Tumblr media
track nine of LOVER
pairing: robert renfield x f!reader
synopsis: your soulmate’s first words to you are written on your wrist
word count: 3.2k
The modern world was confusing. Renfield had watched the world change rapidly around him during his century as Dracula’s familiar and the way humans had changed never failed to surprise him. It had made life more difficult for him, Dracula’s need for good quality blood was harder to fulfil in a world where the influence of the church was increasingly slipping and sour blood was more common than ever before. His master didn’t understand that, of course, and just berated his familiar for doing such a poor job in attending to his needs.
Finding DRAAG had been a good twist of fate. New Orleans wasn’t quite what he’d expected, slightly more lawless than he’d initially assumed, but it had plenty of derelict buildings that he could move Dracula between if they were to be discovered and people went missing frequently enough that taking victims to his master wasn't going to alert too much suspicion. The group had become something of a lifeline for him after a few weeks in the city. He’d followed Bob inside after thinking he would make a good victim, and five weeks later he was still coming to the group. Everyone was so desperately sad, and a part of Renfield had identified with their stories and that kept him coming back.
It was especially hard listening to the people who had realised they were codependent with their soulmate. To watch them lament that this was meant to be the perfect person for them and they had fallen into destructive patterns with them had hit a sore spot somewhere deep inside Renfield. He’d never met his soulmate, his marriage to his late wife had been one of convenience rather than based on a soul bond, and it didn’t mean he loved her any less but his heart had always ached that he’d probably never meet his soulmate. Him and his master had moved so frequently that he was sure his soulmate had passed him by like ships in the night, or day really since he and his master did all their travelling by night.
If his master had ever noticed him absentmindedly tracing his words, he had never commented on it. His master didn’t have any words, Renfield had checked one time when he’d been tending to his needs, and he was sure if he ever brought up being lonely his master would begin another speech about how he didn’t need a soulmate, that they had each other and that humans were beneath them. The lectures had been focused solely on bringing his master back to full power recently but they had been happening more frequently, like tonight for instance. He’d been ready to go to the DRAAG meeting when Dracula had started another lecture about having to consume sour blood again and wanting Renfield to find him some nuns to eat.
He’d arrived late to this meeting, nervously babbling out an apology to Mark and the others as he took a seat in the back circle. It had taken him a few minutes to realise that there was a new face sitting with the group. She was sitting next to Carol, and the two seemed to know each other based on how they’d moved their chairs to be closer together. They were whispering quietly to each other, not quite loud enough to be audible but enough that he knew they were doing so. He tried not to stare, but there was something about Carol’s friend that had entranced him. He began to trace his words again, a nervous habit he’d developed over the years, only stopping when he saw Mark take notice. He waited for Lawrence to finish his share before looking to Renfield.
“Renfield, do you want to share today?”
“No, I’m good I think.” Mark sighed lightly at the denial, clearly having expected it.
“You’ve been coming here for a few weeks now, and you don’t have to say anything, but you’re always welcome to share. This is a safe space for you to speak your truth.”
“I suppose so.” Mark and the rest of the group were quiet for a moment, clearly waiting for another round of pushback from Renfield but when he gave none, Mark proceeded in a gentle tone.
“Is it your soulmate?”
“No, I haven't actually met them yet.” There were a few sympathetic noises from various people sitting in the circle. If they felt bad that a man who looked to be in his thirties hadn’t met his soulmate, he didn’t want to think about how they’d react if they knew he was almost one hundred years old and hadn’t met them. They’d probably refer him for a psychological evaluation if he said that part out loud though; whilst he didn’t exactly take pride in his appearance, Dracula’s ability to stop his body ageing meant he hadn’t physically aged for almost as long as he’d known the Count.
“And do you think the person you’re in a codependent relationship with is taking advantage of that?”
“Honestly? No. My boss he, uh, he’s blank. I don’t think he particularly minds but that also means that he doesn’t care about me and finding my soulmate.” Being blank wasn’t particularly common, and it always invoked a specific sympathy from everyone who found out. The idea that you were a person without another half in a society where that was the norm always tended to put people on edge. Renfield had always been somewhat relieved that Dracula didn’t have a soulmate, the idea of having another vampire to tend to the needs of and transport around seemed like much more hassle than he cared to entertain. One Lord of Darkness was more than enough, thank you very much.
“That must be hard for him, but that doesn't mean that you have to put off your chances of happiness just because he’s blank. Has he ever taken any interest or even acknowledged that you haven’t met your soulmate yet?”
“I don’t think it’s even occurred to him to be honest. I think if anything he’s probably glad, I think it would be fair to say that meeting my soulmate may influence my ability to do my job the way he expects me to.”
“So what would happen, hypothetically speaking, if you were to seek out your soulmate?” The question drew only a blank in Renfield’s mind, and he noticed the flicker of pity that passed over Mark’s face when he struggled to imagine a world where he prioritised himself rather than his boss.
“What do you mean?”
“If you went off and tried to find your soulmate, what would happen?”
“I couldn’t leave my boss for that long.”
“Well, why not?”
“He has this medical condition you see, it means he can’t go out in the daytime, or much at all. If I’m not there to help him, well it doesn’t bear thinking about really.”
“Oh so you’re like a carer then?” Renfield wasn’t sure who spoke up, but it occurred to him that his relationship with his master would sound very strange if he disagreed with the interjection.
“I suppose you could put it like that.”
“I understand that it’s more complex when there are medical needs involved but listen to me Renfield, you cannot put your entire life on hold for someone else. You are important, you have value, and you are more than what your boss seems to see you as.” Renfield shifted uncomfortably in his seat, wringing his hands together. It was much easier attending the meetings when the spotlight wasn’t on him. He stayed quiet in the hopes that someone would interrupt his share but no one came to his rescue and he was left scrambling for something to say next.
“I guess it’s just hard because if he doesn’t have me then there’s no one else who could take care of him. After working for him for so long it wouldn’t feel right to just leave him.” Mark seemed to notice that he was getting more uncomfortable and mercifully decided to open the discussion back to the rest of the group by talking about the sense of duty that came with being codependent before announcing that the meeting was over. Renfield stayed in his seat as most of the group migrated towards the exit. A few people were still inside when he finally stood and went over to the refreshment table, his throat aching for a glass of water. He made quick work of the glass and stood for a moment, cursing himself for speaking ill of his master. He was so in his head that he didn't hear the footsteps coming up behind him until the person spoke.
“I like what you said about your boss.” The world seemed to shift on his axis as he heard the soft voice behind him speak. He turned around and saw the shy smile you were sporting, completely unaware that you had just turned his world upside down in a single sentence. You'd spoken his words.
His words had always confused him slightly, and that had only grown when he's become Dracula's familiar. He'd never been able to imagine a scenario when he'd be freely talking to people about his master, but this made perfect sense in a weird way. He realised that he hadn't spoken yet, and he probably looked like a deer in the headlights and it took him a few beats to come up with a response.
“It’s you.” He watched as it dawned on you what had just occurred between the two of you. The smile that grew on your face made you look truly radiant, like an angel sent directly from above. It felt like he was being saved and being damned all at once and any and all trepidation he’s had about this moment vanished from his mind as he took you in.
“Hey.” The word is soft, you’re clearly still trying to process what’s just happened after all, but it feels like it echoes in his mind, a pleasant change from the way his master’s voice booms through his skull when he deems it fit to communicate like that.
“Hello.”
“I’m, uh, I’m (Y/N).” You gesture to the name sticker on your jacket, and he smiles when he sees a small smiley face drawn next to your name.
“Robert. Robert Montague Renfield.” He holds out a hand to you, trying to hide the slight tremor, and when you take his hand it feels like a shock running through his body. It’s electrifying and relaxing all at once and it’s perfect. You’re perfect.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you.”
“It’s funny really, of all the places in the world I never expected it to be at a codependency anonymous group.” It occurred to Renfield that you hadn’t spoken at all during the meeting and he truly hopes you’re not here because of some awful person you can’t escape from. All his anxieties are put to rest when you reply though.
“I’m not codependent actually, I’m just here to support Carol. But, if you’d like help with your situation, I’d be more than happy to listen. Or if not, we can just grab a coffee, get to know each other?”
“I’d like that very much.” You beam at him before turning to the refreshment table and picking up one of the small business cards that had been scattered amongst the snacks. You grab the pen that lay next to the name tags and write something on the back of the card, handing it to him.
“I need to take Carol home but you should call me. We can go grab that coffee.”
“I will. Yes, definitely.” He watched as you turned to face Carol and the two of you made your way to the exit. You turned back to face him, giving him a small wave as you walked out into the cool night, and Renfield was left alone in the gymnasium. It was only then that it occurred to him that he had no plans for people to bring to Dracula to satisfy him tonight. He cursed himself lightly under his breath as he walked outside and began the walk back to the hospital. The closer he got the more anxious he became, and it was only when he passed the church that his luck seemed to change. He spotted a woman, maybe in her late twenties or early thirties, leaning against the wall and looking to be in rather bad shape. He’d been cautious upon approaching her in case she was with someone but when she drunkenly slurred out that her friends had ditched her, her fate was sealed. It hadn’t been difficult to overpower her, the chloroform in his pocket had done its job as quickly as ever and, with the aid of a bug, it had been easy to pull her into a bridal hold and walk the rest of the way back to the hospital.
Luck seems to remain on his side as he makes it the entire walk without spotting a single patrolling police car, and once he got to the hospital it was easy for him to drop the body onto one of the gurneys he always left near the entrance and then push that the rest of the way. He made it through the hospital without hearing his master until finally reaching the room his master spent most of his time residing in.
“Renfield! Where have you been? Where’s my dinner?”
“Right here, master!” He pushes the unconscious body off the gurney to the ground just shy of the makeshift throne his master was currently sitting in. Dracula didn’t look at all pleased by the offering, slowly rising to his feet. His recovery from their run-in with the vampire hunters had been a slow one, but his skin had finally started to grow back and, whilst he was revolting to look at, it meant he was nearly fully healed again.
“Is it a nun?”
“Um, well, no, but she was hanging around outside a church when I found her?” The answer seemed to satisfy his master enough for the vampire to start feeding from the body. It had been fairly easy for Renfield to become accustomed to the blood and gore that came with being a familiar but the sound of Dracula ravenously feeding on some soon-to-be corpse never failed to make him queasy.
“Not as sour as most of the other trash you’ve brought me. Bring me more like this one Renfield.”
“Yes master.” Renfield went about his usual tasks whilst his master fed; moving the depleted corpses to the pile he’d made a few rooms down from the main chamber of the hospital and trying to keep himself occupied until he could move the fresh body. It didn’t take long for Dracula to drain her fully, but his master’s mood seemed to shift when Renfield approached.
“You smell different, Renfield.”
“I’m sorry?” He watched as Dracula rose to his feet, shifting rapidly around him and coming to a stop just in front of him after a moment. Renfield’s eyes dropped to the floor automatically as he waited for his master to speak to him.
“You met your soulmate.” It wasn’t a question, Renfield realised, but an observation. It was all he could do to nod, questioning how on Earth his master could possibly know he’d met his soulmate from his smell.
“How did you-?”
“It changes the blood of a man, meeting his soulmate. Sweetens the blood, makes it sing.” Dracula’s voice lilted slightly at the mere idea and Renfield felt his heart drop. His chance of having a normal relationship with his soulmate seemed to be going out the window with every word his master spoke.
“Oh.”
“I do hope that this won’t change your fealty, Renfield. I would hate to have to…remove any distractions that come your way.” The hand on the back of his neck makes Renfield flinch, and he listens as Dracula chuckles deeply whilst tracing his carotid artery with one of his nails. He never presses deep enough to draw blood, but the warning is heavy in the air. He hates the way he quivers under his master's touch but after almost a century of knowing just how lethal Dracula’s clawed nails are, the reaction is uncontrollable.
“I, uh, of course not, master.”
“Good.” As Dracula slowly shuffled away from him, Renfield was left with the impression that this wasn’t the end of the discussion. He doesn’t move until Dracula tells him to leave, and it’s with a sigh of relief that he realises that the conversation is indeed over for now. He walks out of the main chamber, leaning against one of the walls after a brisk walk, and slides down until he’s resting on the floor. He’s not sure how long he spends sitting on the floor trying to quiet his mind and failing. The only thing that pulls him back to reality is when he slides his hand into one of his suit pockets and feels the business card with your number on it. He pulls his phone from his back pocket, tracing his fingers over your number on the business card in his other hand. He types your number in, toying with the idea of what he should send to you. He types multiple messages before trying something simpler and more to the point.
Hello, (Y/N). It’s Robert Renfield. Would you still be up for grabbing that coffee?
He presses send before he has time to debate whether it’s a good first message to his soulmate, and he locks his phone, letting it flop down onto his chest. He lets out a sigh, and closes his eyes. He only opens them when he feels his phone vibrate, and he looks down to see if you’ve responded.
Hi Robert! I’d love to, how does 9am sound?
The fact you responded so quickly makes him smile slightly, and it almost makes him forget about his master’s threat. Almost.
That sounds perfect.
Awesome, see you outside the gym? I know a great coffee shop nearby :)
I look forward to seeing you.
He shuts his phone off after sending the final message, letting his eyes close once again. He doesn’t have a bed here, hasn’t for a long time now, and he feels the edges of sleep start to close in on him. His last thought before falling asleep is that he needs to come up with a cover story for when you inevitably ask him about everything he shared at the codependency group because there’s no way you’ll believe that he’s a vampire’s familiar.

Which character from The Lord of the Rings do you personally think would be the favourite for each of the Crew of Light? (Let's assume Van Helsing/all would still be alive when the books came out)
Anon, I don't know if you're aware of Stephen King's weird belief that Dracula and LOTR are the same story? From the Salem's Lot introduction:
When I discovered J.R.R. Tolkien's Rings trilogy ten years later, I thought, "Shit, this is just a slightly sunnier version of Stoker's Dracula, with Frodo playing Jonathan Harker, Gandalf playing Abraham Van Helsing, and Sauron playing the Count himself."
I really don't like it but I have to admit that it's annoyingly justifiable. Anyway, I tried not to pair characters with their Stephen King match in this.
Let's start with Van Helsing, who loves all things weird and inexplicable. He is so obviously a Tom Bombadil fan. "Sorry, the early part of the story is just going to segue into meeting an all-powerful spirit of the woods who won't really come up again"? Van Helsing would be all over that.
We don't really know much about Arthur's personality compared to most of the other characters but he is Noble and Heroic and Principled. You might be thinking his favourite character would be Aragorn but these traits find their greatest expression in Faramir fans. He would also have a soft spot for Sam.
And this ties in nicely with Lucy, the beautiful young woman who yearns for freedom but whose day-to-day life can resemble a gilded cage. Lucy would love Eowyn. I'm actually kind of sad right now that Lucy couldn't read LOTR due to being fictional and dead. She would love Eowyn so much.
(That one is kind of a Stephen King match, sorry).
Mina and Jonathan are the great romance of Dracula and I think would be drawn to great romances in their turn. They would also be LOTR fans, which I conclude because all my biggest train nerd friends are LOTR fans. They would have read the Silmarillion (unlike me) and their favourites would be Lúthien and Beren.
I see Quincey as being into heroism and sacrifice. He's a Boromir guy. Nothing more to say.
I don't know how much I can see Jack being into LOTR. I imagine him being more into sci-fi, maybe counting down the days before each new edition of Amazing Stories. But if Arthur and Quincey (both of whom I see as being more keen on fantasy) persuaded him to read it, and he wasn't too frustrated by the soft magic system, then I think the #1 Manliness Appreciator would obviously be into Aragorn.
And finally, in our Stephen King view of Dracula Renfield is clearly the Gollum of the story: locked away, despised, and corrupted by evil. But Renfield tries his hardest to fight back, and it kills him. Renfield's favourite character has to be Frodo.

My attempt at a sort of 'meet the artist'.
Hello poppies! I am IronRye.
A female character creator in the states.
Tumblr media
While I'm dipping my toes in the selfship community (and I've meet some FANTASTIC fellow people there) my main go to is ocxcanon. I LOVE designing fancharacters with the high priority of fantasizing about them smooching my favorite characters.
I've been making characters in a physical art form for over 15 years. Many of my ocs are created with great care to make stories about them, whether to further the canon story or create a alternate story with the canon characters, rather then primarily used for wish fulfillment romance (not that there's anything wrong with that of course). As well as include those characters in fics I might post eventually.
Be sure to check my secondary blog for a detailed list of my oc ships. I am all for maintaining a positive shipping space between self shippers and oc shippers alike.
Feel free to send me your favorites for me to gush over, or even offer advice or ask questions in any degree.
My asks are always open!
My OC Blog: @ironrye-afterdark
🎀 More About Me 🎀
My pronouns are she/they. I'm a 5'1" cis bisexual with an adoration for fictional old men. My favorite season is Fall and my favorite holiday is a tie with Halloween and Christmas. I love bows and ribbons. My favorite flowers are sunflowers.
I love Disney and Dreamworks movies, Renfield 2023, The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, The Lost Boys, The MCU pre phase 4, and The Mummy 1999. Some of my favorite shows include Gravity Falls, Hellsing, Courage The Cowardly Dog, anything X-Men, and Avatar the Last Airbender. I'm not really into video games, but ones I like are Mario, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil, Overwatch, and Sea of Thieves.
I hyper fixate on one fandom thing to the next and back like crazy. I rarely drop a comfort show or movie I've indulged in, rather it sits in the back of my mind before springing back up.
Other hobbies collecting way too many enamel pins, novelty candles, stuffed animals and the occasional fan merch.

Seeing posts on the dash that r like “reminder that every Dracula character would be racist and sexist and homophobic and would hate you specifically” and I’m like. Yeah. We know. But we also like to take characters and go “but what if they were Like Me, Instead” and spit on the author’s grave Cause the fact of the matter is that people Like You (whether you’re gay, trans, intersex, a poc, of a minority religion, etc) have always existed. White literature didn’t depict them much, because Society. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to say “fuck that, actually, I see the potential for a story With People Like Me In It in here, even if it wasn’t meant to be that way, and the public domain is free for the taking”
Does the fandom have problems with racism and sexism and various -phobias? Absofuckinglutely. This is tumblr. Sometimes people on here are stupid. But when it comes to people who are having ultimately harmless fun saying “how would the story be different if this character was a person like me?” just like. Let them do that.
Also the same “ohhh they’d hate you cause they’re From The Past” argument could be applied to almost any historical media lol. If you’re a fan of other white-authored classics and you think that it’s a Cool Argumentative Point to say that the Dracula characters would hate their fandom then…buddy idk what to tell you but by your logic then every white character from earlier than the 1980s would be the same way. But shocker, people don’t like being told that their blorbos would hate crime them. Let people play with their fictional blorbos so long as they’re not being actually harmful. Some Dracula fandom problems ARE an issue (ex. people being ableist about Renfield and to a lesser extent Jonathan, people prioritizing Jonathan over Mina, people not questioning the hidden xenophobia in the original Dracula character when they’re creating their own adaptations, etc). however if someone is like “what if Mina was a WOC” or “what if Quincey was gay” then like. they are just doing the public domain equivalent of tumblrites playing with jpegs like dolls, trying to see themselves in a story that originally left them out of it.
I guess what I’m trying to say is

12, 27, 35 for the ask game? i’m really curious about your wives actually if you remember anything
[ for this ask game ]
Tumblr media
Im cutting this off bc it got crazy long but ty for asking
(Implied murder? Kin guilt stuff)
12 / Memory of home
I spent a long time in that castle, but I remember honestly not doing much. I remember the several wild animals that lived in and around the castle, and I remember just existing equally with them. We never bothered each other. I remember tripping over broken stairs, which wasn't too often because I'd gotten pretty used to everything. I remember the woods near the castle, and the animals that inhabited them. Mostly the wolves of course
But "Home" in a more general sense, being the world I lived in, I oddly remember everything in black and white. The knowledge of color is there of course, but my memories are just black and white. Which is honestly why I've never wanted to see my source in color
27 / your partner(s) and something you loved about them
This question is difficult. I loved alot of people. But relationships were mostly ,, one-sided. It always makes me feel bad to admit but . Yeah. I loved alot of people but i didn't, Care for alot of people.
I remember talking to Lucy alot more than I did "on screen" before i like. Yk. We got along alright and I remember her being really funny and interested in alot of folklore I had told her about. I miss her sometimes, but not really from my own perspective If that makes sense? I just have alot of. Guilt in that area. Obviously. can't think about it too much ughm
There are things I look back at that I can appreciate about the people I knew. (I will not be bringing up renfield for the sake of my mental health.) The only memories I really have of my wives is that they spent a surprising amount of time as bats. Just casually,in the castle and out. More than I did. That's something I just find admirable. I was not very kind to them
35 / how do you get your memories
My memories are extremely foggy and extremely vague. I was not meant to exist outside of metaphor, so my memories are just very unclear. It pains me, however my memories just sort of come to me most of the time. But occasionally through conversation about my source, and very occasionally fan fiction (because I don't typically read fan fiction)
But most commonly from engaging with my source and my related kins and stuff
Post over goodnight

For a Christmas present, my dear friend @belliesandburps bought me this lovely piece of fiction. Sixteen days into the New Year, and I finally got a chance to properly sit and read through this graphic novel in its entirety. I am extremely happy with it overall. So, before I go on, I just wanna say...thanks, BNB. This means a lot to me, truly. <3
"Bram Stoker's Dracula, Starring Bela Lugosi" is a graphic novel adaptation of...well...Bram Stoker's Dracula. As in, it is an adaptation of the original book, NOT any of the film versions. The big twist is that Dracula is illustrated with the likeness of Bela Lugosi: arguably the most iconic portrayer of Dracula, who famously played him in the 1931 Universal classic. The artwork is done in a monochrome style, all in black and white, with heavy shadows, and "sets" designed to look like some of those from the Universal film. While Lugosi's is the only true likeness in the story, some of the other characters - most notably Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker - do bear a resemblance to the actors from the Universal film. (I should add immediately that others look absolutely nothing like them; I was a bit disappointed that Dwight Frye was not used as the reference for Renfield.) The comic essentially poses the question: "What if Bela Lugosi had been in a more faithful adaptation of the novel, and they'd been able to get away with things you couldn't do in 1931?"
First of all, this graphic novel is a shockingly faithful adaptation of the original book. While it obviously can't keep all of Stoker's text, it does keep a surprising amount without ever feeling too wordy. It also hits just about every single character, plot detail, or story element involved, as far as I can find. The only great exception is that Dracula looks like Lugosi, which is not how Stoker describes things...buuut if Dracula looked the way Stoker described, that would sort of negate the entire purpose of the comic, so that's not really an issue. With that said, they DO keep the gimmick from the book of Dracula becoming younger as the story goes on.
I also feel - and this may be surprising - that the graphic novel IMPROVES upon the original book, most specifically during the climax. One of the few problems I have with the original novel is that the climactic defeat of the Count is a slight letdown, at least in my opinion. Incidentally, this is also a problem I have with the Lugosi film, albeit for somewhat different reasons. The comic improves on both by expanding on the climax slightly, while still holding true to Stoker's basic description of what happens, creating a very exciting and dramatic finale.
Because of all this, I actually feel this graphic novel might be the most accessible adaptation of the original novel for a lot of people: if you ever wanted to read Stoker's original tale, without ACTUALLY reading the copious, dense 1897 book, this is a good substitution. It has everything in the book (more or less), features the most visually iconic Dracula (albeit in printed/illustrated format), and in some places improves upon the story without REALLY changing it. If you're a Dracula fan of just about any sort - a fan of Lugosi, a fan of the original novel, or both - I very highly recommend checking out this book.
Literally my only gripe with the graphic novel is that I wish Lugosi's wasn't the only real likeness featured. I wish some of the other characters who appeared in the Universal original - especially the aforementioned Renfield - looked like their film counterparts, too. (Really, the only exception there is Dr. Seward, since the character in the film is VERY different from the one in the novel.) But hey, at least they got arguably the most important likeness from the 1931 film in. That's ultimately all that "counts." Ha Ha. :P

S5. Ep1. Buffy vs. Dracula
Written by Marti Noxon, making it the first ever season premiere not written by Joss, “Buffy vs. Dracula” is generally seen as one of the weakest season openers of the show, with many fans (and even writers!) split on their opinions of it. Both Marti and Joss loved the idea of having the iconic Dracula be a part of the episode, yet admit that tonally, it was a challenging fit:
“We tried to pack a lot into that episode and it was actually one of the hardest episodes we ever had to break. I think I wrote an entire draft of that script which we threw out and then wrote a whole another draft of that script and usually things go a little smoother. That was a tortured project…It’s hard to bring a character who’s that iconic into your universe; it lent itself to camp. At the same time, we were actually trying to do something deeper than that. We were trying to make it emotional and make it have some resonance. But it was a campy situation, and tone wise we weren’t always sure where we were...So we struggled for tone and we were tired coming out of season four.” -Marti
David Fury was one of the writers that hated the episode, saying, “I can go with a modern Dracula. But it was just the fact that he was somebody else’s creation invading Joss’ creation. I thought it sort of diminished our rules, our universe…I was actually very bothered by that episode. I thought it flew in the face of the mythology of our vampires. It doesn’t play in the Dracula playground. The kind of logic I would apply to it is the thing Joss would say who cares? Well, I do. I care. We’ve created these rules and I don’t want to break our rules. And Dracula totally broke the rules. We just said, Dracula is some weird anomaly of a vampire, and seeing Xander become Renfield was all fun, but it was an episode I had difficulty embracing. I thought it sort of commented on how Buffy’s universe is kind of fictional. When you start introducing another famous fictional character into our world, to me it bursts the bubble of this universe that Joss created and we created with him. Some people enjoyed it very much. I’m just not one of them.”

👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please!
🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?
🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?
👀 Tell me about an up and coming wip please!
I do have a Seward/Renfield fic that I’ve put down for a bit but would really like to pick up again (there’s another unrelated fic I’m trying to finish drafting first while I still have momentum). It is very tangentially inspired by a post I made about the end goal of Renfield’s worship of Dracula and his belief in accumulative life- what if he wanted to become a vampire so he could consume Dracula himself, who has hundreds of years of accumulated lives within him.
The main fic is about renfield becoming a vampire and returning to the asylum to drain jack of his blood as revenge. Jack ends up being turned on by it, even as he’s like well this is the end I guess. Being killed by my own patient after failing literally everyone in my life.” It’s got all the things I like about Seward fics: self loathing, unrelenting horny, and absolutely no brakes
🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?
I think I research a medium amount- I’ll often reread sections of a book to make sure that I’m staying in character and to see how authors described a location to make sure I’m matching the little details. I’m pretty detailed oriented.
The thing I actually research the most is medical treatment and injuries- they fascinate me and I find it very fun. One of my pet peeves is reading media where characters get hit in the head or something and then decide not to go to the hospital- I’m always like you very likely have intracranial bleeding. You are going to DIE. SEE A DOCTOR. So I always want to get my symptoms to be as accurate and specific as possible and also the treatment as well. I think for Sometimes A Tunnel Only Leads To Darkness I was deep into reading medical journals about the accepted situations for EMTs to reset broken bones. Did you know that usually they just leave the broken bone Like That until they get to the hospital? I got extremely carried away…
🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?
I have a horribly embarrassing story about getting super drunk and trying to convince my friend to read my Star Wars fan fiction. Twice. The same friend. So yes, most of my irl friends know I write fan fiction, but I don’t think any of them have actually read any of it. I know I shouldn’t be, but I am somewhat embarrassed to show my irl friends the fanfic I’ve written, especially because some of my fics both require a little bit of “hear me out” and well as being somewhat personally revealing.
It’s funny, me and one of my friends both write warhammer fan fiction, and we both KNOW the other one writes it, but I know we both write such different types of fan fiction that I think we’re both too embarrassed and afraid of the other’s judgement to show our fanfiction to each other. Maybe one day…

5, 9, and 13 for the movie questions ask game! 😊
Hello @minayuri and thanks for participating the game!
Movie Questions Ask Game:
5. What is your favorite genre of film? It is definitely historical fiction like period dramas and crime mystery. A film or tv series combined with both of these genres, there are only few of them: The Untouchables (1987), Da Vinci Code (2006) (it has references to historical period), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) and Babylon Berlin (2017-2022).
9. What was the last movie you watched? What did you think of it? With my sister we watched Renfield (2023) and even when I am not a fan of splatter films and it was very gore, I liked it a lot. The jokes were funny and I was entertained till the end. Points for Nicolas Cage for throwing himself to role like that. Marvelous remakes of the 1931 Dracula scenes!
13. What is your comfort film? The 1980's crazy comedies in general and Three Men and a Baby (1987). She-Devil (1989) is crazier and still good. Working Girl (1988) is a romance comedy, but one of the 80's favourites of mine. The 80's crazy comedies have something to do with the way of thinking what was considered trendy back then. The yuppie culture including expensive food and technologies. Big home party as we see in the start, where catering are serving sparkling wine and shrimps. 😄
