Resources and Power: The Global History of Resource Monopoly and Inequality – Medieval Africa (Gold, Salt, and Trade Routes) 1. Summary Overview In medieval Africa, empires like Mali and Ghana used gold and salt to build vast networks of power and wealth, controlling key trade routes across the Sahara. This resource monopoly not only empowered these kingdoms but also entrenched inequality,…

btw I decided to recreate Monopoly Mountain on the There Are Friends Nearby SMP
The build itself is as accurate as I could get (except for the sand on the tower. i replaced it by smooth sandstone cuz i could not be bothered sobs) ALONG WITH THE INTERIOR!!
ignore the poppy
it was a pain to try to find a reference for Every. Single. Block. Placed. In there. but it was so worth it
+ have some bonus screenshots i took
#monopoly mountain#3rd life#trafficblr#if it looks a bit different it's because i use the Stay True resource pack half the time

complaining about gender clinic again
mid-may: coincidentally finds out that the gender clinic offers [resource] they never informed me or nearly anyone else about, gets help from one of the nurses to order [resource] except she's going to send me more info over email first :)
(late july: my GP can also order [resource] for me and does so, it's different than the one i ordered through gender clinic because i wasn't sure if gender clinic was going to send me the [resource i ordered] or not. GP order goes through immediately)
early august, back from travelling: well i haven't received any emails nor word about [resource] so i'll shoot them a message
mid-august: well i haven't received any replies to my message so i'll call them even though their call times are a scarce two hours every weekday. i'm told they'll call me back over the week
this monday: over a week has passed and i received no call. i will call them again! the lady on the phone says i should contact the regional centre because that's where they send [resource orders] :) and if i don't want to do that i should call [different number that has call times only twice a week]
today: "hello special gender clinic number i really want a follow up about this thing one of your nurses promised but i have been completely unable to get a single word about despite contacting you multiple times"
"oh no!! i see you sent us a message weeks ago and nobody answered it! this isn't supposed to happen!"
"one would think"
(and then she actually emailed me!!!!! yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS TIME IT BETTER GO THROUGH I SWEAR TO GOD.)
#as far as gender clinic fuckups go this is not as horrible and awful as their many other crimes#but it's so deeply annoying and frustrating#no wonder i as a patient had to contact them multiple times to check if they had forgotten about me for half a year#also i wouldnt usually assume the gender of strangers but we know for a fact that gender clinic doesn't hire trans people#and they don't understand the concept of gender noncomformity. so i think this is a safe assumption#they are so deeply incompetent#and i know they're 'under resourced' but maybe they'd have more resources fi they weren't constantly trying to sabotage their own services#all their head doctors talk as if they are a terrible horrible service that shouldn't exist but they are the last bastion#and if they don't have a monopoly then trans people would actually get to transition and we can't have that.#sorry im so angry with them aughehbdasjkdashk dsfjkdas it's fine! im fine. it's fine#the lady on the phone today was actually nice and helpful AND kept her promise. how fucking hard can it be

Another funny D&D story: I mentioned like...months ago, in a session, that my character didn't trust the NPC serving as a travel liaison to our party. I had pretty much forgotten it a while back, mainly because we hadn't been interacting with him and had a host of immediate, much more pressing problems to solve. Today's session ended with my character overhearing him trying to set up a pact with an evil god being. vindication.gif
#I WAS RIGHT#I WAS RIGHT THE WHOLE TIME#EVERYONE ELSE JUST THOUGHT HE WAS ANNOYING BUT I WAS /RIGHT/#we also destroyed the resource monopoly today :)#AND!!! the party is now mostly made up of female characters!!! (even if the players are overwhelmingly male. only one of them is playing a#man which like yeah okay men seeing fictional women as interesting/worth thinking about is the bare minimum BUT IT'S STILL NEAT)

*looks at the notes on this post*
You were right, OP, people were not ready for this conversation.
Edit: reasons why I hardly ever talk economics/politics/ethics on this website.
I don’t think you’re ready to have an adult conversation about politics until you’re able to admit that there are things you love and enjoy that would not and should not exist in a just world. $8 billion dollar budget movies every other month don’t exist in a just world. New 900 GB AAA video games every year don’t exist in a just world. Next day delivery doesn’t exist in a just world. 80 different soda brands don’t exist in a just world.
All of those things come from exploitation on some level, and if you wouldn’t trade those for a world where everyone can eat and have a home no matter who they are or what they do, I don’t know what to tell you.
Edit: I made this comment a few days ago, but since it’s been buried in the 40k notes this post got since then, I’ll repeat it here. I agree that delivery of medications and other vital supplies are essential! The “Next day delivery” I’m talking about is shit like Amazon that relies on incredibly awful national supply chains. If I had known this post was going to get this much attention, I would have been more explicit.
#Like the wealth of billionaires and millionaires in the current day does not grow on trees#it's a product of unsustainable sustained rates of economic growth as much as it is of exploitation#It's not a magical property#in a fair world there would be less wealth overall because of less growth#and therefore more things would be more expensive to people living in what now are wealthy countries#Yes breaking up the monopoly of coca cola and pepsico could mean more soda#but if you pay fairer wages in a system that has slow or no growth#then soda will be much more expensive for the average Joe which means they will consume less of it#and with less demand comes less offer#so no you won't have 80 different types of soda#this ripples across consumer goods#the resources ARE scarce and therefore costs of opportunity are real#you do do tradeoffs#also it irritates me to no end that#no ethical consumption under capitalism#a maxim intended to dissolve paralyzing anxiety#has been turned into an excuse to absolve oneself of personal responsibility in helping along as one can#Yes the personal inconvenience that stems from purchasing local when it's possible won't fix big structural systems#but it sure as hell will make the difference to the local person you buy from#and even just for that it is worth doing#just because your actions won't have a global scale impact it doesn't mean they are irrelevant and meaningless

DON'T LET THIS GO OUT OF CIRCULATION. ADD MORE ONTO IT. QUEUE IT. DON'T LET THIS SITE FUCKING FORGET. THIS TRIAL COULD HAVE MASSIVE CONSEQUENCES FOR THE WHOLE INTERNET.
EDIT:
Originally I linked an MSN article. I was unaware they're not a trustworthy source, but many lovely people in the notes pointed it out and pointed out that the article I linked had issues, linking much better sources.
Here's an excellent addition to the post by @/thesoulofthebeautiful:
Also, I saw a lot of people freaking out in the notes like "Oh shit, is Google gonna get completely taken down????" No. It won't. Google's a trillion dollar company, this won't completely destroy it. What it'll hopefully do is keep them from having Google be the default engine EVERYWHERE. If Google loses, that is a good thing. This WILL shake up the internet, but it won't be the end.
Cool? Cool. Here's a Destiel meme:

neocities guide - why you should build your own html website
do you miss the charm of the 90s/00s web where sites had actual personality instead of the same minimalistic theme? are you feeling drained by social media and the constant corporate monopoly of your data and time? do you want to be excited about the internet again? try neocities!!
what is neocities?
neocities is a free hosting website that lets you build your own html website from scratch, with total creative control. in their own words: "we are tired of living in an online world where people are isolated from each other on boring, generic social networks that don't let us truly express ourselves. it's time we took back our personalities from these sterilized, lifeless, monetized, data mined, monitored addiction machines and let our creativity flourish again."
why should I make my own website?
web3 has been overtaken by capitalism & conformity. websites that once were meant to be fun online social spaces now exist solely to steal your data and sell you things. it sucks!! building a personal site is a great way to express yourself and take control of your online experience.
what would I even put on a website?
the best part about making your own site is that you can do literally whatever the hell you want! focus on a specific subject or make it a wild collection of all your interests. share your art! make a shrine for one of your interests! post a picture of every bird you see when you step outside! make a collection of your favorite blinkies! the world is your oyster !! here are some cool example sites to inspire you: recently updated neocities sites | it can be fun to just look through these and browse people's content! space bar | local interstellar dive bar creature feature | halloween & monsters big gulp supreme peanutbuttaz | personal site dragodiluna linwood | personal site patho grove | personal site
getting started: neocities/html guide
sound interesting? here are some guides to help you get started, especially if you aren't familiar with html/css sadgrl.online webmastery | a fantastic resource for getting started with html & web revival. also has a layout builder that you can use to start with in case starting from scratch is too intimidating web design in 4 minutes | good for learning coding basics w3schools | html tutorials templaterr | demo & html for basic web elements eggramen test pages | css page templates to get started with sadgrl background tiles | bg tiles rivendell background tiles | more free bg tiles
fun stuff to add to your site
want your site to be cool? here's some fun stuff that i've found blinkies-cafe | fantastic blinkie maker! (run by @transbro & @graphics-cafe) gificities | internet archive of 90s/00s web gifs internet bumper stickers | web bumper stickers momg | gif gallery 99 gif shop | 3d gifs 123 guestbook | add a guestbook for people to leave messages cbox | add a live chat box moon phases | track the phases of the moon gifypet | a little clickable page pet adopt a shroom | mushroom page pet tamaNOTchi | virtual pet crossword puzzle | daily crossword imood | track your mood neko | cute cat that chases your mouse pollcode | custom poll maker website hit counter | track how many visitors you have
web revival manifestos & communities
also, there's actually a pretty cool community of people out there who want to bring joy back to the web! melonland project | web project/community celebrating individual & joyful online experiences. Also has an online forum melonland intro to web revival | what is web revival? melonking manifesto | status cafe | share your current status nightfall city | online community onio.cafe | leave a message and enjoy the ambiance sadgrl internet manifesto | yesterweb internet manifesto | sadly defunct, still a great resource reclaiming online social spaces | great manifesto on cultivating your online experience
in conclusion
i want everyone to make a neocities site because it's fun af and i love seeing everyone's weird personal sites that they made outside of the control of capitalism :) say hi to me on neocities
EDIT: part 2!!
#neocities#old web#webcore#old internet#web revival#indie web#html#website#recource#guide#can you tell that i've gotten REALLY into neocities this month!!!!!#but its so FUN i love seeing everyones weird af websites#its amazing#i love celebrating the old web#ANYWAYS MAKE A NEOCITIES HERES A GUIDE#i haven't touched html in like a decade#and i've been having a great time relearning#:)#share your sites with me!!!!!!#oh and share resources if you have them!

UNEXPECTED GUESTS II

jason x reader, platonic!damian wayne
divider by: @cafekitsune & @thecutestgrotto& @omi-resources word count: 857 synopsis: Jason’s secret relationship is discovered by Damian—who keeps showing up uninvited. Jason’s patience is tested, popcorn is made, but at least Damian brought cinnamon rolls. a/n: y’all I’m still new to posting on tumblr, idk how to respond to your reblogs, but thank you for all the love!!
It started with a puzzle.
Then it became a movie.
Then it was breakfast.
Then game night.
You weren’t exactly sure how it happened, but somewhere between Damian’s first drop-in and now, he had quietly and confidently moved in emotionally. No key, no warning—just a kid who appeared at your door like a stray cat who decided you were his human now.
Jason was not amused.
“Babe,” he muttered one night, standing in the kitchen with a towel slung over his shoulder, “I think he lives here now.”
You didn’t even look up from where you and Damian were halfway through a Harry Potter movie marathon. “He brought cinnamon rolls. That buys him, like, three hours.”
Jason’s eye twitched. “That’s what you said yesterday.”
“And yet here we are. With cinnamon rolls.”
Damian didn’t even glance away from the TV. “You’re welcome.”
It didn’t stop.
Damian started showing up with snacks. Then books. Then a bonsai tree that he insisted would bring “calming energy” to the apartment—though Jason was convinced it was a surveillance device.
The turning point was when Jason came home from patrol to find you and Damian doing face masks while bickering over whether Batman could take John Wick in a fight, without prep time.
“I hate it here,” Jason muttered, dropping onto the couch like gravity had personally wronged him.
“No, you don’t,” you said, patting the spot beside you.
Damian looked smug. “You should exfoliate more. Your skin is tired.”
Jason looked like he aged five years on the spot.
Meanwhile, across Gotham, the rest of the Bat-family had questions.
“He skipped patrol again,” Tim muttered, narrowing his eyes at the tracker on his screen. “He’s somewhere in Crime Alley, but he’s not moving. That’s not like him.”
“He’s not fighting crime?” Dick asked, frowning as he squinted at the grainy feed Tim managed to pull from one of Gotham’s ancient surveillance cameras. “Is he injured?”
“No,” Tim said, zooming in. “I think he’s… playing Monopoly?”
Dick raised an incredulous eyebrow. “He’s doing what?”
Tim leaned closer. “Wait—never mind. That might be a bomb.”
“I’m following him tonight,” Tim declared. “See what he’s hiding.”
“I’m going with you,” Dick said. “Damage control. Just in case he really has joined a criminal syndicate without telling Bruce.”
That night, they tailed Damian across rooftops, watching as he made his usual unannounced entrance into Jason’s apartment through the fire escape like it was a routine—and it was. By now, you’d already prepped hot cocoa, and a blanket was folded on the couch just for him.
Jason wasn’t home yet. Which meant Damian had free reign.
When Tim and Dick peered through the neighboring rooftop window, they expected secrets. Schematics. Maybe even an underground lab.
What they found was you and Damian arguing about whether waffles or pancakes were the superior breakfast food while watching John Wick in an aggressively cozy blanket fort.
Tim blinked. “Is that a fort?”
“Oh my god,” Dick whispered. “He has a fort buddy.”
Jason returned an hour later, tired, sweaty, and one patrol away from an identity crisis.
He prayed Damian was gone so he could finally have some alone time with you. Every time he tried to initiate anything romantic, the little demon just happened to be there—coincidentally, of course.
But what awaited him was somehow worse.
The moment he stepped inside, he froze.
Dick and Tim were seated at your kitchen table, sipping cocoa. Damian was calmly painting from he sat beside you, and you looked like you were completely unfazed by the three vigilantes in your living room.
“Don’t say it,” Jason groaned, setting his helmet down.
“We followed Damian,” Dick grinned. “Turns out he’s been living a double life.”
Tim nodded solemnly. “I think he’s cheating on us.”
Jason dragged a hand down his face. “Of course you idiots followed him.”
“Her cooking is nearly on par with Pennyworth’s,” Damian said casually, not looking up from his brushwork. “And she doesn’t interrupt me when I’m watching Lord of the Rings.”
Dick raised a brow. “Lord of the Rings?”
“It’s a cinematic masterpiece,” you replied without missing a beat and Dick didn’t question it.
“We just wanted to meet the person responsible for his personality transplant,” Dick said with a teasing smile. “He’s been nice lately. It’s suspicious.”
You shrugged. “We made a deal. He’s nice to everyone else, and I let him pick Friday night movies.”
Tim gestured dramatically. “She tamed the demon.”
Jason looked up to the ceiling like he was searching for divine intervention. “Why are all of you here?”
“We came for answers,” Tim said.
“We stayed for the snacks,” Dick added.
“And the Wi-Fi,” Tim finished.
Jason looked at you.
You smiled sweetly. “Cinnamon rolls?”
He sighed, walked into the kitchen, and took one off the tray. “I hate all of you.”
But he didn’t leave.
Not when you handed him his mug. Not when you leaned into his side. Not even when Damian held up his newest painting like it was the Mona Lisa.
Jason looked around his overcrowded apartment—full of noise, cocoa, and chaos.
“…You’re all sleeping on the floor.”

honestly telltale harvey's idea about redistributing the wayne estate is dope i just think his ... uh. priorities. are wrong. because they're two-face's priorities. but. eat the rich, am i right?
#i'm not saying go in and bust his house up but it might be worth looking into waynetech being a monopoly???#or like what kind of resources bruce actually has that could be used for public good#that kinda thing

Neocolonialism is alive and well in Africa. The issues of governments starting in debt and opportunistic countries jumping in and offering loans continues. It's also the same countries they're just different governments/economic systems.
#Russia has a relationship with countries like Ghana dating back to USSR days.#Africans tended to go to university in the USSR post independence.#And of course all those loans will need to be repaid. Sometimes that comes in the form of exclusive monopolies on resources.

Senate Democrats are trying to gut Section 230
4/18/2025
Section 230 is a law passed in the 90s that gave birth to the modern internet. Without it, the internet as we know it quite literally would not exist.
Gutting part of Section 230 is why there was a tumblr purge in 2018 which led to a domino effect of making the internet worse. This was written in SESTA/FOSTA.
Senators Dick Durbin (D) and Lindsey Graham (R) are introducing a bill that would “sunset” Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Section 230 is known as the “26 words that created the Internet.” It essentially allows websites to host users’ speech and engage in good faith moderation without being held legally liable for every post users make. Without it, platforms would have to choose between ducking lawsuits by pre-censoring "controversial" content or abandoning moderation altogether. Smaller, decentralized platforms like Bluesky, Mastodon, Signal, and Reddit would likely be tanked by lawsuits, while Big Tech companies like Meta, Google, and X would survive, solidifying their monopolies
There would be no more organizing protests like Tesla Takedown online, no more posting about abortion resources or trans healthcare, and no more independent media. With the Trump admin escalating attacks on immigrants, students, journalists, and protestors, we can’t afford to lose online organizing spaces and access to information. Tell lawmakers: hands off Section 230! (link below contains petition and more details on the law)
(I know it seems like pressuring congress doesn't work, but this is how KOSA was defeated 2 sessions in a row. IT WORKS.)

Unity is fucking up so bad rn that I saw several indie devs on twitter saying they did the math and it would literally be cheaper for them to hire a small team to port their games out of Unity rather than pay the install fee. Like if Unity had a monopoly they could MAYBE get away with this bcs there wouldn't be any other options, but I can think of at least three different game engines off the top of my head rn(and it's entirely possible for a studio with the right resources to just make their own) so the CEO has literally, in ONE day, made it easier and cheaper for everyone to just stop using his product than to pay the fees they're asking for. This dude is speedrunning destroying his company. He saw Elon Musk nuke twitter and went "hold my beer". Fucking incredible. I'd almost think it was on purpose if it wasn't so goddamn stupid.
#unity#unity engine#actually four engines but I really think Bethesda needs to put Creation Kit out of it's misery already
