TIDES: A Message from Poseidon
"My seafaring child: You are the tides, Swaying between low and high; Your mood like the moon, Waxing, waning, and everchanging; Your pain like a storm, Brutal and destructive; Your mind like the depths, Dark, powerful, and all-consuming. In this moment, You feel lost at sea, As though the waves are thrashing you about, Threatening to capsize your ship And swallow you whole; You feel unsteady without an anchor, Afraid the storm will win the fight, That you will succumb to the wreckage And drown deep out of sight. My sea-yearning child: This storm will not win And the waves will calm down; Your ship will make it to shore For we won't let you drown; Your anchor is secure And has never left your side; The pain will soon ease And you will rise about the tide. In this moment, Hold steady to hope Because the storm will soon pass; The sun will shine again And your pain will not last; Should you feel lost at sea, Simply reach out a hand; We will bring you to shore And help you to stand."

A few common misconceptions and hurtful myths about the gods I worship:
• Demeter is not careless or selfish for reacting the way she did to the loss of her daughter. Grief, even amongst the gods, is an emotion so powerful that it causes us to loose control, and surrender to our own emotions. You would not blame a woman in grief over the loss of her child for having a mental breakdown. Also, I don’t personally believe that the plagues that befell Greece after these myths were written were caused inherently by Demeter, as agricultural disasters happened often, especially back before modern farming and cultivation knowledge, and it was if anything, a coincidence of timing which frustrated and worried men used as justification to attack and blame Demeter as a target of their angst, and a scapegoat to direct their suffering at.
• Poseidon wasn’t a rapist, nor was he inherently malicious or “evil”. Although he is most certainly impulsive and often aggressive, it is rarely in a malicious way, as many of the myths paint him as. You have to remember as the embodiment of the sea, sailors and others who knew the dangerous and unforgiving nature of the ocean often cast these traits onto Poseidon by association, and not all of the things they believed of him were necessarily true. The idea that he is a rapist is also a myth, or many myths, cultivated I’m sure by the high ranking and extremely misogynistic patriarchal men of Greece, who saw powerful male gods like Poseidon and Zeus as equals to themselves (foolish) and therefore believed that if they liked taking advantage of women and other unconsenting individuals, than surely they did too. (I imagine many found themselves smitten as a result of this.) if anything, Poseidon was more of a dominant father figure, like Zeus. He saw the women of the Parthenon as his daughters and sisters, as well as his followers, hence the reason many modern devotees such as myself refer to him as “father”.
• conversely, Artemis was not a misandrist, she didn’t hate sex, and she was not some uncontrollable psychopath. Many of Artemis’s myths heavily exaggerate her animalistic tendencies, which do exist, but are certainly not psychopathic or evil in nature, as nature itself is inherently incapable of being so. She also did not “hate” men, non-virgins, or sex. In fact, as the patron goddess of pregnant women and babies, these things are inherently connected to her domain. One of the reasons these beliefs have emerged, besides the myths, is that people have exaggerated the fact that as a virgin goddess who remains chaste as a virtue, Artemis tends to avoid men and people who aren’t women in her myths, not out of misandry, or other ideas that are honestly quite terf-y, and have been used to push transphobic narratives, but because she hopes to protect these virtues. She does not hate her male, trans, or otherwise non-cis woman followers, she values them just as much, and this is an unfortunatley common, and hurtful, misconception. Like Poseidon, she is often aggressive, and can be impulsive, but she’s MUCH more of a stern mother of nature, than a ruthless animal.
———————————————————————-
Please don’t fall for these common misconceptions, read Hellenic texts and stories yourself, and try not to spread misconceptions yourself! There are many reliable resources to avoid this, such as Wikipedia, theoi.com, and more! Have a blessed day 💙🏛️

Worshipping Poseidon
Chronically ill and homeless edition <3
Water is NOT a lazy offering. Drink it in honor of him, do libations with it, stir in some flavorings clockwise for an energy boost
Relax with some ocean soundscapes in the background, or while you walk place to place
Decorate your mobility aids with ocean scenery or cute little sharks and trident stickers.
Wear jewelry that you may have and carry with you Keep in mind that He does not judge, and if you are away and cannot handle an alter space, that is okay. Everything is okay, and he is still there even if you don't feel his presence for a time being.

Prayers to Poseidon
1) Poseidon, dark-haired god of all waters, by whose will alone do sailors fare in safety. Lord of the black sea depths, swirling dark and deep, swift in thought, sure in deed, fervent in feeling, the ocean's caprice is yours,
O Poseidon; overwhelming one, I praise and honor you.
Mighty Poseidon, unfathomable god, I pray to you. You at whose touch sweet water springs forth, at whose whim the earth breaks open beneath our feet, whose pure power we feel in our bones and our blood, show me life's essence, life's rage; pull me like the tide; grant me safe harbor at last, shield me from storms.
2) May Posideon ward floods, earthquakes, and others from you.
3) Poseidon of the white-capped waves, dark-haired god of the the cold salt sea, of raging rivers and sweetwater springs,
Ancient one, in Knossos and in Thebes your name was known, carved with care on tablets of clay, spoken softly, prayerfully, in old Mycenae.
World-shaker, god who holds in hand the bones of the deep earth,
In Corinth were you well honored with games of skill and prowess;
Throughout the land your temples stood, shining and tall.
The sea depths are yours, Poseidon; your palace lies on the ocean floor, far removed from Olympos heights and yet a glorious dwelling in your wondrous realm.
Bearer of the trident, stirrer of storms, master of horses, granter to mankind of many gifts, Poseidon, mighty son of Kronos, I praise you.

This is how I realized I wanted to worship Poseidon btw: *thinks about the beach for almost a week even though I hate going to the beach most of the time* "weird...whatever" *Has a very very very strange drean about the beach* "oooookay wtaf" *Daydreams about the beach for a whole school day* "Hey **Irl friend** I guess we worship Poseidon now"
The moment I said this I stopped thinking about beachs (for that day, I still regularly think about being going to the beach. The cloest on is 10 hours away btw)

Devotional Writing - Poseidon
Tumblr media
The frogs croaked at the flock of birds overhead, leaping from one rock to another. The creek was beautiful, deep in the woods, at peace where man could not disturb its natural flow. The steady sounds of rushing water, sheltered by rocks and filling the gaps of silence. The snakes curled in the basking light, slithering into the comfort of their bushes. Each pebble soaked, slick and shining like crystals by the waterbed. A child, or two, passed by. One rock after another they’d jump across the stream. Every now and then one would fall in. It was never bad when they did, they left in their soaked clothes and it invoked them to splash and embrace the cold of the stream, allowing the water’s energy to overtake them. Their clothes are muddy, rocks far too slippery to return to dry ground. They wade until they reach the other side, and continue on their way. The creek to them is an ocean to man. The children play in the creek while their parents dive into the vast seas. Man ventures oceans, admiring their gifts. A great gift to man. That is what you bring me, my King. The beaches with ocean stretching farther than my sight can bear to reach. The creek where water flows endlessly, unbothered by the negativity of the world. That is where I find you. Where I hold your gift, my King.
Tumblr media
I wrote this near the end of last year, and decided to expand upon it. Poseidon has had such an impact on my life, and I am forever grateful to be devoted to him.

Bow to them, revere them, revel in them, sing your praises to the oceans blue, and respect the waters, the gods, the oceans incarnate! In all of their ferocious, intimate, powerful glory! Hark! Know the names Poseidon, Triton, Amphitrite, Aphrodite! SING TO THE OCEANS YOU!
