Princess Bride…" Liam suggests, knowing how much Isaac loves it. Once again, silence. "Or play a game? Or make a cake? Or help Nan make Jordan a gift for his upcoming birthday?" Liam says, hoping to get an answer. Nothing.

"Are you okay, bub?" Liam asks, "You've been acting weird lately." he adds, with concern on his face.

"I'm fine… I'm just tired." Isaac says.

Liar. Liam thinks, but he doesn't say it out loud.

They had gone out the night before for dinner with Jordan, just the three of them, but Isaac had been quiet almost the whole time

The next morning, Liam had woken up to see a note on his desk, and Isaac not in his bed.

The note said:

I'm sorry, Li, I had to leave. I know I said we would go together, but I can't stay in this town a minute longer. I hope you can forgive me for leaving and for pushing you away over this last year. I know it will take some time, but I would like to talk with you like we used to when we were younger. So whenever you can find time to do so, call me, please. I love you, bub

So I’ve been staring at all of this for a while, and trying to make sense of it, which I probably shouldn’t 🤣

In lieu of a completely new subplot: Is this potentially what I think it could be? The massive lights for (presumably) outside shots? They’re all wearing black (could of course just be a change for Cori 2.0, but Jenna is dressed all black, too, like in the previous leaks, and that’s modern Johanna)?

Are we already filming The Wake, too? 🧐😩
