Bug Crossing 🐛

I got the idea for this piece on a sunny day a while ago after seeing a beetle in the park struggle to get across the hot tarmac path, just a silly visual to explore the question of how much we should be mindful of the wildlife we share a habitat with - they live here too!

Need a plump bird to brighten your day? Meet the Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster)! This endangered species can be spotted throughout parts of Australia, including Tasmania. It prefers salt marshes and scrublands, where it forages for plants and seeds. Males and females have green plumage with blue markings, but males tend to be brighter in color, with more distinct patches of orange and yellow.

If you do Neopets NPC reviews, can you review the character designs for the Void Within plotline?

(There are a lot of TVW characters, so I'm just going to do the main characters that either have the plot as their first on-site appearance or have been expanded upon greatly in it (so no Baelia or Vira, though feel free to request them separately). Also, no petpets for now.)

Nyx: Nyx's design is alright; you can at least get the idea of what her deal is through the Virtupets clothing and her voided-out hand. Her color palette is also pretty consistent, using cyan for her body and purple with some gray accents elsewhere.

However, I do think that the cyan is too bright. I think they were just trying to make her look like a normal unpainted blue Aisha (as her backstory is that she comes from a poor family), but previous plots have never been concerned with matching pet colours one-to-one. I think she looks particularly nice pink, but even just using a desaturated true blue does wonders:

(Her ears are also super messed up in this art but that's not the point here.)

Also, I think she lacks personality to a degree. Her hair color and cut suggests something punkish, but her behavior is more generic (mostly stubborn) and her body type and expression are just standard.

Tavi: Tavi actually comes from Baelia's Neopedia article, but unlike Baelia she was mostly a throwaway character. You'd think TNT would give her a new outfit for a whole plot, but instead they just stuck with the original one, which probably wasn't well thought-out. I like how you can easily tell she's a hiker, but the yellow vest thing is so strange looking. She wears a different outfit during a flashback, and it looks so much better that I'm not sure why they didn't just stick with this permanently:

Also, the artist(s) really seem to struggle drawing her face. It's always super flat for some reason? Kyrii's should have longer faces with smaller eyes and very wide noses, and the ears should be thinner. Here's Yurius (one of the best Kyrii character designs don't @ me) for reference on how their heads should look:

Luxinia: Luxinia comes from the Faerie Fragments mobile game, but the plot is her first on-site appearance. She mostly just looks like a normal light faerie, but with lighter-colored hair and a different, considerably more sparkly dress compared to the standard design.

Honestly, she's fine. Mostly the design's just bland and completely lacking in personality, but then again, so is Luxinia in general.

(For the record, both pre-gray Baelia and these random background light faeries have better designs, with varying wing patterns, body types, and skin colors.)

Ozzy: Ozzy is both the best character from the plot and the best designed one. The above art doesn't do his design much justice (why is he so stubby???), but he actually looks pretty good in the comics:

He's based off of the old UC gray Yurble art with the uncurled ears, which is already a good start. You get everything you need to know from his design: he's sad, he's not poor anymore, and he's a villain. Elements like the ponytail and Neovian-style clothing are also pretty unique, and I like the design of the paint brush he's holding itself, which has glowing eyes and some cool horns for the hilt. His color palette's also good as well, and I like how he shares the same void purple as Nyx.

Don't you love it when you call a creature with he/him, they/them no one bats an eye but when you use she/her somehow there's always one person asking "Why? Proof? But boy is default?"

Female monsters are the best and it's a shame they're so under-utilized. Bonus points if they're just regular fucked up creatures without human sexual dimorphism applied

I’m literally getting Tumblr Premium just to make the ads for it go away. Seeing them is literally like trying to enjoy time with your terminally ill grandparent, but every thirty seconds they say, “I’m dying, aren’t I? Please don’t let me die. Please find a way for me to live.” Seeing them actively stresses me out.

Firefox + Ublock gets rid of most ads, and you can also install the XKit Rewritten extension and use the "Anti-Capitalism" setting to hide the rest of it. I think there's one or two non-obtrusive premium ads still floating around, but it's a lot less bad.
