owen skyline — son of ares.

owen was adopted by the skylines when he was six & that’s when they changed his last name. he doesn’t even remember what his original surname was. to him, it doesn’t matter as he is a skyline through and though.

owen is a son of ares who mills met while in foster care. neither of them knew that the other was a demigod, much less that their parents were opposites.

the skylines did eventually adopt mills, but not after quite a few roadbumps on both of their parts.

mills ran away after they first tried asking him if they could adopt him. it took coaxing from his social worker to bring him back.

the skylines had to dig deeper into mills’s trauma as to why he didn’t know if he could do permanent.

owen had to get anger management as even if he was calm around mills, he still wanted to make sure that he knew what to do if he ever got mad at his mills.

owen has anger issues—a shit ton—but he forces himself to calm down for mills. he knows that the boy is fragile. he knows that mills has been through a lot in his life.

ever since finding out that mills is a demigod, owen has become a lot nicer to the other unclaimed kids–they are in pain from not knowing. he even went as far as to get mills a spot in the ares cabin so he could be around family.

orion & coping mechanisms.

orion blocks things out. he will refute things, even if said refusal contradicts things he has said before. also: anger. lots of anger. do not point out his contradictions or something that proves him wrong. he will throw hands.

jakke's magic is based on both language and physical movement. there is almost always both a spoken aspect & a gestural aspect to any spell he has. an easy example to give is his teleportation spell—he says the words & then takes a step. by the time his foot hits the ground, he's in the new location.

the reason remy was ousted from the legion once his parentage was revealed isn't just that he is a greek demigod. it was the fear that his grandmother wasn't as roman as was implied. nemesis is just nemesis, the romans keeping her original name. and if his grandmother was greek… then they had a greek demigod as a centurion for years.

it was less "remy is greek ew" and more "oh fuck the greeks aren't awful???" it's why lilith didn't fight for remy to stay. her loyalty to family was overruled by the fear of what the legion—the only home she had ever truly known—would do to her if they decided her record no longer outweighed the idea that she might be a greek demigod.

tris really has no idea how thick his accent is. people talk about how thick it is all the time, but he thinks he sounds perfectly american because of how long he lived in the united states.

jace's mortal family

first up—they’re blended & multi-racial! they’ve got irish, latine, italian, black, & korean. their family portraits look like seven random people if one doesn’t look close. school pickups were a nightmare.

second up—they’re from roswell. conspiracy theory central. none of them are truthers, but i feel that it’s important to note that they are from new mexico. the first time any of them experienced a real winter was a sight to behold.

let’s start with the matriarchs, catalina doe & alessandra valencia.

catalina is a black woman who, despite what her surname may suggest, was not abandoned. her family just has an unfortunate name. she is a graphic designer. alessandra is latina & italian. she is an elementary school secretary. the two met one jace’s first day of kindergarten & later married.

bennett kerrigan is alessandra’s ex-boyfriend.

the two were never married, but were together all throughout high school and college. he is the father of her two bio children. the two broke up amicably after realizing that they weren’t the people they were when they fell in love. bennett helped raise the girls, not one to abandon family. however, upon alessandra & catalina’s marrige, he revoked his own parental rights, giving them to catalina. this doesn’t mean he isn’t around! he has father-daughter days and is always available (even to jace & eun). he only gave up legal parental rights, not moral ones.

the eldest & younger middle children are alessandra’s from her relationship with bennett.

the elder is mia kerrigan. she is three years older than jace. she works as a family attorney. mia feels that she brings an understanding to clients, especially clients with kids, due to her background. the younger middle is alessandra’s second daughter, maeve kerrigan. maeve is four years younger than her sister. she works as a reporter, doing both op-eds and research pieces. her career started before high school even ended, as she worked for her school newspaper. the local paper saw the articles she wrote and offered a job directly after graduation.

the older middle is jace valencia himself!

he is the son of catalina & the god mercury from their short relationship. while he did have catalina’s last name for a while, when alessandra offered adoption so custody would be secure should something happen, he asked to take her name as his own. catalina loved that her son adored his second mother enough to do it and alessandra was honored. no hard feelings about the name change exist between mother and son.

the youngest child is eun doe.

unlike the other three, eun isn’t biologically related to either wife. he was adopted from the system at twelve, changing his last name. he took catalina’s to contrast against jace having alessandra’s & the girls having their father’s. eun is a community college student.

now let’s talk extended family. there’s really only one worth mentioning—rachele valencia. also known as “nonna.”

alessandra’s mother, a widow who moved from her native santa fe to roswell to be closer to her daughter, her only living relative. rachele is in her golden years and knows she doesn’t have much longer left, so she spends her days trying to pass her culture to her grandchildren. she enjoys the blending of it with their own, especially when it comes to food.

he despises the name given to him at birth. he associates it so heavily with his life before camp that it hurts to be called gabriel. however, siblings he is close to can get away with calling him "gabbie." yes, it's closer to being a nickname for gabrielle / gabriella, which is exactly why "gabbie" is fine while "gabe" is a definite no.

rhis contains her power. she does not showcase herself being as powerful as she could be. she only shows her shadow travel and umbrakinesis, but there is more to her than that.

her father's name means "gloom." just being around her invokes feelings of discomfort and gloominess. she makes others feel like the sky is closing in, that the night will never end (considering her divine stepmother is nyx, protogenos of the night, maybe it won't).

her father is one with tartaus, giving her some control over the rate at which monsters regenerate. she is a child of the pit, same as monsters, susceptible to the same rules of immortality.*

he is also one of the first beings. erebus is either second or third—the asexually reproduced son of chaos. he is the entirety of the underworld, the husband of night. rhis has this strength in her veins. combine that with the strength of being a hunter and years of practice? yeah, rhis may look like a dainty princess, but she could throw a bus.

as she is a demi-protogenos, rhis's divine aura is more intense than a demigod or demititan. others quake in her presence, wondering if a god is nearby. her sisters in arms are slightly immune as the hunters spend so much time together, as well as a lot of time with an actual goddess.

her mastery of her umbrakinesis came easily. she needed no practice. her mastery of shadow travel was quick-gained.

*even after joining the hunters, rhis has immortality in the form of regeneration in her father's domain. upon her first death she will regenerate before heading back to the mortal realm. however, she will lose her humanity more & more as she dies & is reborn.

jakke's accent is a mess.

it's mostly london english. that's where he spent his formative years & where he currently lives.

but those formative years were also filled with pedro's mexican accent & myra's slovakian one. he'll roll his 'r's sometimes. he'll clip a word on occasion. spanish & slovak words jump into his vocabulary.

then jakke spent three years in america full-time, which shifted his accent closer to a new englander. even now, he still has some americanisms.

asph worries about what he'll do when his legion service is up. it's been his life for the past eight years; training was his life for the seven years before that. his life has been battle longer than it was ever normal.

new rome university doesn't feel like an option. not after deserting the legion to take fate into his own hands. and what mortal college would take him—new rome closed itself off from the world, their high school included.

he wonders if he'll end up like the centurion from the second—still involved, constantly there for every demigod in trouble. doubtful—he went awol. or maybe he'll be like the cupie from the third—abandoning as soon as his ten years are up. far more likely.

if asked about why he uses a white board to communicate instead of just learning asl, mills will simply write "[too lazy.]"

in reality, the white board was a gift that was waiting for him in his locker with a simple note attached—“[i’m sorry that your father did that. hopefully this makes it a little easier -mom]” he didn’t know if it was actually his mom who gave it to him, but with what little he learned about her from his father and the fact that she’s a god—he wouldn’t be too surprised. after being claimed, he's sure it was a gift from her. the white board is his one connection to the gods; he will not squander it.

early on in his fostering, the skylines did try to put him in asl classes. he did well enough, but it was a class for hearing students. no problem, he's hearing!

wrong, massive problem. hearing folks are typically also speaking. the teacher was aware that he couldn't speak, but didn't make any adjustments to how they taught. the activities to get experience and make class fun often required speaking.

mills would eventually drop the class, feeling like he was holding everyone else back. but because of the couple of months he was in the class, he knows a bunch of random, out of context signs. not enough to effectively communicate, but he can typically get the gist of what someone is signing about from what signs he does know.

anakin was raised mostly in marfa, texas. because of this, he has a thick texan accent.
