What were the red flags that led to the bad tattoo?

The artist arrived a bit late (not bad on its own)

Introduced themselves twice (not bad on its own)

Misunderstood a simple adjustment request in two different ways two times (not bad on its own)

Was visibly struggling to use theirediting software for a minute (I assumed it was a new program for them and we worked it out so I didn’t think twice)

Said they weren’t very good at an aspect of it but would go ahead anyways (this was when I started feeling weird, an instinct I ignored because their portfolio was excellent)

Took a pen I’d brought with me and didn’t seem to remember when I asked for it back (not great but I get it I have ADHD)

Asked if I minded if they took a smoke break (not a problem) but then came smelling like pot (not great in a professional on the clock about to permanently alter my skin)

Began adding shading we had not discussed (this happens on occasion and he changed it when asked so I brushed it off)

Drew unsteady outlines and shaded in conflicting directions (it was in an awkward spot so I didn’t see until after)

When I was hesitant to confirm I was happy they got defensive, saying “this is what you wanted”, “you told me to do that”, and had no suggestions to fix what I was uncomfortable with

Got really awkward and shuffly when I said “not what I was aiming for but it’s alright” and wouldn’t make eye contact or say anything after

When I told them I was allergic to band-aid glue they thanked me (second skin can cause similar reactions) and when I asked if they had Saran Wrap they said “of course”, but when it came time to wrap it he just immediately went onto the exposed raw tattoo with grip wrap, no Vaseline or nothing (by this point I was certain I’d fucked up)

When I stopped them from putting the elastic wrap straight on the fresh tattoo and asked for a pad (a lot of places will use a meat packing pad as a sterile non-stick way to soak up fluids in the initial healing stage) they went “uhh yeah” and slapped a folded sheet of paper towel on instead

As we approached the counter they made no attempt to give aftercare instructions

When it was clear I wasn’t thrilled and we were walking to the front counter, where they still weren’t talking to me AT ALL, they entered a price that was our full initial agreed upon estimate with a 15% discount

When I got home and unwrapped it, the shading was patchy and the parts that were supposed to be symmetrical were out of alignment- things that don’t appear in the images featured in their portfolio work

I have since booked an emergency consult with my regular artist and finished a draft for a coverup that I’m pretty happy with
