I’ve only been unhappy to see that skyline once. I don’t think it could ever happen again.

THE WITCH OF THE FOREST: 4. enchantment
Tumblr media
for zelink week 2024 @zelinkcommunity
Together, they learn how to protect the forest.
>> READ ON AO3 or see below for a preview
A night passed at the cottage, which Link spent helping Navi and Zelda cook supper. They ate a stew, a salad with vegetables from the garden, and some meat. He’d never eaten anything like it before; the soup he ate was usually grey sludge and, if he was lucky, it was served with some stale bread. That same night, he slept on a bed much comfier than the cots back at the barracks. Zelda had gathered some straw and set it up along one of the walls, covering it with a thick blanket.
The next morning, he woke up to a warm cup of tea and a plate of eggs.
“You don’t have to do this for me,” he told Zelda through a mouthful of food, sitting propped up against the wall. “You have no reason to…”
“Do I need a reason?” she retorted. “If I see someone in need, I help them. It’s quite simple.”
Link only nodded and continued to eat. He never really thought about that before. In the Lorulean army, it was every man and monster for himself, and if someone was holding you back, you killed them. He remembered the way the moblin chased after him, bloodthirsty, though their enemies were right in front of them. Link knew he deserved it, but he didn’t want to die. Did anybody, really? Maybe the bokoblins and the stal soldiers, who threw themselves into battle without a second thought, but all the Hylians in the army shared many conversations about their hopes for the future.
Not that they let their monster comrades know that, anyway.

Right in Front of You
written for comfy-vember day 19 prompt: putting on ointment
This scene comes from a Legend of Zelda au idea where Links from different games have to travel to different worlds in order to find their own. Guide to names: Ainsley = Ocarina of Time; Mungo = Minish Cap
“Ouch!”
“You’re only going to make it hurt worse if you keep squirming,” Ainsley said.
Mungo grumbled, but tried to relax as Ainsley continued putting ointment on the burn. He’d had worse wounds before, but this burn spread from his knee to his ankle, and every move was like a dozen tiny daggers stabbing his leg.
“Say, Ainsley, where’d you learn to put on ointment like that? You do it a lot more gently than the others do,” he commented.
Ainsley hesitated, his brows creasing slightly. He replied calmly, however, “Navi taught me. Despite her small size, she was quite talented at applying ointment and other medicine. She would often scold me for being too reckless, though. I remember the first time we went to the Dodongo Cave, and she yelled at me for getting too close to one of them because I thought I might be able to ride it…..”
Mungo grinned. “Oh ho, so there was a time when you acted more like an actual 10-year-old!”
Ainsley just smiled. He was well aware that he acted several years older than his age, thanks to having traveled back and forth in time between adult and childhood. It was hard to remember what the world had looked like before he became an adult—even though he was only 12 years old at present. Even to him it was confusing to think about….
He glanced up, noticing that Mungo had gone strangely quiet. Fixing Ainsley with an earnest gaze, he suddenly said, “Don’t you think she might be out there? In one of these worlds, I mean.”
Ainsley froze.
“I know you said you’d stopped searching for Navi, since you looked everywhere you possibly could and found no trace of her. But that was only in your world, right? Now we know there are all kinds of other worlds out there, and that there are certain ways to travel between them. What if she somehow got transported to a different world, and that’s why you could never find her?”
Ainsley dropped his gaze to the floor and clenched his hands. “But she disappeared long before the Mastermind started messing with the worlds."
Mungo frowned and scratched his head. “Maybe, but we don’t know for sure when the Mastermind started his meddling. He could have done something even back then. All I’m saying is, maybe you don’t have to give up on seeing her again.”
“But I have given up, Mungo. I gave up a while ago,” Ainsley said quietly.
“Have you, though? To me, it seems like you still want to find her.”
Ainsley swallowed hard. He did want to see her. She had been his closest friend, the one who had always been at his side, the one who understood him best, the one who had been the closest thing to family he’d ever had.
Yet she had left. And the more he chased her and longed for her, the more lonely he became until it was unbearable. He couldn’t let himself believe she was out there, because if she wasn’t…he would be crushed.
“I can’t, Mungo. I can’t...,” Ainsley murmured.
“Can’t what? Can’t hope? Well, if you can’t, will you at least let me and the others hope for you?”
Ainsley looked up in surprise. “Don’t forget, all of us have the triforce of courage, and part of being courageous is having hope. So if you’re falling into despair, that’s when you’ve got to rely on us. You’re not alone this time,” Mungo said with a grin.
Ainsley stared for a long moment, then a smile slowly spread across his face, and he began to chuckle. If Navi were here, she would have scolded him soundly. Of course Mungo was right. He wasn’t alone. He’d just been too absorbed in himself to realize that even if it wasn’t Navi, there were people who could feel like family, friends that could understand and accept him. Friends who were right in front of him. For the first time since Navi had left, Ainsley felt peace.
