Exploring the Art of Architectural Interior Model Making: A Comprehensive Guide
Architectural interior model making is a fascinating blend of artistry, craftsmanship, and technical precision. It allows architects and designers to visualize their concepts in three dimensions, aiding in the communication of ideas to clients, stakeholders, and even for personal design exploration. In this blog, we'll delve into the full process of creating architectural interior models, from concept to completion.
Tumblr media
**1. Conceptualization and Design
Every successful architectural interior model starts with a well-defined concept and design. This phase involves sketching, brainstorming, and creating preliminary drawings or 3D digital models. The goal is to capture the essence of the interior space, considering aspects like layout, materials, lighting, and overall ambiance. Once the concept is established, it’s time to move to the next step.
2. Material Selection
Tumblr media
3. Scale and Measurements
Decide on the scale of your model — common scales are 1:50, 1:100, or 1:200, depending on the size of the project. Accurate measurements are essential, as they ensure the model accurately represents the real-world dimensions of the interior space.
4. Model Construction
a. Base Creation: Start by creating the base of the model. This is typically a solid piece of material that provides stability to the model and represents the floor.
b. Walls and Structural Elements: Cut, shape, and assemble the walls, columns, and other structural elements according to your design. Precision is key here to ensure that everything fits together seamlessly.
c. Furniture and Fixtures: Craft furniture pieces and fixtures to scale. This might involve using small pieces of wood, foam, or even repurposing miniature items.
d. Flooring and Finishes: Apply appropriate finishes to walls and floors. You can use printed textures, paint, or even real materials like fabric or wood veneer.
e. Lighting: For added realism, incorporate miniature LED lights to mimic the lighting scheme of the interior. This step requires careful planning to hide wiring and achieve a natural lighting effect.
5. Detailing and Realism
Tumblr media
6. Painting and Texturing
Use paints and textures to add depth and realism to your model. Weathering effects, shading, and color gradients can be applied to mimic the actual materials present in the interior space.
7. Presentation and Communication
The purpose of an architectural interior model is to convey your design vision effectively. Place your model in a context that showcases its features and perspective. Clear acrylic display cases or carefully staged photography can enhance the presentation.
8. Iteration and Feedback
Tumblr media
Conclusion
Architectural interior model making is a captivating journey that requires a combination of artistic flair, technical skill, and meticulous attention to detail. From initial sketches to the final presentation, each step in the process contributes to the creation of a tangible representation of a designer’s vision. This time-honored practice continues to play a pivotal role in the world of architecture and design, bridging the gap between ideas and reality. Whether for professional purposes or personal exploration, the art of architectural interior model making is a testament to the power of hands-on creativity in the digital age.
At Maadhu Creatives, we believe in the power of presentation. Our models are elegantly showcased, allowing clients and stakeholders to witness the design’s potential. Through iteration and feedback, we fine-tune every aspect, ensuring that the model serves as a bridge between imagination and reality.

It's been a couple years since I completed a custom on the Hartland Lady Jade mold--in fact, the last one was my first completed custom of 2022, and this is my first completed custom of 2024! I've made her over into this gorgeous dapple bay with golden undertones, and the pictures don't do justice to how rich her coloration came out!
She's available at https://www.etsy.com/listing/1840698528/andromeda-hartland-custom-dapple-bay

As Magical Warfare became mechanised, and Mages Towers’ fell far behind established lines and combat zones, those powerful Wizards needed to be moved up into the fight with something that’ll house their great magicks and be just as defensible.
I’ve finally made a Tonk! I had told Apocrypha Now in the past I’d do one but I never got around to it, and it’s been a a while now but I’ve been constantly thinking about Narcoleptic Wizard‘s Aethertonk challenge. Welp, finally decided todo it and I’m super happy with the results, it’s not as silly as most tonks are which is a bit of a shame but I definitely think it’s badass atleast—and I’m very happy that the turret AND wheels fully function, no need to pretend it moves across the board I can just push it and it goes.

Started working on an Isha model this week. And I’m pretty happy with how it’s going.
Started off with working on the skin tones using oils after priming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then moved on to start the clothes. I really loved how the torso tuned out. With it being the first time I focused on painting shadows and highlights on the folds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy to look at the progress and see where I have progressed from when I first did Jinx last year. The skin tones might be a bit light for Isha, but probably perfect for Jinx. Hard to tell while the oil is still wet and the eyes and hair aren’t painted.
I will be posting updates underneath this post, then make a new post once of the final pictures once it is complete.

I hit a big milestone this week.
For the first time in almost ten months, I picked up a paintbrush and painted some miniatures.
I’ve had no time or motivation to do any Hobbying for most of this year for a number of reasons but I’m now at a point where I can carve out a few minutes here and there to get painting.
A big part of this was clearing out the hobby room which had been used as a storage room and was piled high with boxes and other stuff, so it was not the kind of place I wanted to be in.
I got the room cleared and reorganised my painting setup so it’s all fresh and ready to go.
I’m hoping to get more time to paint going forward, as I’ve really missed it. Building and painting scale miniatures has always been a primary source of calm for me, helping to take my mind off things and de-stress. So it’s kinda ironic that stress and all of the things that come with it, has been the reason I’ve not been able to paint, and it created a sort of spiral which I was finding it very difficult to escape from.
Hopefully 2025 will be a smoother ride.
Glad to be back and hopefully I’ll have some stuff to share soon!
Happy Hobbying
Dave

Visited the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, and they had a scale model railroad display. I honestly like seeing them to learn what I can for my own craft. This was one of them.
Lime Kiln
The Lime Kiln diorama, based on an actual set of lans in Felton, California, was built by the late Jim Vail. Look for the miniature workers in the kiln, and the detail of the limestones as they are processed. The lime from Felton was used to make cement for the growing city of San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area cities.

West Side Lumber
Located in Tuolumne, a small city in the Sierra Foothills, the West Side Lumber Company once operated an extensive logging operation served by a narrow gauge railroad. This HO scale model by Jim Vail is a foreshortened representation of the sawmill, which was modified to include a small farm scene.

New World Headquarters for the Research Commission, Formation of The Hunter’s Guild: The Settlement of Astera or The Settlement of Astera or Astera (Monster Hunter: World) made by hand primarily from paper (also floral wire, toothpicks, epoxy resin) 28” x 20” diameter

My largest miniature yet and certainly the most densely constructed. This piece took me 5 months, chipped through well over 1k blades, 4 pads of bristol paper, countless sheets of cardstock, 3 bottles of glue, 48 LEDs, and a liter of clear cast resin. For scale photo scroll all the way down!

I FINALLY made a palomino that I felt okay not adding appaloosa/pinto markings to. Lighter colors have always been a challenge for me, but this one turned out better than expected. And the San Domingo mold is such a nice one to customize, too; I really should be working with him more. Half of the ones I have stashed away in the custom fodder box are missing their left hind leg below the hock, just like this guy was before I made him a new one, so it's not uncommon for this mold to need that leg resculpted.

Been doing a bad job with updates, so here's whats going on lately.
Moms annual Christmas Village house is almost finished, just a few touch ups with paint and it'll be ready to go.
Vintage F-8 Crusader from Monogram. This one is a 1988 boxing, with aftermarket decals. The roundel over the refueling boom was always going to be the toughest decal, and it's set now. Also decided to keep the raised panel lines, and detail with a #2 pencil. Trying to get this kit finished by the end of the year.
Finally I've been working on various buildings for the mountain top town. More buildings make it less a castle, more of a village. No deadline for this, I've been working on it for 5 years, nowhere to put it when it's done either.
