Mountain Neighborhood by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A plane window view looking over the Yukon Territory in Canada (based on the flight information on the seat back) while on a flight out of Anchorage to Minneapolis. What drew me into this image was initially the warmth of sunlight across the snowcapped peaks. I decided to pull back on the focal length and include more of the Yukon landscape that I was watching from my plane window view. I could angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to capture a more sweeping view across the mountain present.

I was reading about end to end cycling and looked up Chile

From Arica to villa O'higgins (the end of carretera austral) aprox 5000km (thats using the main road which bikes usually dont)

And about two weeks

To punta arenas

(the southermost city)

Is a bit complicated cause theres basically no roads

So it can be done off road, which should be possible in a mtb,

Or via ferry but that isnt very sporty,

Or via argentina which adds aprox 1500 kms, and doesnt have great views tbh

Any way itll take at least an extra week

So

Arica to Punta Arenas

At least

6500 km

Three weeks is a v conservative estimate

considering constant riding (about 250 km a day,which would mean about 10-15 hrs)

and stopping only to sleep and bodily functions

But people on cars doing carretera austral often take at least two weeks and thats only 1200km

I decided to zoom into this one portion and use a technique I came across a few years ago from a DPS article on the “impact of less.” The idea is to focus on a portion of an area and then let the mind imagine more beyond the image.

I've caved. Here's my Avatar The Last Airbender uni au and modern/non bender au headcanons.

Here's what I think the main kids uni majors/minors would be:

Aang: wildlife conservation with a minor in political sciences

Katara: medicine, education minor

Sokka: engineering, polisci minor

Toph: geology with a martial arts minor (changed my mind, education minor)

Zuko: forced to do law & politics by his family but switches to history/anthropology, keeping politics as a minor

Azula: law w a psychology minor

Mai: forced to do politics by family but wants to do art, history minor

Ty Lee: training in acrobatics and performance at a performing arts school and works at the circus

Suki: human relations and activism, martial arts minor

Yue: Dance major (same school as Ty Lee, polisci minor

Living situations:

Katara and Sokka flat together and eventually Aang becomes a permanent resident

Toph lives right across from them, she likes her own space and independence but she'd never want to be too far from her friends

Zuko lives with Iroh above his teashop and works there part time

Suki has a sharehouse with the kyoshi warriors (her hockey team)

Ty Lee and Yue get assigned room-mates first year and became pretty quick friends, they continue to live together afterwards

Azula has her own apartment (of course). So does Mai, but she spends so much time at Azulas she basically lives there. Neither of them would admit it but they much prefer it to having whole houses to themselves.

Have not decided where the uni would be but probably BSSU (Ba Sing Se uni) cause I know a lot of ppl use that as the uni name

I don't know a ton about US and Canadian geography so if y'all have ideas for what states or provinces the characters would hail from (especially what state/city Zuko, Azula, Mai and Ty Lee grew up in) I would def appreciate the suggestions

Aang has a Tibetan Mastiff called Appa and Sokka has a Siamese cat called Momo (he found him behind a dumpster looking for food scraps and Sokka knew he'd found a kindred spirit,,, much to Kataras initial dismay)

Aang grew up in a sort of hippie/alternative living foster home that taughtbuddist beliefs, he never knew his real parents but he was okay with that.

I'm a fan of bigcorp ceo Ozai but also political tyrant Ozai works as well so I'm srsly torn on that. Politician Ozai would either have to be a nation ruler or American ambassador because I like to think Zuko and Azula moved around a lot as kids so he couldn't have a job that keeps him in ine place. That's why I like the idea of ceo Ozai. He would still have a lot of political power and it would still mean moving around a lot plus him being super corrupt and exploiting his workers is fun for angst.

Oh and!! Zuko and Azula lived in Singapore for part of highschool and their family visited a lot for holidays. Since Tophs parents and Ozai worked together, Zuko and Azula were around at The Beifongs a lot and entertained themselves by making fun of Toph for hanging out with a "poor tree hugging commoner" like Aang

Yes yes yes! With many animals, the females are more impressively large or more colorful than the males. Let's have a look at some impressive and amazing females...

(Southern) Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus), female, family Boidae, Ecuador

With many snakes, the females get to be much larger than the males. Female Anacondas grow to be the heaviest snakes in the world, as up to 97.5 kg (214 lb 15 oz).

Though reports have claimed that Green Anacondas can grow up to over 30 ft long, the longest ever ACTUALLY measured was about 19 ft. long.

Brahminy Blindsnake aka Flowerpot Snake (Indotyphlops braminus), family Typhlopidae, found in tropical and subtropical areas around the world

This snake is native to somewhere along the Indian Ocean, possibly somewhere in SE Asia or coastal Africa.

The fossorial (burrowing) snake feeds mainly on the larvae, pupae, and eggs of ants and termites.

All known specimens of this snake have been female. They reproduce through parthenogenesis (asexually).

Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius), female, family Scolopacidae, order Charadriiformes, near Barrow, Alaska, USA

Female Phalaropes are larger and more colorful than the males. They court the males and defend the nest site. The males incubate the eggs, and raise the chicks.

Sonoran Spotted Whiptail (Aspidoscelis sonorae), females, family Teiidae, Arizona

This is another all female parthenogentic species.

There are other closely relates species, other whiptails and racerunners, that are also all female populations. Some of them are completely parthenogenic, and some combine parthenogenesis with sexual input from closely related species or populations nearby.

Asian Yellow-spotted Climbing Toad (Rentapia hosii), females, family Bufonidae, found in SE Asia

The females of this species are large, gorgeous, ornate frogs, while the males are much smaller and much less colorful.

LIBRARY HAUL

This time I went to my local branch of the NYPL, instead of the central one in midtown. It's not a bad library per se, just very small. I was planning on picking up something to do with learning Russian, but there was nothing Russian-related on the languages shelf. So, I cut my losses with that and tried for a well rounded selection anyways.

For me, one of the great things about the library is being able to borrow huge $50 coffee table books full of glossy photography, like the book listed first, P&F:TDVE. I've found in the past that books like that make for a relaxing read on a Sunday morning, a better way to start the day than news or whatever.

First time in a while that I have neither a manga nor a cookbook on the list, nor a newspaper. First time including a CD or a sports themed book.

As always, I encourage you (I am speaking into your ear) to get yourself a library card and borrow as big a stack as you can possibly carry, and then some. Throw your back out. Go absolutely nuts. Go black-card crazy. Go "scholar prince who suspects the eunuchs are plotting against him and needs to find the secrets of immortality" crazy
