somehow learnt two days ago that spain is still a kingdom as well???? how did i not know this. i know netherlands is a kingdom but not spain?????
#im so used to all the other countries outside of scandinavia and uk being republics#and i know about netherlands because their royals hang out with our royals or something#just consulted wikipedia to check who else in europe is a kingdom. it's belgium#i found out about Spain by talking about how yeah norway is a kingdom but the monarch doesn't do anything so it doesn't matter#and spanish chef was like ah yeah just like spain then. and i was like what do you mean just like spain

WHAT A DAY. GOD. at least it distracted me from my Woes and pays extra for being weekend hours
- spanish chef was an asshole again but at least he wasn't there for the majority of my shift
- So Many Groups... i could barely sit down to eat for ten minutes and had to call for backup to help me out with the closing routines
- there was a shouting match between our chef and a tour guide. over potatoes. i was starting to worry it was going to end in a fist fight
- ANOTHER tour guide who was displeased with us not being as prepared for her UNANNOUNCED GROUP (by some miracle we had enough sandwiches for everyone!!!). explained to her that if she wants to make sure we've got lunch for the whole bus, call us ahead :))) "but i've been here many times before and it's never been a problem!" consider yourself one of the lucky 10.000 today!!!! communication helps us all get what we want!!!
- the one thing that made me go scream into a sweater: norway has very silly alcohol laws and we only have a license to serve alcohol but not let people sit outside with it, because we don't have the appropriate porch construction or whatever. so whenever someone wants beer on a day thats sit outside-able, i try to make it as clear as possible that They Have To Sit Inside, Is That Okay? "yes yes, we sit inside :)"
THEN THEY WENT. FUCKING OUTSIDE
so when some more people from that group came to buy more beer and i tell them, you have to sit inside, NOT outside, and they point to the outside, going "yes, we sit inside". HOW IN THE WORLD IS THAT INSIDE. THAT'S NOT INSIDE. in the end i just let them sit there because i was at the end of my rope and thankfully we didn't get fined. i hope they enjoyed those beers that cost me my sanity
- customer who asked me "salmon, is that [foreign word]?" as if i would know. i mimicked a fish with my hands to explain it's a fish. i think it helped.
- genuinely a nice moment: one of my souvenir shop colleagues who is this super sweet finnish lady i absolutely adore, always having her lunch at the bistro to the point where she has been dubbed Our Most Loyal Customer - it's a fun little practical joke where we treat her extra well and service-y and make a whole production out of it. she came by in the evening when the chef was plenty busy and i was fraying at the edges, asking if we have any food that's Quick or Ready...... so i took her to the buffet leftovers we hadn't had time to clean away yet. told her to take however much she wanted for free, YES including cake. she told me it was the happiest she had ever been :')
#northquest#me muttering to myself. do it for the cash dollar#all the customers were genuinely very nice and patient and understanding even when some dishes ended up extra late due to. gestures.#The Chaos#The Infinite Well Of Everything Happening At Once#only the tour guides were being Unhappy everyone else were all smiles and compliments#AND EVEN THEN i felt really sick of people today hahaha#no fault of theirs just GOD LET ME AT LEAST CLEAN THINGS UP BEFORE WE GET MORE CUSTOMERS AHHHH#and hopefully i was customer servicey enough for them!!! i thi#hopefully i was customer servicey enough#also the whole potatoes thing was that our chef hadn't made Enough#he had made for 35 people. we counted 27 people with that group#we had to bring in the boss to talk to the Very Displeased Tour Guide#and both the tour guide and our chef speak english with foreign accent so i think it sounds more aggressive than intended which is why#they were like 'i was being polite but he was being SO RUDE' about each other#head in hands#the things one must endure for cash dollar.

[through gritted teeth] you gotta pick your battles. put some battles down. you're NOT going to convince oslo girl we're not gonna get food poisoning from dry, clean plates just because they touched the sink area where we don't even prepare food. it is not my anxiety to quell
#northquest#she's started listing every food borne bacteria she's convinced we're going to contract if we leave some plates to dry next to the sink#and at this point it's getting Concerning. maybe she's just playing up the catastrophizing to make people stop putting plates there#but i am really REALLY struggling to understand the problem#i tried messaging her privately because i have some. Experience. with intrusive thoughts and obsessive thought spirals.#which went as well as i expected and i am NOT doing university level research on food poisoning#none of the several articles she sent me or any i looked up said anything about bacteria spreading through plates#and hygiene is important but so is peace of mind#maybe im the one getting triggered. i can NOT start thinking about every possible angle of contamination

no this post is absolutely About This Also. it's strange to me how people say yearning to always mean for a person or for love or for companionship, when there's so much else to yearn for as well! to yearn for a place, for a time, for a feeling, for rest... i have felt my heart split reaching for several things at once when i cannot have it all.
i said what i said, and if that's what this post means to you, then that's what it means!!
romance does not have a monopoly on love, you know this, that's step one. step two is that romance does not have a monopoly on yearning, on heartbreak. it's easy to think yourself immune, that you've been dealt a hand that'll let you dodge those arrows, but do you know how many ways there are to break a heart? how many ways there are to fall, even if not in love? your heart is just as strong as anyone's, so be kind to it.

"but i don't COMPLAIN like the other chef does" no you just rant to me at length about whatever is bothering you regardless of whether or not i said anything to prompt it......... why are the chefs like this
#northquest#i was not complaining about having to carry food even if im in break. why are you lecturing me#and when i expressed sympathy that his break got cut short he nearly put my face in the oven????? um.

most helpful italian i've picked up so far is FRIZZANTE (sparkling) and NATURALE (still, in the context of water). we sell bottles of both kinds of water, which are helpfully named BOBLE (with bubbles, sparkling) and STILLE (still), but the small text on BOBLE reads "natural sparkling water" so when italians are reading the small text to figure out which is which they zoom in on "natural". i always try to help them out........
#northquest#also it makes me sad to sell bottled still water for so much money when im happy to fill bottles with tap water for free#(and there's free water in the tank also. for filling glasses and such)

still thinking about the scammer - when i still thought it was a tourist looking to travel to norway i gave advice to always pick local currency, because i have to explain that to other tourists 37284738 times a day, and i was already giving travel advice... and after i did that they were like omg you're so smart with finances..... and i was like haha i wouldn't say that, but they were like noooo you're really wise about money and it's important to be smart first and you will get rich later... my aunt always says this... the scammer was really sowing the seeds for whatever upcoming scheme they have. it's all so obvious in hindisght!!!!
#and they really seemed like a Full Person like ok this is a 38 year old Malaysian-chinese lady who has a boat rental in perth#who likes hiking and skiing and seafood and was recently living in the us and is currently helping out a family business in the uk#like they had a History and Personality!!!!!#it was weird that they were planning for an upcoming norway trip in winter#which they didn't specify after i said all the summer sightseeing and hiking info#and it was like... so are you or are you not travelling in the winter ?????#idk it was a little weird but not too weird !!!
