A Connection to Our Wilder Selves (Katmai National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I captured this image at the Falls Platform with a view looking to the northeast at Brooks Falls while observing a brown bear in Katmai National Park. The image is of a male brown bear on top of the Falls waiting for salmon to make the jump and attempt to catch it to eat. I pulled back on the focal length to capture more of the surrounding waterfall.

Mountain Neighborhood by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A plane window view looking over the Yukon Territory in Canada (based on the flight information on the seat back) while on a flight out of Anchorage to Minneapolis. What drew me into this image was initially the warmth of sunlight across the snowcapped peaks. I decided to pull back on the focal length and include more of the Yukon landscape that I was watching from my plane window view. I could angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to capture a more sweeping view across the mountain present.

In case anyone is wondering, here's what I use and the gear in my workflow:
Capture:
Cameras: Nikon D500, Nikon Z7 ii, Nikon D800E (rip)– looking to get whatever succeeds the D500 and/or the next ultra-high res body (hopefully 60mp+); Tablet: Wacom 16 Cintiq
Presentation:
Monitors: Asus ProArt 328C, Asus ProArt 328Q
Edit:
Stills: Capture One, Video: Adobe Premiere, Screenshots/Other: Paint.Net, Adobe Illustrator
Preprint:
Photo Prints: Adobe Photoshop, Graphic Prints: Adobe InDesign
Print:
Epson Surecolor P800 (looking at buying a P5000 (speed) or P900 (color upgrade) soon)
Paper: Canson Infinity Platine Fibre Rag, Epson Ultra Premium Lustre
~
Starting out, I used to be solely on Paint.Net and Nikon Capture NX, but exporting and editing TIFFs from NEFs was so painfully slow I eventually had to get Capture One just to be able to keep up. The first time I opened Capture One and it did 2,400 previews in 90s with hardware acceleration (on my old geforce 1060), I was sold.
Everything else after that kind-of snowballed. Almost all my hardware and lenses were bought used/refurbished from ebay, craigslist, and FB marketplace (vetted by private group, open listings are garbage). The only mandatory recurring expenses are the Adobe suite and Capture One.

Aperture Ring Markings for Nikon 85mm F/1.4 AF-D lens
I recently got my hands on a Nikon 85mm lens for a really great price. The seller clearly stated that the paint for the aperture markings are mostly missing, but I didn’t think it would be a big deal. I thought that 1. I will be shooting it on an F5 or D800E, and the aperture markings aren’t needed for those cameras; and 2. I could always fill them in with paint later. However, when I got home, I…

The Official Field Greeter to Katmai National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: this is chunk (bear 32.) he was the first bear seen when they turned on the explore.org bear cams the other day at brooks falls in katmai. this pic was taken that day. I have been checking the cams constantly since they were turned on and was lucky enough to see chunk and I was surprised how fat he is already and how good he looks, bear force one ( 747 ) has also been seen in the last week before the cams were tuned on and reportedly looks great. the salmon have not yet begun to run so the bears are scarce so far but keep checking because once the salmon appear so will lots of bears and it will happen soon and quickly. I will post a link to the bear cams ~ johnny

Things That I Dream Of by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view looking across snowcapped mountain peaks of the Yukon area while flying over Canada on a flight from Anchorage to Minneapolis. I decided to zoom into this one portion and use a technique I came across a few years ago from a DPS article on the “impact of less.” The idea is to focus on a portion of an area and then let the mind imagine more beyond the image.

WK 3 - In class - Nikon D3100 + Nikon D800E
To practice photography we were given the chance to try out an expensive camera the Nikon D800E. As I took turns learning how to use the camera I also got a chance to try out my classmates camera Nikon D3100 a smaller more portable camera. When using both cameras that I was unfamiliar with it was interesting to notice that both Nikon cameras are more vibrant in colour in terms of the greens compared to the Canon camera that I use. When shooting with my classmates camera there was a setting that gave the images a soft haze in the images almost a slight euphoric feeling. Switching to the Nikon D800E I felt the massive weight change as this camera had a larger body and lens that added extra weight. Because the Nikon D800E is a full frame camera I was able to capture more in an image this also meant that the files would be larger. The lens that was used was also able to zoom close to the the subject and with the lens hood on it prevented lens flare capturing the colours and creating a stronger contrast.
